The Walking Dead ‘do you want to tell me about your day?’ (spoilers)

The following post contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Walking Dead
After last week’s explosive action-filled Walking Dead midseason premiere, this week was positively staid. There was some minor action, the introduction of a new character and a new power couple! This episode jumped ahead two months after the massive zombie torching to reveal that Michonne is living with Rick, Carl and Judith and that Carl has recovered from getting his eye shot out. There’s no word as to how all those piles of zombie bodies were disposed of, nor do we learn about Rick and Michonne’s intimate living situation – until the end of the episode when they hook up. It’s presented as the first time they get busy as there’s some awkward hand-holding preceding it. (You can read a full recap on AMC’s site.)

Some twitter users are questioning why Rick was so quick to find another girlfriend, but it’s been two months since Jessie died. We know the timeline because Danai Gurira was on Talking Dead last night (Nathan Fillion was the other guest) and said that the group has been able to settle and get toward a sense of normalcy in the interim. On Talking Dead, Gurira explained why she thought this was the time for Rick and Micchone to hookup. #Richonne!

These are two characters that are not going to fall for each other until they really have, they’re not going to preconceive it so it really has to be the right moment. I think this episode was definitely that moment because they actually had time to be mundane, to like live in those just day to day details that you miss when you don’t get to have them. They got to settle in and have some domesticity.

Gurira also explained that Michonne has always lived in the house with Rick and Carl, in the downstairs bedroom while Rick was upstairs. She said her character went through “a lot of moments that allow her to become more emotionally available” after all the trauma she’s had in her life. The catalyst to allowing Michonne to open up, according to Gurira, was finding zombie Deanna and helping her son, Spencer, put his mother to rest (apparently Deanna helped Michonne figure out what she wants) and also talking to Carl on the porch. She said that Rick had changed too, and was “embracing people” and really listening to them, which is something Michonne had been pushing him to do. She joked that “women always want to see a man change” and later said “it really felt like the right place for them to end up.”

They had Andrew Lincoln on in a pretaped interview and he said after reading the script with Rick’s hookup with Michonne he thought “my mom is going to be so thrilled.” He added that “it was such a great episode to shoot. We did the kiss scene and after I did the kiss I went ‘it’s a lot more fun working with you than Norman.'”

After hearing Gurira explain it like that, I’m not as against this hookup as I first was. It makes a lot of sense for the characters in that they grew into a romance. Still, I’m worried for Walking Dead. #Richonne could easily be a “jump the shark” moment. What’s next, couples dates with Abraham and Rosita? (How did that reunion go anyway?)

As for the new character, Jesus, he has some incredible combat and escape skills and he’s sneaky and crafty with a sense of righteousness. I can see him becoming an asset to the group.

  1. Pinky says:

    Richonne for eva!!!

I no longer have to get my fix from fan fiction.

(BTW, did they use body double for when they were pointing their weapons at Jesus?)

    -TheRealPinky

    • Rachel says:

No. They didn’t. Danai was talking about it on The Talking Dead afterward.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@the real pinky – hey now! Got any links to this fan fiction? ๐Ÿ˜Š

      • Pinky says:

On the Web site “Archive of Our Own,” look for “The Walking Dead (TV)” under “Fandoms,” and on the sidebar you can select “Rick Grimes/Michonne” under “Relationships.” There’s some steamy stuff there! Some re-a-a-ally good. Others not so much, but it’s pretty fun! Thinking of joining in and writing a coupleโ€ฆ.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@ the Real Pinky – thanks, luv! โ˜บ๏ธ

    • Abbess Tansy says:

@TheRealPinky – I know how you feel, I’ve been waiting for this ship to happen on the show for the last couple of years. Finally!
LOL at the body double comment.

  2. cat says:

They have always lived in the same home. Unless I am mistaken Carol and perhaps Daryl also live in that house. Now that 90% of town were killed, maybe Carol and Daryl live elsewhere. Eugene make a comment earlier this season about turning the church, into a work area, due to lack of space.

    • ItHappenedOneNight says:

Correct. I seem to recall that they all stayed together because they were used to staying with one another “outside” and could not get used to being apart.

  3. Nameless says:

Isn’t she the Andrea of the comic book? I stopped reading them but apparently this is no surprise to comic book readers because Rick and Andrea hook up around this time.

