Robert Pattinson on internet hate: ‘Most normal people are not commenters’

wenn22450076

There were some tabloids stories circulating over the past few weeks about FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson and how Rob had basically called off their engagement. The stories involved details about how Rob’s family was pleased that Rob and Twigs were done because they didn’t care for Twigs at all. I thought of those stories when I read this latest excerpt from Rob’s NME Magazine interview. For what it’s worth, Twigs and Rob were recently spotted together and while I believe their wedding plans may be paused, I kind of think they are still together. And my guess is that Rob’s family is fine with it. NME asked Rob about the negative crap his fiancée has gotten because of their relationship, specifically the racist crap. This is what he said:

“I was talking to my dad about this and I bet him that if he looked up Nelson Mandela’s funeral on YouTube, the first comment would be a racist one. And it was, with like a million upvotes. What I don’t get is why. I think it’s because most normal people are not commenters – I’ve never met anyone who’s left a comment on anything. It’s just demons who live in basements. You have this weird thing where you end up trying to fight against this faceless blob, where the more you hate it, the bigger it gets, because it’s all in your head.”

[From NME]

I actually think that’s probably the best perspective to have when you’re a celebrity. Even celebrities who engage with their fans on social media have to learn that sometimes, some people are just going to be nasty just for the hell of it, because they can, because anonymity breeds contempt in some/many cases.

Meanwhile, Rob also said some words about how difficult it is for him to stay in shape these days, and how he’s terrified that someone will get a photo of his gut:

“I’m so glad about the vanity required in this job because if I didn’t have to stay in shape, I’d be such a fat arse. But it used to be that I could start working out four weeks before a job and it would be totally fine. Now? Nothing happens. You just beat your body into submission. What the f–k is going on? I had to go on holiday to an extravagant secret location this year because I was afraid of someone photographing my gut.”

[From E! News]

For some reason, this made me think of Channing Tatum. Channing is always saying that if he didn’t have to be in shape for his career, he would basically be mainlining birthday cake, ice cream and pizza. For Rob, I think he likes his beer and his munchies, and yes, as you get older, the empty calories in alcohol will catch up to you! Rob’s lucky because he’s so tall, some of us… not so much.

    I really enjoy this dude.

And FTR, I’ve never seen the Twilight stuff and the only movie I’ve ever seen with him was that Cronenberg flick.

    • bettyrose says:

Gulp, you haven’t seen Goblet of Fire?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He’ll always be Cedric Diggory to me.

      And Cedric was so good

      • Shambles says:

        Oh, ‘Ced. *sniffles*

All he wanted to do was play professional Quidditch and make wizard babies with Cho Chang. Tragic

      • Bridget says:

That was the point where the books really grew up. And anyone that hasn’t read the books (or even seen the movies, to a lesser extent) is seriously missing out!

      • Shambles says:

ITA, Bridget, you have to read the books. The movies are fantastic, but there’s so much detail on the inner workings of the wizarding universe that you’re missing if you don’t read the books. If nothing else, they help you to appreciate the sheer brilliance of JK Rowling and the world she created.

      • bettyrose says:

Bridget, ITA. Other than the first movie, I never thought they captured the books all that well. Especially with GoF, which is very adult in its themes, prose, and length, the movie would’ve had to be ten hours long to do the book justice. Still, the film is pretty dark.

    • mia girl says:

Yeah, me too. Skip the Twilight stuff and check out The Rover (with Guy Pearce). He was really good.

But frankly, I’d prefer a movie of just his interviews. The guy is entertaining.

    • ninal says:

The first twilight is so worth watching, him and kristen thought they were reinventing the wheel and are very overwrought in every scene. I remember reading before it came out how they were both really serious about the whole thing and and fought with directors and producers about their “motivation” and then he watched the final product and had to leave halfway through cause he couldn’t handle seeing anymore.. hahah It’s very earnest to the point of kitsch, which is right up my alley.

      • Annie says:

Catherine was such a terrible director. When you have young actors this motivated and excited, you can do great things with it. She was legit winging it the entire time. I remember a behind the scenes video where she was holding a camera and running backwards with it, and I was like, what are you doing?? You can make a cheesy but good film. Look all 80’s teen movies. You don’t need a genius script to at least make an enjoyable movie. But this was just…. Terrible. They wasted the opportunitiy, but they knew they were making a ton of money so who cares? Death of filmmaking in every sense.

