Regina King won an Emmy for her work on American Crime: did you watch it?

American Crime’s first season, created by Oscar winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) aired this Spring. It’s returning later this year with a completely new storyline featuring some of the same actors in different roles. While the show is powerful and interesting, it has such a gritty, morose feel and the subject matter is so depressing that I had a hard time getting through it. It needs more moments of levity, and hopefully Scott will work to break up the monotony in the second season.

American Crime was nominated for 10 Primetime Emmys last night, many of which went to Olive Kitterage, which ultimately won in the category for Outstanding Limited Series. One exception was the Supporting Actress category, which went to Regina King! She seemed genuinely surprised by her win in this category and looked a little freaked out at first.

King quickly composed herself and gave a great little speech. She joked “I should have brought one of those papers that all the comedy people had. I was not expecting this.” When she said she would “listen to God,” to help her figure out what to say, I had a moment where I thought “didn’t she mean Allah?” because she played such a convincing Muslim woman on AC. She brought her son as her date and told him, “you make being a mother my greatest accomplishment,” which got to me.

King was in an incredible Krikor Jabotian backless structured white gown, which was shaped like a bell. This dress looked so elegant on camera.

I’m including photos of American Crime’s Felicity Huffman, who recently dyed her hair brunette (maybe it’s for a role although I can’t confirm that) and looked like a totally different person. Felicity is wearing Laura Basci. There are also photos of their co-star Penelope Ann Miller, (I don’t have a designer ID on her gown but it looks like Marchesa) and Zoe Kazan in Miu Miu. Kazan was nominated in this category for Olive Kitterage. I like that she went with a modern print for her dress, it’s different and fresh. I didn’t know she was dating Paul Dano. He seems like a d-bag to me, but that’s because I mostly know him from 12 Years a Slave.

I like the candy stripe dress.

    • mimif says:

ME TOO. What is wrong with us?

I want to love Regina’s gown because it’s fairly amazing, but the bust area is ruining it for me. So happy she won!

    • Lilacflowers says:

The candy stripe dress stood out every time they showed the audience. I kept thinking: “oh, stand up so I can see that dress!”

    • mia girl says:

OMG Kazan’s candy stripped dress was one of my favorites of the night. Seriously. So fresh. And her styling was on point.

Oh, and she and Dano have been dating forever.

      • OverFirstAve. says:

Loved her (Kazan’s) look, so fresh, yes.
They are a cute couple. So sweet.

      • Saywhatwhen says:

Lovely dress. Also, is it just me or do they look like brother and sister?

      • Anne tommy says:

Just here to say Paul Dano is great! Little Miss Sunshine, There will be Blood, Prisoners, the recent brilliant Love and Mercy, he’s fab in all of them, and more. Dunno where the douche thing comes from, he seems pretty low key to me and they have been together for a long time.

      • ds says:

@ANNE yes, Dano is a super talented young actor. I’ve loved him in every single project I’ve seen him in and thought he was incredible.

    • Carol says:

It was my favorite dress as well. Very different than the other ladies and so chic. Felicity Huffman was unrecognizable. And Regina’s dress looked like a wedding cake.

      • wiffie says:

Regina’s dress reminds me of that scene in Frozen where Anna falls in a creek, and then walking into the store, her dress is all frozen.

        She looks beautiful though.

  2. K says:

So freaking happy she won! I love her she is just so talented. Still bitter she wasn’t nominated for her work on southland. Well deserved this was my favorite moment of the night.

    She looked beautiful too.

    • HK9 says:

I loved southland too so I’m soo glad she’s been rewarded for being so incredibly talented!!

      • MrsNix says:

I have ALWAYS worshipped Regina King, but in Southland…oh, she tore up that show. She was SO good. I was wrecked they stopped making it.

    • mia girl says:

She was amazing in Southland. And I’m still bitter she wasn’t at least nominated for a supporting actress Academy Award for Jerry McGuire.

Love Regina King – so happy for her.

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

Loved her since Poetic Justice. Soooo good.

      • Denisemich says:

She has been on TV since she was a child. Remember 227 and Jackee Harry.

Good for Regina. I was surprised to realize she is also a director. Good for her.

    • Audrey says:

I was happy and surprised to see that she won.

Let me be honest: I had no idea the emmy’s were on, I never watch TV and I have really bad taste in movies.

Anyway, I recently went on Miss Congeniality and Legally blonde binges and I was wondering if Regina had snagged any roles more worthy of her talent.

I was going to google her but saw this instead. I’m so happy for her 🙂 I love how excited her son is

    • Alex says:

This! She deserved at least 2 Emmys for her work on Southland. I was always bitter that she didn’t win. But AC was amazing as well.
Lemme just say Taraji’s reaction was so cute (they are really close) and the support Vila, Taraji, Uzo and Regina have been showing each other during award season is amazing as a woman and a POC.

Also how awesome was that Apple Music commercial?

    • lucy2 says:

Yes! I haven’t seen AC, so I’m considering this a retroactive win for her amazing work on Southland. She has been one of those actors doing great work with little recognition for YEARS, so I hope this pushes her up to the next level a bit, she really deserves it.
Her speech was lovely and I like her dress too.

  3. manda says:

I have liked Regina King since 227! I am happy for her!

  4. Freddy Spaghetti says:

I’m so glad Regina won! I didn’t watch American Crime, but she was awesome in Southland and her Emmy is very well deserved.

