The Walking Dead: did they really kill that character? (spoilers)

Spoilers for last night’s episode of The Walking Dead follow
This week’s Walking Dead showed us the fate of the people outside Alexandria who were trying to lead the herd away from the compound, only to be waylaid by a loud horn. The group got separated, several characters we barely got a chance to know were killed by walkers, and ultimately a fan favorite, who dies in the comics in a different way, was seemingly eaten by walkers. Or was he? It was devastating to watch and I definitely thought that character had been eaten.

Did that character really die?
Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Nicholas found themselves beset on both sides by walkers as they stood on a dumpster, a fence with more walkers behind them. Nicholas kept spacing out and having trouble collecting himself, and he ultimately looked at Glenn said “Thank You” and then shot himself in the head, falling on top of Glenn and pushing him into the sea of zombies. We saw Glenn screaming, his face covered in blood and locked in abject terror, as guts were pulled out and eaten. I assumed the guts were Glenn’s and that he was a goner, but many people are theorizing that the guts were Nicholas’s and that Glenn will be able to escape somehow. Plus Glenn’s death was not included on The Talking Dead’s in memoriam segment last night. Given that Glenn was killed in the comics by people from an opposing, evil group, and that his circumstances are so dire, I think this is how he dies. It would make sense, too, for his kindness to unstable Nicholas to be the character trait that leads to his death.

Will Rick be saved?
Meanwhile Rick ran back to the RV and planned to help lead the herd away from Alexandria, only to be attacked by Wolves who had escaped from the siege. These were the exact same scumbags whom Morgan spared. Rick dispatched with them, killing some by hand and others with a machine gun. He then found a jar of baby food, presumably from Judith, in the pocket of one of their jackets. Rick’s hand is injured and he’s been nursing it, which may be a clue that something we’ve seen in the comics is about to happen.

Daryl, on the CB with Rick and heading toward Alexandria, heard the gunshots over the radio and turned around to rejoin Sasha and Abraham leading the horde. He previously abandoned Sasha and Abraham to go toward the noises in Alexandria, correctly guessing that the settlement wwas being attacked. Rick then tried to start the RV, only to find that it wouldn’t start again, just as the horde approached him. He can presumably by saved someone, if he’s able to call for help. (Note: the first version of this article stated that Daryl had gone to help Rick.)

Michonne, Heath and Scott make it back
The last we saw of Michonne and Heath they were leading a badly hurt Scott into Alexandria, having lost two other injured people in their group to the horde. Heath faced an identity crisis of sorts, weighing his urge for survival with his need to help everyone. In the pet shop, Michonne explained to him clearly that life or death choices needed to be made. “You haven’t had to do it any other way. You haven’t been through it… Have you ever done things that made you feel afraid of yourself afterward? Have you ever been covered in so much blood that you didn’t know if it was yours, or walkers’ or your friends?” Maybe that’s a small hint that Glenn was covered in Nicholas’s blood, not his own, and hopefully we’ll find out soon. It might not be next week, though. In the preview for episode 4, we see Morgan alone, suggesting that this will be a backstory episode and that we’ll have to wait even longer to figure out what happened to Glenn. Damnit. I’ll be watching though no matter what. I always do.

That was intense. Here is hoping Glenn makes it.

  2. PixieWitch says:

nooooooooooooooo! it can’t be. I think the walkers were eating that other guy that fell.

  3. Madpoe says:

Gut-Wrenching Heartache! TWD you snuffed out the light when you killed of Glenn!
As dark and dismal as a zombie world – one can’t say no to hope, love and faith! And you killed that for me by offing Glenn! WTF for?!? Insult to injury you’re going to let us wait 7 days just to discover, yup Glenn is really dead!
Glenn, you were more than a pizza delivery guy – <3 you!
Steven, amazing job! Will be watching for your future work!

  4. Rachel says:

Am I confusing something? Daryl didn’t go to help Rick. He turned around to meet back up with Sasha and Abraham. They showed him meeting back up with them at the head of the walker parade. Also Michonne and company *did* make it back to Alexandria. They walked into the field where the tractor trailer had been rammed into the watch tower.

    • Jackson says:

Ok, that’s what I thought on both points as well.