      • ninal says:

The direction is so bad, and the editing. I mean, the concept of them sorta jumping on trees together hidden dragon, crouching style in that gorgeous Pacific northwest landscape is an awesome concept. But the execution? omg, it’s like I hear benny hill music in the background during that scene! I watched it with my two young boys at the time, and we all cracked up during that sequence – even the 8 year old! There was potential there to make something visually beautiful and even darkly comedic, but it was turned into a awkward kitsch-fest in the end.

      • Chris R says:

Oh lord, that was one of the most awkward things I’ve ever seen. I can’t watch stuff like that; I get so embarrassed and cringe for the performers. Couldn’t even make it to the end. Love this guy though; he seems like a genuine person.

      • Katie says:

The timing is horrible. The dialogue is unbelievingly cringe worthy and the overall effect of the movie is high school drama class meets intro to film class at the continuing education center. I could have been awesomely bad but it’s just bad.

  2. Shambles says:

We r all demonz who live in basementz, u guyz

    • bettyrose says:

LOL, I just assumed we’re exempt from his comments. But I cringe so hard at all the anger and stupidity out there.
Just click any news story about birth control to be reminded by the comments of what wanton man-hating harlots we all are (yep, we’re uber sluts while hating men. Thanks internet).

      • Shambles says:

Betty, it’s awful! I once fell down the rabbit hole of reading through comments on an MRAish website… It’s enough to send a lady spiraling into depression. Thank God for yoga.

      • Abbott says:

The folks over at HKN also don’t think his comments apply to them. I’m proudly waving my basement demon flag!

      • mia girl says:

Maybe when he made the comment he had this in mind…

        http://jezebel.com/5556652/a-glimpse-inside-the-rooms-of-twilight-super-fans

      • Shambles says:

Abbott, I have my basement demon flag duct-taped to the bed of my pickemup truck.

Mia, I’m gasping for air 😂 That’s a TwiHardOn if I ever saw one.

      • mia girl says:

Shambles – Crazy right??! All this talk of basements + Sparkles made me recall seeing something years ago about about Twihard rooms.

PS the woman pictured was 56 years old at the time. WTF?!

      • bettyrose says:

        Mia Girl,
Gah, that just makes me sad. I had a couple of pop culture obsessions like that in my pre-teens, a time when the fantasy world felt emotionally safe. It breaks my heart to see someone still coping that way in adulthood.

      • Abbott says:

@mia girl my internal switchboard keeps short circuiting every time I open that link.

      • Katija says:

Um, insane celebrity obsessions are MY obsession. Like if I’m having a “lazy internet day” (AKA today because I always get to leave hella early on Friday, LOL), one of my favorite things to do is scour YouTube for people who are OBSESSED with like, Twilight or Taylor Swift or One Direction or what-the-hell-ever. The nutcase bedrooms, HKN (SUP!), the crazy-ass vlogging rants… I used to always stop what I was doing and focus on the screen when E! would run a “Dangerous Obsessions” type special on people who were insanely obsessed with celebs.

Now you can just find their YouTube channel or blog and go straight to the source, haha. I don’t know WHY I find it so fascinating, but I do. Watching people who LIVE for a famous person… something about it can just keep me clicking and reading for hours. I am actually part of a team that is trying to pitch a pilot for like, “Intervention” but for celebrity/media obsessions. My friend is in documentaries and I gave him the idea, we’ll see what happens. Finding subjects has been surprisingly difficult considering that they seem to be EVERYWHERE online, haha. We actually APPROACHED a few noted “obsessed with Twilight” people and were told in no uncertain terms to “f*** off” by all of them. The Twilight people seem more bitter than the rest – maybe because their thing is kinda “done” and they’re in withdrawal so to speak.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Katija,
I would so watch that documentary! Like you, I am fascinated by aberrant behavior. Nothing more interesting to me then what makes people, even ordinary ones, tick but the strange ones? Yeah, i would watch it so hard. Good luck with the idea!