    • QQ says:

it is, I figured they’d sub for her IF indeed they had the Balls to go through with it…. Which … Half heartedly they did… which is hilarious to me cause yesterday by the second commercial break I said: no You Know what?? I’m DONE with This f*cking show, Done for good Done, Like Lemme go to bed, I’m too high

then my BF informed me that they went for it for reals, and I touched his face and said: MMkkay baby, i’m still not watching ever again if I get tired, I’m done

      • richonne4eva says:

I loved the scene when they hooked up, I thought it was natural and realistic. The term they used for it on The Talking Dead was great…apocalypse and chill instead of Netflix and chill.

Your decision to stop watching for reasons unclear is your choice, though I have a feeling TWD will go on without your viewership. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. FingerBinger says:

That was like watching the 3 stooges. They find a truck it gets stolen. They get it back then it sinks to the bottom of a lake. It was a comedy of errors. Michonne is too good for Rick. However I do like her relationship with Carl.

    • Mgsota says:

Lmao…that sums it up perfectly. After chasing the truck down, finally getting it back only to have it sink to the bottom of the lake! I was like really?! How cute was Daryl trying to get that “pop” for what’s her name. That was so damn cute. And I’m all for this hook up! And I’m sure at this point they genuinely love each other.
People need to be getting busy in times like that. It’s the only thing to look forward to!

    • Rachel says:

Excellent description. My husband was absolutely disgusted with they ways they went about everything. All for a #$%^%^&$%^ orange crush! That’s not even good soda! They should know better by now. I wonder if living in Alexandra has made them soft. Not as paranoid and vigilant as they had been.

I have been an avid TWD fan from the beginning. And I will be the first to admit, I am a hard-hearted person. But that scene with Spencer and Deanna was the first time the show has brought me to tears.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Oooo Rachel, I am so pissed about the truck too. Loads of food & supplies. Sunk.

I dunno though – last night, Orange Crush on ice sounded good to me lol

      • Rachel says:

I know. I’m a coke girl, but in the zombie apocalypse, I’d probably accept that orange crush as manna from heaven. I’d run around looking for any type of soda I could get my hands on, like Woody Harrelson with his twinkies.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Hehe! And they always look thirsty to me. All that running around in the heat. I’d probably even welcome a Tab soda…anyone remember those?

  5. Nancy says:

Jesus is going to be an interesting character. He is such a badass with a good heart in the comic book. Hate, hate, hate what Rick did last night. I realize twitter was ablaze with delight at the hookup, but I thought it was gross. Jessie died two months ago, so of course he’s ready to move on, geez. It was nothing but a comfort fu!k. I like Michonne for the warrior she is, but come on now, really…although it was funny when they both jumped out of bed when Jesus stormed in. All in all, boring episode. They did it all last week.

    • nay says:

      What?
Rick’s hookup with Jesse came out of nowhere and there was no chemistry but he and Michonne were circling each other since season 3.

      • Nancy says:

Not a Michonne fan, although the woman is a warrior, I’ll give her that. I see zero chemistry between her and Rick…..I think it’s all for the fans. Don’t know what’s in the comic book about them, but I’m sure someone will fill me in.

      • Rachel says:

And they never even really hooked up. He kissed Jessie a couple of times. They didn’t have any type of relationship.

For some reason, I thought the Rick/Michonne hookup was a foregone conclusion. I wasn’t surprised last night because I was certain I’d read they were already paired up in the comics, but is that not the case?

      • Mgsota says:

Not a Michonne fan?!?!?!! I just choked on my coffee.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@mgsota – exactly. One of my friends suddenly said the same thing. She doesn’t like Michonne & insists that “Michonne will be the end of Rick.” Huh??? She does not read the graphic novels & refuses to say anything else. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I guess I’m shocked everyone doesn’t love Michonne on the show. She’s incredible!

    • ell says:

“but I thought it was gross”

i don’t even ship them, but what was gross about it exactly?

      • Nancy says:

It’s a tv show folks, not all that serious. We all have our favorites. Mine is Daryl bc he’s just there to kill the zombies and aholes and once in awhile take off his shirt.

      • ell says:

it’s just a tv show, but the use of the word gross is really quite baffling. i have tons of notps, but the word ‘gross’ is something i would reserve for something actually gross. there was nothing gross about rick and michonne, even if you don’t like them.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Agree, Nancy – it’s a show. But you did say you hate hate hate what Rick did last night & that the Richonne hook-up was gross. So, now enquiring minds have ??? for you. Spill! Why do you hate hate hate it? Why gross?

