Kate Hudson shows off her abs to promote Fabletics: incredible?

Kate Hudson posted the photo above on Instagram to promote her Fabletics athletic clothing line, which is offering the boyshort and bra combo she’s modeling for Valentine’s Day. Before I gush about Kate Hudson’s figure, I would like to point out that Fabletics is a subscription type service which has been widely criticized for luring customers with low cost clothing, charging them $50 a month regardless of whether they buy anything and making it extremely difficult to cancel. You can read reviews of Fabletics here and here. I was looking into Fabletics a few months ago and decided to stay far away. For cute inexpensive athletic clothing, I have much better luck with the daily shopping sites like Ideel and Ruelala. (I’ve used both sites for years and can vouch for them, but full disclosure I get a kickback if you sign up through either of those links. Plus they also have negative reviews on the same sites I linked for Fabletics, so maybe the criticism of Fabletics is overblown.)

Now, Kate Hudson looks incredible right? She’s also one of the few celebrities who will admit what she does to maintain her figure without resorting to fibs like “running after my kids.” Kate has said that she counts calories using MyFitnessPal (which is free and I highly recommend it) and that she exercises every day. Judging from her Instagram, she indulges in the occasional “treat” too without going overboard.

My favorite quote from Kate on weight and fitness is from last year. “You work your ass off, that’s the only way. [And] you have to eat right. Everybody wants some sort of secret and there just isn’t, it’s just you have to work out.” You do have to work out but the prevailing wisdom is that weight loss is 80-90% diet and the rest is exercise. So many celebrities have said that. It’s clear that Kate is busting her butt too as she mentioned because you could bounce a quarter off those abs.

In terms of that outfit I couldn’t wear that to the gym no matter what shape I was in. That looks like pajamas or underwear. Maybe Kate is thinking of wearing it for Nick Jonas, though.

Oh, for a second, I thought that was me. Not really. Wow, her body is incredible. I read (on here, I think) that she worked out like five hours a day. No wonder that’s not me.

    • Lilalis says:

Really? I thought sie was the one who said, there’s no need to exercise for hours and hours as long as you do something every day. Maybe 5hrs/day was her post baby regimen?

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, I think you’re right, it was post baby.

      • FLORC says:

It was post baby and not a regular routine. That said loads of celebs will say they don’t work out or diet or whatever when it’s all how they lable it.
Many don’t count pilates or yoga as workouts.

    • bettyrose says:

LOLZ!! Right, Gnat? It’s like looking in a mirror. But seriously if I had her abs I wouldn’t even own any shirts. Just sports bras and yoga pants.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, me, too. My stomach would be exposed at every opportunity. Hi! Nice to see you! How’s your husband? Want to see my abs?

      • arabella says:

I lol’ed at that bettyrose, but you’re right. I wouldn’t own any shirts. Or pants for that matter. I’d let my bum do the talking.

    • OverFirstAve. says:

She looks Amazing. One of the Best bodies in Hollywood, IMO.

      • smith says:

As I scan down the page there are a lot of comments about the usual stuff we comment upon πŸ˜‰ BUT everyone please be warned about Fabletics and its business practices. (I know CB mentioned in her write-up but it was too brief a mention IMO).

Yes they are a subscription service but if you google you will see the underhanded way business is conducted and the thousands of complaints that have been logged. Words like “scam, fraud and breach of trust” are used, and while the company maintains its innocence (although it has changed some of the practices) it’s still very much a situation of buyer beware.

        So …beware.

  2. Addison DeWitt says:

She looks awesome; but for some reason I thought she was one of those people who smokes ciggs to stay thin? I want to say that I read that years ago. I hope that’s not the case, because her figure is very fitness inspiring.

    • QQ says:

Ive heard that and Pills, she annoys me like no other for some reason… like Her face? her Movies I cant….. Like I don’t find her particularly talented nor beautiful and I also don’t buy this hippie cali girl persona of hers IDK .. but sure great promo on the hot body!

      • Hawkeye says:

        Agree with you, QQ!