    • kri says:

I sleep next to Arianna Grande Deamon Baby on a shelf in Mariah Carey’s basement…..ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I wouldn’t be down here with y’all if it weren’t for the chains. Today’s forecast is 70 degrees and partly cloudy. Today’s forecast is 70 degrees and partly cloudy. Today’s forecast is 70 degrees and partly cloudy.

      • Shambles says:

Well that’s depressing, if we unchained you from the radiator you would just up and LEAVE?? Whatever happened to loyalty?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ohhhh, um, nooooooooo, Schamblees, her would not leave if her was unchained. Her looves basementses. Unchained her and sees!

      • Shambles says:

Her is a tricky little demon of the basementses. Schamblees sees what her is doing. Schamblees no unchain! Never escapeses! Never!

      • Lilacflowers says:

        But there is wine outside

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

        No mimosas today?

      • Shambles says:

We make moonshine in the basement, ladies. Is much more better

      • byland says:

I vote in six months we move the basement party to the attic at my bar. It’s Texas, so basements are rare, but attics! We’ve got those.

(And, okay, “technically” it’s not “my” bar. It’s my brother’s bar. But my husband and I own a third of it, so we still get free drinks.)

Escape totally won’t be on the menu, nuh uh, no ma’am.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Someone please hand me the moonshine jug. Give me that demon water.

      • frisbee says:

I’m voting for an international chapter in Europe starting in the UK in my greenhouse with members chained to the staging (they can water the plants at the same time) We can have t-shirts and a motorbike gang and everybody can meet up once a year at the Isle of Man TT races.
I’ll bet this lot are a bunch of demon basement dwellers – with bikes!

        I

    • BNA FN says:

He has a point. There are a lots of crazy people out there leaving comments on the Internet. Some stars are stalked by crazy trolls. I have read comments especially against Angelina and Brad wishing death to the family.

One of the reasons I come to cb is because they have more decent people here leaving comments. There are times I reads. Comments on some Other popular sites, eg JJ or People Magazine some of those. Commanders should be in jail if they could not hide behind their computers

      comments section.

This. Is the only site I will leave a comment on because most of the regulars are decent people by reading their comments. There are times when people come
over from FF just to be obnoxious and disrespectful especially to Angelina Jolie Pitt.

    • mia girl says:

      demonz forever!

    • Bridget says:

I read his comment and thought “well he’s clearly never held an office job”.

There are some sites like YouTube that draw crazies out of the woodwork and into their comments sections. But there are also a ton of other sites that have little communities in their Comments and somehow manage to have polite, interested discourse. But then again, maybe he doesn’t know because he spends all his time in bookstores.

Side note: is it somehow physically impossible for this guy not to make a rude and dismissive comment?

      • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

@Lol… He’s never given a class to a group of 30 wild 13 year-old kids, who are being influenced by their hormones and want to appear grown-ups and are still so childish…

    • senna says:

I think we’re kind of meta: we’re (usually) not talking about the virtue or real life of the celebrity themselves, but commenting on how they play the PR game in light of what’s known and speculated about them. I prefer to think he’s talking about the racist assholes going nuts about Twigs he mentioned and the fandom that holds a torch for his supposed secret life with Kristen.

    • Pandy says:

Yes, demonz, totally not normal! Cause, you know, we don’t think and form opinions and want to share them …

Although I do think he’s talking racist trolls. But you know, a basement demon has to comment!

    • steph says:

they didnt know the books were a phenomenon until they realesed the movies. they were actually doing an indie film.

    • bluhare says:

Pah. I comment from my closet.

    • Miss M says:

I like him, but he is not that great in print. He sounds either a neurotic mess or a try-hard hipster to me. What do this demon in a basement know?! Lol

    • FLORC says:

Close the Bulkhead! The Light! It Burns!! *Hiissssss*

      • I Choose Me says:

I would totally live in a basement as long as it was cool down there. Ugh. It’s so hot right now and too frigging bright.

      • FLORC says:

I love i have a partially finished basement. It is Consistently 10 degrees cooler. Everyone should have it.

  3. kay says:

How much worse would he have it if he were an actress who is 30 and expected to show her body either nude or in bikinis in pretty much every role?

