Kristen Stewart at the ‘Personal Shopper’ Cannes premiere: tragic or punk?

wenn23873181

Here are some photos from last night’s second premiere in Cannes, the premiere of Personal Shopper starring everybody’s favorite lip-biter, Kristen Stewart. I’m sure we were all expecting Kristen Stewart to sweep onto the carpet in yet another Chanel look, and that’s exactly what happened, although I was expecting a full-length dress and not a mini. I get that she’s being paid by Chanel and she wants to get that cash money, but I doubt her contract stipulates that she can ONLY wear Chanel in Cannes. And this would have been an interesting moment for Balenciaga, or Calvin Klein, or hell, even Ralph Lauren. Instead, Kristen wore this absolutely horrid minidress. Does Karl Lagerfeld hate her? I don’t think he does, which is so weird, right? I think she’s just choosing the weird stuff from Chanel’s racks.

The styling is what takes this next-level though. I will never, NEVER understand red/pink eye makeup. Why is that EVER a thing? When was that ever considered “the look”? The only thing I like here is the ear-diamond whatever.

While Personal Shopper was booed by some critics at earlier screenings, as I said yesterday, most critics agree that Olivier Assayas got yet another stellar performance out of Kristen, and this marks another career-best for her. When asked point blank about the critics’ boos, Kristen shrugged it off, pointing out that not everyone booed. She also said this about the film: “I don’t mean to sound too dramatic or actor-y in saying, ‘Oh, it almost broke me,’ but I can do anything [now]. This movie made me feel like there’s nothing I can put myself through that could make me not keep going. I’ve just never felt so good feeling so bad.”

It’s like Swan Lake met Benadryl commercial.

      • Original T.C. says:

LOL! Yeah pink-eye was what I was thinking too.

Also her words laughing at the Snow White sequel for bombing is so going to bite her in the ass when her two films combined can’t break $2million. She’s such a low key mean girl always talking talking crap about others not being as arty or authentic as her.

      • tealily says:

        Hahahahahaha

      • Keaton says:

Omg! lololol I’m not a KStew hater or anything but this made laugh so hard. ACCURATE!!

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

I don’t mind the colors used—just how and where they’re used is pretty bad. I never did understand why blue was the go-to shade when I was growing up. But then, I grew up in the 60s and had an aunt who had an enormous selection of Mary Quant eye shadows, which included some really offbeat colors, including reds, pinks, and even yellow.

A touch of that red in a smoky eye could be a nice bit of drama, but using it as the primary shade and having it outline the entire eye so thickly is what puts this look into the “I need to see an eye surgeon STAT” territory.

The dress and hair are tragic.

    • Kate says:

Definitely her worst red carpet look yet.

  2. CidySmiley says:

She looks like she has pink eye.

  3. Alix says:

This is an easy one — tragic!

  4. guest says:

no more K.S, I have seen more of her then myself these days.

  5. Bobo says:

I wouldn’t mind it but her hair looks disgusting.

    • Her hair is tragic! Just vomit inducing, like a really bad science experiment.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It looks like a bad dye job that has grown out. I guess that’s what it’s supposed to look like, but it’s so unflattering and sickly looking. So she adds the conjunctivitis eye shadow…

      • Myrna says:

        Conjunctivitis eye shadow!
        Love it.

I think the dress could have worked if not for the busy-ness from the next up.

      • Myrna says:

That should have read from the “Neck” up

      • SydneySnider says:

She does look like her friend gave her a bad home bleach, and as if she’s been thumped around the head. Or, as some of you have already said, conjunctivitis. Let’s hope a stye doesn’t appear…

  6. Honey says:

I like the idea of the sleeves but the actual dress is awful and shapeless. The makeup is terrible

  7. Well Hello Adam Ant!

    • InvaderTak says:

      Adam would never!

And what’s with the white socks on the dude in the background?

      • Even if he did, I still would.
The guy in the background has a too small tux and it kind of fascinates me. I love that he owns it with the white socks.

  8. Astrid says:

Is this the same dress she wore yesterday with sleeves/wings added on? What a terrible look, especially the hair and makeup.

  9. MrsBPitt says:

The dress, makeup, and hair are horrible…I would kill for her legs, though! If I had those legs, I would wear nothing but mini’s, too!!

