In Touch: Jessica Simpson is ‘hell bent on landing a Vegas residency’

When you think Jessica Simpson you think platform shoes, farts, and bags with needless fringe right? You don’t think “singer” at this point, but that’s how she got her start in the business. That and being ditzy on TV. According to In Touch, which would have little reason to make up a story about Jessica Simpson because it’s not like she’s a huge draw, Jessica wants to return to music for the next stage of her career. She wants a lucrative deal in Vegas like Britney, Mariah and Celine. Nevermind the fact that she hasn’t put out an album since 2010’s Happy Christmas.

Watch out, Britney Spears! Jessica Simpson is looking to revive her singing career by seeking out a Vegas residency, In Touch has exclusively learned.

“She’s hell-bent on landing a Vegas residency,” a source reveals, explaining that Jess recently built a recording studio in her LA home and began working with top songwriter-producers like Linda Perry.

“With state-of-the art technology and backdrops paired with her sex appeal, she thinks she can give the other headliners a run for their money,” says the source.

“After 20 years in the music business, Jess is excited to follow her dreams and become a Vegas legend.”

[From In Touch]

Quick name one song by Jessica Simpson. You can’t, can you? The only thing that comes to mind is a video she did with Eva Longoria which involved roller skating. I can name more Paris Hilton songs (one) than I can Jessica Simpson songs. Googling “Jessica Simpson hits” brings up her remake of “These Boots Are Made for Walking” and such singles as 1999’s “I Wanna Love You Forever” and 2006’s “A Public Affair.” I guess that’s the video with Eva Longoria, but the song is completely forgettable. I just listened to it again and am reminded that it’s a ripoff of Madonna’s “Holiday.” If this is true, and Simpson wants a Vegas residency, she has to have songs that people want to hear, it’s not enough to be able to writhe around on stage. None of her music videos have over 5 million views on YouTube. This isn’t happening for her.

Jessica’s last venture was a commercial for Budget rent-a-car. Is her clothing line not doing well? Last week The Enquirer reported that Jessica and her husband, Eric Johnson, spend $50,000 every month on food and drinks and “have cases of the finest wines and champagnes delivered to their home every week,” eat at expensive restaurants and “get deliveries from places like Little Dom’s or La Poubelle.” So maybe their spending is a issue.

Update: Jessica’s rep denies that she’s seeking a Vegas residency.

She is working on new music.

Wow. I doubt we spend that much on food in five years. That’s gross.

    • Size Does Matter says:

I feel bad enough about how many calories I consume. At least I’m not also eating a small fortune. Double gross.

    • Snazzy says:

Greed & gluttony really are disgusting features, turning even the most beautiful into digusting monsters.
      Gross gross gross

    • Snowflake says:

I don’t think I believe that. She’s the thinnest she’s even been and he’s not fat.

      • Lindsay says:

I have a hard time buying the $50,000 a month figure as well. A case of Dom Pérignon is several thousand dollars alone. La Poubelle Bistro (Also, The Trashcan Bistro? Seriously?!) and Little Dom’s are both moderately priced $11-$30/meal. If all four ate a $30 meal, three times a day that is $2,520. So they would have to be drinking almost $10,000 a week in wine and champagne. They both chug a bottle of Dom a day? Plus, she was always a vodka person.

Also, for $50,000 a month you could get amazing chefs who buy only the best ingredients. It would probably be better than reasonably priced, carry-out Italian.

      • Flowerchild says:

$30 dallors a meal is really cheap for an expensive restaurants. Expensive restaurants usually charge some were between $75 to $100 plus for a meal.

      • neocleo says:

It’s easy to spend $50,000 a month on food if you have more money than sense. A smidge of Beluga caviar can set you back five or six hundred dollars easily.

      • Lindsay says:

I was going by the menu prices of the places they named. I doubt she has the palate for caviar. She is a bit like Britney in that exposure to high end foods didn’t change her staples and favorites.

  2. Ankhel says:

Hasn’t she already made a huge fortune? Like, several hundred million dollars? I can’t imagine she’s spent most of it this fast?

    • Mia4s says:

The clothing line has made hundreds of millions, how much of that is hers is a question. Plus she’s been controlled by managers and handlers who no doubt take a tidy percentage. She’s rich for sure…but not in the ‘could never possibly run out of money’ sense.

The only live performing I remember is when she humiliated herself at the Kennedy Center Honors during the Dolly Parton tribute. She’s terrible and should stick to the spokesmodel thing.