  4. Kdlaf says:

It seems like all he talks about (or maybe gets asked about) is internet commenters – what about his work, his movies, his projects?!! He seems like a nice guy and all but has he been in anything that has blown people away? Even though KStew is somewhat overrated and seems to play the same characters – her projects always seem interesting. For once it seems like a guy is getting more personal life questions than the girl (from the same franchise)

    • Tiny Martian says:

Well, he does talk about his work as well, but those comments just don’t usually make the headlines on gossip boards, unfortunately!

As for his movies, he actually blew me away in The Rover. I was never a Twilight fan, only saw the first movie and thought it was silly (no offense to any Twi fans!). But I wouldn’t have recognized him in The Rover, and he really held his own with Guy Pearce, who is one of my favorite actors. I like the fact that most of the roles he takes on seem to be very transformational, he’s a versatile actor. I think he’s got real potential.

    • mia girl says:

In this interview there is quite a bit about the latest move he’s in that is opening in the UK this week. It’s called LIFE and apparently the film, he and Dean DeHane are generally getting good reviews. I don’t think it releases here in the states for a while.

      • Louise says:

I just read an interview where they said it was a dull movie and he gives a dull performance – think it was the Guardian!

      • Julie says:

Umm, the movie is cool, Guy Lodge from Variety loved it, it’s fresh on tomatoes. Don’t bring your agenda here.

      • mia girl says:

Yeah, I’m sure there are some bad ones, and not surprised from the Guardian (those critics always seem so hard to please).
The reviews I read were in Variety and some other indie film-type sites.

      • kai says:

It’s Dane DeHaan. (But I don’t blame you for getting that wrong) I loved him in ‘Kill your darlings’ and the interviews with him and D.Radcliffe were the best thing ever. I don’t really care for Pattinson, but I’ll see this film for DeHaan.

    • Louise says:

That’s because the press know that Kristen won’t go there. The tabloids will twist her words and the gossip columns will read into everything she says but she herself doesn’t talk about her private life.

  5. meme says:

Talk about broad sweeping generalizations. Arrogant twit.

  6. Abbott says:

Basement demon? I can demon on all kinds of square footage, not just subterranean thankyouverymuchshovelface.

  7. tx_ava says:

oh no I’m a demon my family will be so disappointed

  8. Ronda says:

Robert, we all know you are reading this so let me tell you: F*ck off.

  9. Cinderella says:

Why is it always basements?? Some basements are really cool, actually.

  10. WR says:

Comment sections vary a lot by site. Some attract mostly trolls and others attract mostly intelligent comments. There are some sites that I never scroll down to the comment section because they’re usually filled with stupidity. I was surprised though the other day when AV Club covered the story about Kesha no longer being able to release music because she accused the head of her label of rape. I tentatively checked the comments thinking people would be making fun of her. But it turned out a lot of people were sympathetic toward her.

    • Ruth Dunbar says:

I’ve found the AV Club commenters to be a mostly fun and decent lot.

      • Tiffany says:

Me too. I like the AV commenters. They will be the first to joke about themselves.

      • Ella says:

AV Club varies a lot. They’re respectful to some celebrities and downright mean to others. Kesha typically gets lots of mean so it was nice to see people discussing rape culture and the abuses of recording contracts rather than kicking her while she’s down.

      • WR says:

Yes AV Club is fun to an annoying level. It’s like dumb joke after dumb joke that goes way off topic. That’s what I expected on the Kesha story and while some commenters did make jokes I was surprised that most commenters realized that a woman being punished for accusing a powerful man of rape wasn’t funny.

      • mia girl says:

I like the AV Club comments but agree they can go way off the topic (but usually in a fun way). Pajiba has a similar vibe but are better about staying on topic. Lot’s of funny and smart comments there.

But for me, no place beats Celebitchy

      • byland says:

I used to comment at another (celebrity news/gossip) site, but somewhere along the way I looked up and realized I didn’t recognize the place anymore. So I stopped. I looked around for a while, found nothing, shrugged my shoulders, and moved on.

Fast-forward to sitting on my ass a lot pregnant with twins and I start looking for a fun-like place to get active-ish again. Something not to do with kids/pregnancy, not to do with work, and nothing is really looking appealing. Then I remember here. I used to read the articles here, but when I stopped commenting on my old site, I stopped with the celeb stuff in general. And glory be! Just what I was waiting for. I’m still sleeping a lot when I have the time, so I’m not commenting a lot, but so far I really love it here.

