Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton at awards-baity TIFF premiere: lovely or try-hard?

Here are some photos of Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne (and Eddie’s wife Hannah) at the TIFF premiere of The Danish Girl. Fashion notes: I don’t have the ID on Hannah’s minidress, but she wears British designers almost exclusively, so it’s probably a British designer, maybe even McQueen. Alicia Vikander wore Louis Vuitton, because she’s one of the faces of LV and she’s been wearing LV to every major carpet for months now. For what it’s worth, I actually think this black gown might be my favorite Louis Vuitton gown she’s worn so far. My one complaint is that I don’t think she needs all that makeup, quite honestly. She looks like a kid who got into her mom’s makeup.

The Danish Girl’s world premiere was at the Venice Film Festival more than a week ago, but TIFF (moreso than Venice) is seen as the big Oscar-launch. Like, if the film is well-received at TIFF, you can pretty much guarantee that they’ll be trying for an Oscar. Much like the Venice reviews, the TIFF reviews are pretty positive. The film’s pedigree is admired, but some critics have complained that the film just feels TOO Oscar-baity. Nearly every TIFF review that I’m seeing singles out Eddie and Alicia for their strong and awards-worthy performances though. The Hollywood Reporter wonders openly if Redmayne will win back-to-back Oscars and many believe that Vikander gives a scene-stealing, emotionally resonant performance as Lili’s wife. THR is already wondering if Vikander will go for a Supporting Actress or lead actress nomination, and they suggest that she go for supporting.

Eddie, as always, is acting like a total pro at TIFF. He’s giving quotes about how it was a privilege to play Lili, how we need to shine a light on trans issues, and how it’s not about awards. He’s humble and rather perfect, isn’t he?

PS… Michael Fassbender still hasn’t come out to support Alicia for any of her projects. While I know the Vikander-loonies insist that all is well between Fassy and Alicia, I’m definitely getting the feeling that there are problems. Also: there’s a rumor about Fassbender getting down with Jennifer Lawrence. I don’t know… I think Fassy and J-Law are just bros, don’t you?

Tiff reviews for this are even worst that Venice reactions. A lot of C grades and 2 stars

    • Mia4S says:

Eh, it sounds like at minimum she’s heading for an Oscar nomination (or at least a BAFTA and a couple of big nominations). The odd contingent who decided after five minutes that she’s smug should probably start preparing themselves for that.

    • Original T.C. says:

The reviews for the film are mild to moderate but the reviews of their performances have been great. Alicia is a pretty girl that is poorly dressed by LV yet again. Channel would be a better fit of fashion houses.

  2. Catelina says:

Other than the eye makeup, which is scary af, she looks nice
    Eddie’s wife looks cute too

  3. Alessio says:

I feel like this year there are so many actresses that could potentially be up for the oscar and other awards that it would be smart for them to push alicia for supporting and not lead, imo

  4. Balm says:

Alicia chooses geometric stuff, doesn’t she? She looks good here though, but a bit of colour would be nice. I love the dress Eddie’s wife is wearing. Great colour and cut and her hair’s lovely with it.

  5. Stacey says:

The puckering along that bottom-most seam on that black dress is awful.

  6. Nina says:

    That dress is HIDEOUS.

  7. LAK says:

I love the RC showing although ER’s wife’s dress would have been better longer, knee length perhaps.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

His wife seems over it in general, in every picture her facial expression says “Ugh not another year!”.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Hannah wears the facial expressions of every spouse dragged to a husband/wife’s work event.

      • Liv says:

That’s not true, there are many women or men who are smiling like crazy and are happy to be part of the circus. Speaks in her favour if she doesn’t in my opinion! 😉

      • Bridget says:

It’s probably hard to go straight from one awards campaign season directly into another, especially as a spouse.

      • Izzy says:

I always read it as her trying to let her husband shine as it’s his moment. She seems very sweet and gracious, they look adorable together.

    • Betti says:

I agree it would have been better longer and with her hair up. Still a nice dress thou. Also, Hannah needs to do something about her makeup, she pretty but the natural look she favors washes her out a bit.

  8. TheOtherMaria says:

The skirt of that dress ruins its potential, also, her makeup artist failed on the foundation match.

