Leslie Jones: ‘There are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress’

wenn24544779

One of the great conversations percolating through Hollywood and the fashion industry for the past few years is sizeism. Sizeism in casting, sizeism in fashion, sizeism in life. As in, the “default” for actresses and models is a size zero or (at most) a size 2. Some actresses can stretch it and find work even though they’re totally “fat” at a size 6 or size 8. But for the Melissa McCarthys and Crystal Renns of the world, most designers don’t even bother. If you’re larger than a size 4/6, very few designers will have anything to do with you, even if you’re nominated for an Oscar, even if you want to wear something pretty for your first big premiere.

This week, Leslie Jones – the SNL cast member who is starring in Lady Ghostbusters – decided to put designers on blast for not wanting to dress her. Leslie is what? Like, maybe a size 10? And most designers wouldn’t send her anything.

Leslie got a lot of replies, one of which was from Christian Siriano, the Project Runway winner-turned-legit designer.

Siriano has gotten a reputation for being one of the few second-tier designers who will consistently work with “bigger” ladies. He’s famously dressed Christina Hendricks for several major events, and Siriano has also dropped a new collection with Lane Bryant. Leslie replied “YAAAASSS” to Siriano, and I’m sure they will work together in the future. But still, Leslie wants you to know that she’s keeping a list:

It’s asinine to me that so many major designers refuse to acknowledge that there is a huge, untapped market of women who are bigger than a size 6 who want to wear cute clothes. I mean, what f—king year is this? Also: as I was editing these photos, it occurred to me that Leslie really isn’t “big” in any way – she’s tall and she has a nice figure, and so now I’m wondering… do you think there’s a racial aspect to this too? Why are designers refusing to dress her?

She has such a sexy badass quality to her. I was looking at her commercial. There is a part where she is standing outside her car.. and I was like DANG GIRL LOOKS SEXY.

    their lose.. not her’s..

    • Sonya says:

I can not even tell you how much I love this woman. I am going to watch Ghostbusters because she is in it. Sexy AF!!!

      • Mrs. Welen-Melon says:

I love this woman. She just sold two tickets to Ghostbusters – one for me and one for DH.

    • V4Real says:

I love that commercial. My favorite part is when she ask the guy, do you want my number. He looked horrified.

Though as much as I adore her I still won’t be seeing GB in the theaters.

      • Snowflake says:

        Yes that is so hilarious

      • I Choose Me says:

Me and my whole family, mom, dad, siblings, in-laws, love that commercial. We were discussing it during a party for my fortieth. I also loved that vid of her watching GOT with Seth Myers.

    • Kitten says:

THAT’S what I recognized her from–the car commercial. I love that commercial!

      • Little Darling says:

She’s the best! And Kitten, you are SLAYING the comments lately. Lots of love for you from LIttle Darling. 💗💗💗

      • Kitten says:

Aw that’s so nice of you to say! Thank you, Little Darling ♥

  2. HH says:

I love Leslie Jones. She’s been around for YEARS, so I’m glad she’s finally getting a higher profile. I hope gains even more success and eventually calls out everyone on that list.

    • lucy2 says:

I like that she hit it big now – getting on SNL was a big step, and now she’s staring in a huge summer movie. It seems pretty rare for a woman to make their mark in Hollywood after 40 (or maybe 30, let’s be honest), so I love that she’s doing it.

  3. Nicole says:

Leslie Jones is 6 ft and a size 10? Jesus fashion elite, that is pretty effing healthy. Not everyone is meant to be a hanger. In the mean time, maybe Michell Obama can help a sistah out? She’s got a great closet, but I think her taste seems a little different than FLOTUS.

    • megs283 says:

Yeah – I’m about 6 ft, and when I’m a size 12, I look GOOD! (Unfortunately, it’s been about 5 years since I saw that number. Life happens!)

    • Malificent says:

I was thinking the same. They’ve both got that tall, regal look going on, and Michelle always rocks it!

    • pinetree13 says:

Personally, I think it was about race not size. Well, overlapping discrimination really.

