2016 Golden Globes Open Post: Hosted by the real bloke, Idris Elba

wenn3687878

Here is our annual Golden Globes Open Post! This year’s host is Idris Elba, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor this year for his role in the Netflix film Beasts of No Nation. Idris is one of the few actors of color nominated in the film categories this year, and soon we’ll know if he is one of the few actors of color nominated for an Oscar this year (the Oscar nominations come out on Thursday). Idris is already a Golden Globe winner – he won a few years ago for Luther, but this year is his first nomination for a film role.

You can see the full list of TV nominees here and film nominees here. This year’s Golden Globes host is Ricky Gervais, and I suspect that we are in for a wild ride where Gervais goes after everyone and anyone. Mel Gibson will be there, and word is that Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt are going as each other’s dates! From what I’ve seen, the presenter list is pretty meh – I mean, Amber Heard? Kate Bosworth? Lady Gaga? Katy Perry? Jonah Hill? Seriously, all of those people are going to present. You can see the full list of presenters here.

CB & I will be tweeting throughout the red carpet – you can follow me on Twitter at KaiseratCB, and you can follow Celebitchy here. We’ll have wide-ranging fashion coverage tomorrow morning, starting bright and early!

I love award season! Wine on deck! 🙂

    • Liberty says:

Hahaha oh no.….the comment about the Uncle clothing is everything.

But honestly, I just want to sit here and sip my glass of lovely chilled Gewürztraminer on a snowy night and gaze at gorgeous Idris Elba, and swoon a little. Oh gods of good film fortune, clue in NOW and start rewarding him already.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Words are unnecessary!

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Eva Longoria looks frumpy and Regina King is wearing metallic breast plates and a superhero cape. This is going to be amusing. More wine!

    • gwen says:

…but she’s got great toned arms..

    • misery chick says:

@ LIILACFLOWERS; Thank you, YES, EL did indeed look frumpy.
The dress MAY have been ok, but that little cutout with the material surrounding it made it look like a maternity top or the top of a girls’ pajama set from the Sears catalog 😒

  3. Lilacflowers says:

    Alicia Vikander looks lovely.

  4. OSTONE says:

Alicia Vikander seems super nervous! She seemed like she was to break down crying when talking to Ryan Seacrest..

  5. Lilacflowers says:

Natalie Dormer’s look is not good.

  6. OSTONE says:

Wow JLO chose a different type of gown. LOVE it!!! See Sofia Vergara, it can be done!

    • Lilacflowers says:

      She looks really good.

    • vauvert says:

Back with more grumpy comments. Glad that JLo finally went for another sort of dress but that mustard poopy yellow, yikes… and then you add a cape, two necklaces, a bunch of bracelets, a swath of drapey fabric around your ass and a partridge in a pear tree. Oh and a double dose of tanner.

  7. Nev says:

    JLO. Stunning.

  8. Dick Move says:

Trends: dresses cut to the navel and pockets.

  9. OSTONE says:

What did Channing Tatum do to his hair?!!! 😱

  10. SloaneY says:

I don’t normally like sparkly gold junk but I like Brie Larsen’s dress. It looks fun.

  11. NUTBALLS says:

Who’s the chick with Oscar Isaac?? My heart is shattering in little bitty pieces as I type this.

    And Oyelowo’s suit is bonkers!

I like Brie’s sexy CK dress. She’s looking toned for Skull Island.

  12. OSTONE says:

No Katy Perry, NO. I can see T Swizzke having a full bipolar attack from cackling at Katy Perry’s horrible dress and hair and then fuming at her hanging out with JLaw 😂

  13. OSTONE says:

Saoirse Ronan looks like an angel. How can one be SO pretty?!

    • korra says:

She does look lovely and that dress is gorge. Not a fan of the top of Brie’s dress. Like the back and the lower part, not a fan of the top. And NO to her hair. Just NO.

  14. lisa2 says:

Funny there are usually way more comments about the RCs.

This just feels like a boring season. I don’t know.. maybe I’m expecting too much.

