Bryce Dallas Howard in Jenny Packham at the Globes: sequin lace fug or daring?

Bryce Dallas Howard at The 73rd Golden Globe Awards in LA
Bryce Dallas Howard was one of the few women in sequins last night, which Giuliana and Brad pointed out was a trend to watch. Bryce combined two trends in this fug dress, lace and metallic. There’s some sort of patchy print going on too and it’s just too much. We know that Bryce is solely to blame for this dress, not a stylist, because she told Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet that she picked it up off the rack at Neiman Marcus herself and that she does that because she’s a size six and likes to have a lot of options. (It’s possible a stylist was with her, but Giuliana asked her if she got it herself and she said “yes.” She also has a really nasal voice, right?)

Here’s Bryce’s dress for sale at Neiman Marcus. It retails for $4,800! At least she can write it off her taxes. Can you imagine being a size six movie star and being told by stylists and designers that they can’t dress you until you slim down like 15-20 pounds? That’s so absurd to me, but that’s how it works.

Felicity Huffman unfortunately gets grouped here because she’s similarly in fug seqins. She’s wearing Lorena Sarbu and this looks like a superhero costume with the dragon flame like detail around the bustline. I really dislike her hair that color, she dyed it last fall and I wish she would go back to blonde. Felicity was nominated for best actress in a limited TV series or movie, for American Crime, which went to Lady Gaga. I didn’t see Fargo yet so I don’t know about Kirsten Dunst’s performance, which is getting raves, but I did see American Crime last season and Felicity played that dour nasty role perfectly. She’s an incredible actress.

Felicity’s American Crime costar Regina King made a lot of worst dressed lists in this busy gold scalloped sequin Krikor Jabotian gown with a white diaphanous cape. I don’t care if this is kind of crazy, she is owning the look. Those shoes are too much though. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, which went to Maura Tierney. Regina won the Emmy in this category last year.

Here’s Uzo Aduba doing much better with the sequin trend. (I don’t have a designer ID on this dress yet but will update when I find one. Ryan Seacrest never asked Uzo whom she was wearing.) She was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Uzo doesn’t have a Golden Globe yet, but she has a SAG and a couple of Emmys among other awards.

Presenter Julianne Moore knocked it out of the park in marine blue Tom Ford. Look at her rocking that dress. This is how you do metallics. This dress fit her like a glove and it’s inspired in its simplicity. It’s clean and modern and has just one distinguishing detail other than the incredible color and shine – an asymmetric open neck paired with a rounded collar. There’s also an open v-neck back.

Melissa McCarthy was in metallics too, although she didn’t have sequins like the other ladies. I think this is her own design although I need to get confirmation on that. Melissa was nominated for her work in Spy, which went to Jennifer Lawrence for Joy. I saw Spy but haven’t seen Joy yet and McCarthy was hilarious. I was mildly disappointed that she didn’t win. This dress looks fug full-on, but I liked the top half, especially on camera.

Uzo looks amazing. The dress, the hair – perfect. Julianne also.
    I kinda like Bryce’s dress.
I like the top part of Melissa’s dress. And her hair and makeup. She’s so so pretty, isn’t she?

    • Dani2 says:

Uzi and Julianne killed it. I can’t say which look I prefer, and Melissa looks pretty good as well.

      • ichsi says:

Aye! Uzo always kills it and it gives me so much joy. She has an atypical body for Hollywood yet she still looks like a million bucks on the red carpet. Watch and learn ladies, watch and learn.

    • elise says:

IMO, Julianne wins best dressed for the evening. At first glance, I was’t 100% convinced, but I was convinced after looking at slideshows of all the fug dresses everyone else showed up wearing.

      • Carol says:

Hands down, Julianne was best dressed. That dress, its color, was to die for and it looked fantastic on Julianne. Jaw dropped when I saw that dress.

Regina looks like she’s auditioning for The Fly.
Uzo looked lovely and so did Melissa.
Felicity’s hair looks like mine. That’s not a good thing.

  2. Alex says:

She should work with Siriano. He regularly dresses stars bigger than a size 2 and curvier figures.
Not in love with the dress cause I think it was too much

  3. Snowpea says:

Our local rag, the Sydney Morning Herald, had this ridiculous breathless piece today about how BDH bought this number OFF THE RACK and in a SIZE TEN!

I don’t even know what a US size 10 is and who cares cos she looks cute and gorgeous. Wtf is wrong with the world when this shit is so breathlessly reported on as if it’s some sorta revolutionary paradigm in fashion that will stop the world in its tracks?

  4. Goats on the Roof says:

Melissa’a dress is plan awful. This isn’t the first time she’s worn her own design and looked terrible. I don’t think she has an eye for what looks nice or flattering.

    • Blannie says:

She always wears things with too much fabric! If the sleeves weren’t so voluminous, the dress would have looked a lot better. If the skirt didn’t have so much volume, she’d have looked much better. She’s lost a lot of weight, but is still dressing like she weighs 60 lbs more. She’s a gorgeous woman and needs someone to help her get the proportions right.