      • Jules says:

        This………….talk about the ultimate nepotism…………

      • Esmom says:

I’m with you, too. She bugs me to no end, always strikes me as smug. Her bod is smokin’ but no way would I sign up for this stuff.

      • BooBooLaRue says:

thank you I couldn’t agree more – her smugness irritates me like no other

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she’s really cute and has a great body. Wouldn’t call her beautiful or very talented, though.

      • FLORC says:

This girl is photogenic. She’s gorgeous imo. Talent? Less so.

And speaking to her workout line… I’ve bought a few pieces. They’re good, but expensive. Carrie Underwood should be taking notes because Calia sucks.

    • Zip says:

In the end it’s still the diet. Smoking affects the appetite of some people so they eat less. I would not want to eat anything either if I had that shit taste in my mouth. πŸ˜€

      • Kitten says:

Diet diet diet. It’s all a numbers game.

I’ve been working out every day for 20 years but you know what I do when I want to lose 10 lbs? I log my calories. Yes it’s annoying as f*ck but it works.

I don’t change my workout routine at all, I just count calories.

      • Korra says:

It’s kinda the worst. I have to lose 30 pounds right now and I’ve just been bad at counting recently. I think my deficit is too high with training for a 10k and a new strength training program. Plus my it band keeps hurting like a bitch and it utterly demotivates me to watch my intake. I need those sour patch man. Not those 20 grapes.

I like that bra and boyshorts combo she has. It has me motivated for today at least. When I lose 15 pounds ill treat myself to a new outfit.

      • Kitten says:

@Korra-Do you use Myfitnesspal at all? It makes it much easier to keep track.

I hear ya because when I joined a new gym earlier this year I was going hard on the weight-training and was craving high-fat protein like crazy. Finally cut that sh*t out and added more carbs and leaned up, lost like 12 lbs. Then again, I always gain weight in the summer..it’s all those dresses man, like wearing a muumuu every day…

But yeah grapes vs Sour Patch Kids: no contest. It’s not even a fair fight for poor grapes.

      • Lauren II says:

That body is not from ciggies alone.
There are countless people who are overweight/obese who smoke.

Kate has had 2 children! She does work her ass off and exercise.
However, her private life is bizarre and another matter altogether……

      • korra says:

Yeah I use MFP. But you touched on something I’ve ignored!! Macros. When I started with MFP in April I made sure to get my macro intake for fat, protein, and carbs on a regular basis. Lost quite a bit and felt fine. I haven’t done that recently and with the additional running it’s probably why I’m not feeling it. I need to adjust my macros and find what will work.

I’m going to have to adjust my weight training and running to integrate the two better too. Start slow :(. I’m a beginning runner and this strength program is butt and legs focused (the author also really doesn’t like running) so I’m probably not getting enough rest either. But I hate rest days. I never thought I’d be that person that would actually be itching to go for a run. I sweat and feel so much more accomplished after running 3-4 miles. I should go to yoga on rest days, but blegh.

      • FLORC says:

Goldie or Kate said they have the same habit of sipping the same cold cup of coffee all day long. That can absolutely reduce your hunger.

        Kitten
Love MFP! It makes it all simpler with attainable goals.
But summer weight is never an issue. Heat makes me only crave popsicles WHICH is awesome if you only use outshine or juice only popsicles. Cold foods kicks your metabolism in just enough to counter the change in temp internally. Not a lot, but some. And then there’s seltzers….
If I gain in summer it’s alcohol, but I see your point on dresses. Too easy to forget about pants fitting.

And have you bought fabletics? It’s really good. $$, but quality stuff.

    • Wellsie says:

If smoking alone kept me looking like that I’d start again! ; )

  3. Katie says:

I use fabletics and love it. But you do have to pay attention to their monthly emails with your outfit choices because you only have 5 days today cancel. If you decline your choices in those 5 days, there is no charge. And if you don’t, yes they charge you but credit your account with a “free outfit” that you can use later. So I think the criticism might be slightly overblown. I like their clothes and the fit.
All that said, I would never ever wear what she’s wearing to the gym or yoga. It’s too much like underwear!

