I feel like Cate Blanchett’s Independent Spirit Awards look bodes well for the Oscars. This Gucci makes it seem like she’s in a playful, fun mood. And why wouldn’t she be? She’s got two Oscars, she knows she’s not going to win this year and she can just go and have fun. So why not have a great time and wear this crazy Gucci gown to the Spirits? Right? I mean, I would LOATHE this on anyone else. But on Cate, it almost looks elegant instead of cuckoo-bird cray-cray. Speaking of birds… yes, that is a very fancy peacock on her dress. SO FANCY.
Cate was also in on the joke when the Spirit Awards hosts – Kate McKinnon & Kumail Nanjiani – did an absolutely amazing spoof of Carol. After this bit aired, Cate was seen crying from laughter, she thought it was so funny. “Clandestine glove lunch” is the new thing. It’s a seduction!
As for Cate’s partner-on-crime, Rooney Mara, she wore Hugo Boss. And she looked like a sad mime. No no no! I actually think this Hugo Boss dress is totally fine, albeit slightly boring. At least it wasn’t another f—king nude gown! What’s tragic here is her hair. Ugh, so dour.

It’s Rooney’s expression that makes everything so joyless; a great smile would’ve made this outfit+hair+makeup just fine. I don’t understand; maybe that’s just her natural expression, maybe she’s in chronic pain from the sadness of living…? I worry about her.

Or maybe she doesn’t like to smile in photographs. A lot of us don’t. I find this much nicer than the huge ” I’m having the time of my life” smiles we usually see. Which look fake.
Possible, but she just seems to project misery at every photo call. Other actors/actresses manage to not smile in photos but also not look like someone just died.
She apparently doesn’t like to smile unless she feels like it. Which sounds a little like a petulant teenager.
Bridget, maybe it is since she is American. But I am from Finland we do not smile unless we feel like it too, when we smile you know it is genuine.
I prefer this more natural expression rather than fake smiles too, it’s what I’m used to. I think she is stunning and adore the minimalist approach to styling.
I wonder whether her team is trying to style her as the second coming of Audrey Hepburn (her hairstyle is very similar) and she’s not having it.
Why does she hate accessories so much? A pair of earrings? A statement ring? A nice bracelet? Is a cute handbag too much to ask?
Apart from earings, accesories are usually unnecessery and too much.
It’s not so much about her expression as it is about her terrible posture, something which could also have an effect on her health in the years to come. Maybe she does have a legit issue with that. If she took care of it, the difference would be impressive.

Well yeah, back problems must be a bitch to have. And I don’t know what that has to do with people disliking her. She’s far from being my favorite actress, I admit it, but that’s a completely different matter. I would never wish health issues on anyone.
@ Esmom: a bad posture like that, constant slouching, could lead to lung-related problems, especially as lung volume decreases with advancing age.
The thing is I don’t see any slouching. She looks like she’s standing up straight.

I don’t like the gown. And I don’t know how it works on her, but it does. She wears clothes so effortlessly, and she is so photogenic. Someone else would have worn that dress and it would have been wearing them. Not Cate.
Watched the Spirit Awards- and Cate and Rooney presented. They were fun together, and Rooney looked like she was having fun- what a difference! I liked the dress, but not the hair.