      • Ankhel says:

Hm, I guess there might be something to it then. Thanks!

      • SNAP says:

I remeber her “mom jeans” moment. So what would it be called? The slutty browny, fried oreos and aderall shots residency? I can’t even stand to hear her talk, go be a mom Jess or if you’re bored out of your skull enroll in high schoool and graduate…her music was always so cringeworthy and mediocre…plus she never measured to the talent of back then, when Destiny’s child, Brit (her golden years) and Xtina Aguilera were in their prime…Jess doesn’t have the voice, the presence or the it factor. She had a good reality show and did good investing in the clothing line but don’t get greedy Jess, know your limits… even Nelly Furtado and Avril Levine were bigger than she ever was. Take a hint Jess, go enjoy wjat you have…life is better without posts about her yo-yo figure and slurred valley wannabe speech.

      • Kosmos says:

Right, it seems like her clothing line is successful, not high end, but appealing to a certain market and trendy. However, her singing? No way….I cannot see her in Vegas or making it anywhere due to her singing. But then, I absolutely DO NOT think JLo has much of a voice either and she’s in Vegas. Now, Mariah Carey has a fantastic five-octive voice, and Celine Dion, too, so they deserve whatever good comes their way. Britney Spears is not a great singer, but more of a pop star, still she probably does a lot better than Jessica….

    • annaloo. says:

I would absolutely put my money on Jessica Simpson. If I had the funds to buy stocks, I’d invest in water, agricultural biotech and Jessica Simpson. I think the Vegas move is just to increase her “brand”, but I am sure we will still be watching her when she becomes a grandma shilling solar operated hoveround wheelchairs.

  3. Guest says:

I think her clothing line is doing great, the last time I checked.
    Not sure though.

    • Sara says:

I’m sure she gets a percentage but I’d be surprised if she were at all involved in the actual business.

      • Flowerchild says:

She not, Jessica is just the face of the brand her mom is the real one behind the clothing line.

    • holly hobby says:

I don’t recall seeing her stuff at Macy’s the last time I was there. I do occasionally see an ugly fringed hand bag at Ross.

      • SamiHami says:

I have to say I have bought one item from her line-a pair of pants-and they are excellent quality, very well made. If all of her clothes are made as well as they are then they are doing something right.

      • amilu says:

They still sell her clothing and shoes at my local Macy’s.

      • Kosmos says:

Her line is still at Macy’s, absolutely….some pieces are not great, but others work. I have the skinny white jeans and they fit perfectly, and you know, it’s hard to find a great fitting pair of white jeans.

  4. Jayna says:

Ugh. The last time I saw her sing was on that special she and Nick did during their popularity with their reality show. I watched a duet she performed with Nick. She was singing like she was having a bowel movement. It was just torture to listen to and watch the way she oversang and dragged out words or syllables, etc, like she’s in pain, and the faces she pulls.

    • Lucy2 says:

I can’t stand the way she sings. She seems to have an ok voice, but a terrible way of using it.
And definitely no hit songs that anyone would flock to Vegas to hear. She’s doing really well with her other business ventures, when not just stick with that?

      • Lindsay says:

Or if she wants to branch out go back to reality TV. She had far more success doing that then she ever did as a singer.

      • Sunshine Gold says:

Agree 100%. Her voice is terrible. It’s whining + belting.

  5. Primrose Path says:

Many celebrities who are wealthy beyond belief continue to hustle. I don’t think money is their main motivator, but relevance.

  6. Kiki says:

I think Jessica Simpson has a great voice, however she need to re-invent herself to become the singer that she is. She is not a Britney or Rihanna and definitely not a Beyonce. Though she should go back to singing, and ballads are best for her. I don’t know about the rest of the public but I want to hear power ballads. I miss that. Remember Celine Dion and that massive voice or Whitney Houston with her powerful and beautiful voice.

What I am saying is…… Jessica Simpson should go back to sing ballads. That is her place in the pop music world. Also you know who I want to see again……. do you remember Leona Lewis?

    • Flowerchild says:

I don’t agree about Jessica singing, yes to Leona Lewis she has a good voice. Did you know Leona going to be joining “Cats” on Broadway in NY this summer.

      • kiki says:

Now notice I said she has a great voice. She doesn’t have the best voice but she can sing a lot better than Britney Spears, but she is no Beyoncé when it comes to vocal calibre however Jessica can sing just not really well. Oh and thanks about the shout out for Leona Lewis, yes I just google her and she just joined “Cats”. I am so happy for her. Now Leona Lewis has one of the best voices in music.