      My two cents.

  4. Susan says:

She looks like she has a great figure to style. These designers are crazy for refusing her.

  5. Tiffany says:

The film is called Ghostbusters and if Leslie has the features of Halle or Kerry, yeah, she would find a designer.

Loved her Blacklist cameo and her GOT viewing.

    • FingerBinger says:

Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o don’t have the same features as Halle or Kerry but they find designers.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Her GOT tweets are hilarious

      • Lucky says:

Did you see the video she did with Seth Meyers of them watching the GoT Battle of the Bastards??? I was crying! 😂. She is so funny! And I cannot believe no one would dress her. That’s ridiculous 😡

      • Lilacflowers says:

Yes! I loved it! She also did a short film on SNL with Peter Dinklage called “Naked and Afraid” that was probably the best thing on SNL in years

      • Giddy says:

        “Naked and Afraid” was fantastic.

      • Giddy says:

Lucky, OMG I just watched that video of Leslie and Seth watching GoT. I love her and GoT so now I want her to do a raffle and give the rest of us a chance to watch an episode with her next season! Please Leslie, please!!! Make a bunch of money for your favorite charity or keep it, I don’t care, just please give me the chance!

    • Sam says:

I think it’s probably more to do with standing. Halle, Lupita and Viola are all Oscar winners. Leslie is pretty far from them in terms of standing in Hollywood. That doesn’t mean she should have an impossible time getting dressed for an event, though. But do we really think she’s approaching the same designers as those women? I’m not sure. If she is, then yeah, she’s probably in for a rude awakening, but who knows?

      • Nic919 says:

Jessica Alba can get clothing, Kate Bosworth can get designer clothing. It is obtuse to pretend that designers are simply overlooking Leslie for fame, especially when her movie premiere is going to be a bigger deal than anything Halle, Viola and Lupita are doing right now.
Leslie isn’t a stick and that is why designers aren’t bothering.

      • Sam says:

Nic, I mentioned this downthread, but…

Jessica Alba gets designers that dress people at her level. So does Kate Bosworth. My question is what kind of designers Leslie approached. The people who dress Halle or Lupita are at a higher level, Hollywood-wise, than Leslie.

And do you really think the Ghostbusters premier is going to be that big of a deal? It’s already a film with a lot of negative buzz behind it. It’s not an awards show or industry event, it’s not expected to draw massive coverage. It’s a summer comedy movie. It’s not exactly an event that most major designers would clamor for.

      • FingerBinger says:

Queen Latifah isn’t a stick. She can find people to dress her.

      • Almondjoy says:

I mean… Queen Latifah is also well-established, has been in the business for a much longer time and has “crossed over” to the mainstream. Not to mention she’s much lighter skinned, wears her hair long and straight and is considered very beautiful. These are all factors that make a difference. Even with that said, I’m sure she didn’t have designers rushing to dress her when she first started out.

      • Golddie says:

@ Sam, Jessica Alba and Kate Bosworth are dressed by the top designers. They wear the same designers that Oscar winners wear. Kate Bosworth in particular is considered to be a fashion darling.

      • crtb says:

Read another article and Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas all experience the same problem. I think it has to do with not only size but these women are not considers classic beauties.

  6. annaloo. says:

I don’ t see the racial aspect– designers clamor to dress Halle Berry and Kerry Washington… I def think it’s a “sizest” thing, and possibly a “careerest” thing. Jones is a comedian. Comedians rarely get the designer love to match the love the movie actresses receive.

    • Nic919 says:

Lainey wrote about this and pointed out how Kate Bosworth, who doesn’t act all anymore, doesn’t have an issue getting designers to dress her. And gets invited to the front row of fashion shows.
It is sizeist for sure, and possibly racism, but career is not the issue.

      • annaloo. says:

I don’t know.. I still can’t think of any comediennes that are fussed over by fashion… or it’s very rare. Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, even Julia Louis Drefus… I don’t see house of Chanel or Dior banging on their doors… I could be wrong though.. I am always open to be proven wrong , esp on this!

