Kim Kardashian is the new ambassador for Atkins, she wants to lose 40 lbs

I totally forgot this happened, but after Kim Kardashian gave birth to North West, she announced that she went on the Atkins Diet and that was one of the ways she lost the “baby weight” with North. For the uninitiated, Atkins was a really popular diet program in the 1990s and early 2000s, especially popular amongst celebrities because they would deliver chef-prepared meals to clients. The basic concept behind Atkins is low-carb, high-protein, although the diet has been tweaked over the years. Still, Atkins isn’t really the “it diet” anymore. The people running the Atkins empire are looking to rebrand it for a new generation. Which is how Kim Kardashian has become the new brand ambassador for Atkins.

So, she says she gained 60 pounds during her second pregnancy plus she was carrying 10 extra pounds pre-pregnancy, so she wants to lose 70 pounds overall and she’s already knocked out 30 pounds. So… 40 pounds to go. One of the criticisms of Atkins was that the diet was basically only a short-term solution, and very few people could adhere to such a strict low-carb diet long-term. People could and did lose weight in the first six months, then they would either plateau or gain the weight back. My guess is that Kim is not using Atkins as a long-term solution but merely as a quick scheme to lose baby weight in a few months (with the help of lipo, probably). But she’ll still cash the checks from Atkins, I’m sure.

Also: Alyssa Milano was just talking about how she’s an ambassador for Atkins too. Ruh-roh!

She’ll lose the weight, and get pregnant again, gain it all back, rinse and repeat. Must be exhausting being her.

    • qwerty says:

She’ll also screw up her health in the process. She already has an autoimmune disease, the last thing she needs is bacon. Dr Atkins looked like a picture of health too… http://media.al.com/spotnews/photo/12481049-large.jpg

    • Jwoolman says:

I think she’ll make Kanye get pregnant if he wants another one…. Really, all her dramatic, inconsistent, and unbelievable claims about every possible pregnancy complication were undoubtedly a strong message to Kanye that this was the last one. And all her drama over non-existent fertility problems was likewise to cover for gender selection, guaranteeing a boy. Kanye wanted a son, and he was insisting that they keep trying until they got one. So she loaded the dice.

    Why not Alyssa Milano?
I didn’t read the story, I just saw the heading n commented.

I known two people who got gout while on Atkins. I was so surprised that gout hadn’t gone out with Henry VIII, but apparently not. I think they were both overdoing the protein, but still, I would be careful with it.

    • Tiffany27 says:

@GNAT I’m sorry, but what is Gout?

    • Lorn says:

I know somebody who got gout on Atkins too! I thought it was just him. Guess not. Yikes!

    • qwerty says:

Animal products feed the inflammation in your body. Cancer too.

My friend went on a high-protein diet and ended up pissing blood.

      • Becky says:

Gout is usually caused by overindulgence and alcohol consumption, but it’s also associated with fast weight loss. With Atkins the advice is to drink a lot of water to clear the uric acid out of your system.

There’s a theory that sugar is also related to cancer, because of obesity and higher risk, but also because it’s been found that tumours feed off glucose. This was discovered by studies into the keto diet for epilepsy treatment which also restricts carbs.

      • Belle Epoch says:

Atkins himsrlf had terrible heart problems. He died of a heart attack, then fell down – so his business tried to pass it off as a fall. Very high protein diets are murder on the kidneys, plus your body leeches calcium from your bones to try to make up for acid level. Cholesterol is a fake problem. Inflammation is a huge problem. You can lose weight with Atkins, but it is not healthy!

    • Size Does Matter says:

      Gout, huh? No bueno.

Harvest Trail Bars – bought some this week. They taste great but they’re tiny. Everyone save your money and eat an apple.

    • AG-UK says:

My friends did Atkins years ago lost weight but had high cholesterol after. No thanks.. I fast 2 days that works for me.

    • swak says:

I know many people who have had gout. But, isn’t 17 of that 30 she lost just from having the baby (baby weight, water weight, placenta, etc)? So really she has only lost 13 more than she had already boasted about.

    • Kat says:

Atkins is a nightmare for your health. The notion of people being stupid enough to omit fruits and some vegetables on the basis that they contain too much sugar, and then to replace produce with cholesterol-laden foods, is pretty infuriating! Back in the early 2000s I had peers and classmates who were on the Atkins bandwagon, and none of them could put two and two together and figure out why they were:

      -constipated all the time
      -exhausted
      -smelly (from really foul breath)
      -sore in the joint areas

Can we also at least recognise that Atkins is an unsustainable diet that won’t work in the long-term and pumps more money into inhumane factory farms? Who am I kidding though, as if Kim Kardashian ever had a social conscience. Gah!

      • Jwoolman says:

Well, realistically, Kimmie is going to really lose the weight via surgery and liposuction. I would have thought she already did it, but maybe the doctor had an attack of sanity and told her to wait. Atkins is just a smokescreen.

  4. minx says:

The basic Atkins principle has been around for decades; I tried it in the 70s and you do lose weight quickly. But like any diet that isn’t balanced you feel deprived. I craved carbs so badly that I ate them like a maniac.

    • mp says:

The science shows that human bodies need carbohydrates for brain and nerve MAINTENANCE and REPAIR. I have worked with many a person with anorexia/restrictive eating who had nerve issues from eating low-carb. The body will began to cannibalize itself if you don’t eat all the things – fat, protein, AND carbs. Truly. Being on a diet that cuts out fat or carbs can really ruin you over the long-term. I wish my clients could do PSAs on the danger of restricting carbs or fat.