Celebitchy is really where it’s at.

  11. NUTBALLS says:

“But it used to be that I could start working out four weeks before a job and it would be totally fine. Now? Nothing happens. You just beat your body into submission.”

It’s called getting old, Rob. Join the club.

  12. Mrs. Darcy says:

It’s not difficult to seek out the lowest common denominator of humanity, it’s also just as easy to find awesomeness and inspiration on the internet if you look in the right places. Upworthy, Change.Org, Humans of N.Y., etc. Trawling Youtube comments is never a fun idea, I get he had to deal with racist b.s. because of his g.f. and that sucks big time, but he comes across as kind of a Moaning Myrtle. Instead of whining about internet trolls he could be using his voice and influence to promote the things he cares about like racism and whatever else. Oh but let’s ponder more on how he had to find a secret island to hide his man gut, cry me a river Sparkles! (sorry I went into basement demon mode! ;-0)

  13. Toot says:

I liked how in the same article it was revealed that Florence from Florence and the Machine introduced Robert to Twigs. She’s their mutual friend. They must all have music in common.

I wish he would sing again. I like his voice.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AAKCZiIoB4

  14. CloverDilly says:

I don’t think he’s talking about people who comment here. My guess is he’s referring to basement dwelling trolls who have made nasty, racial comments about Twigs as well as those who defend his secret marriage Kristen and the secret children they have. Those people are down right scary.

    • Luca76 says:

Exactly this. He’s got some of the craziest crazy people on the worldwide web fixated with him and living in an imaginary world where he and his ex are married with babies, in addition to a bunch of racists a-holes that call themselves fans but bully his current gf (I’m sure there is plenty of overlap between the two factions).

    • Solanacaea (Nighty) says:

I agree… He’s not talking about us, he’s talking about the really crazy ones…

    • mom2two says:

I think those are the ones he is talking about too. Some of them were and continue to be downright racist and nasty to FKA Twigs. And the ones who believe he and Kristen are married with a secret child…that is downright terrifying that they believe that when there is no evidence at all.

  15. DarkSparkle says:

Considering what this guy had to go through with all the Robsten stalkers and fansites, I don’t blame him for his hate.

I’m not saying “Poor Edward” either, because that phase is done, he made enough money to maintain a comfortable life, and he’s not even 30. The sky is the limit dude, go live your truth. Go buy a small island in the Bahamas and move your family there, spend your days beachcombing with the Twiglets and learning to surf or something. Never see a pap again.

    • D. says:

As you mentioned he’s not even 30, why would he want to live a post-retirement life? He has a family and a career, his girlfriend is a successful artist, why would they go to the Bahamas to basically do nothing?

      • DarkSparkle says:

I didn’t think of it as post retirement life, I thought of it as just living without worry or care.

I guess that speaks more to what I would do in that situation, now that I think about it. I realize that’s not everyone’s bag.

  16. Frosty says:

I was wondering why my basement reeks of sulphur…

  17. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

    Define normal.

  18. Josefa says:

I’ve seen people have paragraph long discussions with very strong and nasty slurs, over cats vs dogs.

Yeah yeah they are rich and whatever but the hate people can get on social media for absolutely no reason is crazy. This site can get pretty nasty, and it’s far more civilized than, say, twitter.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

The beauty of social media is that it’s a safe place to get some feedback on some of my more questionable thoughts and ideas without the risks attached to expressing them in the real world. I find it tremendously helpful that way.

      • Josefa says:

Eh. I hate that social media gives people the idea they have a right to an opinion about everything. You’re entitled to an opinion – if you know what you’re talking about. If you don’t, sorry, but your opinion is wrong and invalid.

I can feel for celebs in that way, having any quote you say taken out of context and over-analyzed, to later have people call you racist, sexist etc. must get extremely exhausting. Because the internet is always right, and they demand apologies, not rational explanations.

      • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Who said anything about having an opinion on everything? I was talking about getting feedback on things I wouldn’t feel comfortable with expressing in the real world particularly the workplace. it’s good to have a safe space where I can thrash out thoughts and ideas without having to worry about being judged by people who matter.