  9. StormsMama says:

I really like the black dress. What’s funny is that it read FANCY on her
But it would be very middle of the road regular for Angie Jolie and it’s giving me that vibe
I’ve never seen this actress Alicia V in anything so all I know her from is this site and Lainey. Can’t say she has that star pow!power but perhaps with a performance I’ll see it…she’s more “cute” than anything else to me. Like a Natalie Portman type.

  10. Margareth says:

Fashion wise, she always looks to me like a little girl who randomly takes clothes from her mother’s wardrobe.

  11. Talie says:

She seems hellbent on getting an Oscar nom, but if she wants a win — supporting is the best spot for her. They always go for the new girls.

    • Nic919 says:

I was at the premiere and Alicia has as much screen time as Eddie on this one. I don’t think the movie is perfect, but she and Eddie give strong performances. I agree she can come off as smug, but while I wasn’t impressed with her in other roles to date, she was pretty good here.
She has a lead role in this film and with the right marketing could get a nomination.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

I think her personality just doesn’t translate well to print. I’ve watched some interviews of her on youtube and she seemed really gracious.

      • Betti says:

Re: Alicia – the smug is strong with this one. I’ve seen some YT videos of her promoting Ex-machina and she came across OK. She’s confident which is a good thing but she just to reign it in a bit – otherwise it can come across as arrogance.

  12. Renee says:

That looks like a dress I wore to my HS homecoming.

  13. Nori says:

Hannah’s dress looks like a Valentino, no?

    • Em' says:

I think so too. The flowers, the high collar. It reminds me of the Valentino dress she wore at the BAFTAs

  14. Bridget says:

Fassbender hasn’t even come out to support his own stuff, let alone his girlfriend’s. Hasn’t be been stuck filming Assassin’s Creed?

    *Note: I can’t believe I know this.

    • Mia4S says:

Yep, quick google search shows he’s in Malta filming.

Sure no one knows what’s up there but I will say it’s nice to see her get press on her own for her performance and not for her arm candy (*cough* Amber Heard *cough*).

  15. belle de jour says:

I would love that black dress – the matte vs. shiny texture, the bias, the modern angles of the lines, arm and neck area, the variation in skirt volume – had it been better constructed; satin and charmeuse jump right into cheap if you can’t get the stitching and gathers to sit well.

  16. Angie says:

Hannah’s dress is definetly Valentino; I saw it featured on some blog at the Valentino spring show. It’s lovely!

In terms of an Oscar nod, I doubt it because so many heavy hitters like Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Lilly Tomlin, etc have films coming out this year or have already at Sundace. Let’s be real, she won’t get a nomination over a seasoned actor with several nominations or a win(s) already. Also, Saoirse Ronan is supposed to be wonderful in Brooklyn; if any young actor should be recognized, it’s her! She’s so young with some great films under her belt and an Oscar nod at 13.

  17. Tiny Martian says:

I really like the dress. That bodice really suits her, and I’m willing to bet that the skirt looks much better in person. All that silk needs to be in motion!

As for Alicia, I think she’s a terrific actress. And I can’t put a talented and intelligent woman down for her confidence. Not to mention that people seem to forget that all of the interviews she conducts in English are not in her first language, so there’s that.

    • Naddie says:

Yeah, I’m still trying to get this arrogance people talk about. The most I can point is a somewhat smug facial expression, and that’s it.

  18. Andrea says:

I’m going to a TIFF premiere tonight!

On a side note, I think fassbender and Vikander will be done before awards season. I just don’t think he is that into anyone that much for that long.

  19. brownies says:

This chick doesn’t deserve a Oscar nom for a so-so performance. Harvey Weinstein keeps getting away with this crap every year.

  20. j.eyre says:

Eddie looks incredible in that suit. Every time I want to give up on him, I am reminded how well he can dress and I do love a man that can dress (for which, I believe, he credits his wife, yes?)

  21. Patty says:

Love the dress, hate the make-up.

  22. moon says:

Good god what was LV thinking? That dress is hideous! It looks like some cheap dominatrix top attached to a cheap prom dress bottom, put together by some wannabe fashion designer who raided a thrift store and tried to be edgy. Alicia is a beautiful girl but the LV styling has been horrendous.

  23. KIEL says:

Hannah looks really beautiful. The green of the dress makes her skin glow I think.