  15. InvaderTak says:

The fashion this go round is boring. Jamie Alexander is the only stand out to me. Some of them (Hudson, looking at you) get an ‘oh eff off’. Like really? Isn’t this supposed to be a major awards show?

  16. Gg says:

Hasn’t Kate Winslet worn that exact dress before?
And love JLaw in red but the fit of that dress is terrible. Keeps gapping.

    • Edie says:

I had the same thought about Kate Winslet’s dress! And then I thought, “Maybe she just knows what works for and sticks with it.” I give her props for being that self-aware in either instance.

    • lucy2 says:

She’s worn that color (but not that same dress) several times before. It’s a good color on her, but it does feel like she’s doing it a lot.

  17. GiGi says:

Care Blanchett wearing a gown from the Mother of the Bride line available at Chadwick’s of Boston…

    • Edie says:

I like the Edwardian feel of it, but I’d like to take some scissors to the wings and streamline that pink nightmare.

    • K2 says:

It makes me so sad – she used to be the best dresser at the Oscars, and then she shows up in that thing? My grandmother had a lampshade like that in the 1980s, and it was ugly even then.

      • Edie says:

It’s true! Last year’s Oscar look with the black gown and the statement turquoise blew me away, it was absolute perfection, I wanted to replicate it all summer. This year, I do not know what the hell happened.

  18. tifzlan says:

Fashion faves so far: Gina Rodriguez, Amy Adams, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kirsten Dunst.

I feel like i’ve seen Jenna Dewan’s dress on some other awards red carpet years back?

  19. Dick Move says:

Jane Fonda is wearing a coffee filter.

  20. Lilacflowers says:

    Fassy and Alicia sitting together

    • minxx says:

With The Danish Girl and Steve Jobs people (Kate/husband, Eddie/wife, movie director/wife). The PR people seated them together for a reason and yet their whole PDA amounted to her patting him on a back when his name was read 🙂

  21. Evasmom says:

Was that comment Ricky made about film companies paying for awards a slam against Brangelina?

    • Camille says:

Why them? The camera went immediately to Weinstein after that bit, who is notorious for heavy ‘campaigning’ in award season.

      • Evasmom says:

Oh good. I love Pitt and would have hated to see him get roasted like that. However, loved the Polanski dig.

      • Naya says:

The camera went to Weinstein and then Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, which was an interesting choice. I assumed the implication was that Weinstein buys awards for undeserving films. And with Damon and Pitt, the running gag that HFPA only nominates undeserving films to attract big stars to the ceremony. In other words, it was a broader statement on the smoke & mirrors of the Golden Globes.

    • M.A.F. says:

No, it was aimed at Harvey Weinstein. Hence, the cut away directly towards him.

    • Louise177 says:

@Evasmom: That’s a bizarre comment to make. The haven’t won anything in years. I think they’ve been nominated just a couple of times in ten years. I know they are hated but it’s a stretch to claim they buy awards.

      • Camille says:

I thought it was a weird comment too…

      • Evasmom says:

Whatever, it was just a question. I remember there being some chatter about Jolie working hard behind the scenes to get awards for The Tourist and some of Pitt’s movies. And they did cut to him after the comment so just wondered if there was some shade. No biggie.

  22. SusanneToo says:

That was a surprise – Kate Winslet for BS in a movie.

  23. SusanneToo says:

Taraji is gorgeous and beautiful gown.

  24. Alexandra says:

Terrence grabbing Taraji’s hand and she is totally not having it. She must be dreading to be asked to present with him at every Awards Show.

    • InVain says:

I noticed it too….and that weird way he stared at her as she was speaking. Yuck. I feel for her. She looked amazing.

    • SloaneY says:

That poor girl. She’s obviously uncomfortable. Why do they keep doing that to her?

    • Colette says:

I doubt it since they are great friends. There are tons of videos of them at each other’s houses after work or on the weekends. If she had a problem with him she wouldn’t spend so much time with him and Jussie outside of work.

    • claire says:

Are they on the outs or something?

  25. Edie says:

Eddie Redmayne is wearing… shiny polka dots… of course he is… and he gets away with it! He and my husband’s 80 year-old Austrian grandmother. Wear them in good health, kitten.

