Yep, and good on him for doing so – Education for Girls!!!!!!!! Yeah!

  2. Gg says:

He is laying an ever loving smackdown on the world!! And the people he’s talking to deserve it. Long live Pope Francis!

  3. Pedro45 says:

Yes, educating them on everything except agency over their own bodies.

    • frisbee says:

Yup, and here’s a thought. How about educating men about girls as well.

    • Jay says:

Word. Catholicism (and many religions) are deeply rooted in misogyny and general intolerance–after all, religion is man-made. Let’s not pretend one can tote Catholicism and at the same time reject the foundation of it. As awesome as this pope seems, he’s still promoting an institution that has been largely destructive throughout history.

    • The Bucket Lady says:

      Thank you!

    • Val says:

A bunch of people advocating to Pope Francis for acceptance of female priests got arrested the other day.

      • Ennie says:

who arrested them? the swiss guard???

      • jwoolman says:

There is no theological obstacle to female priests, male priests are just tradition. Once enough Catholics want female priests, it will happen. Same with married priests, which already exist in the Catholic Church because of (for example) married Anglican priests who converted (the line of ordination is considered unbroken at least in high-church Episcopalians who are pretty much the same as Roman Catholics minus the pope). Many years ago, I read an interview with an American Catholic bishop who also said there was no absolute barrier to female priests. He speculated that they would first be ordained by a retired bishop who had nothing to lose. Then he suggested that for all he knew, maybe it already had happened. Closely related churches have female clergy. Concerning married priests- there is such a priest shortage in so many countries that have cultural problems with celibate clergy, including South America, that it’s quite possible this particular pope isn’t so opposed to the idea privately at least.

For decades in the U.S. at least, women have been carrying and administering Communion when needed. That was a big step forward from the rather bizarrely justified “keep women away from the altar” attitudes in my childhood. So things do change, just usually slowly. The real obstacle is regular people, once they change their attitudes then the Vatican will eventually follow. There’s just a generational lag. Remember that the flower child generation is now drawing social security, so the gap is closing….

One step at a time. It is unrealistic to expect the Catholic Church to do a rapid 180 on every problematic, long-standing issue, as much as we would like it to. I, as well as many Catholics, are hopeful that Pope Francis can begin to move the Church in a direction consistent with its original principles which are based upon Jesus’ message of loving one’s fellow human beings. In my opinion he is doing a great job of that.

I’m with you, just glad there is SOME movement towards progress, equality, and focusing on the right things. Certainly more is needed of course, but baby steps are still steps.

      • ninal says:

Exactly- institutional change the way Francis is doing it is staggering, and it should be applauded.

      • jinglebellsmell says:

Well said, Christy. Change doesn’t happen overnight. But it’s happening…

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

It’s a good thing that I scrolled before (redundantly) posting.
      Oh, Francis. :-/

    • laura in LA says:

      Good point, Pedro45!

  4. Abbott says:

Only way the pope’s trip could get better is if he’s friend collected by Taylor Swift and comes on stage and starts singing some Gregorian hymns.

  5. Birdix says:

I just wept through his words at the 9/11 site. So moving.

  6. MediaMaven says:

Did he end that educating girls statement by saying “I’m looking at you, PMK” – then do a mic drop?

  7. InVain says:

Kudos to the Pope…not Catholic, but I can certainly appreciate his generous outlook and modern leadership style. Very appealing and refreshing.

AND, I really came here to say that the Kim Z. link made me HAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA. I’m evil for finding joy in that shit.

  8. Elizabeth says:

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ age is listed as “46” because that’s her official age. @ lot of people suspect she’s older.

They moved way too fast, and seemed more into the wedding and image of it than an actual relationship, but who knows.

    • Lex says:

What a surprise………. getting engaged and married in the space of a few months of meeting… literally nothing would go wrong!

I guess it doesn’t matter – if they had some happy times in their marriage thats great!
it may not be ending happily though as they removed each others pictures from social media………
Short marriages like this undermine the weight and importance of marriage :[

    • Magpie says:

Yeah, what a surprise (said no one).

That was just rebound from the henry carvil travesty.