      • tracking says:

I agree with Nic919. annaloo, I don’t think any of the women on your list have trouble getting dresses. Fey and Dreyfus, in particular, have looked fantastic at awards shows in recent years.

      • annaloo. says:

Yes, you are right, they do get dressed, but I think I didn’t communicate my point well enough that they are not the A list pursuit of designers. Someone like Jlo or Gwyneth or Lupita will get the glamour clamor, including the press or how a house is excited for pursuing to dress her… I just haven’t see that clamor for the big or the funny girls.

But honestly, if anyone will break the status quo mold, I think Leslie’s the one with enough energy and confidence to do it.

    • Dolkite says:

Berry and Washington are both under five-and-a-half feet tall, have light skin, and straightened hair whereas Jones is six feet tall, dark-skinned, and has natural hair. Also, while Jones isn’t fat, she does not have the slim figure Washington and Berry have. All those things are probably the reasons why designers aren’t interested in helping her out.

I can’t imagine how Jones must be feeling about this…it really sucks.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Thank you. Not for nothing but colorism is a serious issue and one reason why Zoe Saldana got the backlash she did for that atrocity of a movie. Yes we all know designers are excited to dress Halle and Kerry and Beyonce and Rihanna and –

      • annaloo. says:

@Dolkite- But Lupita Nyongo is dark skinned with natural hair as well, but gets a whole different gauntlet of designers than Jones: because she is a tiny thing. She looks like a doll. Plus she is a movie star– there’s that whole intangible enigma about being a “movie star” that is untouchable that I think appeals to designers as well. Comedians must be relatable to be funny, and I think designers take their images too seriously and have no urge to be “relatable”.

I think it’s definite lack of imagination for sizing, but I think it runs across the spectrum of women regardless of skin color. I also don’t see designers running to dress the big girls like Melissa McCarthy or Rebel Wilson. I remember Lagerfeld’s comments about Adele. Big girls are a politically correct statement, but at the end of the day, the aura of fashion is still about who is the skinniest and who is exclusive, I feel.

It totally sucks for Jones, but this woman has forged her own path for everything, I think she will do the same here and break the status quo. I would love it more if she showed up on the red carpet looking unique and outrageous and unforgettable– just like the fierce miracle she is. SHe’s way too extraordinary to be put in the same prom dress as everyone else at the dance. And I, for one, do not want to see her in some pastel puke with terrible fitting from Prada or Stella McCartney. She should channel some Cher and Diane Keaton attitude and remain being her own fierce.

      • k says:

Ok well as someone who works in high end fashion her height is a feature they would love. Models are extremely tall people most of them are close to 6 feet. So it has nothing to do with height.

      • Carmen says:

I don’t think it’s a race or a color thing; designers are fighting each other to dress Lupita N’yongo. I think it’s Jones’s size and her build. Plus, she just isn’t that well known yet.

I wish whoever dresses Olivia Pope would dress Kerry Washington. She has the worst taste on the red carpet I’ve ever seen in my life.

  7. Lucy says:

Drag ’em, Leslie!! I’d love it if she actually put up a list of all those designers. And yes, a good thing about Siriano is that he knows how to work with different body types. Some Westwood would be good for her, too.

  8. Michelle says:

Call them ALL out girlfriend!! People deserve to know who is not wiling to adjust their sizing for REAL people! I can’t understand why designers won’t look into making clothes for more normal sized people because you know they are out there and they would get great publicity and even more money. It’s a win-win for everyone. I thought Melissa McCarthy was designing clothes for plus sized women. Is she still doing that?

    • Sam says:

Yeah, no. Can we stop with this “real” people crap? Skinny people are real people. Or are they fake, by your standards? And “normal” sized? Says who?

      • Flowerchild says:

        This +100000

      • Bridget says:

I think you’re getting caught up in semantics. Of course skinny people are real, but when clothing is designed and presented for just the smallest segment of the population, it’s reasonable to state that you don’t feel like it’s meant for the real world. Consider how many actresses and models have stated that THEY don’t even fit the ideal that they’re selling normally and have to diet like crazy.