  26. NUTBALLS says:

    Hooray for Wolf Hall!

  27. Lilacflowers says:

Oscar Isaac, Oscar Isaac, Oscar Issac!

  28. Tiffany says:

Ummm….Jamie and Amber. No. You will be forgotten about in a years time.

They managed to piss me off in 30 seconds.

  29. Tania says:

Dress LOVE: Jenna Dewan Tatum, JLo, Alicia Vikander, Jamie Alexander and Kate Bosworth. Sadly, I don’t think Amy Schumer’s dress is at all flattering on her.

    • claire says:

So in love with Jenna’s dress. Love Alicia’s too. And Lily Tomlin’s dress is such a pretty color. She looks great.

  30. noodle says:

oh man, lady gaga looks like a cross between Sophia loren and Marilyn Monroe. and also considering that she’s 29, she looks like a 60yo over botoxed cougar. I’d rather her do the meat dress and be generally annoying thinking she all dat

  31. OSTONE says:

Jon Hamm totally a goodbye Golden Globe. It was between Bob and Remi!

  32. InvaderTak says:

Jon Hamm, really GGs? This is getting more annoying by the minute.

    • ERM says:

I am finding the “humor” lacking and a bit overly crass.

      • InvaderTak says:

Did A Schumer say the c word there??? Is she over YET. Everyone in the room looked some form of disgusted.

      • SloaneY says:

Jlaw and Aschu are no Tina and Amy.

      • Cricket says:

I thought what she said was OTT. But DM has up the Gervais tweeted this ‘Better get dressed and offend some humourless c**ts I suppose.’ So I think it was a dig at him

      • Ally8 says:

OMG, the Gervais line about JLaw and Schumer… “It’s like they’ve never had a friend before.” Dying.

  33. lucy2 says:

I’m late to the party, but am not loving most of the gowns. Too many plunging necklines and weird cut outs. So far I like Jenna Tatum’s (again with the neckline though), Amy Adams’ is different, and all of the ladies who went with white gowns (except Fonda).
JLo’s makeup is so harsh! And Katy Perry looks like someone stretched out her head.
Blanchett disappoints, and I don’t even care for Zendaya’s.

  34. NUTBALLS says:

    Amy Adams looks AMAZING!

    • vauvert says:

She is gorgeous but I thought the colour really clashed with her skin and what is that weird shiny pattern going down her side? I wasn’t loving the cut of the top either – it reminded me of a Speedo bathing suit.

  35. InVain says:

Kate and Kurt were so cute….but that collar she was wearing – just no.

  36. Gg says:

Gosling got his hot back. And he’s taller than I thought.

  37. InvaderTak says:

Wake me when Cap A$$ shows up

  38. Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Jaime Foxx saved it there for a bit when he presented. Always hilarious.

Quentin is so offensive and I am glad that both Regina King and Jaime Foxx were not having his use of the word “ghetto” .

  39. InVain says:

Zoolander 2 preview is the funniest thing so far…

  40. Yepisaidit says:

I hope we get an article on this site about what Brad Pitt had done to his face and why he looks so damn orange. 💁🏽

  41. OSTONE says:

Omg Lady Gaga gtfo soooo arrogant. “My cast” he didn’t thank fiancé Taylor Kinney, reminds me of Lainey’s blind…

  42. Insomniac says:

Um, Lady Gaga beat Kirsten Dunst? I don’t think I’m allowed to use the kind of language here that would fully express how I feel about *that.* What a crock.

    • Camille says:

The whole awards show has been weird to me.

    • Jayna says:

Unbelievable. And all she ever talks about is how music was her life and how she fought and fought to make it, playing at dive clubs, stripping. . And every time she met a famous singer or band, you are who inspired me. It got to be comical that she kept saying the same thing to every older singer/musician/band she met.

Now, in her award speech, she really wanted to be an actress first but the music thing worked out. WTF? And “my” cast. And I feel for Taylor, that she forgot him.

But the whole thing of how she does something to her body, wears it down or something she said (WTH?) and how her “team” takes care of everything for her because she becomes like a baby and can’t do anything, and that allows her to go to all of these creative places.

