Jennifer Lawrence in Dior at the ‘Mockingjay 2’ premiere in Berlin: stunning?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence has been going for a more grown-up vibe lately in her interviews as she promotes Mockingjay – Part 2, so she did the same for her world premiere dress in Berlin. This plungy, plum-colored gown is Dior couture, and I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first. From the front, it’s nothing special, but when JLaw turns to the side, total glamour happens. How is that possible? The gown truly looks boring from a straight-on, forward perspective. The color of the dress, however, works so well with the red-carpet wallpaper and movie posters that decorated the venue.

This dress doesn’t even look like Raf Simons’ current designs at Dior, but he’s on the way out anyway. Jennifer is ushering in a new fashion mood for not only herself but also the fashion house. I would have preferred her hair loose, as the updo makes her look so mature, but that was probably the point.

Jennifer Lawrence

Elizabeth Banks never gets it wrong when it comes to the red carpet, and she went full-on fairytale with this exquisite Elie Saab gown. The dress looked beautiful from all angles and just as gorgeous from afar as it was up close. What do you think of the gold crown? Very risky and bold, and not everyone could pull this off, but Banks makes it shine.

Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks

Jena Malone wore a Reem Acra gown that looked like the budget version of what Elizabeth wore. This dress does pale in comparison, although there’s the same romantic, surreal vibe from both sets of fabric. They both tried to be futuristic, floating princesses, but Elizabeth had the superior dress.

Jena Malone

Natalie Dormer tried for the fashion-forward vibe, but it just didn’t suit my tastes. The pattern was so blocky and looked out of place on a red carpet. Maybe for an art gallery opening, this would have fit right in.

Natalie Dormer

Willow Shields wore a Marni gown that would have looked better in a more fun color. With the shades of brown, it looks pretty curtain-y and dated, especially on such a young lady.

I’m including photos of all the men in attendance. Donald Sutherland was bringing scarfy back. Sam Claflin looked exhausted, but Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth brought the energy. Here’s my boy, Stanley Tucci, for his final encore as Cesar Flickerman.

For once, I like Jens dress

    • Josephine says:

She doesn’t usually embrace the “I’m the star” dress, and this is definitely that. I think she looks great although I’m hoping for more quirky as the tour continues.

    • Suzy from Ontario says:

      It’s gorgeous. She looks incredible!

    • EN says:

It is “I am a peacock” dress, a really lovely peacock. Not many can pull it off. Most people would look “try hard” in this dress. But it is right on her.

    • Ravensdaughter says:

The color-a perfect aubergine. I want one!

      • belle de jour says:

Isn’t that color delicious? So rich and vibrant.
Wish the seaming had been better, though.

      • sunglasses Aready says:

Great dress, fab colour. But would have preferred if the dress was of a different material.

    • Mariah says:

The dress IS a typical Raf Simons: geometric attempt at destructuring, pitiful as the fitting and the seaming are tragic, as usual with him. The destructuring didn’t happen either. Two holes and bad connections fashion do not make even less couture. The time he leaves cannot come soon enough, the quality of Dior is badly missed!

  2. ISO says:

The plunging neckline isn’t for everyone….it’s really for very petite breasts, otherwise the chest line can age even a very young woman.

  3. Stunner says:

JenLaw is simply the most beautiful woman to ever walk on this planet. Good job, God. Take a bow.,

  4. Pixi says:

    I can’t see any shoes :'(

  5. Goats on the Roof says:

I don’t think Elizabeth is pulling off the gold crown at all. It almost makes her head look misshapen.

    • Hudson Girl says:

Yeah, I agree. But, I really like the idea of it and appreciate her risks.
Maybe it was a scale issue and something a bit smaller would have worked?

    • Franca says:

I have the complete opposite view of Elizabeth. To me she almost never looks good on the red carpet. She always looks out of place, like she would be more comfortable in jeans.

      • Bae says:

I actually love the dress, but I agree, the clothes wear her most of the time. Someone like Cate Blanchett would knock it out of the park in that dress, even with the crown. Elizabeth just look blah.