      • Sam says:

No, Bridget. Dehumanizing language isn’t alright. You can’t justify it by saying because very thin people are a small segment of the population, it’s okay. That would be like arguing that because trans people are a small segment of the population, its okay to use dehumanizing language towards them. It doesn’t work like that.

      • LizLemonGotMarried says:

I would argue that that is a false equivalency, Sam. The difference is that thin is privileged, where trans is not. It would be more accurate to say something along the lines of, “just like elite athletes make up a small portion of the population, they should still be referred to in polite terms.” Thin is considered aspirational. No one should shame you or not consider you real, but you also have to acknowledge that there is privilege with being thin or lean that doesn’t align with the trans experience.

      • Michelle says:

Sam, I meant real as in the size of the average American woman. The last time I read, it was a size 10. Nothing at all was meant that women who are slender enough to wear designer clothes are fake. Women of all shapes and sizes should have equal opportunity to have designer clothes.

      • Carmen says:

Thank you! I went into this store in NYC that advertised “REAL clothes for REAL women”. There wasn’t a thing in the store under a size 10. We single-digit women are people too!

      • Veronica says:

Are fashion models actually “real,” though? Because what we’ve seen over the past couple of years is an industry with a dark underbelly – eating disorders, exercise bulimia, adult women traded out for underage and underdeveloped girls, liposuction, surgery, and the almighty photoshop. I don’t consider dragging on industry standard of bodies the same as dragging on legitimately thin women. The reality is that most industry women aren’t naturally that thin – they look that way because they are paid to dedicate their time to achieve it, even if that means living on “one rice cake a day.”

There’s reality, and then there’s the projected reality. Criticizing the latter is not quite as problematic as the former.

  9. Cici says:

If she was Halle, Kerry, and Zoe, she wouldn’t even have to blink to get designers’ attention. It’s the most ridiculous elitist attitude from the fashion industry, but that’s not new at all. its just so frustrating but I’m glad Christian stepped up to help her out. I’m sure he’ll make something that totally reflects her edgy style.

    • Flowerchild says:

Don’t forget Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Both of which didn’t get that kind of support or dressing until they were literally too famous to ignore. Viola has spoke repeatedly about how she’d been working so long and it seemingly wasn’t until HTGAWM that the ‘world’ media, designers, etc. suddenly noticed her. It was only then she started to enjoy some perks, clothing included.

      • Bridget says:

2 Oscar nominated actresses. So if you’re at the very top echelon of your profession, you can wear whatever you’d like?

  10. Tris says:

I honestly thought her tweet WAS about race, not size. Or maybe just a larger issue of non-conformity. She’s not typically feminine and “pretty”, but she is awesome!

  11. QQ says:

    BE PETTY QUEEN YESSSS!!!!

Name Names DO IT DO IT DO IT

Also may I add she has been looking FABULOUS lately like in casual and dressy things, I also ADORE ADORE when I see her in that dang car commercial, It just fills me right up in the tank when I see this bigger chick not wearing any of the accoutrements just being bold and modern

  12. Kk says:

Uh yes, fairly certain there is a racial aspect in addition to the size aspect. Those aren’t mutually exclusive either- it’s all about default standards of beauty and who designers want to represent them. Good for her for calling them out and yea, she should name names. She would name them if they did dress her…

  13. Sam says:

I do have to wonder if it’s just what she says. Designers often demand a huge amount of creative freedom, and if the celebrity has too many opinions, designers tend to not want to deal with them. Even Siriano admitted that he couldn’t work with Melissa McCarthy due to her making too many demands on him.

I think it’s probably a combo of factors. Are there designers who simply don’t want to work with larger women? Yes, absolutely there are. There are also designers who want a certain level of exposure – they want some major awards shows, not a movie premiere. Who is she approaching, exactly? There are design houses that would jump at the chance for the Oscars, but wouldn’t bite at a movie premiere. And while I love Leslie, she isn’t exactly a huge “name.”