P-R-E-T-E-N-T-I-O-U-S. The actors in the audience must have been rolling in the aisles in their minds with the whole I become like a baby part and my team takes care of me and everything.

She started out wooden in the beginning. Did she get better actingwise to win the award? I don’t like the show, so stopped watching.

Gaga is only 29 and looked in her 40s with that bleached white hair, and when she was crying, the photo I saw, showed how she had filler and botox going on. Her face was odd. A scrunched up crying face gives it away every time because your face does funky things with filler and botox. Why at 29 do that to yourself?

      • Insomniac says:

No, I don’t think her acting got much better over this season. She was OK in small doses, but I was cringing in scenes where she was given a lot to do (like the whole backstory episode).

      • Naya says:

Did she forget Taylor though? I saw people commenting that she was weird with him even before her name was called.

      • Ally8 says:

That moment/gif with Lady Gaga and Leonardo Di Caprio, LOL. This is how Leo reacts whenever touched by a blonde over the age of 23.

    • NUTBALLS says:

The best part of Gaga’s win was Leo’s expression when she bumped into his elbow on her way up.

Michael K cracked me up with this comment:

“That’s how Leonardo DiCatchAHo reacts whenever he’s that close to a vagina that isn’t attached to a 23-year-old blonde model.”

  43. Sass says:

What did Ricky Gervais say to Mel Gibson after he came back on the stage. Comment was cut on TV here in US.

  44. InvaderTak says:

Gagmeeeee….Geez they had to get the music to get her off the stage.

  45. Chaucer says:

JLaw looks like she belongs at some Republican Convention, right? Something is off. The hair or makeup, I can’t get over it.

  46. Tiffany says:

Tom’s intro was longer than Denzel’s speech. Love that he took his family to the stage. GET YOUR GLASSES!!!

  47. Louise177 says:

The Globes always have out of the box winners but it seems more so this year than the past.

  48. Colette says:

Congrats Taraji .I’m glad she shouted out her cast .Like she said there is no Cookie without Luscious.

  49. Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Taraji is LIFE! I love her!

  50. Cricket says:

Loved Jason Statham and Melissa McCarthy presenting, he was a riot!

  51. Tiffany says:

Jim Carrey. Nailed it. That is all.

  52. CJW says:

    Brad Pitt….that is all.

  53. InVain says:

Okay – am I the only one that noticed Leo’s lip…? What was going on there?

  54. vauvert says:

Cate Blanchett has lost her fashion mojo. She needs help. And who is dressing Katy Perry nowadays? My God, what an epic fail of a dress and hair.

  55. SusanneToo says:

I just found out that The Revenant was a difficult shoot-cold, muddy, tiring. Who knew?

    • Cat'sMeow says:

      Hahahahah

    • Dara says:

Wait…I thought they filmed it all on a soundstage in Burbank. You mean they were actually cold and miserable, not just acting cold and miserable? Doesn’t that mean it should be considered for the Documentary category and not Drama?

  56. Antonym says:

Leo’s speech made me love him again (not like that).

  57. Patty says:

I don’t get this hard on for Jennifer Lawrence. Pretty much any one of the other nominees in that category would have been a better pick.

    • Sarah01 says:

      +million
I actually hope that she wins everything all the time so even her staunch supporters will get sick of her so many better actresses, why her???

    • kate says:

Really? I thought she was the obvious choice. I loved Spy, but Melissa McCarthy was just doing her usual thing and Jason Statham stole the show. Trainwreck was great, but Amy Schumer’s acting was nothing special. Maggie Smith was nominated for being Maggie Smith. Lily Tomlin was the only real competition, and she was fantastic, but her film was weak (weaker than Joy) and little seen.

Joy is a messy, badly paced film, but Lawrence gave a really excellent performance.

Now Kate Winslet, that’s a case of the worst performance winning.

    • korra says:

I’m with you. I’m sad Mccarthy didn’t win.

  58. OSTONE says:

Ricky Gervais: From myself and Mel Gibson, Shalom! 😂😂😂😂😂

    • Lurker says:

      That was his best joke!

