Taraji P. Henson in Stella McCartney at the Globes: amazing or bridal?

Taraji P Henson was feeling herself last night. And it was glorious. Did it at times veer into “glorious mess” territory? Yes, but even then, I still enjoyed it, mostly because I love Taraji. Taraji wore Stella McCartney, one of the few – maybe the only? – people to wear Stella at the Globes. Like most Stella gowns, there are issues with the tailoring and the dress makes Taraji look a bit paunchy. But she felt great, and she was enjoying herself the whole time on the red carpet and inside. She seemed completely plastered by the time she won, and when her name was called, she handed out cookies (like her character, COOKIE) to people around her.

Natalie Dormer in J. Mendel. This was honestly one of my least favorite looks of the night, right up there with Rooney Mara’s McQueen. I don’t think Dormer was too pleased with it either. She looks fashion-shell-shocked.

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy. I cannot find a photo of the back of her gown, which is basically the best part. The front is pretty bridal and conservative, but the back is DRAMA. I thought Laverne looked great, as usual. She’s actually one of my favorites on the red carpet, mostly because she seems to be having the time of her life.

Maura Tierney also wore Elizabeth Kennedy and her look is bridesmaid-y to Laverne’s bridal dress. Still, I love Maura and I’m happy she won for The Affair, in which she’s probably the best actor on the show.

Taraji was giving jlo a run for her money, man the posing was laughable.
She did look very pretty but her eyebrows looked odd.

    • Esmom says:

I thought her face looked really jacked, Maura’s too.

    • word says:

I saw her posing on the red carpet and laughed because these celebs take themselves way too seriously. She wasn’t the only one. Many of them need to learn how to pose without looking “try-hard”.

    • Carmen says:

She surely was. Her poses looked clownish. She might as well have screamed out loud “LOOKIT MEEEEEEE!!”

And that dress was just too bridey.

    • cd3 says:

What was with they eyebrows? She looked like Janet Jackson. Not meant as a compliment. Her dress was unremarkable.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

Laverne looks amazing. One of the best dressed of the night.
I’m so happy Maura won. She’s great on The Affair. I’ve loved her ever since ER. Abby and Luka 4eva.

  3. Jenns says:

I think Natalie Dormer stole her gown from the Game of Thrones set…

    • FingerBinger says:

Natalie Dormer stole her gown from the drunk mother of the bride store.

    • RJ says:

Saw this comment on another site “Natalie, you were supposed to wear the sequined thong UNDER the dress!”

    • cd3 says:

      HA HA HA HA.

Not only was the dress bad, but the hair and make up were awful. She looked like she had no lips, and her mouth is so distinctive, she should have played it up. Just bad.

  4. Nev says:

Yayyyy Maura!!!!! She’s great in the show.

  5. smcollins says:

I think Taraji looked beautiful. And she was definitely more than a little tipsy by the time she won, but not embarrassingly so! Also, am I the one who noticed her super hard posing on the red carpet? I thought she was going to pull something. She seemed to be having a good time, though, so can’t fault her for that. 😉

  6. AlmondJoy says:

Taraji is so pretty. I usually hate her styling, and her eyebrows have been pissing me off for over a decade now, but I can’t help but love her.

I also love how in her speech she mentioned that out of all the wonderful roles she’s played over the years, she never thought she would win for playing a woman who went to jail for selling drugs. But that’s Hollywood for ya!

  7. Nikki says:

Taraji DID look bridal, but still was lovely! Natalie’s dress was my least favorite look. The red draping across the top drooped down and dragged everything down, and the design thickened her waistline. Ugh. Imagine how great she would’ve looked if that black neckline had continued into a fitted, sleek black gown: so my ch more her style than that mishmosh dress. the top half of Laverne cox’ dress looked like an 80’s tennis dress; disliked that neckline. I LOVED the top color of Maura Tierney’s dress on her, but her jewelry pieces don’t look well together OR complement the dress. And she couldn’t have taken off her glasses instead of saying, “I’m such a four eyes!” ! I love her though and am reimagining her outfit with different jewelry. Just ADORE that color on her though.

  8. Wentworth Miller says:

    Laverne and Taraji both beautiful

  9. QQ says:

Haha I Love her, The Hard Posing and the dress.. And Laverne’s Too!! I skipped the show this year completely but im happy Maura won cause The Affair is TRULY such a well done show! This season was delicious with the extra POVs of The wronged spouses

    • Kitten says:

I’m bummed about what they did with the Noah character though. I enjoyed having mixed feelings about him throughout the first season but the second season made me absolutely hate him with a passion.

My fave episode of S2 was when we see Helen’s cool, calm exterior crack and she basically loses her sh*t. She played that scene where she’s getting trashed on wine while listening to Lucinda Williams so perfectly. Everything about that, right down to the point where she impulsively downs an edible was so genius and I can’t imagine any other actress doing it as well as Tierney did.

  10. Lambda says:

Taraji’s make up was bad, Klingon contouring and scary eyebrows. But I definitely like her posing.

