Mark Hamill will do whatever you want for charity

The resurgence of Mark Hamill is in full swing. Although heralded as the voice of The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, he will never stop being Luke Skywalker from Star Wars to most of us. Riding on his rediscovered wave of popularity, Mark is using his power for good by teaming up with Lucasfilms’ Force for Change to raise money to benefit four charities. Each week, a different prize is awarded to the top fundraiser. The prize this week is the opportunity to hang with Mark doing the activity of the winner’s choosing – as long as it’s legal.

No need to track down a one-of-a-kind BB unit to locate Luke Skywalker. The actor is offering up a chance to hang out for this week’s biggest fundraiser in the Force For Change charity drive.

Each week for the past month, Lucasfilm has released a new video featuring different prizes — a trip to Skellig Michael, where Luke was in exile; autographed stormtrooper helmets; a remote control BB-8 — but the latest has a personal touch.

This week’s top moneymaker will be eligible to win a trip to London in July for Star Wars Celebration Europe, and included in that is a chance to hang with Mark Hamill for any number of activities. He says whatever the winner decides to do has to be within the boundaries of good taste and not illegal.

The Force For Change campaign ends on “Star Wars Day” on May the 4th. The four select charities include the U.S. Fund for UNICEF in support of UNICEF Kid Power, American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Make-A-Wish.

The good news is that what happens with Mark Hamill stays with Mark Hamill. Remember this is the guy who didn’t tell Harrison Ford the big reveal in the Empire Strikes Back. Mark has a great sense of humor, especially about himself. He and Kathleen Kennedy filmed this year’s introductory Force for Change video in which he spends most of it staring intensely at the camera, mocking his one scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. For another Force for Change promotion prior to TFA’s opening, Mark spoke to tourists on Hollywood Blvd disguised as a stormtrooper. Most actors merely scribble their names on whatever you thrust at them but Mark will customize his autograph with a pithy comment. I follow his Twitter as well; if he isn’t giving spoilers to Episode VIII, he’s giving Prince Harry tips on flying. Mark seems like he’s having the time of his life. Although initially reticent to reprise his iconic role, he has since fully embraced it and I couldn’t be happier.

Force for Change will match dollar for dollar up to a million dollars. Last year they raised over ten million dollars. To donate, go here.

Side note – Mark and Marilou York have been married for almost forty years

It’s refreshing to see a celebrity doing something to help others rather than endlessly and tiresomely promoting themselves. (Cough, Kardashians. Cough Beyoncé).

  2. Astrid says:

Wow, good post! And 40 years – very cool.

  3. Jenns says:

Luke Skywalker was my first crush. And even at 36, my heart did a little flip when I saw him in The Force Awakens. Mark is doing a great thing and I love seeing him as Luke Skywalker again.

  4. Dhavynia says:

They have an extra in the DVD dedicated to this and I think each actor gets to pick their charity. I can’t recall how it works buy I thought it was great to included it
I am also shocked he’s been married that long. My husband is a comic book geek so I am very familiar with all those Batman/Superman/Justice League animations and you’ll be surprised on some of the actors who do the voices although Mark is the one who is permanent in all those series

He and his wife are my absolute favourite (not to mention their kids seem sane!), 40 years, all too rare!

They really lucked out with him. Too many actors gripe about being known for one thing when most actors would kill to be known for anything! I’m sure it annoys him sometimes but he’s gracious, does a lot of charity work, and has fun. Our Luke grew up pretty great.
    😉

yeah Hollywood didn’t ruin him, he’s so down to earth and he’s still married to the same woman and she isn’t a plastic Barbie doll. I just love him. I hope he rubs off on Daisy Ridley a bit since the blinds about her last December weren’t so great.

      • Magpie says:

They look like they’re good friends, but what were the blinds? Missed that.

Anyway love him so much. He and his wife are adorable.

  6. Carol says:

I love Mark Hamill and am so happy to see the public has rediscovered him! He seems like such a delightful person.

  7. Dolkite says:

So the question remains, people…what would YOU like to do with Mark Hamill assuming you made a large donation?

    • Mia4s says:

Haha! Honestly? I just want a hug. He seems so sweet. And maybe hang out at a theme park. He seems the type. 🙂

As an aside I have to say for some reason I love that Harrison Ford was put out that he didn’t tell him the “I am your father” twist. The fact that he cared enough to be bothered by not knowing delights me.

    • INeedANap says:

I want him to set next to me and reply to all the weirdos that message me on dating sites. I think he’d be hilarious, and then we can go out for wine and snacks.

      • LAR says:

Ha! I bet he’d come up with good ones. I think he’d also have to record my voicemail greeting.

I would totally like to share a meal with Mark Hamill! Seriously the guy sounds very entertaining.

  8. Miss M says:

He was handsome then and now. No wonder there is only and only one actor that can play Luke Skywalker!
    I didn’t know he’s been married for 40 years!!!!!!!!!!! That’s amazing!

I saw him speak at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in 2015 and he seems happy to be a part of this world again. Lucas’ stars did not share in the profits from the merchandise back in the day and I heard he would not sign anything Star Wars related for a long time. Times have changed. I had an enormous crush on him in 1977. http://nerdist.com/mark-hamills-autographs-are-a-hilarious-trip-into-the-mind-of-an-icon/

Mr Hamill is an international (intergalactic?) treasure. I hope he raises lots of money!!

  13. Murphy says:

Mark Hamill is just the best, I love him so much.

  14. holly hobby says:

One of my friend’s husbands is a comic con geek. He’s been going to comic con for years and he would post pics of him and Mark Hamill on his Facebook. He also posted Mark’s autographed cards and it’s true. There are self deprecating, funny comments on the cards he signed. So great that a new generation has rediscovered him. He and Harrison Ford are forever dear to me!

  15. Cerys says:

I’m glad to see his career is looking up again. He always seemed under-rated as an actor. I follow him on Twitter too and he comes across as a lovely guy. I wish him well.

  16. TreadStyle says:

Wish the next generation of celebrities were like him! Now charities PAY celebrities to represent or help them. It’s super depressing to see what celebrities receive that should be going to the actual charity!!! He is awesome, love it!

  17. Birdy says:

he is a sweet dude~ when my dog tater got sick he sent me a message on fb saying” hope he feels better” he is a cool guy
