Prince Harry: ‘I’m much cooler than my older brother… and he knows it.’

145534PCN_Harry22

Here are some photos of Prince Harry during his tour of South Africa – I covered some other photos yesterday. Harry’s tour has been massively successful so far, I think. He hasn’t made any gaffes and he’s gotten to hang around kids and do a lot of appearances for charities, youth centers, community projects, organizations and groups close to his heart. And yes, I chose a few photos where Harry looks “naughty.” He just has that look sometimes – like he’ll always be the naughty bad boy with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar. Harry knows that about himself too. While at a Cape Town youth center yesterday, Harry told some of the troubled youths that he too wanted to be a “bad boy” at school.

Harry has always had a reputation for—as many a younger sibling does—going about things his own way, let’s say. While his days of frequent partying may have now given way to a (seemingly) more stayed existence, the 31-year-old still manages to “rebel” (by royal standards) in ways brother William cannot, by growing a beard or finding himself ensconced in all kinds of romantic travails.

Harry reflected a bit on his relative position to William in South Africa on Monday, discussing his wild-child past. Meeting with a group of children at a youth center, he explained: “I didn’t enjoy school at all. I would like to have come to a place like this. When I was at school, I wanted to be the bad boy.”

(Amusingly, the boys in attendance had no idea who their famous visitor was. When a professor involved in running the center asked them if they knew who Harry was, they responded with “blank faces,” to which Harry joked, “That’s the right answer!”)

Harry reportedly listened to stories from members of the group, and also, while discussing alternatives to gang culture, managed to touch on how he sees himself in comparison to William.

“If you’ve got an older brother that’s not into gangs, that’s a huge positive,” he told the group. “Older brothers are supposedly the cool ones. I’m a younger brother but I’m much cooler than my older brother.” When told by the professor that William would not be notified of this comment, Harry just laughed, remarking, “He knows it!”

[From Vanity Fair & People]

Um, yes. Harry IS the cooler brother. And William knows it. And William will never stop throwing Harry under the bus, mark my words. A decade ago, I’m not sure if any of us would predicted how everything panned out with William and Harry. That William would be so sulky, petty and low-energy and Harry would be the “bad boy” with the heart of gold. Sigh… I wonder how William will get back at Harry for this swipe?

Not a hard task though, is it?

  2. Shambles says:

    No lies detected here.

    • Snazzy says:

Nope. Plus, it really seems to me like Harry is just a better person. I base that on nothing substantial of course, but considering what he does with his role and title compared to his lazy-ass brother says so much about him as a person.

      • Jib says:

I agree! Harry seems to be a much more giving and selfless person. William seems like he can’t even get out of himself.

  3. tracking says:

    LOL

  4. TheSageM says:

Cool people don’t have to say that they’re cool.

    • Em' says:

Well he didn’t say he was cool. He said he was cooler than William… pretty much the whole world he’s cooler than William.
Hell, his grand mother is cooler than William

      • michelleb says:

LOL. His grandmother is cooler than a lot of people.

I will say that even my grandma is cooler than William and that is saying a lot. Love my Nanna, but she makes the grandma from Everybody Loves Raymond look cool.

      • vava says:

        lolol

      • LadyMTL says:

Heck, I’m sure the Queen’s corgis look at William and think “yep, cooler than him.” LOL. William seems to have gotten a lot stodgier as he’s gotten older, IMHO.

    • Em' says:

Edit : the whole world is cooler than William
Sorry the lack of “coolitude” in William is even hurting my grammar.
That or I was to focus on HPG’ hotness….

  5. Lama Bean says:

Glad to see he knows what we figured out years ago. William seems like a soggy piece of bread.

    LOVE HARRY.

And he wears a pair of jeans really well.

  6. Bettyrose says:

That is one firm belly. Sorry, what was the topic?

    • Chrissy says:

      LOL!

      There was a topic?

    • Crumpet says:

That’s the area my eyes are always drawn to. Well… the second. *blush*

      • kri says:

Oh I thought I was the only one. Good lord, I find him so hot. And cool. Get away hounds!! He’s miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine!!

    • Size Does Matter says:

You guys made me go back and look! Bad influences (shakes finger)!

Harry just seems so much more engaging. William seems … cold. I guess Harry has his mom’s personality and William has his dad’s.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Charles seems to have mellowed with age – and he definitely comes across better than William these days. He seemed warm and funny at his and Camilla’s South American tour.

William seems to have inherited his grand-father’s sense of humour. Unfunny and borderline offensive.

      • Betti says:

Charles problem is that he struggled to engage as he tried too hard – he’s gotten better with age as he has relaxed and is himself. Plus i think he was just plain awkward and insecure. Willy is insecure and awkward but does NOT want to engage with people – whereas with Chuck and Harry they want to.

      • Miffy says:

My personal take is that the princes interpreted their mom’s legacy very differently. Harry took her warmth, compassion and humanitarian side and William focused on the media’s intrusion that ultimately caused her death hence the cold, unfriendly, begrudging public persona.

I feel for William in that regard. I read Diana’s biography and she told a story of how when William was very small he said he wanted to be a policeman to protect her from photographers to which Harry replied ‘But kings can’t be policemen.’ I think a lot of his current attitude was shaped by moments like that.

