Seth Rogen apologizes to Justin Bieber: I said ‘mean things for no real reason’

WebMD Health Hero Awards at the Times Center in NYC.
In the spring of 2014, Seth Rogen tweeted a bunch of smack about Justin Bieber a couple of months after Bieber’s DUI arrest. It was funny and true, because Bieber makes himself a target by acting like a little douche. Rogen deleted that tweet, but he later clarified, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, that he thought Bieber was “a piece of sh-t. He seems like he’s obnoxious and ungrateful, insincere, and he puts people’s lives at danger and overall he acts like a piece of sh-t.” He wasn’t wrong. Bieber had egged his neighbors house at that point, was generally wreaking havoc in his neighborhood, and was involved in several high speed car chases with the paparazzi. There were so many more incidents with Bieber that we just don’t have the patience or time to recap.

Later, Rogen told Howard Stern that he had met Beiber a couple of times but that he got a bad impression both times. He thought “He’s a bit of a motherf-er” and “f this kid.” (That’s really what he said.) For his part Bieber took the high road, or his people did, with a simple tweet dismissing Rogen’s version of meeting Bieber. Bieber tweeted “Seth Rogan sorry I didnt bow down when I asked 2 meet u was probably a bit shy and didn’t want to be over the top but still. love ur movies.” Touché

All of that is apparently water under the bridge though, because Seth met up with Justin on Ellen DeGeneres’s show yesterday, where they’re having their first ever “Bieber Week.” (WTF I know.) Bieber announced that he’s going to tour for his new album, Purpose, because of course he is. He also got an apology from Seth Rogen, who is promoting his movie The Night Before. You get the impression that Rogen was told if he wanted to go on Ellen he’d have to make nice with Bieber.

When Rogen sat down on Ellen’s couch she brought up the Bieber thing right away. He seemed prepared for it and rattled off the following.

Rogen: We had a beef. It’s not really a beef, I just called him some mean things on social media for no real reason. And I’d only met him very briefly. I can’t tell you why I did it, I was inclined to do it at that moment, and then I did it.

Then it really hurt his feelings – as it should have – and a lot of people got very mad at me and all this time I’d only met him once, very briefly, and it was honestly a very pleasant interaction and I finally saw him today in the hallway of your show and I guess we made up, which is fantastic. It’s all my fault, it’s all because I decided to be mean one day for no reason whatsoever. In light of recent photos, I want him on my side.

[From the Ellen DeGeneres show, aired November 11, 2015]

Ok, well Rogen said on Stern that he met Bieber twice, not just once, and he was very specific about how Bieber seemed like an asshole. He also had a good reason for talking smack about Bieber, not only on social media but in a follow-up interview, because Bieber had just been arrested for a DUI after months of bad behavior. Rogen is trying to make nice but he’s basically fibbing and I believe he knows this. He was over the top about it because he wanted people to call him on it.

After some small talk about Rogen’s new movie, which co-stars Joseph Gordon Levitt and Anthony Mackie and which I’m totally going to see (here’s a link to the red band trailer), Bieber came out in a comically oversized Seth Rogen mask/head. They hugged and then it was time for Bieber’s daily interview. I don’t know, I just came away from this feeling sorry for Seth Rogen. He came on to promote his movie and he had to lie about why he dissed Bieber and how unpleasant it was to meet him. He laid it on thick enough that you could tell his heart wasn’t in it though.

Here’s Rogen’s full interview. Bieber comes on at the end.

    Ugh.

The terrori- whoops, I mean Bieber, has won.

    How could you Seth? Sigh.

Bleh = Ellen. I believe she did make him do that. She is the ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ of talk show hosts. She loves everybody and loathes no one.

  2. Div says:

I dislike Bieber but I thought Rogen was way out of line to repeatedly trash him like that. It’s one thing to call him an entitled little shit once, another to rant multiple times. Seth also has a habit of kicking people when they are already down in Twitter.

    • Elle says:

Yeah same, I’m not a fan of Bieber, he does come across like an entitled little shit IMO.

But then what do people really expect? At what sixteen he has this mega hit, becomes super rich, famous and seems to have pretty negligent parents, like many child stars. I really do not envy that life.

And I thought Rogen taking a shot at him on twitter was just cheap. Unless you are a teenage girl (and even then) to me taking a shot at Bieber is just an easy joke. It’s lazy and a crowd pleaser.

      • Denise says:

I kind of saw it as a Canadian dude calling out one of his own for bad behaviour. Probably because I’m Canadian too and I always see his douchey ways as a bad reflection.

