Jenny Beavan: ‘You don’t have to look like a supermodel to be successful’ (update)

88th Annual Academy Awards - Press Room
Mad Max was actually the film with the most wins at Sunday night’s Oscars, taking home six Academy Awards but all in technical categories like makeup, production design, editing, sound and costume design. One of the most viral clips from the night was of course bada-s Mad Max costume designer Jenny Beavan, walking down the aisle to accept her Oscar in a bedazzled faux leather jacket, black jeans and boots as various nominees and industry people sat glaring at her, refusing to clap. Director Alejandro Inarritu was especially rude-looking and had his arms folded. (Update: he defended himself, see below.) He did eventually clap, but as you can see from the clip below it’s not like everyone gave this lady her due when she went up on stage. Maybe that’s just how these ceremonies go as people can’t clap the entire time for everyone, but the judging and side-eyeing was obvious.

I really liked how Mark Rylance and Kate Winslet were like “right on” for Jenny when they saw her creative outfit. (Ned Rocknroll couldn’t be bothered to clap though.) Jenny, who is actually a two-time Oscar winner, having first won for Room with a View in 1986, explained during her post-win press conference that her outfit was meant as homage to Mad Max, that she has a bad back and can’t wear heels and that she just wanted to be comfortable. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter she said that she wasn’t offended by people not clapping as she walked to accept her award and that it’s hard to keep up the clapping throughout that interminable ceremony. (My words.) She also had some things to say about the ridiculous policy at Cannes of women being required to wear heels on the red carpet. Remember that?

She wore a biker outfit in homage to Mad Max
I am a real jeans person. I have clothes to dress up in, but [the Oscars] was a really conscious thing of not just doing the plain black suit. I am British with a slightly rebellious character; I always have been. But, actually, in truth, you’ve seen me. I’m short, I’m fat. I really would look ridiculous in a gown. What I was actually wearing at the Oscars was sort of an homage to Mad Max — a kind of biker outfit. I thought, “If I can’t beat them, or if I can’t sort of join them, then why not try doing something a little bit fun?” And George [Miller] loved it. The [vegan] leather jacket had the Immorten Joe symbol on the back and I was just giving a little wink to Mad Max.

She wanted to have fun and she didn’t hear about a dress code
The Academy didn’t say anything about a strict dress code. I think it may have said to wear black tie, but you know nothing about whether you must wear heels, not like in Cannes where apparently any woman who walks down the red carpet has to wear heels. I was furious about that! I mean, come on, it’s crazy. When I was nominated [for an Oscar] for The King’s Speech I just wore a black Chinese jacket and matching trousers that was made for me by Jane Law, who also made Lily James’ Cinderella costume [designed by fellow nominee Sandy Powell]. Jane made me that suit and that was fine. But this year I was trying to do something more fun. All I heard were nice comments as I walked out and, obviously, some people quite liked it. My daughter and son-in-law said the response was absolutely amazing in the room and there was enormous warmth.

On people not clapping for her: ‘I felt the warmth’

I just think I was quite slow. It is so easy to trip, even though I was wearing a sensible pair of boots. I just wanted to take it slowly. And, honestly, I didn’t clap the whole time [during the ceremony] — your hands get tired. We had done a huge amount of clapping by that time. They didn’t have to! I don’t mind in the least if they didn’t clap. I felt really good, I felt the warmth, I was so proud of doing the film for George and it didn’t matter what anyone else thought, really…

The reaction has been slightly frightening, but thank God I don’t do social media. My Oscar is out on the table and we are patting it as we pass by, but I am just having a little moment. By the time I get back to London, hopefully everything will be settled down and I’ll get back to normal.

She wants women to feel good about themselves
I have to say, once the BAFTA furor died down, I can only thank Stephen Fry. He has sent me the most lovely emails and that’s all good. I made a conscious decision that I was going to do the same thing at the Oscars that I had at the BAFTAs [with my outfit]. I was absolutely doing it as an homage to the film — and I don’t have any sense that anyone in the Academy didn’t appreciate it. I really do think things will all calm down, but the only thing I would like is for my outfit to have a positive effect on what women feel about themselves. You don’t actually have to look like a supermodel to be successful. If that could be a takeaway, I think that would be a good thing. It is really good to have a positive feeling about yourself, because then you can do anything. People don’t have to clap for you; they don’t have to like the work.