    • Giddy says:

If I had her body I would wear it to church!πŸ˜€

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      @Katie
I looked at her stuff and it looked cute. Do you get a whole outfit every time, or is it pants one time and a sports bra next time, if you don’t mind my asking?

      • The initial outfit you get the whole thing. Depending on the number of pieces, etc, you have a baseline price and the prices go up for there. After your first purchase, you are given a set of choices every month, and you can either choose a complete outfit, or purchase the items separately. The process are “VIP” prices after the initial purchase, so while they aren’t as low as your first one, can be fair too. I have liked most of the things I have gotten from them, with a few exceptions.

    • I agree with you about Fabletics. I think that as long as you’re paying attention, it’s pretty fair. I have the UK version, but have never had an issue, and in fact have beefed-up my rather pathetic exercise wardrobe because of it. One lament I DO have with them is the same lame I have with every other manufacturer of women exercise clothes. The bras and tops are rarely constructed to withstand heavy athletics for a long period of time. I don’t have particularly big boobs, but I have found very few bras where I don’t have the urge to grab my chest during intense interval training.

Yes, she has a rocking bod. It’s a lean, Hollywood-fit bod, as opposed to an athlete’s bod, but it rocks nonetheless.

  4. Bridget says:

Fabletics is indeed really poor quality and very hard to cancel. I had a couple of friends try it and they weren’t exactly thrilled with the experience.

And why exactly is Kate Hudson supposed to be some sort of athletic wear expert? Like, why am I supposed to see her seal of approval and think that’s the workout wear for me?

    • FLORC says:

I’ve bought a few pieces and I think it’s good quality. And i’m very hard on my workout gear. They almost always make it into the dryer on high heat. I’m so bad with that.

Maybe there are good batches and bad batches, but I’m surprised at how well they hold up.

      • Becks says:

FLORC, I agree. I actually really like Fabletics, it’s really affordable and the quality is good. I no longer spend $$$ on Lululemon!

      • FLORC says:

Ugh lulu has the quality of athletics for 5xs the price. Some items and styles were worth it, but majority IMO not ao

  5. snowflake says:

Her caption says valentines day so I don’t think that outfit is for the gym

  6. Mrs. Darcy says:

I almost bought something but read too much negative stuff about getting out of the contract. I really don’t get why they set up businesses this way, I would be way more likely to shop with a place that I didn’t think was trying to scam me. I don’t understand why anyone would sign up for this unless you are a professional athlete – how many sports bras and leggings do you need?

    • layla says:

“how many sports bras and leggings do you need? ”

Well, I work out 3 times a week (circuit training, HIIT, weighted high impact/high intensity) . In the 30mins circuits I do (30 minutes is ALL YOU NEED people, not hours and hours of mindless inefficient cardio!) , I finish sweaty and wet. That doesn’t take into account that every single day I take my dogs for at least a 45-60min walk or run. I do laundry once a week… so, do the math! πŸ˜‰ (hint: it equals lots of active wear – haha)

      • Exactly. If you are working out to the point where you will make some serious changes, you will not be able to “re-wear” a sports bra. The ones I have barely hold up for the entire workout.

    • FLORC says:

      I need a lot!
I’m a part time trainer so I need to show up not smelling or sweaty from 1 class to the next.
And that’s not including that I might work out on my own earlier that day. Count that in as 3 outfits a day at most. Even if laundry is done daily they need a day to dry so 6 or 7 pairs of each article minimum. And that’s not counting the other factors like… Heat, Cold, Rain, Terrain, Indoors, Type of Workout, Race Day, High Visibility for low light running, Or simply wanting to look cute.
And lord forbid they get the dreaded Permastink! Then that’s kept with just personal use.

So, I can never have too many πŸ˜€

  7. Lilacflowers says:

Does Kate actually work any more?

    • beanie says:

Work? When did she ever work? She hasn’t had to lift a finger for anything her entire life. Loathe the little tramp.