    • Adele Dazeem says:

That was Gervais’ best line and genuinely funny. Can’t believe we had to wait to the very end of the broadcast for it and it was almost lost in the noise of the closing credits.

  59. SusanneToo says:

It just seemed kind of blah to me. Maybe because of so many strange choices as winners.

  60. Jayna says:

    Loved Jim Carrey.

    • Sarah01 says:

      Me too!
I thought Ricky was hilarious except for *ss joke in the monologue everything else was on point!
The wins were so disappointing except for best actor, actress, director and movie.
      Loved Denzel!!!
      Loved Stallone!
Loved Leo giving a shout out to indigenous peoples around the world and reclaiming their lands and ways of life. And for us to save our planet.
Loved Eva Longria and America Ferrara as presenters, best of the night other than Jim.
Loved that The Robot won too!
Best dressed was Eddie and I would like to own that dress the NBC presenter wore, the muted pink one.
A lot of wtf winners but Ricky already clarified it’s been paid for!
Really wanted Idris to win badly : (
Sad that beasts of no nation got grossly underepresented, it was magnificent.
Helen classy all the way loooooooved her necklace!

      • Naya says:

I’m conflicted about Gervais. Like with the pay disparity jokes it wasnt clear whether he was laughing with female actors or laughing at them. There was a crazy amount of trans themed jokes, I counted three by the end of the show. Again, its hard to know if he is pandering to transphobes or just making comment. I loved the take down of Mel Gibson, Affleck and awards systems in general. But bottom line, none of my laugh out loud moments came from Ricky Gervais.

      • Persephone says:

I thought he was just making a comment that these actors playing trans characters are men. And it was an excuse to make an old men have saggy balls joke. Actually, probably just the latter.

  61. Carmen says:

Best dressed: Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, Queen Latifah and America Ferrara.

  62. manta says:

It’s Monday morning where I live. Just sipping my coffee and the radio is announcing David Bowie’s death. I feel like crawling back into my bed. This is an awful beginning of the week!!!!!

    • Word says:

      I just read…RIP David..

    • claire says:

My heart freaking fell out of my chest when I saw the news. I just can’t believe it. Horrible, horrible news. 🙁

    • Persephone says:

Thought it was a hoax at first, now I’m sitting here blubbing.

      • fee says:

It’s almost 2 AM where I am and I soooo badly wanted it to be a hoax. I feel so heartbroken right now. I’ve decided that the only appropriate action is to play my favorite Bowie song and cry.

    • Jayna says:

What? I just woke up with insomnia and thought I would read more about the Golden Globes.

I’ve been listening to his new album since it came out a few days ago and his fans on music blogs are so excited by his new release, getting rave reviews. People who worked with him on the album talked about how involved he was in it and the play he was working on.

It’s been such an exciting time to be a fan. Many of us were even daring to think he might do a couple of shows and put them on on DVD.

I’m devastated. Poor Iman and his son and daughter. I’m so glad he got to see his album come out and see the acclaim it was getting and do his two music videos. He left an amazing legacy of music and two really great albums at the very end of his career and life. Fans and critics have talked about how amazing at 69 he was putting out something so fresh and strange and jazz fusion, so Bowie, but not dated.

I thought the death must have been sudden. But he had cancer. So he was working on the play and his last album while he had cancer. Still so creative all the way to the end.

And poor Tony Visconti, his longtime producer and friend.

    • SusanneToo says:

      A real shock. RIP, David.

    • Sixer says:

“And all the fat, skinny people
And all the tall, short people
      And all the nobody people
      And all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people”

      Thanks, David, and RIP.

  63. I'm With The Band says:

I just read that too. I’ll be breaking out my copy of Labyrinth tonight 😢

  64. Kate Bush says:

David Bowie 🙁 no words right now

  65. TotallyBiased says:

    There’s a Starman
    Waiting in the Sky.
He’d like to come and meet us
But he thinks he’d blow our minds.
There’s a Starman waiting in the Sky.
He’s told us not to blow it
Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile.
