Will the Cambridges attend their 10-year university reunion this week?

Here are some additional photos from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s trip to Scotland on Friday. During Will and Kate’s visit to Dundee, Scotland, they stopped by Abertay University, which is apparently home to some of Scotland’s best and brightest programmers and game developers. The Cambridges got to try out some of the games designed by students, during which William easily won the game and Kate, defeated, admitted that “I have a lot to learn.” To which William told the students: “I can’t educate her, she’s not interested.” The students told media outlets that “The Duchess needed a little bit of help.” So… now we know. Kate is not a gamer. She’s probably not all that great with technology, I would guess. Maybe she even has a flip-phone too!

Meanwhile, this little item appeared in one of the Daily Mail’s gossip columns:

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could be reliving their student days and painting the town red this week if my spies are right about them attending a reunion of the St Andrews University ‘class of 2005’.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman declined to be drawn on whether the bash in Chelsea on Friday is in the royal diaries, but the 100 guests who have been invited are said to be optimistic.

And their hopes will be raised by the fact that neither Wills nor Kate – seen here in her carefree university days – are due to attend any official Royal event that day. Funnily enough, the pair enjoyed a quiet dinner together in St Andrews on Thursday.

[From The Daily Mail]

I’ve never attended any reunions for high school or college, so I have real comment about the idea of attending reunions in general. I mean, if you want to, go for it. But I do find it odd that a big 10-year reunion for a Scottish university is taking place in London. And no, it wouldn’t surprise me if Will and Kate found some way to attend. I could see where just William would attend and Kate would stay at home too.

PS… The big Spectre premiere tonight! I wonder what Kate will wear? Do you think it will be a repeat, or will she actually wear a new dress? Hm.

    “I can’t educate her, she’s not interested.”

    Yep, sounds about right.

    • Jen says:

He never has anything nice to say about her, it’s always a put-down. It’s like he doesn’t even like her.

      • Betti says:

I think in this instance its just playful banter – nothing mean intended. I’m not a gamer and have no interest in it either.

      • Jen says:

Yes, in his way he probably is joking. It just comes off weird. Like, it would be nice to hear him say “oh, she’s really good with….”, or “maybe an xbox would be a good idea for Christmas, I think we could have a laugh together with it”. Maybe he’s just not an affectionate person….

      • FLORC says:

Came off playful. It’s in how you are already perceiving the context.
No put down. Just cute IMO.

      • Bettyrose says:

Jen, ITA. As an isolated incident it’s harmless, but a pattern of such comments in public contexts comes across as passive-aggressive. These people are public figures not your socially awkward neighbors. They know the weight of their words.

      • Jen says:

“socially awkward neighbors” lol…thanks Bettyrose! That sums it up 🙂

      • Feeshalori says:

There’s a saying: Many a true thing is said with a smile. So who knows where that remark could be coming from.

    • neutral says:

Perhaps he meant it simply in the context of what they were discussing – gaming. And perhaps she thinks she has more interesting things to do than play computer games?

      • Jen says:

        She “thinks” she does.

      • JustJen says:

My husband has tried to teach me how to play several games, on the computer and xbox and I’m just useless. Plus I have no interest in it. I’d rather do laundry if that tells you anything. I’m guessing the majority of graduates live closer to London…

  2. Deedee says:

My prediction for the Spectre premiere is that Kate wears another long black lace gown. She will also flirt with Daniel Craig and ask him what he does when he’s not working for the Secret Service.

    • Chrissy says:

      LOL!

    • MinnFinn says:

COL (chuckle out loud). New black dress with a very high slit, hair down and hopefully Daniel Craig will have grown a beard so that Kate will have something to talk about with him.

    • candice says:

Just curious, does attending a Film Premiere count as royal “work”? When you think of the work that Harry has done lately as well as Camilla and Sophie, it seems more like a night out to me.

      • candice says:

PS – From the media’s perspective (I’m talking to YOU, Daily Fail), it’s more “interesting” to post pictures of Kate attending sports events, film premieres, etc. and keeping the focus on her clothes and general appearance v.s. covering a charity event hosted by Sophie or a speech Camilla gives on Osteoporosis. You only have to look at the # of comments the Kate posts receive….geez, she could attend the opening of an envelope and the Fail would be all over it.

      • LAK says:

As president of Bafta, any Premieres that William attends which benefit the cinema and TV benevolent fund counts as work. for everyone else or indeed any other time he attends, it’s a fun event and doesn’t count.

The fund puts on screenings all the time, but royals seem to attend only the big ones ie the ones backed by big studios and are A list all the way.

      • Zinjojo says:

I’m wondering if attending the 10-year reunion will count as “work”. If so, then I bet at least William shows up.

Gotta push those numbers up before vacation time!