      • Katie says:

My dietician told me the very same thing when I was diagnosed with diabetes related to cystic fibrosis. She told me not to go with the any diet that restricted any foods other than added sugars, processed foods.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too, minx, except it was Scarsdale, but same low carb thing. I ended up eating an entire box of Dixie Snack Crackers, which I don’t even like.

  5. Jwoolman says:

Weren’t the Kardashians peddling their own weight loss supplement?

  6. Kelly says:

No way she gained 60 lbs.

  7. Jwoolman says:

Hopefully she’s counting the weight of the baby and fluids that she lost soon after birth in that 30 pounds figure, or else she’s losing at a very unhealthy pace. Hasn’t it only been less than seven weeks since the birth? Someone her size probably shouldn’t be losing more than about one pound per week, two pounds max (but not for long).

    • Mare says:

She didn’t lose the weight. She had it sucked out.

    • Guest455 says:

Every woman is different after pregnancy. I gained 45 pounds with both of my kids (each weighed around 7.5 pounds at birth) and all of the weight just came off in about 3 weeks each time. I was breastfeeding and eating like crazy at the time because I was so hungry.

  8. littlemissnaughty says:

I can’t do low carb, I’m just not made for it. I also don’t like meat and a veggie Atkins sounds awful. Also, HER FACE! It gets me every time.

  9. Lbliss says:

Sure. She will lose 40 lbs through the “Atkins diet”. Atkins is probably her surgeon’s name.

  10. missmerry says:

“My guess is that Kim is not using Atkins as a long-term solution but merely as a quick scheme to lose baby weight in a few months”

My guess would be that she’s used to people telling her what to do and prepping her food for her, so why not get paid for that too?

she’s so awful, and I heard that people have heart attacks on that diet (not sure if it’s true or a concern for most). I don’t wish a heart attack on her, just sayin’

  11. Cupcake says:

I’d lose 40 lbs if someone is willing to endorse it, Atkins or really any company that wanted to give me $$$! I really don’t think she’ll go through another pregnancy. They have a girl and a boy and it’s “perfect.” They might use a surrogate or adopt ala Angelina Jolie, but now it’s time for Kim to focus on her body being “perfect.”

  12. Ang says:

Lies and more lies, she’s probably already had the first round of lipo, since second birth. Plus much more surgeries to come.

  13. clarencebeeks says:

EVERYTHING is about her body. Could she perhaps talk about the importance of being a mother? Nooooooooo, because she is so superficial. Those poor kids will never know what it is like to be loved selflessly by a parent.

  14. H says:

I eat the Atkins microwave dinners at least 3-4 times a week. I love them. After years of being a vegetarian, I’m going for high protein meals. However, I supplement the meals with carbs. Atkins Orange Chicken, which is sooo yummy, then I add rice. Some of their Italian meals, I add pasta.

But I’m not using Atkins to lose weight, I like their taste compared to Weight Watchers and other similar meals.

This family thinks youth and beauty are achievements.

  16. Tammy White says:

I’m on the South Beach Diet…it’s similar to Atkins. There are no carbs or sugar first two weeks & then you gradually add good carbs back in. I’m very tired but that’s it. You can lose weight on these diets & keep them off but you can’t go back to the eating habits that put you into the position where you are dieting. I ate too many cookies & crap & needed a reset button.

  17. me says:

This woman really thinks she’s the center of the universe doesn’t she? Yes Kim we are all holding our breath in anticipation of your big “post baby bod” reveal.

She makes her money off of lies. I don’t believe a word she says.

  18. Moochiemom says:

Omg so she chooses Atkins, the diet she will never ever stick to. She has personal chefs available and a home gym and can’t hide out till a body reveal? Jesus, was the prenup, with Kanye that harsh? With small changes to my diet I lost 25 lbs in 3 months. Not fast enough for a news cycle I guess. Shame on you, media whore

  19. msw says:

I love Atkins. I had a metabolic disorder and really needed to get my weight under control. Low-fat didn’t work for me. I needed a high fat, low carb diet to get my cravings under control and feel satisfied. I still ate vegetables and fruit and those are, in fact, allowed on the diet. I hate seeing people criticize low carb and Atkins in particular without knowing what the diet actually recommends. It is the only way I can eat healthfully and still feel satisfied. I still Layton vegetables and fruit and those are, in fact, allowed on the diet. Atkins probably saved me from developing type to diabetes. I continue to eat this way most of the time and feel a lot more comfortable that way. After a couple months, my blood pressure went down, my cholesterol is better, and no gout or gall bladder issues or anything like that for me. Maybe it doesn’t work for everybody, but two doctors recommended I try it, and I’m so glad I did. It’s been a year and a half and I lost 40 pounds, which is still off.

    • KiddVicious says:

I could have written this. Atkins literally saved my life. I was vegan, miserable and sick before I started Atkins. I was so immersed in the vegan propaganda that I did believe I would die if I tried Atkins (OMG! MEAT! The Horror!) but I wasn’t living well eating vegan either, so why not give it a try. After the first week I was on cloud 9 and feeling great. It took about 3 months before all of my blood work was at healthy levels. I’m a low-carber for life.

  20. Trixiebelle says:

Oh she’ll lose the weight … IF YOU PAY her for it.