[From The Hollywood Reporter, headers added]

How awesome is this lady? She’s clever and witty and has so many positive, inspiring things to say about fashion, self image and success. Plus Beavan now has two Oscars. Notice that in her talk with The Hollywood Reporter she didn’t even mention her previous Oscar. She would absolutely have bragging rights to mention her previous Oscar, but she didn’t bring it up except to talk about what she wore on one other occasion and she’s been nominated TEN times. I so would have dropped that into the conversation if I was her.

Update: Thanks to CornyBlue for the update on Alejando Inarritu’s statement on Beavan’s win. He issued a statement to The Guardian that read, in part. “I think Jenny Beavan is a masterful costume designer and very deserving of the Oscar for Mad Max: Fury Road.” That would have been a nice way to defend himself, but instead he had to Britta/Lena it up by continuing to talk and painting himself as this wronged victim. “By editing and omitting the full reality and suggesting I felt anything but admiration is mean-spirited and false. What you don’t see in the 10 second clip being circulated is my applause for Jenny as she ascended the stairs to the stage. I’ve learned a lot this awards season … that I should never cross my arms when I am sitting down.

She is a 10 time nominee and two time winner, yeah, I don’t think she needed to explain herself at all. Sucks about the bad back though.

    • Bettyrose says:

IKR? It didn’t even occur to me during the live broadcast that her outfit was out of place. She’s not an actress and in my world creative types often wear jeans and Docs to work functions.

      • Tiffany says:

If it were a man with that resume and he dressed like that, there never would have been a story.

The upside is that Jenny was interviewed and the world knows how awesome she is.

      • crtb says:

        @ Tiffany says

If this had been Madonna or Lady Ga Ga people would be applauding how they always think outside the box and how creative & imaginative they dress.

  2. Sarah(too) says:

I love her. I’ve never been a fangirl of a costume designer before, but I am now.

    • CornyBlue says:

Right ?? Imagine at the end of the Oscars coming out stanning for a costume designer and editor. these women are so awesome.

    • vava says:

I think it’s great. To be honest, I’ve never heard of her before this. I like that she did her thing and it unconventional. We need more people like this in the world – particularly with this Hollywood set. It was refreshing to see someone up on the stage who wasn’t wearing some vulgar or otherwise unattractive expensive designer gown. Kudos to her!

    • I Choose Me says:

      Hear, hear!

  3. kri says:

She is everything I love about the British. Truly gracious. Truly honorable. And that sweet little remark about the Oscar just being on a table getting a pat as someone walks by…. Go eff yourself haters. I love her.

  4. paolanqar says:

She shouldn’t need the urge of explaining her choices to those idiots because unlike many others in that shallow industry, she is an accomplished professional with a strong personality and she can wear what the hell she likes.
Truth is that without her amazing work actors wouldn’t receive all the accolades they do indeed receive and people should show more respect for jobs like Jenny Beaven’s.
As I see it, all the people who didn’t clap for her Oscar are just a bunch of jealous wankers.

  5. Snowflake says:

She’s awesome!!! You go Jenny! 🙂

  6. Mia4s says:

    Wow, she is the BEST.

Plus the jacket is faux-leather (even vegan some reports said!); So she’s a cruelty-free badass!!

    • Sam says:

The jacket is also available online for like $60, I saw. So it’s an off the rack jacket that she customized with the Mad Max embellishments. She’s freaking awesome all around.

    • Pinky says:

      I want the jacket!!!

      -TheRealPinky

    • INeedANap says:

I would buy that jacket if it came embellished, no lie.

  7. Kaye says:

I think this woman may be my hero. What an admirable attitude. She gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and did her own thing.

  8. Sam says:

I hate that she has to explain her choices. But she certainly seems to be taking the whole thing with great humor, which is nice. You go, Jenny Beaven, you do you. And I think being nominated for Oscars 10 times speaks more than enough.

I looked through the films she worked on, and it seems like most of her work is in the historical/period piece genre, so Mad Max appears to be a bit of a departure for her. I’m glad she got the award for doing something that seems to be outside of her normal work.

    • Ctkat1 says:

Both she and Margaret Sixel, the editor for Mad Max who won, had never done action/sci-fi before: Jenny was almost exclusively Period and Sixel had edited animated films. So George Miller took a chance on both of these (celebrated, talented) women by letting them stretch beyond what they previously did.

  9. the_blonde_one says:

Yet they’ll clap when some chick gets up there with her toot, tits and coot hanging out. Or a clearly inebriated, in need of a flea dip male. This award is for accomplishments not for ‘I want to have sex with you, here’s an award’. Ridiculous and indicative of other problems the awards show has.