  3. Talie says:

Why does Ellen feel like she has to take up the cause of Beiber. He doesn’t deserve her kindness.

  4. astrid says:

I’m a little disappointed with Seth. I agreed with his earlier tweets and comments about Biebs, and then to have to take it back to promote a movie

    • Froggy says:

Same. There was reason enough for me to agree with him.
I think Seth said it around JB’s pee in the janitor bucket ‘phase’?

    • Cindy Carp says:

Me too. Why? I can’t even watch the clip because I am cringing for Seth. I am also developing a strong dislike for Ellen. The niceness seems forced and just too much. She is such a good host, and so funny. Why can’t she just leave it at that and stop with the too saccharin celebrity worship stuff. And for Justin Bieber? I don’t get it.

      • Tate says:

I used to watch the Ellen show every day. I can’t put my finger on it but somewhere along the line something changed and I started watching less and less to the point that I haven’t watched it at all in a couple of years. To see this crap with Bieber makes me glad I stopped watching.

    • Amanda G says:

I agree, I lost some respect for Seth.

  5. Nancy says:

Social Media…the ultimate way to blow off steam and then regret it. He should have apologized in private Imo. When I was little and angry with someone, my mom said to write a letter venting all my feelings, then rip it up. Justin does bring out the worst in people over thirty, but then again, so do the Kardashians. Maybe that’s why they’re friends. Birds of a feather so to speak.

  6. Lilacflowers says:

What’s next? Will Rogen now invite Kim Jong-un to Thanksgiving dinner?

  7. lisa2 says:

I think he is feeling the backlash and it maybe affecting his work or BO. But don’t say stuff if you can’t stand by it. It is not like he was misinterpreted. That happens; especially when the media wants to create some drama. But that was not the case in this instance. I think celebrities should just STOP talking about each other.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Not sure it would affect his box office. He does insult comedy and his audience isn’t likely the same as Bieber’s

  8. Zigggy says:

I’m so over Ellen & her show.

  9. missmerry says:

ugh, why is he even on the Ellen show to promote that kind of movie?
are Ellen watchers also his movie demographic? that seems weird to me.

  10. My two cents says:

For some reason, I tend to give Biebs a pass on some of this media driven ruin Beiber campaign. He’s still just a kid that got thrown into a money hungry adult world. Sure he did some stupid stuff, but what kid doesn’t? I would hate to be judged today for what I did at 15-20 years of age.

    • Jonescrusher says:

Me, too. He egged a house? The horror.

    • Alex says:

Same. I always said this about any of the Disney kids or the young teens growing up in the spotlight. Its hard being a teen. Being one with millions of eyes on you? I wouldn’t have made it honestly. Not that I did anything serious but I went through an “i hate my parents phase”, “an all black everything sucks phase”, a “party every day roll out of bed for class the next phase”, etc. I couldn’t IMAGINE what the tabs would say about that.

Point is Seth Rogen is an adult and going after JB accomplished what exactly?

    • AJ says:

The flight attendant who had to hide in the cockpit of the private plane because of the aggression and harassment of JB and his entourage? The model drugged by a member of his entourage? These are not petty offenses.

  11. J says:

Why does Ellen have to give every jackass celebrity a free pass? She is the first place they go to apologize for being awful, and she just lets them… And when Justin f*&^s up again, she will have him back to say sorry again.

  12. original kay says:

This just furthers Justin’s cause that he is a victim. How unfortunate.
While I don’t agree with name calling, sometimes a shock is needed to snap someone out of self destructive behaviour, not to mention actual destruction of other people’s property.

    Justified Justin.

  13. Katie says:

I kind of feel like Hollywood is descending into high school mean girl drama. These are grown people acting like 15 year olds!

  14. lithe says:

I just wish Justin would surround himself with people capable of providing better guidance than he has received from his father.

  15. gogirl says:

This apology is hilariously insincere. ‘In light of recent pictures, I want him on my side.’ Way to play it, Seth. Eff that guy.

  16. elle says:

I don’t feel sorry for Seth. He’s a smug f*cker, so I’m glad to see him eat crow.

  17. Nikki says:

We are talking about a young man who has peed in a bucket someone ELSE had to clean up, said incredibly rude, sexist things to fans, and yet if someone “hurt his feelings terribly” we are supposed to feel sorry for him? One or even 2 douche incidents, maybe, but he has proven he has little regard for anyone’s feelings but his own. Having an older guy call him out for his behavior should have made Bieber apologize, not Seth. And Bieber’s response was not a “touché” in my book; to me it came across as whiny and sorry for himself. Ick.