Either way, I feel bad for her. It sucks to not have a ton of options when it comes to clothes. And some people will see this as her being an uppity and demanding black woman, when it’s really not the case.

    • Nic919 says:

If these designers provide any clothing to someone like Kate Bosworth, who has no exposure to provide, then they cannot use that as an excuse to not provide an outfit to an actress who is going to have international exposure at the Ghostbusters premiere.

      • Sam says:

But whose saying they are dressing Kate Bosworth? That’s the problem – we have no idea who she’s approaching. It could be exactly what she says and they just don’t like her, but it could also be that she’s asking way out of her “Hollywood status” and they just don’t have time for her.

    • Erinn says:

I think I’m with you on this one. It’s possible that some of the designers she’s approached ARE sizeist, or careerist, or even racist. But it’s ALSO possible that she’s approaching some designers who are only dressing the A-List crowd. I think it could very well be both, though for all I know it could just be the former rather than the later. But obviously she hadn’t approached Christian for example, because he seemed happy to jump at that chance.

      • Sam says:

I wonder why nobody recommended Siriano to her to start. He has a long history of dressing women with less “conventional” shapes – did nobody think to point her in his direction? That makes me think that she might have initially approached the wrong people to start.

    • Bridget says:

Do we really think that Leslie Jones was approaching Prada or Chanel? Most likely she (or a stylist being employed by her) cast a wide net and were declined. Jones is far from the first larger woman to complain about the difficulty of finding a dress, I think it’s naive to say that it must be for another reason aside from her size or her race.

      • Sam says:

But that’s just it – we have no clue. And it’s kind of naïve to say Prada or Chanel. Those are extremely large design houses that generally have firm standards about the celebrities they work with. They are also multi-brand houses with things other than fashion, and they often exclusively work with celebrities who endorse their other products or take part in their ad campaigns. Remember when Natalie Portman was the face of Dior, that was almost all she wore on red carpets? Yeah, that’s how that works. Jones, to my knowledge, isn’t repping any particular house with any endorsements.

If she was approaching smaller designers, that can have its own issues. A custom dress or outfit is a huge investment for a smaller designer. They don’t all have the money or resources. Some designers commit to certain celebrities they have pre-existing relationships with or for a season. Others simply don’t want to make the investment without a certain guaranteed amount of “exposure” and maybe they believe Leslie isn’t high-profile enough to deliver it.

I don’t work in the design world, but I do make clothes and have friends who do it professionally. There are a lot of factors that go into whether a designer can and will work with a certain celebrity. Not all refusals are based upon race and/or size. Granted, some are. But without more details, there’s no way to say either way.

And I do find it weird that if Leslie were looking, nobody mentioned Siriano to her. He is one of the best known designers who routinely works with women of larger sizes (and WOC as well). If they cast a wide net, why wasn’t he – somebody who’d be a great match for her – included? That makes very little sense to me.

    • k says:

Ok I work in high fashion, and lets be real. If you are a huge brand (which Christian is not) you don’t waste time listening to anything a star wants. In fact even small designers listen that much.

The reason people are picked are as follows.

      1. Exposure
      2. Free press
      3. Status
      4. Do they fit the brand?
      5. This is a biggie- Can they bring in a new client base?
      6. Connections
      7. Do they look like hangers
      8. It girl types

      Reasons people don’t get dressed

      1. Weight
      2. Status
      3. Not “it girls”

      • Carmen says:

That makes sense, especially #5. Lupita N’yongo can wear the hell out of anything. Women see her wearing something and their immediate reaction is “I want!” She could make a Pillsbury flour sack look like haute couture. It’s a rare talent and most celebs don’t have it.

      • I Choose Me says:

        Thanks for this insight, k.

      • mila says:

I work in fashion as well and sadly everything you said is true. lets just add the fact that Kim Kartrashian gets designer clothes all the time, she is not size zero, but she pays the paparazzi, therefore exposure.

but it is easier for designers to dress up size zero, cos they just copy the whole runway look.