  3. Birdix says:

I went to my 20th college reunion this past weekend and absolutely loved it. Far enough out that people don’t have much to prove, you are who you are and there’s not much to be done about it at this age, but close enough that you have strong connections with enough people who remember when you were young, and silly, ambitious and passionate. The college years are so intense and formative, and stepping back into that environment for a weekend was such a fun, weird reminder of who I, and my friends, once were.
Plus Rob Lowe was skulking around campus (visiting his kids who attend) and apparently cooking breakfast in his boxers.

  4. Betti says:

I think she’ll turn up in something guaranteed to get on the front pages tomorrow with everyone fawning over how amazing she looks *eyeroll* – I just hope she doesn’t flash anyone.

  5. Fanny Chanel says:

She’s so annoying. Now she poses like a model for pap photos??? See first pic. She’s not interested in anything but being a celebrity.

  6. daisy says:

Can believe she is no good at computing because she is dim
cant imagine what she discusses with a politician probably her
makeup and hair… she is so not right for the role… she is a fake mannequin thats all

  7. daisy says:

Can believe she is no good at computing because she is dim
cant imagine what she discusses with a politician probably her 3
makeup and hair… she is so not right for the job as a duchess… only good at being a robot

    • Kylie says:

I mean she only went to one of the most prestigious universities. But people want to claim she is dim because she is not into gaming.

      • Andrea says:

People claim she is dim because she is a crap public speaker and doesn’t appear to do much work.

      • Betti says:

Nope – these claims are made when she makes comments like ‘Can you test the smell by smelling it?’ or asking ‘Do they still make Faberge Eggs?’.

The latter being particularly embarrassing for her as her degree is in art history and she should know this as those eggs have an esteemed place in art history (research them). A Faberge Imperial Egg has not been made in almost 100 years and out of the 50 made only 43 survive. They are quite extraordinary and very very beautiful. The craftsmanship that went into making each one was exquisite and can’t be matched with today’s technology. They were all made by hand. I saw a few on display at The Queens gallery a few years ago and when you see them up close the detail and perfection just blows ur mind.

      • Merritt says:

        @Betti

Bad at small talk does not equal stupid.

The whole egg thing was discussed to death years ago, and it was a silly complaint then and a silly complaint now.

People are ridiculous with the revisionist history here. When Diana was alive there were stories that Sophie found her annoying because all she did was talk about fashion. But now that has all been glossed over.

      • Olenna says:

I don’t think she’s dim in an academic sense, just clueless about the world and life in general. This is how she was brought up, coddled and directed by her mother, sheltered and probably dictated to by her husband. And, this cluelessness is much of her basic personality as well. William said she’s not interested in gaming; well, I don’t think she’s interested in much outside her looks and her family and no matter what she’s exposed to outside these interests, nothing registers for long or has an enduring impact on her mindset.

      • notasugarhere says:

She married into a family that has access to the largest Faberge collection in the world. The fact that an Art History major knows next-to-nothing about Faberge, plus she knew what exhibit she was attending? I don’t think we get to dismiss that and never discuss it again. It will be brought up constantly because it is indicative of her lack of preparation, poor small talk skills, and lack of knowledge about the family institution into which she married.

  8. Barrett says:

    Does she wear extensions?

I have very thick hair so I used to think it was real. Now the thought always crosses my mind and annoys me.

    • Gossip is Great says:

She wears extensions and a wiglet (and fake eyelashes)

    • Sixer says:

No, she’s been infected by a Martian Hair Triffid.

    • Merritt says:

Does it really matter if she wears extensions? Many women do. So all the complains that she does are really just an attack on any woman who wears extensions.

      • LAK says:

No they are not. Saying so is hyperbole at it”s finest. You may as well accuse every single person who has ever commented on celebrities’ extensions. From Jen Aniston to John Travolta. Extensions are a regular option in the grooming repertoire of women. especially celebrity women. Extensions are fun how ever you wish to apply them.

The reason Kate’s extensions are discussed is because she denies them. She went as far as getting the palace to release a statement dissembling on the matter.

Which is even more ridiculous considering how long she was in the public eye without the extensions and one can pin point the moment she started using them.

        This is Kate without extensions/wiglet

Wondering how Kate maintains her ‘natural thick hair’ when you are looking at extensions is as ridiculous as wondering how Kylie maintains her ‘ natural big lips’ when she uses filler to make them that big.

      • Merritt says:

And? A lot of people don’t admit to using extensions, and they shouldn’t have to admit to it if they don’t want to. It is just people wanting to tear a person apart over something silly.

      • LAK says:

i’ve never met a single person who uses extensions who is ashamed of them or doesn’t admit to them. and i’ve never met anyone who has been judgemental about extensions except in instances where someone is pretending it’s all their own hair when we can all see it is not.