  7. Louise177 says:

I doubt she wants a residency. As dumb as she is, she’s not that dumb. She hasn’t made successful music in years. Even when she was popular she wasn’t that big.

    • Josephine says:

She also strikes me as someone who doesn’t want to work that hard. She doesn’t do much these days except shill for her clothing line once in awhile, so why bother working when you can by with that?

  8. emmyb1608 says:

I wouldn’t be able to name a Jessica Simpson song if my life depended on it! However, whenever I see/hear her name, all I can think of is all that hair she has… It would probably cover more parts of her than her clothes do!

  9. kibbles says:

If you wonder why so many rich people end up filing for bankruptcy, that is your answer right there. Fifty thousand each month on wine, champagne, and fancy restaurants. If they are spending that much on food, she is probably spending thousands more each month on clothes and her beauty routine. Yet our graduates can’t file for bankruptcy or have their student loan debt forgiven for getting an education. Ridiculous.

If it had not been for her reality show with Nick Lachey, she would have faded into oblivion a decade ago. I will give her props for using that show to her full advantage and starting her clothing line. From what I remember reading a while ago, she isn’t running the company, just the face and name of it at this point. I believe that she is hungry for more money because she’s not doing a whole lot these days and these celebrities aren’t willing to scale back on their spending when the roles, gigs, and endorsements start to dry up.

Simpson doesn’t deserve a Vegas gig. At least Britney Spears was truly THE pop icon of the late 90s and early 2000s. Spears and Aguilera were the top two teen pop stars of that era. Simpson was in a distant third along with Mandy Moore. She does not have many hits and doesn’t have the voice or dance moves to put on a good long running show that will fill up an entire auditorium.

    • holly hobby says:

Vince Camuto runs that line. She is the face. Not sure how much input she has.

  10. Lis says:

She seriously thinks she is an artist of that caliber? I can’t even name one of her songs.

  11. Emily says:

    >>” Last week The Enquirer reported that Jessica and her husband, Eric Johnson, spend $50,000 every month on food and drinks and “have cases of the finest wines and champagnes delivered to their home every week,” eat at expensive restaurants and “get deliveries from places like Little Dom’s or La Poubelle.””

They sound like my kind of people! 😀

  12. Mrs.K says:

Well every village has an idiot…except this one is making millions selling hair extensions, shoes and crappy dresses. Now she actually thinks she has singing talent too. Girl,Bye!!!

  13. Mcbeanerer says:

If you want to cringe yourself into oblivion today, go watch some of the video for “irresistible”.

    • Melly says:

HA! I remember that video! She was in her “lesser version of Britney Spears” days. He body was banging in the video, but her facial expressions looked so weird that it ruined the “sexy’ vibe she was trying to give off.

      • me says:

Ha ha yes I remember that ! It’s her lips…the pout she makes…so hard to watch !

  14. Bettyrose says:

I thought she was famous for being a singer? For being the first Brittany clone? I can’t name a song by her, but I can’t name one by any one else mentioned here, either (I mean, accept Madonna. I owned her first four albums as a pre-teen). I remember circa mid-00s that her weight struggles were constant news, giving me the impression she was famous for something?

  15. HollyG says:

I can’t believe I’m the Jessica Simpson apologist, but here goes:

Her clothing line pulls in about $1B annually, making it one of the most successful celebrity clothing ventures ever. She is frequently cited as being hands-on with the vision and designs, and has been active with the brand for the entire time (over 10 years). She personally is worth $150MM.

Regarding the $50k per month on food, this was something from the Enquirer so I want to see the receipts. However, if it includes food and drink for her entire household–family and staff–plus whatever catering and entertaining she does either personally or professionally, then it can absolutely reach $50k or more especially if there’s a lot of expensive wine.

And finally, Vegas residencies are extremely lucrative because they draw in huge crowds…for the nostalgia and familiarity. A singer would have to have enough well known songs to basically have a 90 minute singalong. Jessica Simpson does not qualify. Madonna yes, Adele no. Beyoncé maybe.

    • Kate says:

J.Lo got a residency and she doesn’t have anywhere near 90 minutes of recognisable hits. She has maybe 5 songs she’s known for and then a bunch of middling singles that all kind of blend together. Adele and Beyoncé would definitely qualify.

