Alicia Vikander & Michael Fassbender didn’t walk the PSIFF carpet together

wenn23316394

Well, there’s some good news/bad news, depending on where you fall on the fandom scales of Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. Fassy and Vikander were both at the big Palm Springs International Film Festival gala this weekend, as they were both given awards (Fassy won the International Star Award, Vikander won the Rising Star Award). They did not walk the carpet together, nor did they pose together for any photos inside the event. They are often referred to as an “on-and-off couple,” mostly because there have been tons of breakup rumors but Vikander seems to want everyone to believe that everything is going swimmingly. The last we heard, Vikander was “telling pals” that she planned on taking a vacation with Fassbender over the holidays. Did that happen? I have no idea. But I do know that HE really does not want to be photographed with her.

As for the fashion, there was some good news… Alicia is finally wearing something other than Louis Vuitton!! Vikander was the LV brand ambassador for 2015, and I guess she’s now free to wear other designers in the new year. So she chose this girlish Erdem in pink. I like it, although I think it looks more like an Easter dress than something that you would see on the red carpet of a major film festival. I think I might like it because I was just sick of seeing her in Louis Vuitton.

Both Alicia and Michael are nominated for Golden Globes (Alicia has two noms, actually) and they’ll likely both appear at the Globes next Sunday. Will they sit together? Will they arrive together? Will they be photographed together? Who knows? If they are together and they just don’t want to be photographed together, how long can they keep this up throughout the awards season? Incidentally, their film – The Light Between Oceans – still doesn’t have a release date. It was supposed to come out in December, but now… who knows?

why are we assuming that she wants everyone to believe they’re going swimmingly, as opposed to being the actual truth? they’re certainly not the first couple not to pose together on the red carpet. fgs, there are actual married couples who refuse to do so. i really don’t get the vitriol over these two being together.

    • wow says:

@Ell I agree. I thinks it’s just a case of speculation which is done with most celeb couples. Sometimes it’s easier for people to believe couples are having troubles as oppose to them being happy. I’m not sure if that’s the case with this couple but I mean “in general”.

    • tracking says:

co-sign. And they might have some philosophical differences about it, eg she’ll answer questions simply when asked, he won’t. Either position is valid.

    • Fluff says:

She’s female, and therefore by default a thirsty man-hungry desperate famewhore, and the needy one in any relationship.

      • Peach says:

Exactly Fluff! HW and the media are still so sexist. She always gets asked about him and is referenced as his gf, never vice versa. She is viewed (positively or negatively) through the prism of Fassbender. It’s sad because she is a talent in her right and garnering awards and nominations all over the place based on that talent. It’s been happening to women since the era of silent film.

      • CornyBlue says:

Yes. And Fassbender is this huge huge star riding whose dick she is going to enter Hollywood.

    • Alex says:

      +1
And obviously the desperation is on her end because she’s female. So automatically she can’t win in the press

    • Fluff says:

David Tennant and his wife go out of their way to avoid being seen together (not only never done a red carpet, but entering and leaving events separately, and walking down the street a distance apart), and they’ve been happily married for four years and have had three babies during that time!

  2. Liz says:

She had to Share to Pete Hammond that she came With Michael Fassbender: “Vikander told us she and Fassbender wrote their acceptance speeches while playing Yahtzee on the plane ride into the desert”

    • Renee says:

      But she’s not a thirsty name-dropper.

      • SusanneToo says:

I don’t think he’s that big a name. If I stopped 50 people on the street I doubt more than 3 would be able to id him. She’s on nearly the same level as he and he’s been around much longer.

  3. Esmom says:

I think she looks lovely although the pink is a big spring-y for January, regardless of climate. It’s a pretty dress.

  4. Cee says:

I finally saw The Danish Girl and she was good in it. We’ll see what her chances are when the Academy nominees are announced. Eddie Redmayne, however, was VERY good. He’s on a roll.

I still think Alicia’s performance in Ex Machina was better.

    • Andrea says:

I saw it too and I wasn’t blown away by her performance. In fact, she was crying throughout a lot of it and didn’t bring depth to the character imo.

    • layla says:

She was fantastic in Ex Machina. Phenomenal movie all round.

    • daphne says:

Vikander was the sole saving grace of the film imo.I felt like she was the only three-dimensional character. I hated Redmayne in this.

      • Nik says:

        @ Daphne

Agreed. Alicia was the only redeemable thing about DG. I couldn’t stand Eddie, he was insufferable.

    • moon says:

She was okay, but Eddie was awful….and I usually like him. But I found the whole movie a sob fest.

  5. Pies says:

Don’t think they took that vacation together, I saw Vikander celebrating Christmas in Gothenburg

    • H says:

Fassbender was in Ireland seeing his family over the holidays. So yeah, that source saying they would “vacation together” isn’t a good source.