    • Ripley says:

It’s very Effie to me… Whimsical.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree, Goats. It looks like A bathing cap, if anyone remembers those. And I don’t like that dress, either.

    • belle de jour says:

Awful gold netting crown with that hairdo, awful 80s wallpaper dress. Don’t like the tacky gold snake belt or the gold chain straps, either. Fug.

      • Timbuktu says:

Agreed, I think the crown with that dress is too much. Dress already has a lot going on, and with the crown, the effect is almost comedic. A simple hairdo would have sufficed. And that crown would’ve looked better with a monochrome dress, IMO.

  6. India says:

Jennifer is just magnificent in this gown. Beautiful!!!!

  7. paolanqar says:

I keep nervously looking at her dress as though it’s about to slip off her body any minute.
I think it’s a terrible, terrible dress. Great color on her though.

    • vauvert says:

Agree. Gorgeous rich colour but the cut is horrible and no matter how you style satin it looks terrible on. Should have been a heavy silk, lose the sleeves and can we please for the love of all that is good, stop with the cut to the navel décolleté? We know you have breasts. We get it.

I do adore Elizabeth’s dress and I think the gold crown thingy is quite interesting. I would have worn it with loose curls, but it is different and dramatic and pretty.

    • Franca says:

      It’s awful
Her hair and makeup are beautiful, she really is a stunning girl, but the cut is awful, it makes her shoulders look very very broad and it isn’t tailored properly. Plus, satin always looks cheap.

After reading CB for some time, I have come to the conclusion that my view of style and beauty is compeltely opposite from the writers.

    • tracking says:

I agree. Divine color, but awful cut.

      • neutral says:

The cut would be fine if it didn’t seem to have been done by an amateur, on a dress that cost no doubt a small fortune the puckering at the seams is unforgivable. Apart from that it would be great – more than can be said for some of the others.

    • L says:

Color is perfection. But the sleeves are weird, and every single seam on the torso is puckering. It’s all I can see.

Loose the sleeves and get a better cut (and material, that satin just doesn’t work) and it would be great.

      • byland says:

Yes! It’s the terrible way the fabric is puckering that gets me. Please, ladies of Hollywood, if you’re going to wear satin make sure it’s going to lay flat against your body. The color is wonderful on her, but it would be just as wonderful in a silk jersey or crepe.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

I noticed the puckering right away too! I like the style of the dress, but satin seems a poor fabric choice, especially since it can be too shiny in the wrong lighting.

      • byland says:

@BearcatLawyer Thank you! So glad to see that I’m clearly not the only one to think the fabric choice was all wrong. Satin = no no 95% of the time, is one of the first fashion related memories I can remember my Mom imparting upon me. It’s really rare that satin works. I understand what Jennifer was going for here, and by and large it works, but the fabric – oh, my God.

  8. GlimmerBunny says:

I love all dresses except Willow’s, but especially Jena’s and Natalie’s.

My God I’m gonna be a mess when I watch the movie, THG was the last franchise I was a hardcore fan of and it had such a big impact on my life (the first one was the first film I reviewed as a professional movie critic, so it literally started my career.) I’m not ready to say Game Over just yet 🙁

    • byland says:

I must be in the minority with you, GlimmerBunny, because I think Natalie is knocking it out of the park with this one as well. She’s in so many period pieces it seems, that I just love seeing her in modern styles and this dress is good in so many ways. I’d maybe prefer the block color of the skirt to be in a navy or a forest green (to offset the purple of the sleeves) instead of black, but it’s still just beautiful on her. Not too overdone, but not at all too casual either. Just gorgeous – not unlike her lovely, lovely face. I adore an actress who is not afraid of Resting Bitch Face.

      • belle de jour says:

“…this dress is good in so many ways. I’d maybe prefer the block color of the skirt to be in a navy or a forest green…”
This, exactly. But love this dress on her.

On the other hand: poor Willow. Yikes.

    • phlyfiremama says:

I agree with you!! I think Jena & Natalie by far have the coolest dresses~both look outstanding!!!