  8. funckes says:

There was an article on the Huffington site about this clothing line. Someone tried to use a gift card, but ran into problems. So she tried emailing and had three different replies from from three different people.
This site seems unorganized and a little misleading.

  9. Andrea says:

Her clothing intrigues me (I am always looking for good quality yoga/cardio clothes) but when I looked I just wanted to buy a few things, not sign up for anything. I got scared and left their website and found Mika clothing instead, which has some great stuff for hot yoga! I know sometimes sites have a way around it (for instance I can order honest company stuff without getting a monthly package), is there a way to order a one off outfit or should I not bother?

  10. Andrea says:

Her body is amazing. I am envious because at 34, I wish I had my body when I was 26 and it didn’t look as great as her does now. I am trying a combo hot yoga/yoga/barre fit/bootcamp classes and using myfitnesspal/fitbit and have managed to lose 10 lbs since January, but I still would like to a lose another 30…darn you PCOS. I have also cut out wheat and egg because I am sensitive to those items that have helped me lose I believe as well.

    • Kitten says:

Barre is intense. I tagged along with a co-worker to try out a class at The Bar Method studio downstairs from my office and it was so brutal. They did this pretzel thing–ZOMG no stop that sh*t my body doesn’t go that way.

      • Andrea says:

My barre class hasn’t done the pretzel thing yet, but the bootcamp class made my right thigh ache for 3 days afterwards last week. Ouchie. I am going to bootcamp tonight. Wish me luck! πŸ™‚

      • korra says:

My legs felt like jello after barre. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to walk home.

      • FLORC says:

I tried that class a few times. It’s…. Intense. Like TRX you can’t move yourself out of bed for a week after an hour class. Barre though… Not for me. Great workout overall for muscle building and flexibility, but ugh… I hated it.

    • Becks says:

I do Barre a couple of times a week to supplement my running. It is the best workout, IMO, but it’s freaking hard! I have been doing it for 4 years, and I am sore after each class. Its no joke.
I must love torture because I keep going back for more, LOL

      • Andrea says:

I do a bootcamp class with a ugi ball once a week, barre fit once a week, followed by pilates/hot yoga/ or hatha in between. I find the combo really works for me. I did hatha last night, so time for some cardio (bootcamp) tonight! Bootcamp to me is by far the hardest and most calorie burning. I think my barre class is either weak or my legs are strong, because although a good workout, I don’t get the intensity I get from bootcamp.

    • qwerty says:

Re: PCOS – cut out milk and dairy. Better yet, go full vegan. My thyroid hormones were out of control and after 2 years of treatment (my doc is very good, I actually had 2 great docs at one point) I still couldn’t set the right dose cause EVERY DAMN TIME I upped my hormones, after 2 or 3 months it was already too low again. Went high carb low fat vegan, have been for 7 months now, my hormones are great and I’m actually reducing my does atm, after 9 months without needing to change it (seemed impossible a year or 2 ago).
Milk is baby calf growth hormone. It’s supposed to make a huge cow out of a tiny calf in a matter of months… it comes from a recently-pregnant mother of another species. It messes with all your hormones.

  11. snarky mcsnark says:

Kate Hudson has always been my spirit animal! I love her whole vibe and style! Some people may call her smug, I just call it an I know I’m great and I don’t give a f*ck what others think attitude!

  12. Nicolette says:

I don’t know what she’s been doing but she looks younger and her skin looks amazing. If she’s having anything done then this is how you do it right. Look yourself but freshened up, without the hideous cat woman eyes and frozen face.

  13. Lisa says:

Too precious, I’m going to puke. Her company is in trouble, isn’t it? Tweeting heart undies at your customers isn’t going to get them their money back.

  14. Sara says:

Eh, she doesn’t get a ton a credit from me, although she does look great. She doesn’t appear to have anything else to do other than worry about her appearance.

  15. raincoaster says:

I’m working with a designer on some hacker-themed workout gear (yeah, I’m a contrarian) and I do like the designs of Fabletics. I was intrigued by their ability to deliver great looking clothes at such a reasonable price point. But the whole Columbia Record Club business model gives me the creeps.