      • HollyG says:

I found a JLo set list and of the 23 songs, I could hum about half of them. And you’re right, Beyoncé could do 90 minutes. I don’t think Adele can yet.

      • Kosmos says:

I’d rather hear Adele or Beyonce sing just a handful of songs any day rather than hear 23 songs by JLo, gag.

    • Bridget says:

The line makes that much money, but Simpson only makes a percentage for licensing her name. First it was a partnership with Camuto Group, and then it was sold to another clothing manufacturer several years ago. Simpson is wealthy but does not pocket all of the net earnings from her fashion line.

As far as what she’s actually worth… I’ve wondered, considering her shilling for stuff still. If she’s really that wealthy, why work for Weight Watchers or Budget?

      • Lindsay says:

Even when she was just becoming famous I remember her being very brand awear and looking for corporate tie-ins. It’s easy money, she was a bubble gum pop starlet and reality TV star so it’s not like she had a reputation as a “serious artist” to protect. Even some of the “serious artists” do similar things, they just do them overseas for the lure of easy money.

If stories about how fat I was were plastered all over national magazines I’d want to at least make money off it! She had a company willing to help her lose the weight by providing chefs, nutritionists and classes. She made herself relatable, which is a big part of her brand and consumer appeal. She got paid to do something she probably was going to do anyway and public exposure to maintain her pop culture relevance.

      • Bridget says:

Papa Joe always took the easy money, but it didn’t exactly lead to a long career for his daughter. I’d describe his strategy as a manager as “ham handed”. Take all the money you can get, and who cares about having a sustainable, long career.

And again, I ask the question: if she’s so wealthy, why take a Weight Watchers deal? Because lets get real: it’s tacky. That’s not pop culture relevance, it’s a cash grab.

Jessica Simpson has been very successful, but her success has been in licensing with a GREAT company. She got some good advice and actually managed to take it (which is no small feat). But she’s not sitting at the head of some fashion empire, swimming in Scrooge McDuck type money.

    • Flowerchild says:

Everything Bridget said plus Jessica has always been just the face of the Brad her mother was the person behind It.

      • Bridget says:

Her mother was Jessica’s person behind it (in the same way that her dad managed the music/TV work) but Camuto group is a massive company. They were the ones that did the work, though Jessica and her mom were involved and gave input.

  16. Kate says:

She’s got 5, maybe 6 songs people *might* recognise if they heard them.

Maybe if she wanted to do covers or if it was just a month long Christmas thing where she was like the poor mans Mariah, but there’s no way she could get a residency based on her own catalogue.

  17. Marianne says:

When you asked to name one song my mind went to “Irresistible” and they I thought…wait is that a song?

  18. Donna says:

Jessica’s company makes $1 billion a year, and from what I’ve heard/seen she’s very hands on with the running of it. Her personal net worth ( I just looked it up) is $150 million. I have checked out her Instagram and she’s constantly involved with meetings etc for her company. Not sure about a singing gig in Vegas, but she’s a pretty savvy business woman who, at the very least, has employed people who can do their jobs. As for the food story, I can see her and Eric having fine wines etc. but Jessica is in the best shape of her life, have you seen her lately? No longer the overweight fast food guzzling person she once was. Maybe still burping and farting, yes, but that’s just Jessica, I have to admit she amuses me. Lol (and her kids are adorable!!)

    • Bridget says:

She doesn’t own the company, she licensed her name.

    • Ican't says:

      @ Dana

As others have said she didn’t own the company and is just the face of the brand her mother is the person behind it.

That all came to light when her parents split because Jessica’s father handled her music career he got that in divorce and Jessica’s mother handled the closing line so she got that in divorce.

Its the same thing butt Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez when they had clothing lines.

      • Donna says:

Thanks for the correction. I always thought she was pretty involved with the company.

    • t says:

Bridget is right. Jessica does not own any of the companies that design and produce items that are later tagged with the brand, “Jessica Simpson”. She doesn’t even own the brand, “Jessica Simpson.” Sequential Brands purchased “Jessica Simpson” from the former owners, The Camuto Group. Business must not have been so great if Camuto sold her.