    • Lady D says:

Radar online has changed their comment section, I noticed today. You now have to leave your full name when commenting. Bet that cuts down on the amount of comments listed. I wish TMZ would do the same. They have some horrific racists posting on that site.

      • Emily C. says:

I see that theory a lot, but I don’t believe it. I see people say racist/misogynistic/vile things under their full names constantly on the internet. It’s people who speak out against those people who are generally silenced by policies that make you give your full name. Because if you give your full name, you are much more likely to be stalked.

  19. Anotherjen says:

Aren’t his 15 mins up yet?

  20. liahfhak says:

He’s not a very good googler then, because just as much evil troll comments there is out there on the internet, just as much love is spread through the comments sections. And he would never be as famous as he is, if it werent because of people who wrote about him and commented on articles about him.

And then again – there is a line between “evil trolls” and just people not liking your work. Some people just takes things horribly personally, insted of thinking that people just don’t like your art. And that’s fine.

But then again, of course it’s not right to spread hate and evil racist comments. BUT – If someone is writing a comment about something about him as an artist that they don’t like, that is NOT hate and I do think most celebs are taking those comments as “hate” instead of thinking that their art is just not for them, you know what I mean?

    • Josefa says:

I’m not sure if having Twihards worshipping you on the interwebz is better than having trolls hating on you.

      • liahfhak says:

I’ve never mentioned twihards. There are plenty of people loving Robert as an artist, and that doesnt necessary got anything to do with the fact he played Edward Cullen.

And any kind of love spread is better than hate. And I’m sure twihards are spreading love to Robert, not hate.

The more you touch poop, the more it smells. It is the exact same thing with hate. The more hate you read, the more you overshadow the love that people are actually writing.

    • Anne says:

      @liahfhak
Yes. His comment did over-generalize in his characterization of commentary. People have different levels of sensitivity to criticism, and I can understand that it might be difficult for some well-known people to hear anonymously voiced opinions about all aspects of their lives, looks and careers. I think, sometimes, they may try to distance themselves from commentary – even from the genuinely supportive interest & the well reasoned criticism – because the barrage is just so personal and, often, mean-spirited or lacking tact. I see it as a self-protective thing and, as an admittedly “overly sensitive” person myself, I relate to it.

I once heard someone say “beneath every criticism is a request. Listen for the request.” I infer from his comments that he has found some commentary hurtful and unfair and he’s reacting against it.

  21. liahfhak says:

And btw…. He’s talking about “trolls on the internet” with no power at all, yet not talking about the racism, women hating, abusers, rapists and pedophiles in Hollywood with power. FML.

    • Deidra says:

He was asked about the racist attacks his girlfriend is receiving online, why would he bring up rapists and pedophiles? Makes no sense.

      • liahfhak says:

Because this is not the first time he is talking about evil comments on the internet and he is using his so called “voice” to talk about this, yet leaves out 10000 more important things.

    • Josefa says:

He could be talking about the refugee crisis in Europe or the chinese stock market crash as well. Why should he talk about subjects he wasn’t asked about?

  22. Unmade_bed says:

I have to agree. I only comment when I’m sick (today) or depressed.

  23. Corrie says:

Well he’s got all the internet basement dwellers pegged well. All you need to do is go over to GossipCop and find them. Or twigs IG page. Its horrendous. Or her friends accounts. They accost any and everything twigs is related to… or Kristen. They are truly awful people the Twilight fans.

As for the engagement… I don’t believe People/DM/Enews got that story right. People immediately put out they were getting married in Aug as soon as the engagement news was leaked by a casual friend. People don’t no sources its clear with Rob or Twigs based on how they pushed Andrew and Emma break up during his filming… this is the exact same tact. After Rob/Twigs never got married in Aug, then its because of troubles. How about they didn’t get married in Aug because they never planned on getting married in Aug. lol. Rob/Twigs both have heavy work schedules and Rob’s got super busy this summer/fall and so is twigs. They had to know that a year ago. Doesn’t seem like big surprise. The only reason why they were seen together a lot last fall was his film was cancelled. Rob & twigs were seen with Robs parents at dinner last week, his mom went to Manchester to watch her dance performance – doesn’t seem like theres trouble at all… and maybe they are in no rush to get married and quiet honestly – isn’t that best. Take your time.