    • Byte Me says:

I watched American Crime and it was good but at times pretty heavy. Regina was excellent in her part but I was slightly disappointed that Felicity Huffman didn’t win as she was also excellent. Happy to hear they will both be back in the next season.

  5. vauvert says:

Regina looked awesome!! And Timothy looked really happy for her, which is nice to see.
Penelope is so beautiful, and I would have added her dress if the gold lace was on top of a navy or deep red layer instead of the oh-so boring nude.
I love Zoe’s red print dress, so fresh and different!! Wish more ladies made a bolder choice like this.

  6. Dancinnancy says:

Zoe and Paul made a movie where he is a writer who creates the perfect girlfriend and she comes to life. Adorable! Also Paul Dano just killed it as Brian Wilson in Love and Mercy.

I adore Regina – she was amazing on Southland. Thrilled she finally won!

  7. OverFirstAve. says:

Love Regina King. Glad she won. Good for her.

PenelopeAM has turned into Naomi Watts. I thought it was Naomi Wattsfor a second, Penelope’s body looks amazing.

Zoe Kazan, so cute. Great actress , loved her in Olivia Kitteridge.

  8. Chinoiserie says:

Her dress is gorgeous and I like that neckline so much, it used too rarely I feel.

Btw, I am a Christian but my father is a Muslim and he and every Muslim I know calls their god just god. Allah is just arabian for god, this is a bet peeve of my father’s when people say Muslims believe in Allah and not god.

  9. Mar says:

Regina has been in a lot of great movies and has had a great career. Good for her!

  10. Wallflower says:

So happy Regina won. She is a great actress and looked really good last night.

  11. Anare says:

I was completely hooked on American Crime. Superbly written. Powerful acting from everyone. I was especially rooting for Richard Cabral to win best supporting actor. He was phenominal, blew me away.

  12. Matador says:

So glad she won! American Crime was so-so, though the actors were all terrific. Was hoping Richard Cabral would join her with a win.

Felicity’s hair is most likely for the second season of American Crime, which is currently filming in Austin.

  13. Josefa says:

I was rooting for Sarah Paulson because her work on AHS:FS was spectacular, but I only found out American Crime existed last night. Anyway, Regina looked gorgeous and her speech felt so sincere and heartfelt, I was happy for her in the end. Go girl!

    • Ab Fab says:

Her speech was the only one that made me cry. It was so obvious it was from somewhere deep. Love her. So glad she won.

  14. MediaMaven says:

Regina’s dress was magical………….I loved it. She looked like a princess.

  15. Rux says:

I watched all of American Crime and found Regina to be riveting — and the reason to watch. I am exceedingly happy for her that she won; so well deserved.

  16. Corrie says:

    Great win. Long overdue.

  17. ugh says:

    about time!

  18. kri says:

Regina King has been working forever! I am so glad she got some recognition. The woman can do it all. Congrats, Ms. King. You deserve it!

  19. serena says:

Let’s give some love to William H. Macy too, shall we? You didn’t even nominate him 🙁

  20. FingerBinger says:

Penelope Ann Miller’s dress is all wrong. The back of the dress is ok but the front is too low. Regina King has been around forever. It’s about time she gets some recognition.

  21. Carmen says:

I’d say the award was a toss-up between King and Huffman. Both if them were excellent.

I like King’s dress but not on her. It doesn’t do anything for her.

Miller’s dress is gorgeous and she looks great in it.

  22. Gina says:

Regina King was AMAZING in “Ray”

  23. Abby_J says:

American Crime was actually more depressing than the first season of Broadchurch, and that is saying something. I came for Timothy Hutton (I just really miss Leverage, y’all.), but stayed for all of the interesting characters and fascinating story line. I knew that it was coming back for a second season, but I didn’t realize it would be a different story with the same actors playing different people. I love that idea.

Admittedly, I had to do something happy after I watched because wow, that show was really depressing.

    • misery chick says:

@ Abby_I–I came for Timothy Hutton and stayed for Timothy Hutton. AC was slow, frustrating, maddening…but all of the acting was BREATHTAKING. Really looking forward to next season now I know what to expect pacing-wise and what NOT to expect- a tidy resolution all tied up with a ribbon. Can’t wait 😊

  24. Renee says:

Regina’s Emmy was well-derserved. She is a talented versatile actor.

  25. lila fowler says:

I’m so happy she won and not Sarah Paulson. SP’s role seemed so gimmicky and dumb, and AHS:FS was god awful. I will never understand how it got as many nominations as it did.

  26. tracking says:

Regina King is such a talent, and her dress is spectacular. Looking forward to seeing her on the Leftovers next!

    • mia girl says:

Me too! It was a GREAT to see that she joined the cast. Season 2 looks good.

      • Tiffany says:

Man. Now I have to watch The Leftovers. The things I do for you Regina.

      • tracking says:

Ha, Tiffany. It won’t make much sense if you don’t watch season 1. Be warned, it’s a slow burn. Just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore (about midway through) I got hooked. Dark stuff, but great cast.

    • mia girl says:

      Totally agree @tracking.
Tiffany – it is a super slow burn, for like the first 4-5 episodes. You might even feel like you are hate watching it! But then it all came together from there on out and got better each week. There are some standout performances by Carrie Coon, Ann Dowd, Christopher Eccleston and Amy Brenneman and yes, local favorite Justin Theroux.

*Hated Theroux’s son’s storyline though (or maybe I just don’t like the actor)

  27. Sarah says:

congratulations to her, she was incredible!!! I loved the show because it beautifully illustrated that life and people are vastly grey and hardly ever black and white.