You are right that no one should have to admit to them if they don’t have to, but why would a public official lie about something so obvious? something that many women use?

What Kate is doing, and you are lauding, is going as far as using official government resources via that palace statement to lie about something that even you acknowledge is silly.

And when writers like Hilary Mantel describe her as a shop mannequin devoid of character whose only use is *ornamental and womb bearer, people like you get up in arms about it and or claim that the media has driven her to present this false image when in actual fact she colludes in this image as evidenced by the palace statement.

        *extensions, barbie doll etc

      • FLORC says:

        Merritt
Not admitting and outright/specific denial are not the same.
Plus they’re so common it’s just assued many times. There should be no stigma attached to it.

And this is NOT tearing her apart over extensions. If this is the conclusion you’ve misread or are avoiding the bulk of discussion here. It’s a very small percentage and from very select names that outright attack the extensions. Far from the majority and far from acceptance here.

IMO it’s still discussed because of the denial and in turn many fans/suporters/sugars, etc… that claimed there arre no extensions and her hair is all hers.
With it being beyond obvious it’s not discussed to attack. It’s discussed to directly counter the official claims she has none. That is not tearing.

      • Caroline says:

I know a number of women who wear extensions and would never admit it. If they say something like “wondering if I will get my hair cut”. This actually means will they remove the extensions.

      • FLORC says:

I can only speak to personal experience here. The ladies I know that deny extensions do it knowing we all know they’re fibbing. They just don’t admit it by speaking it. The rest don’t go around telling the world they do, but they also don’t go out of their way to deny.

I get some don’t want to admit a trait they hold to be beautiful isn’t authentic to them. I don’t get going out of your way to deny. It’s silly imo. Sort of like makeup. Why deny it? We can see a difference.

  9. OSTONE says:

I just finished reading The Royal We by the Fug girls, the Kate Middleton fan fiction Lauren graham is adapting and Mae Whitman starring in.. All I can say I hope they go to the reunion! The book is highly recommended, I finished it in 2 days!

  10. Andrea says:

She looked old even at University . . .OMG is she a vampire?! Will we see her age?

  11. candice says:

The Daily Mail features her latest “work” – attending the premiere of Shaun the Sheep:

“Despite a busy few days last week, which included hosting the Chinese President and making a trip to Dundee, the Duchess of Cambridge showed no signs of fatigue as she returned to work on Monday”.

I couldn’t read this with a straight face.

    • Gossip is Great says:

Why does she look so sour in nearly all the DM photos for that event? Not so much as a smile from her …

      • Citresse says:

        The dress is unfortunate.

      • Lucky Charm says:

I’ll give her a couple of points in her favor for the dress. At least it has bright color to it and isn’t solid black this time. And it seems long enough to not flash the children when she bends or crouches down.

      • LAK says:

i quite liked her dress and shoes at this event. Very reminiscent of Michelle Obama.

  12. Shelley says:

I know she is beautiful but somehow she hasn’t been looking it the past year. She looks old and her hair is just not woking for her.

  13. FLORC says:

Eh. Maybe when she consistently holds a work pace without floods and droughts her physical appearance will fall away in conversation as she will know give something else of substance to the conversation table.

As it is now this is just another mad dash of easy and fun and short events to boost numbers before extensive vacations where all motivation will reset.

If that is justified as hate call me a hater. I’m just wondering how a grown mother of 2 and a decade of prep time still can’t manage the basics and minimums of her easy job. Call me a hater for expecting more of an adult in the public eye on a podium like no other to embrace immediate and positive change.

    • notasugarhere says:

      Come sit by me.

      • FLORC says:

        *Takes seat next to Nota*

And edit. I meant to have the ability to cause immediate and positive change. Kate snaps her fingers and people will organize something. She only has to want it. Others do the work.

I’m coming around to her just being willfully naive to the world that isn;t in her immediate sight. It’s sad and shameful imo. I couldn’t care less about the eyeliner or wiglets, but refusing her role is sloth/apathy imo.

      • notasugarhere says:

Willfully naive, or she honestly just doesn’t care? She’s never shown an abiding interest in anything outside of self-grooming, vacation, and bagging a prince.

It makes sense that Charlene of Monaco does far less. Monaco has what, 30,000 people and most of them are wealthy. But Charlene has her own Foundation and does work in multiple countries about swimming and water safety. There aren’t a lot of people in Monaco to help, but Charlene does something anyway.

There are millions in the UK who are in serious trouble. W&K shying away from helping? How can anyone defend that behavior? They have all the opportunity and resources to bring about change, and they’d rather not help.

  14. Hazel says:

Eh. I tried a video game on an airplane once. It was a kid’s game & I was hopeless at it. Means nothing. Just not interested.

  15. The Original Mia says:

    Of course, she’s going.
