Diane Kruger: ‘It was a big step into adulthood’ to move to NYC with Joshua

diane cover

Diane Kruger covers the latest issue of The Edit to promote her latest French film, Disorder. The interview is pretty interesting, because Kruger is once again talking openly about her relationship with Joshua Jackson. Diane and Joshua have been together for a decade, and while they are famously unmarried, they are also one the all-time best red carpet couples. Many feel that they are #RelationshipGoals. But… Diane still isn’t talking about that weird moment back in December, when sources confirmed that she was making out with Norman Reedus in a New York dive bar. I still don’t know what was up with that, and Diane is not spilling the details. You can read the full interview here at net-a-porter.com, and here are some highlights:

Moving to New York with Joshua Jackson: “I just moved [to New York] this week. I need to unpack and buy some house stuff, like candles and books.” For the past five years Kruger has lived between Paris and Vancouver, where her long-term boyfriend, actor Joshua Jackson, was filming a TV series. Jackson’s Off Broadway stage debut in Smart People last month was the catalyst for this latest move. “[Moving here] was a major commitment. That’s a big step into adulthood for me, to allow that time for someone else out of my time.”

She’s socially awkward: “I’m a loner. I think it has held me back in my life quite a bit. I’m socially awkward with people in a bigger group. People often say they think I’m cold or standoffish, but I’m just not a good schmoozer at all. And that’s not good in my job… because, obviously, it is a big requirement.”

Working in French films: “Parts in French films are more interesting for women. In American studio pictures, women are there to support the male protagonist in whatever his storyline is.”

Working with Catherine Deneuve. “I thought [Deneuve] would be this posh, perfect Parisian, but she’s so not. The last time I saw her she was in this fur coat, sitting on one of the driver’s cars outside, smoking a cigarette and holding a glass of wine in the other hand. She’s so cool.”

Self-awareness: “I didn’t have a great private life until recently; I was always looking for the next thing. But when I turned 30, I realized I was being an idiot. I was living this accomplished life: I speak three languages, I’ve traveled the world, made good money. I realized that I really don’t know anything about what is going on in the world around me – and [I was] not so great about [knowing] myself, either… Now I’m not too self-centered!”

She doesn’t watch The Affair: “He would rather not, [with] all the sex scenes. I think it brings up uncomfortable conversations.”

Whether she’ll marry Joshua: “Welcome to my dilemma!”

Starting a family: “I feel very European and I think that I’m going to grow old in Paris. I have this fantasy of raising my kids there one day. I just can’t imagine living my life sipping cocktails at the Chateau Marmont, you know?… It took me a long time to realize that I’m never going to play a better part than my own life.”

[From The Edit]

A lot of sites are running the moving-to-New York quotes as “Diane and Joshua have finally moved in together after 10 years!!” But is that really what she’s saying? I think she’s saying that after 10 years of flirting with the idea of moving to New York, they finally pulled the trigger. Joshua and Diane have always lived together, it’s just that they’re always working and so they’re often staying in rentals in Canada, or LA or Paris or whatever. Also, I’m so ready for Joshua and Diane to have a baby. She’s been talking about making babies with him for years!

They’ve lived together forever. They once had some spread on a house they lived in in LA I think it was. I loved the home. It was cozy.

  2. CharlotteCharlotte says:

That couch pic looks like the *poop* angle.

  3. Div says:

I always figured she and Josh had an open relationship. I remember reading an interview once where she seemed to subtly imply something along those lines and how they dealt with often being “six months apart”…

I definitely want to check out Disorder. She’s one of those actors who are much better acting in their native language, or a language they are practically at a native level in, than in English. She was wonderful in “Farewell my Queen.” Plus, Matthias Schoenaerts is in it.

    • Jayna says:

I imagine they did have some sort of open relationship, like don’t ask/don’t tell if something happens while apart, but not that they actively look for other relationships or sex partners..

      • Bishg says:

I found them to be the cutest couple, but after the “Norman Reedus mess” last December I started reading comments about how Joshua has pretty much cheated with every cast mate/crew member he’s dealt with in the recent past.
I haven’t looked at him in the same way ever since..
My guess is that either they had a open relationship but the deal imploded once the cat was out of the bag, or they didn’t and they just broke up after she was caught cheating.
Either way, I don’t thin they’re together now. They haven’t been papped together in several months, they only made a public appearance a few weeks ago at I don’t remember which event, but their body language was quite off. Maybe they tried to work thing out for a while and then gave up.

      • Rose says:

They never broke up, they are still together. Diane spent a great deal of time in NYC while Josh was doing his play. It seems to be an assumption that they do have an open relationship of sorts and have done so for a while. There is no evidence that he has cheated with every cast mate he’s dealt with in the recent past.

      • Lex says:

If this Norman business happened in a crowded bar, where are the damn photos?!?!?! I don’t believe it based on that.