    • Celebitchy says:

OK this is what I get for trying to interpret stuff myself instead of reading the recaps thoroughly. I’ll fix these and I appreciate you clarifying for me!

    • Liv says:

What I don’t get is why they don’t shoot people who are eaten alive by zombies in the head? They always watch while people are ripped apart. Ugh, headshot y’all!

      • Twyla says:

Thank you! That’s what I’ve been saying this whole time. I would be pissed off if I was being eaten alive and no one just shot me to end it already.

  5. Jackson says:

I think he’s fine. It didn’t have much drama if that was the “Glenn is really ded” death scene. I just wasn’t feeling it. Although, I think he is the most expendable of the ‘Atlanta 5.’ I don’t see Michonne going anywhere anytime soon, either.

    • Rachel says:

I was livid when they showed the dead puppies in the pet stores. LIVID. Dropping the f bomb and yelling that producers had crossed a line. When Glenn fell off the dumpster into the walker horde, it was more just shock. Complete and utter shock. By the time the episode was over, I had processed it a little, and I was more angry over the crappy way it was filmed more than anything. I mean, honestly, the way they were standing and the way Nicholas shot himself, there’s no way he would have fallen into Glenn that way. After I got over complaining about that, we discussed the possibility of Glenn still being alive. Although, as much as I love Glenn, I’ll admit if they’ve used some weak scheme to get him out of that mess, I’m going to lose respect for the show.

  6. Dragonlady sakura says:

I’m gonna riot!! I jumped up last night and screamed at the television…and then cried. Even though I follow the comics and knew Glenn died a terrible fate, I was hoping the tv series would be different. My fingers are still crossed.

    • Kelly says:

Same here. I’ve read the comics and knew that Glenn dies but I screamed like someone was killing my family and then sobbed like an idiot. It was just so unexpected. So shocking.

  7. Arpeggi says:

I’ve been bracing myself for the past couple of months, knowing that this season had to be Glenn’s last. But while the characters’ faith varies greatly from the books, I was sort of hoping Glenn would go like in the comic, however gruesome that end is, it is a suiting one for him.

Also, now I have to worry about who’s gonna inherit Glenn’s faith… I was prepared for one awful lost this season, but not 2!

  8. TOPgirl says:

Noooo way. Glenn can’t die. I love him!!!

  9. FingerBinger says:

I like Glenn but I don’t care if he’s dead. The only death that got to me was Herschel’s.

    • Sayrah says:

That was awful. And then his head is lying there biting at the air and michonne finds it and puts him out of his misery.

    • Kori says:

I’ve never recovered from that one and I haven’t liked any of the deaths of significant characters. I hate them killing a few a season because it makes you afraid to invest in them. I still try though–I was investing in Nicholas (who I really disliked) because I liked the coward’s redemption thing–he could’ve gone on to be a hero. Nope. Over. And he may have taken Glenn out with him. I felt they squandered growth with Beth; wasted potential with Tyrese, T-Dog, Noah and Bob (and led to the ‘no more than 1 black man on the show’ issue) and are doing the same with Fr Gabriel (maybe he can continue to the coward redemption arc), Rosita and Abraham. We barely see them. The actors are good at making you care about them, the writers need to match that. I think they ruined Andrea before killing her. The only ones I think died when they ‘should’ were Shane, Lori and Dale. But *sob* Hershel, God I loved him. Every time we watched reruns I’m like ‘Hershel! sob. sob.’

    • Cali says:

Hershel was the WORST! Followed by Noah and then Glen 😢

  10. Sandruda says:

Nope, that blood and those guts were Nicholas’, not Glenn’s. I think he will make it out of at least THAT situation. (Maybe die a terrible death later on) . I really like his character but would be more devastated if carol, daryl, or michonne got killed off.

    • Chigirlie says:

I agree, I love Carol,Darryl, and Michonne but I would add Rick as a favorite as well. I like Glenn but I have a love for the tougher characters. Hershel’ s death was shocking and I was upset but I was also shocked by the death of Noah and the gruesomeness of it. I couldn’t figure out why they would show his face being ripped apart like that, it kind of bothered me.

  11. claire says:

I’m worried they’re going to confirm his death through the gang finding him as a walker. Poor Maggie. I hope that’s not the case – I hope his character is still alive and non-walkerfied!