  11. Kate says:

Taraji is gorgeous and I’m glad that she won. But I’m sorry…I just think she comes off repeatedly like an arrogant a-hole. Yes, I know she’s just being true to herself but that doesn’t make her less rude. If certain other celebs acted like this they would be raked over the coals for their behavior. She seems to be given a “pass” despite the fact that her she’s consistently rude and clearly has an ego the size of Texas. She’s a beautiful and talented woman but I can’t stand her. She seems like a jerk.

    • Rockin Robin says:

I agree. Her behavior during that speech was absolutely awful. I felt like she acted the pure stereotype of those “roles” she played. She destroyed her moment. Smh.

    • JenniferJustice says:

Me too. I used to be a fan, but this new-found fame has definitely gone to her head and so gone too are the days of humble Teraji which was who I liked. She is arrogant now and smug. That thing with her kid and racism accusation, the posing, getting drunk when she knew she was winning an award, the plastic surgery, etc. She thinks she’s really something now, but all I’ve seen lately is her acting loud and trashy.

    • word says:

I have to agree about her speech. I was hoping she’d saying something more heartfelt. I was hoping she wouldn’t embarrass herself but she SURE did. She’s not the only celeb that embarrassed themselves last night though.

    • AlmondJoy says:

I’m torn on this. I expected a better speech from her as well, Word. But Kate, Rockin and JenJustice: would you have preferred for Taraji to put on a whole new personality for the awards show? Taraji has always been loud and brash, and over the top. That’s just her. She’s also confident in her abilities and she always has been. But she’s also know for being really sweet to fans and would do anything for those she loves. I like that she’s real. She doesn’t put on airs. And she apologizes when she’s wrong, like the situation with her son. I guess she’s one of those people you either love or hate.

      • Fran says:

AlmondJoy – It’s not always “putting on a new personally” it’s called having class. I get that she plays it up for entertainment value, but it’s still rude. I’m sure everyone wanted to give longer speeches. I’m sure many other actresses wouldn’t have shouted at someone to get off their train. And if another celebrity DID pull the antics that Taraji tends to.. They’d be put on blast. Look at how hard people are on Lea Michele for her try hard posing. Now imagine if she had half of the brashness Taraji does. It wouldn’t stand. I’m not saying Taraji needs a huge reality check or anything, she just needs to tone it down. This wasn’t just her night, it was a lot of peoples. And she rightfully deserves the recognition for her obvious talent, I just wish she’d be a little bit more likable along the way.

  12. Rockin Robin says:

Taraji’s speech was tacky and dreadful. She was so drunk. I am happy for her and her message, but a little more class was needed.

  13. SamiHami says:

Love that red on Dormer, but the gown is a mess. It’s a shame, she’s a very pretty, quirky looking woman. In the right gown she would just kill it.

  14. minx says:

lol at Dormer’s expression. It’s like she’s looking in a mirror and seeing how horrible the dress is.

  15. MickeyM says:

Totally agreed on all counts. Dormer’s dress was terrible – why did that happen? Also re: the Affair. A friend recommended it to me last week, and I LOVE that show. Maura Tierney is impeccably relatable in that role. Don’t know who reads these comments but if it’s Kaiser: PLEASE COVER MORE OF ALL RELATED to “The AFFAIR.” Kay. Plug done. Thanks.

  16. Rainbow says:

    Taraji looks great.
Natalie’s dress is terrible. She looks like she has an underwear on her neck. Awful.

  17. Dena says:

Why are none of the women wearing lipstick? Both Maura and Lady Gaga need *something* on their lips other than that awful nude shade.

  18. me says:

Anyone else agree that Empire is not that great this season? Season one was really good. Interesting story lines and fast paced. This season is super slow and nothing that interesting going on. The ratings have gone down and I can see why. I think this happens when a show gets super successful quickly, writers, etc. start slacking thinking the viewers will stay. This has happened to many shoes. Let’s hope the writing improves.

Taraji, though I’m happy she won, made a fool of herself up there on that stage. My God.

  19. Diva says:

She looked great and I’m glad she’s finally getting recognized for her talent.

  20. FF says:

Bridal? Yes. But both Laverne and Taraji can definitely carry it off.

Not sure what’s going on with Natalie Dormer’s face though. She looks like the life is being sucked out of her. Bad diet?

  21. MB says:

I have seen a lot of photos of Natalie Dormer and she is pulling a funny face in each and every one of them. She looks bad – the dress, the hair, the makeup, the posing, the facial expressions. Not a great night for her.

I love Taraji and think she looks amazing, but agree that her attitude sometimes lets her down.

  22. KCat says:

    She looks great

  23. Dani says:

Oh, Taraji. She was a hot mess at the GG’s. That try-hard posing… her messy hair, which needed a quick run-through with a brush… that speech and yelling at the guy to get off her train… I’m pretty sure she was drunk or high af.

  24. cd3 says:

Oh my God, I love Laverne’s look. Wow, just wow.
She even matched her emerald green nail polish perfectly with her other accessories.