      • FLORC says:

But Charles is extremely engaging and with quick wit. There’s an image that has lingered of how he was when with Diana. And not many could hold their own next to her. And for a time he was more awkward, but with time as others have pointed out he’s improved. Greatly imo.

There’s simply too many instances where he’s shined in all forms of conversations and public situations. IMO William could get there, but he has to put in the effort.
Harry has this naturally it appears or he’s worked heavily behind the scenes to improve these skills.

    • Reece says:

      Forearms!

  7. M.A.F. says:

I doubt William could grow a beard even if he wanted to.

  8. anniefannie says:

I had to fan myself when looking at that top pick . Ginger is packing!!

  9. The Original Mia says:

That blue jumper of Wills tells us everything we need to know about his personality. Harry is having a great tour. So many visits with at risk kids. It’s great to see genuine concern and joy for those kids. He’s doing the Firm proud.

  10. Karen says:

**I wonder how William will get back at Harry for this swipe?**

Considering William released the photos of Charlotte while Harry was on his solo tour, I think William struck first.

William’s family will not be overshadowed.

    • anne_000 says:

      +1

Call me a cynical jerk, but since there’s loads of photos in the press of Harry with children happy to be in his company, cue the next appearance of new photos of George & Charlotte…

    • FLORC says:

Considering Harry was already out and about working I think the timing is total coincidence. More likely WK are on a quick holiday since the baby photos were weeks old sitting on a release date.

And imo it’s not William tossing Harry under the bus, but generations old PR strategy where it’s understood by all parties the spare will be belittled and the heir protected. Maybe if William outright countered directly those negative spare stories and admitted his faults completely this could be stopped. It appears as a case of tradition. A tradition I think William is perfectly comfortable keeping.

  11. India says:

Oh Yes, there will be major GET BACK by The Duke of Dork against Precious Harry for this. And The Viper will be right in there with him. She’s sharpening her claws as we speak.

  12. snusnu says:

    That buldge! ♥ ___ ♥

    Edit: ♥ ___________________________________ ♥

    • Pinky says:

I thought it was just something in his pocket, but then…O__o

It would work quite well even if it doesn’t, ahem, inflate!

  13. vava says:

He seems to have more fun, so I’d rather hang out with him than his grumpy older brother. 🙂

  14. Jaded says:

William was, is and always will be a whiny, self-pitying little nerd so yes, Harry wins the coolness contest by a country mile. I wish I could grab His Nibs by the lapels and shout “will you just get on with it you silly little wanker!!!”

  15. Christin says:

How will big brother get back at him? Harry is way behind, I think.

    • anne_000 says:

I disagree that Harry is way behind. I think he has a better image in the public than William does. And I also think that William is not the kind of big brother that can let Harry have his day in the sun without getting all twitchy.

      • Betti says:

Willy will never let Harry shine particularly when it makes him and his wife look bad. I also think that this trick the Buckets have of trotting out photo’s of the kids is old – no one really cared. The 2nd article about Charlotte and who she looks like in the Fail was buried away, they gave more attention to Harry and his fall/SA visit. That will not please Normal Bill.

Its just sad, childish and nasty.

      • anne_000 says:

        @ Betti

I agree. The purpose of releasing Charlotte’s photos at this time seems so suspicious to those who know something of the family politics between William and Harry.

Imo, William might be thinking that everything that has to do with him, Kate, and the kids are like catnip to the press and public. Is that why he used his kids for that meeting with members of the press recently?

But there’s only so much of an effect a couple of baby photos can make in comparison to all the photos and articles that Harry has garnered through his recent working tour.

  16. Bella says:

Did I miss what William does to get back at Harry? Does he actually do anything, or does he just look sulky in pictures? I don’t really know anything about his personality.

  17. Misti64 says:

Minority report – I like William and Harry. They both have good & bad.
I don’t agree with the evil William vs. saintly Harry narrative.
Never have. A story repeating itself as far back as Prince David vs Prince Albert, Fergie vs Diana e.t.c
Until some biography, brings new insight and fewer blinkers down the years. As always happens.

  18. Livvers says:

It’s William’s lack of charisma, his over-seriousness, his inability to connect with the common folk (even as he role-plays as hard as Marie Antoinette), that makes any comparison to Harry unfavourable, even if Harry were a sketchy asshole who never learned from his early 20s douche moves (see: Charles vs. Andrew). William could be the most boring, stupid fool and that wouldn’t matter to me at all if he was at least responsible and kind.

  19. Miss M says:

True story hot ginger Prince, true story…

  20. R says:

    Love Harry!

  21. Eleonor says:

    True !
And Diana knew that,I remember once she said (thanks mum) about him: “he is like me, he is a bad boy”. Actually he inherited her charisma and work ethic.

  22. sauvage says:

    EVERYBODY knows it, Harry.

  23. Lucy says:

Bad boy with a heart of gold indeed!!!

  24. feebee says:

    WORD.

  25. Jess says:

I miss your ginger hair and the way you used to dress

    • Citresse says:

The texture changed, yeah for sure. And Harry looks better when he keeps the hair and beard better groomed (trimmed).
