Olivia Wilde shuts down baby rumor with her sense of humor

New York premiere of 'Vinyl'

When you’re a star, tabloid speculation on your personal life is just part of the stardom package. Celebs have lots of ways to diffuse these rumors, but no one does it with a hilariously cheeky edge than Olivia Wilde.

When the 31-year-old actress and her fiancé Jason Sudeikis hit the red carpet for her new HBO series Vinyl last week, rumors began to fly that their one-year-old son, Otis Alexander, might have a new sibling on the way. The rumors were ignited by photos of Olivia in her stunning black Valentino gown, a gown that some members of the media felt was a cover up for an upcoming arrival. Star Magazine published one of the photos with a story entitled “Baby on Board?” and asked the (somewhat tasteless) question, “bump or burger?” Olivia took to her Twitter account to dispel the rumors in the best possible way. She posted the article with the caption, “Sorry, Star mag, but you got us confused with the cooler version of us. Congrats to John and Emily! My bump is all [burger emoji.]” She, of course, is referring to another perfectly matched (and gorgeous) Hollywood couple, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, who recently announced that they are expecting their second child.

Seems like some of the tabloids definitely jumped the gun on this one. There was no baby bump to be seen in other photos taken of her at the event. Jason even channeled his inner paparazzo and took some photos of her on the red carpet and there’s no bump (or burger) visible.

I love how Olivia handled this whole situation. I have been a fan of hers since she was on House and Jason always slayed me with his track suit-clad B-boy dancer on SNL. Sense of humor is so important in a relationship and it seems like these two have it in spades. And, I’m sure there are legitimate baby bumps coming their way in their future.

Who calls their kid ‘Otis’ anyway?

Seriously loled at the bump or burger question. Who gets paid to come up with this stuff?

    • Locke Lamora says:

I think it’s a cute name, but it’s bad combined with the surname.

    • Nikki says:

hey, Otis is a real name, unlike naming your kid after a fruit or direction. No shade for Otis in my book ( we named our rescue mutt Otis!)

    • Katie says:

I love it! Otis is a cute name

      • Esmom says:

It reminds me of Otis Spofford, which my kids loved reading, so I have a soft spot for the name. Not enough to use it, though.

    • redpromise says:

her child is named after otis redding. A legendary musician, have yourself a listen.

    • Penelope says:

The name Otis reminds me of the town drunk on The Andy Griffith Show!

I realize Otis Redding is a super-cool person to honor, but I just cannot stand the name. Someone here at work named their son Otis as well, and another guy said it was on the short list for their newbie, too. It’s become trendy.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

It was a good way to handle it ( silence would have been better, IMO), but it wasn’t really funny, was it? And I usually do find Olivia quite amusing.
She’s such a stunning woman, but that gown was bad.

    • vauvert says:

Eh, good on her for shutting it down in a funny way.
That gown stunning??? Yikes, it’ s from the Morticia house of fashions, absolutely terrible….

    • Penelope says:

I thought it was funny and showed class.

  3. Esmom says:

That really was a tasteless headline. Nice that she didn’t overreact. Her characterization of Emily B and John K and a “cooler version” of them is a little odd, imo.

    • minx says:

I took it as a cute compliment to John and Emily.

      • Erinn says:

I thought it was amusing – and clearly they’re friends or she wouldn’t have said it.

      • Esmom says:

I think it’s complimentary, I got that. I just find it odd that they would compare themselves at all. What’s the comparison based on? Their careers, their kids…I know I’m reading too much into it, lol. 🙂

    • Really says:

I always get them confused with Emily and John, glad she pointed it out! Or rather, I get Olivia and Emily confused and I can never remember who married which guy. But love both couples.

  4. Nikki says:

SO glad I’m not a celebrity: Bump or Buffet Behemoth..

    • Lucy2 says:

Lol me too. There would always be constant speculation that I was five or six months along!

    • Esmom says:

My old boss tended to carry her weight in her stomach and she would be asked all the time if she was pregnant. I would be secondhand mortified for both her and the people who were crass enough to ask. Especially as she neared 50!

    • Meghan says:

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and a co-worker was all “you’re really beginning to show!” and my response was “I’m pretty sure I am just gassy.” Half the time I don’t know if I’m just bloated or really starting to have a baby bump.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She looks beautiful in that dress and not at all pregnant. I hate pregnancy speculation and expressions like “bump,” but I guess they are here to stay. I think her response was better than anger, but I agree with Locke Lamora that no response was necessary.

  6. meg says:

again, women’s bodies are critiqued-they have to justify how they look for others. it’s just infuriating. what if she’d had a burger? her body her choice to gain weight. what if she was pregnant and not ready to tell yet, what if she’d gone through numerous miscarriages and wanted to wait until after the first trimester? someone’s body is so, so personal, but people continue to treat women’s bodies like public property

  7. Nev says:

    Sudeikis is yum.

    • lizzie says:

i totally agree. he also has a great voice. have you seen sleeping with other people? there are two scenes near the end where he literally made my heart ache.

  8. MsGoblin says:

I remember when my jawline was that sharp. Sigh…..

  9. Lucy says:

This made me laugh because I always used to get John and Jason mixed up, not because they look like each other (which they don’t) but because I used to think it was John Olivia was married to, for some reason! Haha.

  10. nicegirl says:

I find them both so, so very attractive. And hilarious.

  11. Penelope says:

I thought she showed class and humor in handling the situation. And they clearly don’t take themselves too seriously, a rarity in Hollywood.

  12. annna says:

Never understood Jason’s appeal. Will Forte and Bill Hader are much more talented than him yet he’s the one that gets leading man work. He always looks so smug.

  13. BJ says:

There are pictures where Emily and Olivia looking like sisters, so that’s that. And yeah John could look a little bit like Jason, so I dig the comparison.
I have the sense that she is like this humble, She consistantly makes fun of her forehead and jawline too. If this is her real personality, then it’s a major plus point in my book.