    • Ethelreda says:

I suspect ‘open relationships’ are pretty much the norm in celeb land. But the key, particularly when you’re famous, is to be discreet at all times. Perhaps Diane forgot this bit last December.

  4. Serina says:

Norman Reedus lives in New York. How convenient…

    • Rose says:

Diane still seems to be close to Norman Reedus. She favours his pics on instagram still and she has just done an interview for a photographer, that is doing a number of interviews with people and one of these was Norman Reedus.

Most of this interview sounds like stuff in other interviews she has done over the last couple of years. Moving to New York paragraph has been changed. That paragraph reads differently to the one I read when it came out initially.

      • gina says:

Josh´s play ended almost 2 weeks ago. Josh wanted to return back home to California after that .
Diane was photographed last week and this week alone in NYC, grocery shopping and doing her laundry. It looks like she lives in NYC now.

  5. Who ARE these people? says:

House stuff like candles and books. That’s like moving into a new dorm room.

The real house stuff of moving into a new place — a mop, toilet paper, liquid antibacterial household cleaner (or white vinegar) to get rid of all the crud left behind by the previous occupant, a roll of paper towels, sponges and some clean rags, rubber gloves, and Redi-Shades to cover the windows until you know what you want to do.

I like her and I like her life.

  6. Danielle says:

Talking about taking a big step into adulthood when you are 39 sounds a little strange. I just turned 40, and I didn’t feel like a new grown up. More like I have aging on my mind alot.

  7. JK says:

“That’s a big step into adulthood for me, to allow that time for someone else out of my time.”

Isn’t she almost 40? And wasn’t she married before? I don’t really get this comment at all.

I like her fashion sense, and Joshua will always be Pacey for me, but I think they’ve got a strange relationship and I really believed they were over after the Norman Reedus things…

    • Anon33 says:

I absolutely had the same thought when I read that quote. Something in the milk ain’t clean here…either that or she’s just a twit.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I thought she sounded very self-centered and immature for her age, but working on it. She’s 39 and she sounds more like a twenty-something.

  9. Esther says:

“She doesn’t watch The Affair: “I think it brings up uncomfortable conversations.”

same reason for not watching The Walking Dead i guess.

    • Serina says:

      Lmao! Exactly.

    • Bishg says:

      That’s so stupid.
Your partner stars in one of the most-praised /controversial TV shows of the year and you don’t watch it because there are too many sex scenes? This is bullshit, especially coming from an actress…

      • ell says:

        it’s quite common actually.

      • Bishg says:

Well, if she had seen the series, she would have found out that Joshua doesn’t have so many sex scenes (especially compared to the two leads) and most importantly he gave an extraordinary depth to his own character!
If I were him, I’d be sad if the only thing she grasped was the sex.

  10. CornyBlue says:

Why is Diane Kruger famous ? What does she do ? What does her boyfriend do ? Why are gossip sites obsessed with them ?

  11. Tania says:

Wow, she sounds so self absorbed.

  12. Tiffany says:

    I still miss The Bridge.

  13. Fan says:

Josh has never gotten over Katie Holmes.

  14. ell says:

i like her, and have no issues with what she says. in the past she talked about her previous marriage, and how she didn’t feel she was ready for that sort of commitment. some people take a long time to get to that point in life, and it’s nothing to do with how old you are.

    • SugarQuill says:

I like her too and agree with everything you said, ell.

    • Asiyah says:

“some people take a long time to get to that point in life, and it’s nothing to do with how old you are. ”

especially if you’re a loner and socially awkward, as she says she is. I relate because I too am a socially awkward loner and at 31 feel like I’m 18 because I can’t seem to get to that point in life of wanting to commit romantically and have children.

  15. Caitlin Bruce says:

Do we know she is 39? Her Instagram is like a 20 year olds with the quotes and stuff about relationships that contradicts her “we’re still happy together” act. I’ve never really been fond of Diane but maybe that’s because I’m a Pacey + Joey shipper 4 lyf 😂 Even though I’m 24 years old and need to get over it I still wish to get a Katie/Josh reunion pic.

  16. lskfjsld says:

She looks like she just turned 30. Maybe when you are aging or in her case not aging maybe you don’t feel like an adult. I don’t know. I think she is so pretty though. I wish I could look like that. Something about her life is appealing. If they have an open relationship that’s disappointing. I think I read something about her being disappointed in love before and I wonder if her open relationship is a reflection of that. The affair is so good though. But Kruger doesnt have to watch it if she doesn’t want to.

  17. Desaix says:

Bigger than banging other guys behind his back?

  18. Vida says:

She’s so boring. No hint of emotion whatsoever. Plus she comes across as very immature, even on Instagram. She’s 39 and still acts like she’s in her 20’s.

  19. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I like Diane. She’s cute with Joshua, and she would also be cute with Norman. Stay with JJ, Diane! I’ve got dibs on Norman and his big strong arms..