  10. GingerCrunch says:

    Everything BUT the eye makeup!

  11. Willa says:

    Holy Hell! TRAGIC!

  12. Green Is Good says:

    So much awful.

  13. lisa2 says:

Is this a different version of the dress she wore at the photocall. They look very much the same except for the wing sleeves. I don’t like the make up nor the dress..

But as many have noted she seems to be having a lot of fun at Cannes.

  14. als says:

I know it’s weird but I love that make up and I think it’s perfect for Cannes.
Instead of a big, over the top dress, she went with big, over the top make up. And she carries it well.

    • hk says:

I agree so much! Love her look here. I think she looks stunning. love love love. I’m fascinated by her. Is it terrible that I keep thinking she will come out of the phase of dating women?

    • mary s says:

Good, I was looking for someone else who likes her look. I think this funkiness is fun.

  15. Rach says:

Love it all! The eye make up is really pretty and because the hair is tousled it lessens the severity of the make up.

    • noway says:

I am not a fan of that kind of eye makeup, and please don’t do an extreme close up on it. Just yuck!!! Still if you photograph her full body showing the dress, I disagree with the sentiment here and think she looks pretty interesting. Is it an outfit and style anyone I know would wear? No way!!!! But it does look high fashion styling and better than some of the prom like dresses we see.

  16. Lucky says:

Her makeup looks like crazy Helena from Orphan Black. Which is not a look you should be going for!

    • meme says:

That’s it! I knew it reminded me of something. Tatiana should be a much bigger star than she is. she is amazing in OB.

      • Lucky says:

I agree, she is amazing. I often forget that it’s the same actress playing all the parts. And when one clone impersonates the other it blows me away! To me, Tatiana Maslany is the best actor on tv. It’s a shame she’ll never get recognized because of the bias against sci-fi shows

    • FF says:

I was about to say that: someone’s channelling Helena from Orphan Black.

  17. littlemissnaughty says:

*sigh* A pink/burgundy/cranberry eye can look absolutely stunning IF done right. ANY time you put anything red-adjacent around your eyes, you need line your eye with black or charcoal. Otherwise you look like a vampire and I highly doubt that is the association she, of all people, was going for. I love a cranberry eye in the fall but not like this. God. Who is doing her makeup? It looked sh*t yesterday as well.

I saw the trailer for Personal Shopper yesterday and frankly, she’s not bad but she’s got that De Niro thing going where no matter who she plays, she’s always Kristen Stewart.

    • mirtha says:

      @littlemissnaughty
at least De Niro is a good actor

      • littlemissnaughty says:

He’s watchable, first and foremost. At least that’s his main asset for me. He’s good, absolutely. But also watchable. She is not.

    • tiny martian says:

I agree that Kristen is one of those actors who always plays herself, which in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as far as I’m concerned. The problem that I have is that actors who play themselves (like deNiro or Walken, for example) need to have dynamic and distinctive personas, and Kristen just doesn’t. So she just comes off as bland to me.

  18. Patricia says:

She looks incredibly smug this week in Cannes. It’s as if she likes all the attention from the multiple relationships she’s been parading around in a short span of time. Her ego must be astounding at this point.

  19. mari says:

Another HD powder fail moment… I dont know what is happening with the make up artists but the HD powder it’s not that hard to use it. If you have any doubt just go to any MakeUp Forever and they will teach you so you can avoid to look like you have flour all over your face…

    • Starkiller says:

Too many people wait until the makeup is set to apply it. The trick is to apply while the foundation is still a little wet. Applying the powder on top of more powder is what seems to cause the “flashback” to happen.

      • mari says:

Yes! And because its a mineral powder and full of sillica you have to aply very small amount of it. Even the proper brush its black so you can actually see the amount that you’re putting on.

  20. PunkyMomma says:

I think it’s kind of interesting – but she’s totally channeling her inner vampire with the eye makeup.

I hope we’re done with stories about Kristen for a while. Her word salad is tiring.

  21. Mabel says:

Perfect look for Cannes but the dramatic eye makeup really downplays her pretty green eyes. I love the dress. She has nice long model legs to pull off micro minis. I’m not a fan of her new hair color but I like the shorter length. I like when she wears it sleek with a center part. Not too crazy about this particularly messy hair style.