  24. Louise says:

Well why does he keep googling himself? If it upsets him so much then rise above it. It’s not going to change. He should know that by now.

    • word says:

Hey even poor, unfamous people have haters. He needs to learn that even if he was not rich and famous, there would still be people in his life talking smack about him.

    • Emily C. says:

      Seriously.

The rest of the world, we peons who are not rich white men, see and hear hatred about ourselves all the time, and not only on the internet. I guess this is the worst thing that’s ever happened in his life, and it appears not to be even hatred of him personally, but racist hatred of his girlfriend. And his “solution” is to sit there whining about YouTube comments he CHOSE to look at, which are the most hateful, might as well go read Stormfront or an MRA site.

  25. livinglavitalola says:

I do not get celebs who constantly bemoan haters and internet commenters. All that money and they sitting on the internet just like the rest of us???

  26. Moi says:

I agree with his perception on this subject as well. I personally sit back and take what is being said about celebrities online with a grain of salt and do my best to keep logical in the fact that when it comes down to it, they are simply human just like us non-celebrities. I feel at times that it is an uphill battle to defend celebrities online, but I will continue to do so if I feel they need defending. Reading some of the hate will make me start to feel poisoned, but then I realize that the person writing such hatred is the one who is internally (mentally/emotionally) full of poison and I feel for them.

  27. Katija says:

He sounds really out of touch. YES, the 4Chan/racist YouTube commenters are probably icky “basement dwellers,” but I have a normal family and normal friends… my friends and I all comment on women’s interest/fashion/celebrity sites… my parents comment on Russian news sites (which I’m happy for them about, because it lets them keep their Russian typing skills in tact… mine are like, non-existent LOL), my brothers are big into bodybuilding and car forums… it’s just a new way of consuming media and a new way to “unwind” when you’re home from work.

The comment saying that people who comment aren’t “normal” is kinda so broad as to be offensive. If we’re talking about people who EXCLUSIVELY leave hater comments to like, semi-famous YouTubers or post non-stop in mean-spirited, “trolling” forums, then yeah, no, there’s probably something a little “off” with that person. But to say all the people who comment on ANYTHING aren’t normal is crazy. People have felt the urge to reply to writers/journalists for a long time, it’s where the concept of “Letters the the Editor” came from. tl;dr, get with the times, R-Patz, this is how New Media works and you kinda sound like a grumpy old man. (Guess I’m not “normal” for saying that 🙂 )

  28. Po says:

Yeah go check out the gossip cop boards.

  29. Jayna says:

YouTube is overrun with trolls, the worst of the worst. It’s enough to make you weep for mankind.

    • Katija says:

I very recently left a comment on this youngish makeup vlogger’s channel – she was like 20-ish and obviously kind of newer – just saying, “oh, this is such a gorgeous eye makeup look, I’m gonna try it this weekend, I’ve subscribed to your channel!”

Someone replied, “u r f***ing retarded if u think this looks good, just like she is, b***h”

Welllll okaaaaaaaaay then! Cannot FATHOM how someone could get that mad about eyeshadow? It’s like, well…. ooooookay. 😉 I admire people who put themselves out there like that and follow the “if you don’t have anything nice to say” rule.

      • Josefa says:

I’ve read people being called the n-word because they like cats better than dogs.

Some people just like being nasty and picking fights online. That’s why I have a problem with the online PC patrol – a lot of the time I don’t know if they are genuinely upset and want changes or if they just want to pick fights online about the most sensitive subjects. Because, mind you, trolls can also have perfect grammar and rich vocabulary.

  30. My two cents says:

He is spot on. It amazes me how rude and horrible some people are, especially on twitter. They are judge, jury and executioner. I often wonder how people can say such horrible things and not feel bad about it? The anonymity of social media has inspired some really nasty people.

    • livinglavitalola says:

“They are judge, jury and executioner.”

The same can be said abt ppl on this site and sites like it(tmz, radar, etc.), sadly. I like reading celebs gossip but I always keep in mind that it’s just that…gossip. Yet folks confuse this stuff with hard core facts. They sit online bashing & judging all based on what they think they know is the truth. I can see how a celeb would be annoyed with this but it’s useless speaking on it. They’re going to do it anyway and if I was a celeb I honestly wouldn’t concern myself with what ppl, who don’t know me, have to say about me and my life.

