A movie mash-up of ’21 Jump Street’ & ‘Men in Black’ is happening

It’s still April, so could Hollywood be a little late with this April Fools gag? This has to be a joke, right? At the annual CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Sony Pictures announced that the next, inevitable sequel to 21 Jump Street (and its sequel, 22 Jump Street) will be a crossover with the studio’s popular Men in Black franchise.

The upcoming film, which has been tentatively called MIB 23, has been in the works at Sony, and news of the film leaked during the Sony email hack back in 2014. The new project has a script from 22 Jump Street screenwriter Rodney Rothman and will be directed by James Bobin, who directed Muppets Most Wanted.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are returning to their Jump Street roles, but there’s no word yet as to whether or not original MIBs Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will show up – although it seems highly unlikely that they will. The film has no official release date as of yet, but you can expect to see it sometime in 2017.

Is Hollywood playing some wacky version of Mad Libs? This project has WTF written all over it. Let’s hope that saying “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” because this concept screams “bad idea.” And what happened to “23 Jump Street: Medical School,” like the end credits of the last film promised? I was looking forward to seeing Channing Tatum in scrubs!

    WTF is right.

So they’re merging two franchises I wouldn’t bother going to see? So, only one movie to avoid, then. Thanks, guys.

  3. Mia4s says:

Huh. Well they’ll never be able to afford Jones or Smith. I just….huh.

Dear Hollywood: come up with some original ideas.

    • byland says:

Well, technically they are dumping two unrelated franchises into one movie. That’s new-ish. Awful, but unexpected. Let’s just pray it fails, so it doesn’t become A Thing.

I’m here for this. Loved all MIB movies and cackled like a nut during both Jump Street movies. Its innovative and I like it.

I don’t want you to feel alone. I like it too.

Me too, the jump street movies are hilarious. I will watch this just because of the connections to those two movies.

And it doesn’t hurt that I think Tatum is super hot.

How can it be a MIB mash-up if the two stars who made MIB aren’t there? I never got the hype over the Jump Street movies. I tried to watch the first one and couldn’t even finish it – and I usually hate dropping a book or movie but that one was just so stupid, (to me) that I couldn’t bear to watch through to the end.
Anyway, I loved MIB and this has screw-up written all over it. Yuck.

  7. Skins says:

So I guess this whole Channing Tatum is a huge movie star thing is over

OMG hilarious, I was hoping for a 23 jump street, medical school romp as well. I am a doofus.

This actually sounds hilarious. And it’ll probably do well, especially considering how this could be like a silly pseudo-x files episode.

Jonah hill and Channing Tatum are great comedically together. I would definitely watch this.