    • Sayrah says:

How are there so many walkers if they devour everyone and leave nothing behind?

      • cat says:

@Sayrah Walkers don’t eat other walkers, only the living, the newly dead or animals. Once a human starts turn, the walkers ignore them. In earlier episodes, Glen, Rick and Michonne have used the walker scent to hide their human scent.

      • Arpeggi says:

@Cat, I think that what was meant is that with so many walkers feasting, there won’t be anything left by the time he turns…

      • Em' says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking too.
They don’t just bite you, they eat the sh!t out of you. Ergo, only the one dying of “natural” or human cause should end up walking despêrately looking for the plat du jour.

    • Saphana says:

the “confirm his death” is what makes me think he isnt dead. bigger characters usually get a better send off, mostly in regards how the rest of the characters finds it out. Walker Glenn is the only non silly way to show them. i like Glenn but having him survive that would really be a silly move.

  12. Jverell says:

I agree with most of the fellow posters. I was genuinely distraught after the dumpster scene. Love his character. As much as I hate Glenn being gone, if they try to have him miraculously survive the situation, I’ll lose respect for the show. As much as it sucks, it would be ridiculous for him to come back at this point. I will riot if they kill Rick though….seriously. Love me some Rick Grimes

    • Kori says:

The dumpster reminds me of the tank and Rick from the beginning of the show. He was trapped surrounded by walkers and it looked hopeless. I’m hoping the walkers feeding on Nicholas’s guts stalls them long enough for Glenn to roll under the dumpster. Because this would be an awful way for him to go–alone and with no one potentially knowing what happened and why, unless they come across him as a zombie (ala Merle & Sophia). All the other major deaths, the person wasn’t alone–the closest was Merle (and I still don’t think anyone knew of his heroics) when Darryl came across him and had to put him down and Sophia. But Dale, Shane, Lori, Andrea, Beth, Hershel, TDawg, Noah, Tyrese, Bob–all died in the presence of others.

      • Liv says:

Exactly! And he just crawled out of it! Let’s hope that this is what happens here too.

      • Mayamae says:

I hope that he’s alive. If he is they’re probably going to show us Nicholas’ corpse being discovered with Hershel’s watch.

  13. lowercaselois says:

How come we never discuss other Sunday shows like Homeland, Leftovers and the Affair. I guess I am the only one who watches them.

  14. QQ says:

In this predictable ass show if ya’ll didnt see that the designated “moral center” with barely any plot points of lines since at least half last season MIGHT be the one to bit it IDK what to tell ya LOLOL ive been telling you this since last season ended, it’ll be Glenn and Morgan this season IF they have the balls to follow through,.,…. which with with this show Is mad suspect!, but I also stopped caring a while back, ASlso on that Note, i’m happy to tell everyone that Steve Yeung is still happily alive with us all no need for the shiva that was being held in Talking dead and so on, cause you know, tv show about zombies

  15. Wallflower says:

I just hope Sasha or Michionne doesn’t die. I have a very special place in my heart for Sasha. She’s been through so much already by losing Bob and her brother. Then she blames herself for Tyler Williams’ character dying. Plus, Soqueena Martin Green is such a great actress.

    • Kori says:

She’s great. She was sidelined a bit by her pregnancy–though she didn’t get very large and the show did a good job camoflauging it during filming. (Hello Bob’s baggy jacket!) I think the actress is really stunning too–those cheekbones! And I thought she and Bob were so cute together–another wasted pairing. He flirted with her for so long before she reciprocated, a brief bit of happiness and *bam*. Then Tyrese. SMG and Ethan Embry (Carter) were villains together on Once Upon a Time, I was hoping their paths would cross on TWD but no such luck. I’d like to see more scenes with her and Gabriel (like in the finale last season), her and Maggie (they really bonded in the aftermath of the prison loss) and with Abraham (he’s as messed up as she was, hopefully she could help) but the show isn’t great with supporting characters–at least not until it’s time for one of them to die.

    • Mayamae says:

And Sasha’s hubby (IRL) is now on the show.

  16. emma says:

so if the driving guys pull by the RV, the hoard can follow them and Rick will just have to lay in wait. It’ll be hard for Rick because he’s used to action, but now he will just be waiting and eating baby food, maybe sawing off his hand.