    • word says:

The people that write nasty comments on the internet are people who are nasty in real life. It’s just now with such a public forum we are seeing just how many cruel people there really are in the world. There have always been mean people in this world and always will be. The internet has just put a spotlight on them, that’s all.

  31. bns says:

Youtube, L Chat, and People.com are the worst comment boards on the internet.

  32. SamiHami says:

Hm. Well, I just checked the first few hits on youtube for “Nelson Mandela Funeral.” I didn’t see any that had a hateful first comment with bunches of up arrows. Actually, aside from a few trolls, most of the posts were respectful. So, uh, making up crap to make a point I guess?

  33. Tia says:

Twitter is the worst! And places like tmz and daily mail.
My boyfriend and I read the comments on daily mail just for a laugh because people sounds so hilarious in all their stupidity , but I guess it’s not that funny if it’s about you.

  34. Tig says:

I came to rely on this site for a good laugh, and esp the fashion posts. Other comment boards can make you want to weep-so vile and nasty. And pretty clear what type of commenters he’s referring to.
Life is supposed to open in U.S. in early Dec. I hope it gets a decent roll out, as like them both as actors- esp curious to see Dean D as James Dean.

  35. siri says:

I don’t know why I like this man. Didn’t see Twilight, but I came across Remember Me, and I really liked him in it. So he better behave, and doesn’t call me a demon…

  36. Paige says:

He does have a point. People and YouTube are the worst when it comes to internet trolls. The comments are always vile and disgusting.

  37. Crazy horse says:

    .

  38. Not here says:

    ???

  39. carol says:

There’s something self-hating about looking up what other people — who don’t even know you — said about you on the net. Why is he doing that? Why is he his girlfriend doing that?

We all know that evil exists. Do we have to dwell on it?

When is he and his girlfriend going to start focusing on the positive and do something positive about a cause they believe in? As rich and famous as they are, they are in a good position to make a difference.

    • Anne says:

True, but when you put yourself forward creatively, there’s always a part of you that is going to wonder about how other people respond to you – be that response positive or negative. And, in that opening, there’s often an inner uncertainty that can be sensitive to trash talk and criticism, even when it’s blatantly mean spirited and abusive.

    • Chica says:

I think you don’t understand how it works. His gf;s social media is a part of her PR process for her work. How about you go swing by her IG and se what bs she’s constantly getting and solely getting bc she’s a black girl who is daring to date Robert Pattinson.

  40. Emily C. says:

“Waah, punching myself in the face really hurts!”

I once saw people get into a vicious argument on YouTube about a pretty picture of flowers playing over flute music. Misogynistic, racist, and classist slurs included, of course. That’s YouTube though, not the internet as a whole. And insulting all commenters on the internet because of that is ignorant and foolish.

And yes, he insulted all people who comment on the internet. He didn’t use qualifiers. I guess he does spend a lot of time on the worst places on the internet, and it’s influenced him quite a lot. Calling a large and diverse group of people names is something that seems to have grown more popular on the internet in the last few years.

Why doesn’t he DO something about the racist hate he sees of his girlfriend? He can’t change YouTube comments, but he does have the power, wealth, and profile to do quite a lot to combat racism. Plenty of excellent charitable organizations would love to have his help. But instead he’s sitting around (in a basement, maybe?) complaining about commenters on the internet. How very meta.

  41. 7-11's Hostage says:

” I had to go on holiday to an extravagant secret location this year because I was afraid of someone photographing my gut.” There’s a great deal I could write about this. I won’t.

  42. Angela says:

When he didn’t say a thing about the online racist hate he was accused of not standing up for his woman, now he’s doing promo and have an opportunity to address this suff, y’all like “stop whining, there are bigger problems in the world”, he can’t win.

    • jean says:

when much is given, much is expected.

he and his girlfriend need to step up and shine a light — and yes, stop whining.

they’ve got everyone’s attention…put it to good use — they both have a fan base:
use this as a teachable moment to publicize the damage of internet bullying rather than send out self-pitying comments and keep reading the nasty ones about themselves.
