Laverne Cox in Prabal Gurung at the SAGs: glamorous or poorly draped?

22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals
Laverne Cox was one of several women in on-trend red last night. She was in this exquisitely draped Prabal Gurung gown, which looked incredible on camera. Then I saw the side view with the high thigh slit under the cape and I’m side eyeing it now. I guess it only shows when she’s pushing the skirt to the side and posing to let us see it, and I can’t decide whether it’s too superhero. She’s pulling a Jolie and doing it with humor. I love the bodice with the slight cutout leading down to the flowing gown.

Cox’s show Orange is the New Black won Outstanding Performance for Ensemble in a Comedy for the second year in a row. When Laura Prepon was accepting the award on behalf of the cast, she said “Look at this stage! This is what we talk about, when we talk about diversity! Different race, color, creed, sexual orientation.” There were plenty of noms for other actors of color, with Idris Elba taking home two awards, and both Viola Davis and Uzo Aduba winning in their categories. The SAGs made the Oscars look hopelessly out of touch.

Here’s Tina Fey, also in red Prabal Gurung, with less success. This dress has that terrible darting around the boobs which makes it look like Dior Prada, and it’s very plain. Fey likes simple gowns, it’s just that this one isn’t that great. I like the skirt but the top is so blah.

Anna Faris really rocked this red Naeem Khan gown with a folded collar, red short sleeves and a high leg slit. Her 60s styling complete with updo complements the look perfectly. This is glamour.

Melissa Rauch was in a more orange-red Romona Keveza with an asymmetric cutout neckline and back. This is a gorgeous gown with just the right balance of classic and contemporary. I really like this look.

I thought Anna Faris was Emma Stone. Anyways, I love her dress.
Tina Fey looks great as well.

I thought Tina looked amazing on all the pics I saw before I saw this one. The boob darts never showed on them. Weird. And yes, Anna’s dress is simply gorgeous.

      • coconut says:

Tina’s dress shows how a simple but excellently fitting/tailored dress can really wow. I love it.

    • Ingrid says:

Tina looked BEAUTIFUL. like sure in some lights the darts looked strange but most of the photos show it’s tailored really well. she hasn’t overdone the hair and make up and lets the colour speak for itself. Tina Fey is #goals

  2. CornyBlue says:

Anna Faris looks so damn amazing! I thought that was Emma Stone at first though

    • teacakes says:

Me too, at first glance I assumed she was Emma Stone. But she looks amazing, I love that her dress has that cool neckline – A++++ to the designer and Anna (and Anna’s stylist) for that one.

    • whatthe says:

On the US Weekly site you can see that Anna and Brie Larsen didn’t bother to get pedicures. Larsen’s feet look like she walked from NYC to LA.

      • Rainbow says:

I noticed that too about Larsen’s toes , but i thought it was the pics. They looked really dirty and choped. Which is weird because you get all glammed up and you show up with dirty toes?

  3. NewWester says:

Is it the lighting that is making Tina Fey’s dress look so odd? The colour seems odd around the waist. Very washed out

  4. Kristen says:

You can’t say Tina’s boob darts look bad and then say Anna Faris looks great. Her bodice is lumpier and more jacked-up looking than Tina’s.

  5. dr mantis toboggan says:

I’m usually not a fan of showing too much on the red carpet but I can’t help it, Laverne looks fantastic. I love the colour, the cape – it’s a stunning dress. A couple of tweaks at the front and it could be perfect

  6. Sisi says:

“This dress has that terrible darting around the boobs which makes it look like Dior”
Prada is the one with darting issues, right?

I think Laverne’s dress suffers from very poor draping technniques. Draping should look soft, organic, and unworked. Here everything is pulled tight, forces into directions and you can even see where the stitches are.
    Lovely color though.

Does Melissa wear reflective fabric that causes that light spot on her butt or is it my screen?

  7. Mia V. says:

Melissa should teach class to Kaley Cuoco.

    • lilacflowers says:

I thought the same thing when I saw Melissa on the red carpet last night while Kaley was being interviewed in that black bandage thingie. Melissa in motion was even more stunning.

  8. Savina says:

Anna did look great. Tina wasn’t bad I think she just isn’t comfortable with the type of glamour dresses needed for these shows.

  9. uninspired username says:

    I looooove Laverne’s dress.

  10. Carmen says:

Rauch and Ana Faris, two thumbs up. Everybody else, thumbs down.

  11. Luxe says:

Laverne reminds me of glamorous Old Hollywood movie stars when she’s on the red carpet. I love what she has on here.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think they all look nice. Anna Faris was my favorite.

  13. Sarah01 says:

Love Anna’s dress it fits her so well. She looks the best of this bunch.

  14. Lucy says:

All of them looked lovely in my opinion. MY favorite’s Anna too!

  15. Amanda G says:

    Anna Faris looks gorgeous!

  16. Cupcake says:

Laverne looks very thirsty in this dress but she is so beautiful so it’s hard for her to go wrong. I’m going with B for LC. Tina’s dress looks very prom gown and the rolled collar and sleeves on Anna’s dress make it a miss for me.

  17. Bridget says:

Tina has done so many awards shows for so long, that I’m guessing that she just chooses something easy when she’s not nominated or hosting. Makes sense – you don’t want to pull out the big guns every single time.

  18. Mar says:

    Laverne nailed Beyonce! Twins!

  19. ell says:

isk why people are saying anna faris looks amazing. she had so much stuff done to her face she doesn’t even look like herself anymore, she looks like emma stone!

  20. kri says:

Melissa and Anna are both great. Anna’s styling is on point.

  21. Pansy says:

Anna’s styling was perfect!! Love the bones of 50’s/60’s fashion. Laverne reminds me of a fitness model all dressed up. Like what Jillian Michaels (or me if I were a fitness model and didn’t just finish queso and chips) would wear. Not as tailored as I’d prefer. But rocking body.

  22. Pmnichols says:

    Anna Faris rocked it!!

  23. Lucy2 says:

I kind of like all of these books. Laverne’s would be a bit much on most other people, but she pulls it off well. I think she has that Charlize Theron quality of being able to pull off very dramatic and sculptural looks.

  24. Steph S says:

Anna’s dress looks like it’s on backward. I don’t understand the love for her in general – she’s a terrible actress and not at all funny (IMO).

  25. serena says:

I love love love Anna Faris’s whole look, gorgeous dress and styling! The others are kind of meh, I expected more of Laverne Cox (she usually brings it, style-wise), but the color looked nice on her that’s all I’ll say.

  26. Holmes says:

I wish Laverne wasn’t posing so hard. She doesn’t need to–she is gorgeous and she looks great!

I LOVE the idea of Anna’s dress but I wish it fit better–it’s way too big on her.

  27. Careygloss says:

Cox looks great in it, but we’ve got to get one thing straight: Jolie did NOT carry any humor over her dress situation. She was so serious it hurt. That’s what started the memes. 🙂