  9. Lindy says:

I like both Elizabeth and Jena Malone here but I think I like Malone’s dress even better than Elizabeth’s! They’re both definitely going for a similar look but I think both dresses are stunning. And JLaw rocks that aubergine color.

  10. SloaneY says:

I abhor all the women’s dresses. Complete yuck. The men looked terrific, though, especially Tucci.

  11. Lilacflowers says:

May I just say that Donald Sutherland is one super hot octogenarian?

  12. lower-case deb says:

    Elizabeth’s dress! WOW!
i like the depth and the layers of swirls going on the surface and the lining underneath. it was hypnotic a bit. i was staring at it trying to figure out what where …

  13. als says:

JLaw’s dress looks stunning from the side because she is very beautiful with a perfect body, otherwise, the dress is not that great and it has a horrible material.
I love Banks’ crown, I would wear it daily without being ashamed. It so cool!

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Agree. The only reason it looks so stunning from the side is bc of her posture and figure. She was coached on how to pose in that dress and it paid off.

  14. JudyK says:

    Jennifer Lawrence stunning…yes!

  15. Grace says:

Hollywood Reporter wrote that JLaw has new stylists. Good news! Yesterday she was gorgeous, a real movie star

  16. Lk says:

I swear that first photo is like magic. Stunning.

    • Shambles says:

My jaw hit the floor. That, right there, is a movie star. Absolutely magnificent.

      • Kitten says:

        Me too…..

        …and then I scrolled down.

I like the cut and color but I cannot with the satin. It always creates this boxy/bulky effect even on women with bangin bodies like J Law.

Conclusion: I like it..not sure I love it though.

  17. Tig says:

Totally agree- dress is much better from that side angle that the front view. The color is great on her, and also liked the fact that it picked up colors from the poster. If new stylist account is true, well done Team New!!

Can’t say I agree with assessment of E Banks’ and Malone’s gowns- way too much going on with both.

  18. astrid says:

Jennifer is stunning, the other women not so much. And the crown – no.

  19. lucy2 says:

I like Jen’s except for the sleeves. Her body is ridiculous!
I like Elizabeth’s except for what appears to be a sheer window right in to her underwear.
    The rest…no.

  20. missmerry says:

lawrence looks nice…but also looks 50.

NOT THAT 50 IS BAD TO BE PEOPLE!
it’s just that she’s not 50 yet, so that first picture of her shocked me a tad. but the color does work so well with the background. I hope they did all that on purpose.

    malone bores me. always.
    banks impresses me. always.

    • Brittney B. says:

I appreciate the clarification that 50 isn’t an insult… but honestly, I don’t see how you could get that impression from these pictures at ALL. Every pixel of that first picture is perfect and bold and youthful.

    • SloaneY says:

I feel the same way. Maybe not 50. Possibly 40 though. I thought she’s finally looking the age of the characters she portrays.

  21. jess1632 says:

Idk may get some flack but jlaws dress looks dated to me and doesn’t do her any favours….but Elizabeth banks loooks good!

  22. Probably a dumb question says:

I actually like the Natalie Dormer dress but I agree, something about it is a little informal. Anyway I am dying to know what that lip color is because that is stunning. This is probably a dumb question but does any one know of a color that might look similar on someone who has coloring like hers?

    • HH says:

I like her dress as well, but I don’t think it’s too informal. I just think it doesn’t work well wit her coloring. It would have looked better on someone with darker skin tones. Anywhere from caramel to darker brown. Such as Zoe Saldana and Lupita Nyongo. As far as Natalie goes, I think blues would work well with her skin tone.

  23. InvaderTak says:

I just wish it was sewn better. It puckers a little.

  24. Naddie says:

I think I’m the only one who really loved the Elizabeth’s crown. And what beautiful eyes she has!
Jennifer looks perfect in that dress, but in a closer look, the magic goes away. But it’s totally the dress’s fault, not hers at all.
Willow’s face looks like mine when I have to dress up for a wedding party, lol.
    Stanley Tucci is flawless.

  25. Carmen says:

I like Banks’s dress. JLaw’s dress doesn’t seem to fit her right.

  26. It'sJustBlanche says:

She looks beautiful and yay, her boobs are real! How often does that happen these days?