    • Erinn says:

Yeah, I don’t even HATE the eye makeup – but I think if she hauled it back some, she could have pulled off that red color. Tighter to the lash line or something. It looks really cool on her lids when she’s looking down, but the shaping of it makes it look like she’s had a reaction to something.

  22. Truthful says:

Isn’t that Soko’s makeup style? The red eyes are kind of her (weird) trademark…no? anybody else sees it?

    • guest says:

@truthful Soko tweeted a picture of herself with the same hairstyle/red liner around eyes yesterday…tweeted about Kristen needed stop copying and laughing at her.

      • cat says:

@truthful if Soko did tweet that, that says everything you need to know about Soko. I don’t follow Soko, but from the info brought over from others, Soko seems to have some issues. The 30 year old woman has a movie at Cannes, and she is spending time tweeting about Kristen?? Every bit of info provided about about Soko makes her seem supremely immature, clingy and self involved. I am almost 100% sure few actresses do their own make up or styling at Cannes. It is all planned long before they arrive.

      • Anname says:

Oh come on Cat, as bad as Soko is, Kristen gets major blame here. Kristen cheats on her and shows up with the ex 10 minutes later, and then single-white-female’s her on the red carpet. It’s weird. The pic of Soko next to the pic of Kristen is identical styling, hair, make up, it’s too alike to be coincidental. Kristen’s work may be shining, but I think her personal life is very messy.

      • Jack says:

        @cat

If you are a good actor, you have range. Critics from Rogerelbert, Screendaily, The Playlist said that she wasn’t good.
Her performance wasn’t universally raved like Ruth Negga or Sonia Braga. Critics are even talking about an Oscar nom for Braga

      • Erinn says:

I went through her twitter, and don’t see a single photo of her with red eyes and that hair style.

There’s a semi-similar hair style – but it’s just short hair that’s been scrunched. Girl doesn’t own scrunched curls – even I have to do that with my hair while it dries.

I googled “soko red eyes” and found some photos of her with reddish copper shadow – but it’s not like it’s the same shade. Again – even I own cranberry colored eyeshadow.

And we don’t KNOW that Kristen cheated on her. I hate that I’m in a position where I’m sticking up for the girl, but come on. There’s a certain amount of Kristen hate that clouds peoples’ judgement. Soko seems to be just as big of a piece of work as her, so why do we automatically assume that she’s being truthful.

      • tiny martian says:

I don’t follow Soko, but I saw pictures of her at Cannes (was it on this site?), and yeah, same makeup look. Which is pretty distinctive, so not sure why Kristen didn’t avoid it?

      • Div says:

        @Erinn
I pretty much agree and while I acknowledge Kristen’s messy I can’t see her cheating for pragmatic reasons, even in a short relationship, considering her career was almost wrecked by it in the past. Not to mention that I sort of doubt they were even exclusive-Kristen and Soko dated for like a month or two and few people, unless you are in young and in college, are exclusive in that short of time. Soko seemed exhausting and like she was kind of milking everything for attention despite them being together for like five minutes. I think KStew dumped her for her more stable sounding ex and that probably pissed her off. I have an easier time buying that it was a nasty parting on both sides compounded by an ex waiting in the wings, especially with the catty makeup Twitter comment, rather than KStew Single White Femaling her and breaking innocent Soko’s heart after like a six week relationship.

The red eye thing is also fairly common and awful, I think even Taylor Swift has done it

      • Mac says:

I don’t see Kristen as messy, i2don’t think she bothers to explain her dating relationships. Soko has to know she can say anything and Kristen will say nothing. What 30 woman feels the need to “vomit” their personal business to the world?

    • madi says:

What about her make up from MET Gala 2012, punk theme. It’s basically the same. Only her hair is different.

    • Truthful says:

LOL: calm down everyone, I was just asking about makeup!! LOL I didn’t even knew avout the Soko tweet.