    • saras says:

Yes you nailed it! It’s not supposed to be every woman needs to look constantly #*$#able to win at life!

  10. CornyBlue says:

Ok this tired of clapping excuse is really dumb as her’s was the fourth award of the night.
I think Innaritu came out and said something nice but that side eyeing tho…
She is my icon now. I have always worried about not being traditionally beautiful and feminine and this lady brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Jenny!!

    • Celebitchy says:

Thanks Corny for that update on Inarritu. I’ll add it!

    • Delta Juliet says:

Really, when I go to my kid’s functions at school the clapping never ends as they call each kid but jeez, suck it up and smack your hands together. Some people don’t get recognition very often. The “tired of clapping” excuse is weak.

      • SM says:

That’s because at childeren’s functions we all are just simple people caring for someone. Most people in that room are self absorbed. They are not there to celebrate each other but to promote themselves. Hence clapping is work. I just realized looking at this video that probably at least part of them are not clapping because they just don’t care. It seems like Inarritu is just sitting there smelling his own fart while waiting for his name to be called. They only act as if they care when they see a camera roll by. The front row seats may be great but that means people seated there have to work overtime and act like they care about other people’s achievements. If the Academy wants to boost ratings they should introduce hidden cameras next year.

      • What was that says:

I read elsewhere Innaritu was mad because he knew he needed the technical awards and it was not going his way ..alledgely he was very unpleasant that night to actors who had worked with him before but we’re not in his film this time…but the ‘opposition ‘…Michael Keaton ..in Spotlight..
It has exposed the people for the hypocrites they are for saying things in the speeches but behaving like a spoit child they really are
I think Jenny Bevan is way above him in creativity and attitude…

      • Bridget says:

I thought so too. It was pretty clear pretty quickly that The Revenant wasn’t going to get Best Picture – the movie was sold on its technical merits, and the more awards Mad Max racked up you could tell it The Revenant wasn’t going to happen.

      • SM says:

But he won best director two years in a row. How much more prase does one’s ego need??!!!

      • CornyBlue says:

@SM must have known that was Fox’s pr and not his skills that got him the 2nd.

  11. Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

For me, it’s got nothing to do with shortness or fatness or lack of high heels or age.

There are ways of checking all the boxes but remaining comfortable during the long Oscars weekend. There are ways of doing a biker tux.

If she were a cinematographer or lighting designer the lack of wit and verve in her Oscars outfit would be more understandable. She’s a world-class costume designer. It’s as if Adele sang off-key on purpose then gave an interview about high heels.

She’s got us talking about her days after the Oscars. So perhaps her Oscars look was genius.

    • perplexed says:

I think costume designers generally dress a little “weird.” I remember one year some costume designer made out of fake credit cards. I think their individual sense of style might be a little more eccentric.

I thought this lady’s explanation for why she chose her outfit made sense though (if you can’t beat them…)

    • hmmm says:

I dunno. I love, love the way she accessorised as well. She looks so well and richly put together and really nailed the image with the confident way she carries herself. Then take a look at the ever appropriate clothes hanger, Duchess Kate.

    • dagdag says:

A costume designer is not a fashion designer.

Just for thought, I know some were gifted, old style car mechanics with good to outstanding income and they drive really plain used cars. Never got a satiesfying answer. My guess, they loved the mechanics and looks of those expensive cars, but never had the urge to possess one.

      • Dara says:

“A costume designer is not a fashion designer”. << Yes! Exactly!

I really wish the Academy would spend more time highlighting all the super-talented people behind the camera. The amount of time, effort, skill, passion and sheer brilliance they bring to every film they work on is inspiring.

      • Mrs. Wellen-Mellon says:

        Agreed, dagdag.

A costume designer thinks a lot about how that scarf is going to stay put, for example. (You probably saw the photo this site ran yesterday of the off-kilter scarf.) She has a far more profound knowledge and understanding of fashion history than a fashion designer, of how to establish attitude. The fact that she’s having to explain her intention means she missed the mark.

      • dagdag says:

When I plan to buy a movie on DVD, besides the theme and actors, I go mainly by who is doing the directing, costume and camera.

I am in a way, I am addicted to costume designers.

      • dagdag says:

        @Mrs. Wellen-Mellon says

….The fact that she’s having to explain her intention means she missed the mark. …

        Yes, I am disappointed.