  14. Jessie says:

Who dresses Gwendoline Christie? Leslie could really rock some fabulous high fashion like Gwen 🙂 Statuesque and strong with confidence and attitude for days, who wouldn’t want to dress her?!

    • Lucy says:

Gwen is usually styled by Mr Giles Beacon, who also happens to be her boyfriend! And yes, he does make some amazing, although quite eccentric/striking gowns.

    • lucy2 says:

I was wondering that myself, GC always looks amazing and statuesque, Leslie could do the same.

  15. Samtha says:

She has an awesome, strong and fit-looking body. It’s so crazy in this day and age that the fashion industry is still so backward.

Christian Siriano is awesome. I just read on TIME’s website that he is indeed making Leslie’s premiere dress.

  16. Tiffany :) says:

I love her. Something about her smile just spreads joy into my heart. In SNL skits, she doesn’t have to even do anything and she cracks me up. I can’t wait to see her in more things! I am glad that Christian has volunteered to dress her. Not only does he have experience dressing “non-model” body types, but he has been very successful quite a few times when doing so. When Christina Hendricks has looked her best, she has been wearing his clothes.

    • Fiorella says:

Cristina looks her very best in mad men. But for some reason her big boobs popping out always look weird to me on red carpets

  17. Tig says:

C’mon- it’s mostly a size issue and profile of the movie. Tho minute I read the headline, I immediately thought of Christian S. So glad he responded, and hope Leslie takes him up on his offer. He had done amazing things for Christina H, and I think her figure presents more challenges design-wise than Leslie’s.

Do I think that most high end designers think women stop at size 2? Yes. However, not every body looks good in every thing( hope that makes sense!). A bit curious- Melissa’s line- does it not do formal wear? Bec I don’t think Christian has a dress line, but does designs for individual clients.

  18. Starryfish says:

Black women in Hollywood have long had trouble getting designers and stylists to dress them. Short of being Halle Berry or Kerry Washington people aren’t rushing to return your calls. This has come up before with Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis.

  19. me says:

I must be the only one who doesn’t think Leslie Jones is funny. She’s horrible on SNL. But I do think it’s very unfair that designers don’t want to dress her. Is she only looking for big name designers though? I am sure there are some talented ones out there willing to dress her had they known she was looking. Hey Leslie, f*ck Versace and Gucci. You don’t need them !

  20. Margo S. says:

I loved the hand wave tweet. “Pick me! I’ll do it!” That’s so great. She is so talented. I’m glad she pointed this out. More and more people are being vocal about this which is great!

  21. Tessa says:

    Vivienne Westwood?

  22. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I mean do we really need to explain this:

Talk, dark skin, strong, loud-spoken, not traditionally feminine and opionionated.

Keep. That. List. Girl. And hook up with Christian! I have a pair of shoes from him that I love and that have held up for years, he knows what he’s doing.

  23. Sassenach says:

Maybe they don’t know who she is and don’t see the benefit to her wearing their clothes. I will admit that I am not a fan and after her most recent commercial, where she played a walking negative stereotype I am not surprised she is having trouble with people dressing her.

    • Veronica says:

Okay, I have to bite here – what about the car commercial is a negative stereotype? Because I did not read any of the usual “sassy black woman” antics in her portrayal at all.

  24. Freddy Spaghetti says:

Designers are so odd. They’ll dress Kate Bosworth, because why? But not Leslie. And Bryce Dallas Howard has to buy her own gowns because she’s a size six and never gets any offers either.

  25. Soprana says:

Apparently nobody wanted to dress pre-vegan Beyoncé, her mom had to make all her clothes.

    • Naya says:

I posted just after you to say the same thing about Beyonce. That early snubbing is the reason she only wears her mothers designs for those mega life moments (e.g. wedding dress)

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Aw I didn’t know that, makes me even more proud she’s slaying so hard now.

      • I Choose Me says:

You know I’ve said a lot of things about the House of Dereon fashions. None of them nice and I’m not gonna take them back but it warms my heart to know that Mama Tina had Bey and the rest of Destiny Child’s back.