      • justagirl says:

^^^ I agree! There are a few things about that dress that are just “almost”. I think she said on the red carpet that she’s doing the test-run by wearing it, then they’ll tweak it before making it available…but they should do some of those tweaks next time before she hits the carpet.

Also, having spent many years in an unflattering poor-fitting bra myself, she needs a different and/or better bra, the girls need more help than they’re getting…which makes a world of difference for clothes.

  5. kri says:

So the scandal is being a size 6, eh? F*ck Hollywood. Oth, Julianne Moore is AMAZING.

    • tracking says:

+1 I hadn’t seen Julianne Moore before this post. Perfection. FTW.

    • felixswan2 says:

@Kri, totally agree! It’s preposterous that a size 6 is considered large. Messed up ideals! And Julianne does look amazing.

    • antipodean says:

Julianne Moore is drop-dead gorgeous, but her best accessory is the similarly foine Mr Tom Ford! That man should be cast in bronze!

  6. Chloe says:

Love Julianne’s dress (except the neck strap) and I think Melissa looks beautiful.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Julianne looks stunning. I’m not a sequins lover, but that color is wonderful for her.

    • Mgsota says:

Julianne – perfection. The color of that dress with her hair color and complexion is a match made in heaven.

      • deborah says:

I hate Julianne’s dress — don’t understand why it is considered stunning or perfect. It looks fussy and like something we wore in junior high back in the 70s. It looks uncomfortable, over-fussy and old-ladyish. At least Tom Ford is half-way smiling here … maybe the first time I’ve ever seen him without his ‘smoldering’ scowl.

  8. D says:

So according to this https://www.jcrew.com/sizecharts/main.jsp?sizeChart=1,3 a US size 6 equals a size 34-38 , how could that possibly be considered big? It kinda makes me not want to live on this planet anymore 🙁

  9. Chinoiserie says:

At least Melissa looked better than last time at the Globes.

  10. JulieM says:

I’m no fan of Kirsten Dunst, but she was wonderful in Fargo. Must see.

  11. lucy2 says:

I kind of like the bottom half of Bryce’s dress, but the lace part on the top ruins it for me.
Regina is one of the best actresses out there and I love her, but I don’t get that dress.
    Julianne looks fabulous.

  12. Mimz says:

I’m not a fan of sequins, but I got to say that Regina’s dress, although overall kinda fug, the work that was put into making those sequins look like flowers is really stunning. I don’t get the cape and I hate it, was completely unnecessary, but if I were standing next to her I’d probably be staring at the details of her dress.
Julianne looks amazing, hands down. and I also love Tom Ford.

Melissa is a stunning gal and I’ve been looking at her for weight-loss inspo, but she needs to leave those sleeves, and that notion that plus size clothing needs to have bell sleeves or kimono style gowns. We love other types of dresses, just look at how amazingly Queen Latifah wore several types of dresses on her heavier days (and today still, looking amazing).

But Melissa is beautiful. You can tell she’s really happy.

    • CharlotteCharlotte says:

Regina is giving me mermaid-with-legs-for-the-evening realness.

Melissa looks so pretty and so happy and I wish she could learn to dress.

Julianne so seldom gets it right.

  13. oliphant says:

I LOVE BRYCE!!!!!! ahem. that is all.

  14. Fran says:

Love Melissa’s dress, beautiful colour and shape! I’d wear that.
    Also Julianne’s fantastic.

  15. Wentworth Miller says:

    Why, with that dress, Riley?

  16. vauvert says:

I thought Julianne looked great, which made me happy. I love her and usually hate her style but she nailed here.
And I thought Felicity rocked that dress, it was one of my faves of the night.
Melissa’s dress gave me shivers. Too shiny and bulky and awfully cut, like someone just pinned a big bolt of fabric around her and said “done”.

  17. Hejhej says:

I have a weakness for Bryce so I’m biased but I don’t think she looks terrible at all. And it’s SO depressing that she’s considered too big to dress 🙁

    • Maria A. says:

The Washington Post Style section today gave Bryce praise for buying off the rack, due to normal, everyday woman size issues – that are only an issue for Hollywood apparently. Kudos to Bryce for being pragmatic and looking quite good at it.

  18. Vylette says:

I love Regina king! And kinda like her dress too. 🙂 I thought Julianne’s dress was meh. Liked BDH’s dress better.

  19. lila fowler says:

BDH said that her dress was off the rack and yeah, it looks it. Blah. Matronly.

  20. Gina says:

Love Regina KIng! Especially her role in “Ray”. She’s very talented and underrated

  21. What's inside says:

Such an ugly dress for a pretty girl.

  22. cd3 says:

I actually love all of these looks and dresses. I kind of love that this post showcased women of different ages, sizes and ethnicities. They all looked amazing IMO. Compared to the post that showed Katy Perry, Kate Bosworth and “Amanda” Heard (HAHAHA), the ladies in this post knocked it out of the park.