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I wonder what the general consensus was on her boobs being smashed down but I guess everyone is just happy they aren’t popping out so they dont care.

  27. Brittney B. says:

WHOA. I think this is my favorite look so far from Jennifer… neck-in-neck with the red Calvin Klein, anyway. I wasn’t expecting sleeves, but I love them! The lines are absolutely perfect, as is the color. Fall/winter fashion is the best, especially when it incorporates a warm color scheme. You’re right though… the promo art is what makes it pop. That first picture is like cotton candy for my eyes.

The bottom of Jena’s dress is great too. I actually don’t like Elizabeth’s dress at all, and she’s my favorite of the actresses… never would’ve guessed it would be a hit. Does anyone else think darker hair would’ve contrasted with the crown a lot better? It looks like a swimming cap at first because her blonde hair blends right in.

  28. Mar says:

    Jena’s dress is amazing

  29. Jaded says:

I love Natalie Dormer’s dress but have always been a fan of geometric patterns and blocks of colour – it seems to really suit her personality and “look”.

  30. Loulou says:

Banks’ and Malone’s dresses are awesome!!

  31. Margot says:

Stunnnnnning but i find her really thin lately!

  32. Merritt says:

I would like Jen’s dress better without the sleeves. The sleeves seem like an afterthought.

  33. EN says:

Jena Malone is my fave, that woman has a spark. Natalie Dormer too, though I don’t like her look here.
I like Jennifer’s and Jena’s dresses but I don’t like the split to the navel style. It is overdone.

  34. NUTBALLS says:

    Banks and Tucci FTW!

    • Kitten says:

I love Banks, even with her crazy head ornament thingum. She always brings something interesting/whimsical to the red carpet, even if it’s not always successful.

      Tucci looks sexy here.

  35. Fluff says:

If I didn’t know who it was, I’d swear the photo was from a runway show. All the cast look amazing.

  36. Mltpsych says:

Jlaw’s dress is horrible. Michael K. Had some pics that show it more from the front and it fits her terribly, way long and gives her a big belly from the puckering. Seriously looks like something my 10 year old would sew.

    • Korra says:

The color is really bold and works for her. From far away it’s noteworthy but then you see it close and….no. It just does not work. Her makeup and earrings are great though.

  37. Jag says:

The color is gorgeous on her! I love her hair and makeup, too. I’d rather she not smile, though, if she’s going to give such a fake one.

I just wish that the stitching were better on the dress because it makes it look cheap, and that’s not a cheap dress.

The rest were “eh” to me.

  38. SwanLake says:

The only dress I liked was Jennifer’s. Elizabeth’s look was a total NO for me. Donald Sutherland looks great.

  39. Margot says:

Jlaw’s look is such an improvement compare to the crap from dior she used to wear. They all look good imo.

  40. Chinoiserie says:

Jena’s dress looks fun and better than Elizabeth’s in my opinion, the gold details and the crown did not quite fit to her dress and her. Jennifer looks great even if I think no sleeves and less cleavage would have worked a bit better.

  41. Fallon says:

I actually love every single one of these dresses! The ladies clearly had fun with choosing and Stanley Tucci, as always, looks fantastic.

  42. WinnieCoopersMom says:

Jenna Malone needs some styling help…Not just with her dress

  43. lila fowler says:

She has grown out of her baby face. Just gorgeous.

  44. Sarah01 says:

I love Jena’s dress the best, the fit is perfect. Jlaw’s dress is ill fitting. Natalie’s dress looks good awesome on her, she has such a beautiful and striking look.

  45. themummy says:

Why isn’t anyone bashing JLaw for her eyeliner? It looks heavier than K. Middleton’s any day here!!

  46. Grant says:

Elizabeth Banks has definitely had some red carpet blunders, and this is one of them. I think that dress is hideous.

JLaw, on the other hand, looks sublime.

  47. maggie says:

    So beautiful!

  48. Sam says:

I’m not sure why the shrug was necessary (maybe it was chilly there?) and it looks a little silly but my overall impression is that her body is insane and she looks amazing.