  6. Ally8 says:

I wonder whether Erdem has been stung by recent criticisms about reliance on floral motifs, terrific and modern as they were in the designs. This dress seems a bit of a scramble for alternate patterns… as you said, not particularly well suited to the season or a red backdrop.

I’m on Team Vikander here, unlike many Celebitchy commenters, in that I think that she’s lovely and understated, and a remarkably expressive actress for such a conventionally pretty woman (defying the idea that some actresses are “too beautiful” for good roles; capable actresses aren’t), and thereby possibly too good for him. Fassbender always struck me as a vicious, cold fish. But then his unabashed delight with Julie Walters on that recent Graham Norton episode kind of won me over, in that he seemed so taken with an amusing, interesting older woman he didn’t previously know, rather than acting haughty or bored as one might have expected.

    • Fassbender Fans says:

The many Celebitchy commenters who don’t like her are all Fassloonies who can’t handle that he has a gf because it kills their fantasy. They won’t like the next gf any better. Look at poor Cumberbatches wife and what she has to put up with from his loony fans.

      • Kiki says:

I am sick of people saying that Alicia is not liked by Fassbender fans as a fantasy. I am a Fassy fan and I don’t care who he dates. But the main reason I don’t like Vikander is because she was a snob and cold. But she has become very subtle in her interviews and I am beginning to like her a little bit.

      • Tandy says:

Her only fans ARE Fassbender fans, sooo…

      • SusanneToo says:

Don’t agree Tandy. I’ve never gone to see a movie because MF is in it, whereas I will go see a movie just because AV is in it. I really like her. As for their relationship or not, nobody’s business.

      • Minxx says:

I’m sorry but don’t make too many assumptions. I dont like her because she’s a carefully managed creation – there is nothing authentic about her. I’m not sure she has any character or personality. She’s too eager for recognition, just an empty shell adjusting to everyone’s expectations, even her English accent changes depending on circumstances. She has some talent, but no charisma and she’s IMO, completely bland onscreen. I have no idea why she’s so hyped, it’s a mystery to me.
I had similar dislike for Reese Witherspoon when she was promoted as “America’s sweetheart”.. and everyone was fawning over her. Never liked her, always thought she’s not a “girl next door” but a massive b** and a phoney. Guess what? It appears that I was right LOL. So let me just express my apprehension re Miss Vikander. Something is off, people. Definitely what you see is not what you get.
Oh, and I predict that she’ll get two Oscar noms this year and win for ExMachina. Then she’ll disappear in 2-3 years.

      • Andrea says:

I feel the same regarding Reese Witherspoon. She is NOT america’s sweetheart. More like embarassment after that whole cop thing.

    • Rum Tum says:

Actually, Fassbender comes across as the opposite of a “vicious, cold fish” in interviews, I think. If anything, that Graham Norton with Julie Walters was a rather subdued turn for him. Could you be confusing him with the characters he’s played, or is it something else?

As for Vikander, I actually love her understated style at these events. She could really glam it up, but she doesn’t. I’m really quite puzzled by all the hate.

      • Farhi says:

He comes across as emotionally unavailable. I too think Alicia is too good for him,
If I met Fassy in real life I’d run in the opposite direction quickly,
Having said that, all impressions and opinions are personal and are based on our personal life experiences.

  7. Locke Lamora says:

She’s so pretty, but always looks so dull on the red carpet. She should change her stylist, and hairstylist and makeup artist.

I saw The Danish Girl, wasn’t impressed with her, to be honest.

  8. Greenieweenie says:

She’s so pretty. Saw her in two movies recently.

  9. Neelyo says:

She’s like the second coming of Julia Ormond. Nice, attractive and probably talented, but absolutely no star quality no matter how hard they foist her on the public.

    • mia girl says:

Yes, maybe… But I loved Ormond in the Sabrina remake.

      • Ally8 says:

Oy vey, I so wanted to love that movie. As you can see from my Fordpedia knowledge below, I was primed to love Harrison Ford as Linus Larrabee, but the changes they made to the story simply didn’t improve it. Instead, it was a memorable cringefest. To my mind, Dana Ivey and her character’s (as Linus’s assistant Mack) lines were the only part I now feel is lacking in the original…

When arranging a night out for the office-bound tycoon Linus:

Mack: The most difficult tickets [to get] will be for a Broadway musical.
        Linus: Okay.
Mack: That means that the actors periodically will dance about and burst into song.

Or later, when she helps pack his suitcase for (spoiler) an elopement:

Mack: We were up to our elbows in your underwear drawer. It was like touching the Shroud of Turin.