It’s just that for years Soko appeared in France , at least, with this exact makeup…wayyy before these two messy girls messed with each other… so I asked if Kirsten was “borrowing” some style here

    • Bella Bella says:

Pretty sure she just dated Soko to steal her fashion vibe and gain some French cred. She’s still the Twi-hard she always was…

    • mia girl says:

You are all missing the signs. Stewart mimicking Soko’s look is a big wink to those of us who know the truth! They are really still together. Soko and Stewart orchestrated the whole breakup thing so they can have privacy from paps. The cheater thing is a ruse. Alicia is just helping out.
      Soksten forever! ❤️

  23. grace says:

Many critics that her character in Personal Shopper is another variation of her character in Sils Maria. LMAO all her roles are the same because she has a very limitated range (how wrote the film critic at Vanity Fair)

    • Div says:

Uh, he didn’t write that she had very limited range…he said that she hasn’t developed tremendous range quite yet but in this case it didn’t matter as the role was entirely about grief. He further raved about her and the film. And a few critics said it was initially similar on a superficial level as she also played an assistant as in the other film but that the film quickly diverged and changed.

Kaiser is correct. The film was polarizing but she got stellar reviews for her performance from places like The Guardian and Variety.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

Well Lars Eidinger is in the movie. He only does polarizing. Makes me interested in seeing it.

      • lorna says:

        @Div
Bilge Elbiri from Village Voice said that Stewart’s performance in Personal Shopper is mechanical with some of her worst acting tics. Ouch

    • Jack says:

      @Div
If you are a good actor you have range. Critics from The Playlist, Screendaily and Roger Elbert site wrote that she was bad. Her performance wasn’t universally raved like Ruth Negga or Sonia Braga. There is even Oscar talk for Braga

      • Leah says:

        @Div
“he said that she hasn’t developed tremendous range quite yet ”
Thats pretty much the same thing as saying she doesn’t have range. And she doesn’t, I say that as someone who did like Clouds of Sila Maria and thought her performance was good. Yet it has to be said her performance was a better version of something i have seen her do before. Like Jack said Sonia Braga and Ruth Negga has great reviews across the board. They are not being talked about as much in gossip sites because they aren’t big celebrities, but if you read movie sites they are the most talked about.
        @Jack
        Negga also has Oscar talk.

  24. penny says:

I like the dress & shoes, loathe the hair & make-up!

    • Div says:

same, I dig the dress even if it’s giving pirate meets Big Bird vibes but the makeup is tragique.

  25. Miss M says:

She reminded me of Helena from Orphan Black.

  26. cat says:

Kristen is having a fabulous week in Cannes! I don’t particularly like the dress, but it is perfect fit for such a dramatic event. It is not just the red carpet, it is the red carpet at Cannes. She looks beautiful and dramatic!

Both of her movie performances have gotten rave reviews from the critics, although some have not like the movies.

  27. Wren33 says:

I don’t think the hair and makeup look “good” but they look interesting and fun.

  28. Another Anne says:

That red eye shadow is horrible. She looks like she was punched in both eyes. She has beautiful eyes, why wouldn’t you play them up with the makeup?

The dress looks like an egret. I agree that her fashion choices have been rather uninspired this week, which is disappointing. Chanel is generally boring imo, and it seems to be getting worse.

  29. PumpkinSpice says:

All of her make up is bad. If Iowa’s her stylist, I would have never did this to her. They screwed up the contouring so bad that she looks like she a a beard and mustache. The red/pink eyeshadow doesn’t look good on ANYBODY! Maybe her stylist hates her? I would have looked in the mirror and then wiped it all off and did it myself.

  30. drnotknowitall says:

It would actually be okay with her normal hair color and the powder issue. Someone really messed up that powder.

  31. Zuzus girl says:

    Yikes. Awful.

  32. Jayna says:

    Horrible.

  33. Pants says:

I can’t stand when almost anyone does that pink/red eyeshadow like that. They always look sickly.

  34. siri says:

    Perfect in it’s awfulness.

  35. Gaby says:

    C’est tragique!

  36. Wren says:

It would be totally punk if she carried herself with more confidence. But alas, she always slouches and shrinks and just ends up looking plain and terrible. You have to own the ugly and use it as a challenge, otherwise you just look bad.