Jessica is not the employer of anyone. She is owned by Sequential, and they rent her out as a marketing device. She is the human billboard upon which companies advertise their products. Because these companies humor Jessica in her delusion that she is a “savvy business woman” by allowing her to approve “fit, fabrics, buttons, thread colors and zipper pulls” (http://tinyurl.com/76cmaw5) on their garments does not mean she is running their companies. It means the CEO’s and those in charge of marketing have chosen to advertise their products by renting the brand “Jessica Simpson” and pretending she is the designer of the goods. And if all the people who are really running the show allow her to do is choose between rose colored thread and pink colored thread, Jessica can’t do too much damage to their designs.

The Camuto Group designs the shoes; Parlux does the perfume; and The Jones Group used to do the clothing, but I read they went out of business, millions of dollars in debt despite having 3.8 billion in sales the year they folded. So that billion dollars in sales that the JS brand supposedly brings annually is really meaningless. Sales mean nothing if there is no profit.

    • wat says:

      You looked it up.

Well, Forbes and it’s myriad lists are wrong many times, as are the many celeb networth sites.

  19. Shshsh says:

First I have to say she is a beautiful woman. But…that last pic is terrible. It highlights how short her legs are and makes here middle look super thick. The dress also is way too long…

  20. Mar says:

She looks awful in that gold dress. Hey body is too square for it.
I would rather see Mariah Carey squeal rather than watch any show with Jessica “singing and dancing”.

  21. Velvet Elvis says:

J Lo doesn’t have a huge catalog of songs but at least you hear her being played on the radio and she still has a musical following. I can’t name a single song of Jessica Simpson’s that I’ve heard since the aughts. No way could she get a big Vegas residency. She’d be lucky to fill a small intimate concert hall every night. At this point she’s really kind of a has -been as far as her singing career. She’s very likable and has a great personality though. Would love to see her shop another reality show. That’s what made her a star.

    • me says:

J Lo can dance and that’s a HUGE plus when doing a Vegas show. Jessica can’t move to save her life lol. Plus, J Lo has a cult following plus the entire Latin market. Jessica has none of that.

    • lucy2 says:

I think JLo is a different level of star altogether. I could see people wanting to see HER, and not really caring about the music. Jessica…not so much.

  22. me says:

Her show would consist of two songs lol. Glad her rep denied it because this story is ridiculous. Singing was not her strong point. In fact, had it not been for her reality show with Nick, I doubt we’d even remember her name. Her “dumb” act got people interested and that’s when she hit us with the clothing/shoe line…which I believe she sold right?

  23. Relli says:

I saw that Budget commercial yesterday and both my husband looked at each other were said, “is that Jessica Simpson?”

Whoa how the mighty have fallen.

    • BRE says:

I just watched it and OMG! It’s terrible and cheap. Remember her days of Pizza Hut commercials with her sister?

    • holly hobby says:

Well it’s better than Katie Heigel’s Nyquil commericial (no lines) or kitty litter commercial (that was painful – she can hide behind that “I did it for charity.” but let’s be honest she was hard up for $$).

  24. BRE says:

So is her new album Country? Back in 2008 she said she was sticking to country music. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20205680,00.html

She has never really been known for her signing (her voice is OK but her songs are terrible). Had it not be for her reality show I don’t think she would have had the fashion business she has now.

  25. OTHER RENEE says:

I saw her open for Rascal Flatts a few years ago when she tried to go country. She really does have an excellent voice but her music branding is non existent these days. She was singing her heart out in short shorts but unfortunately for her, no one was really paying attention. The phrases “Jessica Simpson” and “country music” just didn’t jive with the crowd.

  26. iheartgossip says:

Doing what? Her singing is awful. She cannot dance one step. Nope. She has really gotten thirsty this past year. i guess the next headline will be she’s splitting from her slimeball husband

  27. Kimna says:

I really like her. I used to love her music and I like her shoes.she is harmless, I say good for her!

  28. Shannon says:

I think if she did covers, she might be able to make it work if the prices weren’t too high. Like, a poor man’s alternative to Britney et al. But I kinda doubt she’s actually looking into that sort of thing. I would definitely watch her on reality t.v. though, she cracks me up! I honestly think I could be friends with this chick in real life, and those are the kinds of people I will watch reality t.v. for as a fun diversion from time to time.

  29. Susan says:

Is that Linda Perry in the Studio photo?

  30. Caz says:

Too lazy to do a residency. Nice try at PR though.

  31. Sarah says:

Her net worth is at 150 mil but if they are spending $50,000 every month and not making all that much regularly, that net worth can shrink fairly quickly. I always thought she had good business sense…I’m more inclined to believe it’s her husband that’s the big spender