      • mia girl says:

Ally8 – Both Dana Ivey and Nancy Marchand (as Mama Larrabee) were standouts for me, especially on repeat viewing.

The remake is definitely not perfect (and as much as I love the original – neither is it – Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn had little chemistry IMO – but that black and white dress – sigh… and William Holden was so charismatic).

But even with the cringe-worthy moments, there is something I find charming about the remake. Maybe its the Sidney Pollack sensibility, Ormond was charming (though no Hepburn) and I love Ford as well.

    • Ally8 says:

Re: Vikander, no star quality on the red carpet, maybe, but terrific onscreen, imo.

It reminds me of this great Harrison Ford anecdote, when he was criticized by the head of the New Talent program at the studio for not having star quality during his brief 30 seconds of screen time in a 1966 movie at the very start of his acting career. Ford’s retelling: “He said, ‘I saw the rushes from yesterday… You’re never going to make it in this business. The first time Tony Curtis was ever in a movie, he delivered a bag of groceries. You took one look at that guy and you said, That’s a movie star.’ And I leaned across his desk and I said, ‘I thought you were supposed to think that’s a grocery delivery boy.’”

    • Farhi says:

She reminds me of Juliette Binoche, pretty and understated.

      • Minxx says:

Are you kidding? Juliette Binoche has tons of character, passion, vivacity.. you name it. Vikander is .. gosh, I have no word to describe her.
“Forgettable” comes to mind. Zero charisma for sure

      • chelsea says:

@Minxx: Check back to Binoche at the beginning of her career, and you won’t see “loads of character, charisma etc.” That’s all hindsight.

  10. Insomniac says:

I don’t hate her, but ugh on that dress. It looks like a little girl nightie.

    • tracking says:

Yeah, she tends to gravitate toward the very girlish looks which, combined with her already ultra-young appearance and petite build, make her look like a child. I would prefer to see her in more mature looks.

      • Mira says:

On womans hour she basically said that the older she gets, the less make up and sexy dresses she wears. She basically said she used to dress up a lot more when she was younger, now she’s just into less is more.

      • tracking says:

I’m all for less is more, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the formal styles she chooses for events.

      • Original T.C. says:

I agree that this dress is too plain for an awards event but I cringe at the multiple comments calling her a little girl. She’s actually one of the few actresses that looks her age. Others are made to put on heavy makeup and either boob flashing or high side splits up to their vags to look like “appropriate” love interests for 40-50 year old men. That’s the brainwashing all young starlets are given. Get skinny and look older than your age.

Alicia is petite yes but she looks her age. The use of little girl is just so demeaning to call a fellow adult woman. Fassy’s other girlfriend Nicole-something also was just as short and youthful but she fell into the “wear skin tight clothes to show off your curves” which is equally fine . Different strokes for different ladies.

      • tracking says:

Again, I see your point, Original T.C., but to me petal pink plus polka dots plus abundant ruffles plus tiny build signifies young girlishness. It’s not about clothing that is revealing or not. She could have worn a classic sleeveless tea-length sheath that skimmed her shape (not tight), even in the same color, and looked like an adult 20-something woman. My opinion, obviously.

    • NN says:

I must be the only one who think she looks her age. I am her age and I look at my friends and we all sort of look like that. I wonder if some people are used to actresses who simply look older than their age? Most twenties something look like Alicia.

      • ell says:

agreed. i’m a year younger, and i also sort of look like her and so do all the 20 somethings i know (admittedly some look older and have wrinkles but they’re the odd ones).

      • tracking says:

I understand this point, but the ultra-girlish clothing choices make her look 17 rather than an adult 20-something imo.

  11. CornyBlue says:

I finally saw Danish Girl this weekend and yes she absolutely should be nominated in lead for it as well as in supporting for Ex Machina. I get that she came on a little too strong with her Oscar comments but she can actually pull it off i feel. Good on Fassy, the more people say Leo is a lock this year, the more i gravitate towards Fassy.

  12. Mira says:

She was on womans hour podcast on BBC the other day. She came across really well, not at all how she has been perceived on this site. She spoke very well, was funny and gracious and not at all cold or arrogant like people say here.

    • H says:

Do you have a link? Her Oscar thirsty comments earlier in the year really turned me off of her. If she’s not like that, happy to change my mind.

      • Mira says:

        Here you go.
        http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06shzhc
The interviewer mentioned the perception of her as cold. She basically said it was very frightening to make interviews in the beginning as she wasn’t used to it. Also said her english has improved a lot in the last year. Like Kiki said i think its because she’s opening up more and improved understanding of language and culture. She seems more comfortable, hence warmer more likeable.

    • Kiki says:

That’s because she is opening up. I saw some of her interviews on E! and she was delightful. If she keeps opening up and not cold and close offish, she will win me over.