Agree about Daryl. I find Rick extraordinarily hot too. I think TWD needs MORE SEX! ๐Ÿ˜„

      • Nancy says:

I love the adventure of the show, the whose going to do what next to survive. The only romance I enjoyed last night was the bromance between Rick and Daryl. They are funny together and Jesus is going to be a good addition. Sorry I couldn’t have a more salacious answer to your questions ADM and ell….like I said it’s tv, I have a sick kid puking in real life who needs me…..which might be the reason for the triple hate….long night

    • Babalon says:

      *side-eye*

      • pinkparasole says:

Double side-eye. People are really revealing themselves over this. Gross? LOL… I mean, I guess a sick kid would explain it.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@Nancy – I love the bromance too. Hope your kid is okay! And that the puking stops ASAP ๐Ÿ™

      • Nancy says:

Thanks sweetie, he seems to be getting a wee bit better, his sister started the show going…..oi…..toss me over a dirty martini, maybe toss isn’t the best word to use! P.S. – You have a good attitude…can disagree without attack mode. And that..ADM is rare these days ๐Ÿ™‚

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Aww, Nancy – thanks. Truly! You made my day. โ˜บ๏ธ We all have opinions – no reason to go nutso, right? There’s so much freakin’ hate in this world already. Ditto, btw – you remained very calm yourself ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay, I cracked up over the toss comment! I bet you need a dirty martini after a day like you had. I hope all the illness departs ASAP!

    • isabelle says:

He didn’t care about Jessie, he only wanted to have sex with her. He let her be walker bait and couldn’t have cared less. He made the decision allowing her to be killed by them. Come on its Rick he could have saved her. Can you imagine him making that same choice for Michonne? Jessie=future sex & flirtation only, Michonne= love.

      • tvwatcher says:

        @ isabelle.
I don’t think Jessie was ‘just potentional sex’ to the guy.

With that theory, you are reducing Rick Grimes to a misogynist, woman- using, self absorbed a-hole (more like one of the bad guys who originally attacked Terminus and attacked their women). I don’t see those qualities in him at all.

  6. Mia4s says:

The timing might be suspect for real life; but for the zombie apocalypse? Considering the mortality rate, emotions are heightened overall. I’d be on fast forward too! Plus they’ve been slow burn for awhile.

Rick and Darryl were kinda dumb last night, but adorable too so that can be forgiven. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

YES YES YES!! Am loving Richonne. Glad they waited. Now we need #Caryl – they can go on double dates together.

    • ell says:

we really don’t need caryl though.

    • kcarp says:

Why have always thought Daryl was gay? I always think of him as growing up and living in a very unsupported environment and he suppressed his feelings out of fear. Daryl becoming close with Aaron was a clue into his sexuality. I probably dreamed all of this up

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

@kcarp – there was talk of that. You didn’t dream it. The show runners brought it up a couple seasons ago maybe.. Then I saw an article that said Daryl is straight but has acted asexual so far. I saw a spark between him & Beth though.

  8. lowercaselois says:

Loved that Rick and Michonne hooked up. Jesus is going to be a fun character, because Daryl does not trust him. Daryl and Jesus will make a good dog and pony act for the show.

  9. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Btw, Michonne has always lived with the Grimes’

  10. JoJo says:

The Michonne living in the same house thing is not new. She has been in the same house with Rick and Carl and Judith since they got to Alexandria.

As for Rick and Michonne, YES!!!!’ So totally hot and sexy. I was completely taken by surprise, but it’s probably the only time in years when I was both blown away and shocked but also just sat back and said, “Wow, this makes total sense.” Rick was never in love with Jessie. She was just the first woman who helped him to open up after Laurie’s death. Michonne is going to reap the benefits of that. But she and Rick have so much more – they have mutual respect and love for each other already. They have gone to bat for each other in the worst of times. This is what makes them awesome – I’m completely in love with it. And it’s not going to be written as a fling, nor should it be. These two have something real but something they’re just realizing is there and it’s just blossoming. The real scary part is what this means for Michonne ultimately since Rick’s women usually end up dead. :/

  11. Dragonlady sakura says:

Soooo happy! From the minute RIck and Michonne held hands, I was screaming with glee. I don’t think the romance is sudden since she and Rick are very close friends and they’ve been flirting since forever! ๐Ÿ˜†

  12. ell says:

i don’t ship richonne (i can’t get invested in this show anymore, too much rinse and repeat, sometimes i fall asleep watching), but i’m happy they happened because they’ve been building up to that moment for seasons. and it was cute. now, if only they could write all episodes better it would be great.