  37. KiddVicious says:

I like this look far better than yesterday’s Chanel mini, it seems to fit so much better. The red/pink eye is a great way to cover hangover/exhausted eyes. They’re already red and tired, add to it and call it punk! 😉

She does have long legs, but girl needs some muscle tone. You can tell she’s never done a squat in her life, her legs are shapeless. People like her, and Julie Roberts, who have been blessed with the skinny gene think they can get away with not working out because they don’t gain weight, not realizing their shapeless legs give them away.

    • threetoedsloth says:

Agreed about her legs. She has an extremely flaccid body for one so young!

Kristen is blessed with good genes: she’s naturally slim and long-legged, nice skin, good hair. But it’s clear that she doesn’t take care of herself. Her hair is fried now, her skin tone isn’t good, and she doesn’t even have the core muscles to hold herself upright. To me she looks like someone who lives off of caffeine, beer and cigarettes and who never gets outside or gets any real exercise. And I just hate seeing that, it’s such a waste!

  38. NeoCleo says:

Her look is just awful here but then I rarely like what she wears on the red carpet or on the street. It’s as though she goes out of her way to look bizarre.

As far as her acting is concerned, I find her to be a solid performer except for her performance in the Twilight movie series. The twitchy, awkward shtick got really old really fast.

    • Josefina says:

I think her work is mediocre. Still Alice and Sils Maria were stellar performances… only when compared to Twilight. And that’s setting the bar as low as possible. I keep reading all these raves about her and I just don’t get it.

      • Shambles says:

Yeah, I read several reviews for Sils Maria where they called it the “best performance of Stewart’s career” or something like that. Which honestly isn’t saying much.

  39. serena says:

I think it’s the bleached blonde hair (also horribly styled) that throws everything off, she could have pulled the pink-red eyeshadow with her usual dark brown hair.

  40. Laura says:

Kristin looks fabulous! Dramatic for the RC and her film premiere.

  41. skylar says:

Sokos right, Kstew stole your look. lol And its not a good look.

  42. Nan says:

Love it! I hope I’ll never see her attempting mermaid dress 🙂

  43. cp says:

Stewart’s face usually looks amazing in dramaric makeup but here and in this dress, she looks like Old Gregg.

  44. JenniferJustice says:

How does someone so young look so crusty? This get-up is tragic, but no worse than any of her other get-ups. When her makeup and stylists are finished with her, how does she look in the mirror and think that looks good?

  45. elns says:

Tragically Fashionista Punk? This is one of those “whacky” fashion runway looks. If she had people with a similar theme around her it might not be so bad, but the rest of the fancy gowns surrounding her make it seem more out of place. As a costume it seems fine. Never liked the pink liner thing but I could never pull it off myself so I can’t relate perhaps.

  46. Faux Outrage says:

That also looks identical to the dress she wore the day before yesterday minus a change in the sleeves.

  47. Dangles says:

Credit where it’s due, I really like the way Kristen is a managing her acting career these days. She’s appearing in some intersting films and not just limiting herself to the Hollywood fare.

  48. rudy says:

She’s gorgeous. Kristin could wear a black trash bag and look wonderful.

I like that she has been happy and smiling and monkeying around on the red carpet. That is much better than being sullen in a gorgeous gown. I’d rather a happy Kristen in a funky dress.

  49. haley1020 says:

    does she even shower

  50. Marianne says:

I don’t mind the dress, but the make-up is really harsh and hair looks messy.

  51. Jag says:

I’d like the dress more if it were silver where it’s see-through. I think she chose it to show of her pretty legs.

Her hair and makeup are horrid!

  52. Pugundo says:

Is it me or is she trying to be like Soko now? The makeup, dress, style… reminds me of Soko.

  53. Shannon says:

She’s a pretty girl and I like her personality from what I’ve seen in interviews, but omg no with the pink eyes … she looks like she needs to go straight to the hospital lol. I do like the dress though.

  54. jenn12 says:

She looks like Sam, the newscaster eagle from the Muppets. And she’s about as punk as anything you can get at Hot Topic.

  55. Khaveman says:

She’s young and having fun. I like her look — at least she’s not some model wannabe with her tit$ and a$$ displayed for all to see (Bella Thorne I’m looking at you). She is trying for a high-fashion statement. Might not be the best look with regard to face powder, but I like the eyes. HATE her hair. I think the brown is more beautiful.