At this point, I don’t care about her or Fassbender anymore.

    • SugarMalone says:

She also did a really great interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. In the preamble, the host actually said he’s glad he had almost an hour with her because she really starts to loosen up once she starts to feel comfortable.

      https://soundcloud.com/happysadconfused/alicia-vikander

      • ell says:

yeah, she seems one of those people it takes a while to get to know, and i can sympathise because i’m the same. i’ve been told i seem standoffish at first, whereas i’m just a bit shy so i tend to be guarded.

  13. Fluff says:

Have my tickets booked for Danish Girl for this week (my country got it later). Can’t wait!

  14. Meatball says:

He looks really good in that suit.

  15. Fanny says:

Why is it assumed that it was his decision not to be photographed with her? They’ve barely been photographed at events together and it appears to be a mutual decision to me. This is her moment and she’s smart to not make it about her boyfriend (and he’s smart to continue keeping his public life and his personal life separate).

Also, I think the idea that this is an on-and-off relationship is mostly wishful thinking. There was one breakup rumor that turned out not to be true. By all appearances, they have been together for about a year.

    • Peach says:

      ITA Fanny. Well said.

    • anon says:

Because she is the one who keeps on name dropping him at every chance she gets. She ACTUALLY said to a reporter that they flew together to Califronia and wrote their acceptance speeches together while playing games. He acts like she doesn’t exist. Plus, let’s face it, she is the one who needs him to be on her side, not him.

  16. Farhi says:

If Fassy didn’t want to be with her he wouldn’t. He definitely had no problems dropping his other girlfriends.
I think not walking the carpet together is a mutual decision because if they do the next thing that is going to happen media is going to start asking about the status of their relationship and when the wedding is. So I can see why they wouldn’t want that.
I personally wouldn’t stand for it ( my man not acknowledging me publicly) but I am not the one who has to deal with the media and interviews and emotional fans.

    • ell says:

i don’t see it as a case of her man not acknowledging her in public (or vice versa). they’re not normal people who can just out a relationship and be left alone, if they do they have to be ready to take intrusions, paps, endless questions that take away from their careers etc.

it’s like people who keep a distance while dating a co-worker to guard their privacy; everyone might know about it, but they don’t flaunt it because they want to be private. it’s not a rejection.

  17. Addison says:

As far as the fassion goes, Fassy looks awesome. Alicia looks terrible. That dress does not match the event.

  18. Minxx says:

Fassbender looks good, has a bit of a tan. Alicia looks like she’s back to her natural skin color as opposed to the spray-on tan look she was sporting lately (her fans eager to tell everyone she’s just a “dark skinned Swede” – I guess not! ;).
The dress is pretty but would be more appropriate on a 12 year -old for a church service, you’re right Kaiser. As to whether or not they should walk the red carpet together, I’m sure everyone has an opinion. If a couple doesn’t want to do it, it’s fine, as long as there is any evidence they’re actually having a relationship. Game of Jahtzee on a plane to an event … ;). Poor Alicia, always trying to convice everyone he’s her boyfriend (whether she’s asked or not). But then I’m sure they’re perfectly happy, hiding their bliss somewhere where virtually nobody can spot it. Good luck to them both. I’m curious to see what happens to this father/daughter looking couple after the Oscars.

    • TrixC says:

Her skin tone looks the same as usual to me. Also lighting makes a big difference to how one’s skin appears in photos.

  19. seesittellsit says:

This was so obviously a PR set up relationship from the start I wonder anyone bought it. She needed a star name to attach hers to on the way up, but they appear not even to like each other, and rumor has it he’s actually in love with Cotillard. She’s very pretty but I must say the affect of the ensemble in that photo above, including the hair, makes her look 12 years old.

    • Andrea says:

I find that far fetched just because I don’t see him in love with anyone, lust sure but not love. He is like my one guy friend, not ready to settle down (and my guy friend is 36).

  20. Petitehirondelle says:

I see him well with other Women like his co stars Marion Cotillard or Kate Winslet but mismatched with Vikander… I don’t know why… Web have never see them a lot together, them have a film coming

  21. Kate says:

Please someone, help me with a question!

On the Vogue cover she has (ugly) short hair. Now it’s long again. Which one is her real hair?

  22. moon says:

I think she’s an overrated crybaby actress. I personally can’t stand her acting. Expressive, but boring. Makes the same repetitive choices. But I think she is gorgeous. She should fire her stylist! I love her street style but those red carpet dresses are hideous. They always look cheap and badly put together and frankly, she just about pulls off these ugly dresses because she’s pretty. LV on a whole has gotten really terrible. As for Erdem – I like them in general, but this dress photographs like a layer cake.

  23. anon says:

This girl seriously needs to fire her stylists, they truly hate her