      • LAK says:

Dara: I recall a post from a commentor yesterday (?) who advocated for removal of the few shows that include the technical side in their telecast because that is so boring and makes the ceremonies too long. I’m not sure they understood that their favoured awards ceremonies were all showcasing the acting branch.

Many of the technical guilds hold their own ceremonies which aren’t televised, only the acting guild has turned their awards ceremony into a big deal, worthy of a telecast and fashion.

BTW: i’m not bashing the acting guild. Good for them that they’ve managed to make their guild more visible than the other guilds. Ditto their awards at any show that incorporates other guilds and branches.

This particular technical award has taction because it comes with some controversy.

The technical awards are always interesting, but Joe public isn’t interested in them. It’s really that simple. To extent that some technical awards are handed out at separate Oscar ceremonies.

  12. Pri says:

This is why I side eye L’Oreal. For a company that says they celebrate women, they sponsor a red carpet that dictates what women should wear.

That and L’Oreal sells whitening creams around the globe.

  13. AlmondJoy says:

    Really, really liking this lady.

  14. Rachel says:

Don’t get even, get … Beavan.

Seriously though, it is refreshing to hear someone so successful speak with such candour and without any open bitterness towards the jerks who couldn’t be bothered to clap.

  15. Narak says:

I thought of Lemmy when I saw her. She’s so damn talented, love what she wore.

  16. Eleonor says:

    She is badass.
Two times Oscar winner they can all go south.

  17. KBeth says:

    I like this woman!

  18. bobslaw says:

Mark Rylance and Kate Winslet looked so happy for Ms. Beavan. That smug shithead behind Inarritu who was doing that ‘cover up your laugh with a coy hand’ thing makes me angry.

    • Lucy says:

Cate B seemed really happy as well! Sure, she was presenting the award, but she was very affectionate to Jenny.

    • arbelia says:

Jenny made for Kate probably one of the most awesome costume she wore on movie: Marianne Dashwood wedding dress. An incredible piece of work , trimmed with straw, and so lovely.
      She knows her greatness.

  19. Bridget says:

I thought people looked genuinely surprised as they saw the back of her coat. And I also personally thought Inarritu’s grumpiness was because Mad Max was winning so many awards over The Revenant.

  20. Nikki says:

Add me to the list of folks who LOVE her! Unless it’s an add for incontinence, one NEVER EVEN SEES A WOMAN WITH GREY HAIR IN THE MEDIA! Seriously, in every movie, one every vacation ad, in every retirement condo as, the guy is a silver fox, but the woman has to have dyed hair. Rock on, Jenny!

  21. Ayra. says:

    Right on!
But seeing the unnecessary judgmental looks several people had, made me so angry for her.

  22. Talise says:

Yeah yeah Innaritu – poor you getting some flak, I KNOW that looking up and down opinionated look men give when you arnt playing the game – ive been there.

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

Me, too. Would happen in London ALL THE TIME when I lived there back in the 80s.

Fortunately for me, I live in Boston where no one gives two f’s what you wear!

  23. lizzieb says:

It just seems everyone is so freakin’ judgemental these days. Who gives a crap what she wears. All the gals should go “comfy” next year. See what fire and brimstone that brings on.

  24. teacakes says:

Can I just sit here and fangirl over her? Because she’s awesome. I hope I get to be as badass as her when I’m her age.

  25. Jonas says:

Right on! She is amazing at her job.
AI as previously mentioned by another poster — was pissy MadMax won another and not his film. He was probably getting nervous that George Miller might beat him too. The directors and best actors have the longest wait of the night. Which does not excuse his behavior.

But AI is an “upper class” Mexican (Spanish blood), he is not Indian. His wife looks Spanish European blood, too. My ex-mother in-law was of the same upper Mexican class and she was a world class snob. She never wore jeans kind of woman. No flip flops. Never left the house undone. Part of it the side eye is cultural, too. Mexicans of Spanish descent (the ruling elite) look down on the Mexican Indians. I am an American Indian, it was a sore spot for her. But if not as much as if I were of Mestizo…HA!

Mark Rylance is a class act. Incredible stage actor. A rebel on stage, but off stage top notch. I have met him before, he was good friends and colleague of Russell Means (actor and American Indian activist), Mark hosted a tribute to Russell when Russell passed away a few years ago.