  13. Delta Juliet says:

I think they make an excellent couple. It’s not like they just met; they’ve built a relationship of trust and respect over the seasons. Michonne looks after Rick’s kids as if they were her own. I mean, if anything felt forced, it was the whole thing with Jessie. He may have been hot for her, but nothing every really happened between them.

  14. Willa says:

    Coral! Lol!

  15. Marty says:

Been waiting for this since season 3, tbh. I loved the sweetness of the moment, the way they were both smiling at each other. It felt like a natural progression to their relationship.

  16. Madpoe says:

YES!! YES! Finally happened! Minty Fresh!
But first think I thought is whomever Rick fancies ends up dead tho’ :/

And totally loved the bromance with Rick and Darryl,
“MY gun!” and punches Jesus in the face. lmao.
Rick had a wicked one liners too.

  17. Carol says:

Can you imagine these characters doing an interview with US Weekly?

Q: So when did you guys know you were in love?
M: Well after the last zombie mashup, I knew Rick was the guy for me.
R: Nobody swings a sword like Michy over here. I just thought….she knows my family, she knows me. It was just…. you know. Amore.

  18. qtpi says:

I always felt like Rick and Michonne had a brother/sister relationship. This was never on my radar – perhaps because we only just lost his last love interest 1 week ago?

    • themummy says:

Except that he only kissed Jessie a few times and they didn’t really have chemistry or an actual relationship. It was sort of more still in the flirtation stage with them, it seemed.

      • tvwatcher says:

        @themummy
I can’t figure out why people keep saying that Rick kissing Jessie once or twice was no big deal. Before last night’s ep, Rick never kissed Michonne.

I always saw Rick and Michonne as friends, not as lovers. I don’t buy into that relationship. I don’t get any chemistry off Rick and Michonne. I find their (romantic) relationship to be cringe worthy.

I think TWD suffers when they pair people off romantically, unless the couple started out already established, such as Rick and Lori or Rosita and Abraham.

    • MinnFinn says:

Yes sibling comraderie. Also Rick’s previous two loves were 1960s housewifey types which is another reason why Richonne seem implausible.

  19. themummy says:

Ok, so a little beside the point, but has anyone else noticed that in the last couple of seasons Rick is careful to say “Carl” instead of “Coral”? I think maybe he saw all the memes…heheheh.

    Anyway, Go Richonne!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • pinkparasole says:

I miss CORAL. After all the gore at the prison, the last leg of that episode cracked me up.

  20. What's inside says:

I never understood the whole Jessie thing and the two whiner’s that were her kids. The writers brilliantly removed all of that with one fell swoop of the pen. Rick needs a warrior girlfriend in the post apocalyptic zombie world and Michonne is the baddest hot mamma jamma of them all at this time. So I’ll just get some popcorn and a coke and put my feet up to enjoy.

  21. Lynn says:

It was gross…I was cringing. I think they have ZERO chemistry – it was so awkward – they’re like brother and sister – I don’t get it. Why would anyone put these two together???

  22. Notafan2RickwMichonne says:

I like michonne as family, sister, or friend not a lover with Rick. Omg. WTF?
I literally barf because them having sex is that is like incest in a family. I thought it was very disturbing to see Rick go after her. What were you writers thinking?! What fans wanted them together? I sure as heck don’t. You guys ruined their relationship .

  23. Goodnight says:

So excited about Jesus because he’s my favourite comic character. He’s a great person and a total badass… plus he happens to be gay, which is an incidental part of his character but it’s pretty groundbreaking to have the hands-down best warrior in the group (he’s beaten both Rick and Michonne in the comics) be a gay guy.

I think they’ll nerf him so as not to outdo their pre-established badasses and probably won’t address him being gay, but I’m super happy to see him there nonetheless.

Michonne has always lived with Rick and Carl and Judith, yeah.

Just wanted to add that Jesus being gay is not a spoiler, it’s an incidental part of his character like Rick’s heterosexuality and is treated as such in the comics.