  26. arbelia says:

i just remembered a little story from the Sense and Sensibility dvd Commentaries about Jenny i wanted to share.
The producers were talking about how Emma Thompson is incredible on set, that she really cares about each person. And at the end she made some presents for everybody .
But the biggest of all was probably for Jenny: She offered her a trip to Paris. I think that says a lot about how much Jenny is repected and loved by her fellow coworker.By comparison , Ang Lee the Director had some big assortiment of teas and a plate .

    • CornyBlue says:

      Aww thats so cute.

    • Kate says:

A trip to Paris when you live in the UK is not a huge gift.

      • arbelia says:

Well it’s definitely bigger than a plate or a book, especially considering that hotel accomodations in the center of Paris are expensive. And it was no really about how expensive her gift was, but how thoughtful and delicate it was.
Emma And Jenny knew each others for years at this point , and the crew seemed to be very impressed by Emma’s gesture.

  27. Minxx says:

When I saw her coming down to collect her Oscar (from what it seemed to be the very back of the room!), I immediately thought that her outfit was a gutsy and adorable homage to Mad Max, I don’t know why anyone would be offended by it. She’s a TEN time nominee and 2 time Oscar winner, for pete’s sake! I don’t think she should even have to comment, she’s more talented and creative than most of them but of course, she is not young, perky and/or squeezed into something ridiculous. Good for her! She should not explain herself to anyone. Most costume designers wear something quirky to the Oscars, it’s sort of expected. I thought it was very brave of her.
Mark Rylance, Kate Winslet and Michael Fassbender applauded enthusiastically 🙂

    • magpie says:

yes to all points. Rylance’s glee is adorable, Given that Mad Max was one of the most feminist films I’ve seen in years, I thought her outfit was very fitting,

  28. SM says:

She is awesome. Is that Tom Hardy she passes by at one point. If so, him not clapping is really rude. He was in Mad Max and worked with this incredible lady. He should have been clapping

  29. Penelope says:

    Pure class. I’m speechless.

  30. HeyThere! says:

Okay, she’s awesome. BUT the clip still stands with me. There is a lady in it who gives the rudest look. Several people are giving ‘ew’ and ‘wtf’ looks…..either someone let a horrible silent but deadly fart OR it’s obvious shade. Shame on hem. It isn’t that they aren’t clapping, it’s the looks on their face and the body language!

  31. vv007 says:

As soon as I saw the bedazzled skull design on the back of her jacket I realized she was paying homage to the movie. In fact, other Mad Max winners also had skulls somewhere incorporated into their outfits. I remember a guy having one on his bow tie at some point. It’s clear that the winners in those categories were very proud of the film and were appreciative of George Miller’s creation, so it was pretty cool to see that reflected not just in their speeches but attire as well!

  32. lskfjsld says:

I am kind of interested in the names of the people who didn’t clap. They were a lot of them and she wasn’t taking long to get down there or anything. revenant director is an ass and funny he will always be discriminated against so his arrogance is idiotic. never liked his movies though like the cinematography.

  33. love scandal says:

Why fit in when you were born to stand out!! She’s a guru, who does not need any baubles or glitter. Well done to her. Really admire her success.
As a repeated slipped disc sufferer, my sympathies are with her regarding the back pain. Oh the AGONY.
I ask myself which is the better skill, to wear the outfits or to have the capability of designing, cutting and constructing the outfits? No contest really, is it?
Those that did not give applause, it’s pure bad manners and hopefully bad karma on them. Remember, the Oscars are the biggest work event of the year, in their industry. You have just displayed, to the world and his wife what a mean minded, pedujueced, ungratious, unaccepting git you are. Not great for your reputation is it.

  34. Tessd says:

I don’t get the whole furor over her outfit and looks – it’s not her job to look like a model/movie star. No one expects a worker putting up the Oscars decoration to look like a model.

  35. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I admire her; I esteem her. Heck, I just flat out love her. Go Jenny!

  36. SM says:

And she is just proved she is a real class act. Justifying their behavior showing she really is above them all

  37. Tara says:

She is so awesome! No pretense at all. She even admits that she wouldn’t look right in a gown the way the others would, so why not go for something totally different? I read an article that said the lack of applause was because of how she dressed and looked, but no I don’t think that was it. That was also a long walk to the stage. I think people don’t care about the category and maybe they think period films deserve awards for it.

There was also this awesome anecdote she gave about Charlize Theron recently that made me realize how badass Charlize really is. “Take the compliment, bitch.”

  38. Lynn says:

I thought she dressed bad assed……Mad Max Bad Assed!