  26. Naya says:

In her CFDA speech, Beyonce said that they couldnt find designers in the early DC days. Every single one of those girls had killer bodies but nobody (other than Mama Tina) would dress them. I think it has to do with race, size and the individual artists brand. If a black artist crosses over like DC eventually did, then yes of course the designers will fight over her. They dont seem to think that Leslie has a mainstream following it seems. I bet Mo’nique had the same problem before she did Precious.

Thanks for sharing! I only saw clips of the speech and was unaware that DC couldn’t find designers.

  27. Marianne says:

Its probably a number of factors. First being size. Leslie, is definitely not fat, but she’s not “model size”. Also, she’s not some A-list actor. I doubt many people even knew who she was before getting cast in Ghostbusters.

  28. Ginger says:

I love the spoof of Naked and Afraid with her and Peter Dinklage! She’s so cool. Hopefully Christian will make something nice for her and the rest of the designers will be jealous.

  29. MissMerry says:

maybe its not race so much as the fact that shes…more masculine in shape and size?

like, shes not fat or heavy, but shes tall and broad and thicker than a lot of other celebs…and most deisgners do not design for thick or broad women, they design for coathanger women.

  30. JenniferJustice says:

I love that Leslie is making her mark on SNL and now has a movie out. She is such a breath of fresh air. And, no, she isn’t “big” at all. She’s tall and simply not stick-thin. I don’t get why a designer would not want to dress her. How is that at all in their favor? Would they feel the same about Gwendolyne Christie (Brienne of Tarr)? Hmmmm…..

  31. TeamAwesome says:

I saw the headline and immediately said “Christian Siriano”.

I will be seeing this movie in the theaters specifically because I want to support a film with four female leads and this movie has gotten such shit about that from the nerd bros.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      I’ll be seeing it too!

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Same here! I hated how much bad press this movie initially got because they dared to do it with female leads instead of the usual male goofballs. I will be supporting it and I hope others do as well.

  32. nicegirl says:

Yes, a few more tickets to the new Ghostbusters movie are being purchased at my household as well. GO LESLIE

  33. Colette says:

Who is her stylist? Queen Latifah uses Timothy Snell he works with a lot of women who are larger.I watched his reality show and he gets clothes from prominent designers for his celebrity clients like Jazmine Sullivan.Michael Costello is another designer who dresses larger women.

  34. Elle says:

It’s also about the race of the designer being discriminated against.

The best dressed woman at award shows is almost always Octavia Spencer. Tadashi Shoji dresses her. Check out the Oscar dresses he’s done for her. Gorgeous. However, his work is never talked up like the White designers’ efforts. Octavia is rarely, if ever, voted the best dressed woman. I think that’s about size not color. Zoe, Lupita, Halle get best dressed. as for Viola, she’s regal but not my favorite style wise.

    • lucy2 says:

Octavia looked amazing all through her Oscar run, Shoji knew exactly how to dress her.

    • starryfish says:

Tadashi Shoji was one of the only ones willing to work with Octavia Spencer when she first started getting recognition, that’s why she’s been loyal to him even now that she’s a much bigger star.

  35. HK9 says:

She should contact Wendy Williams’ people. If you’ve ever watched her after show, she does share a lot of information about how she deals with her style challenges. She’s got a great stylist and I’m sure they would point Leslie in the right direction. Wendy has also been very open about how fashion people don’t like to accommodate ladies over a certain size and she and her staff have had to deal with that on a regular basis even though she’s “Wendy Williams”.

  36. Guesto says:

No idea who this woman is (not remotely interested in anything to do with Ghostbusters and/or SNL) but she looks so fiercely beautiful in the (2nd) vest and jeans pic.

i hope whoever gets her frock gig embraces that.

  37. kanyekardashian says:

Just because she’s in a big-budget movie (which I already hear stinks to high heaven) doesn’t mean Leslie Jones can’t haul her butt down to Sears and find something nice. If I were a celebrity, it wouldn’t stop me from being a normal person and wearing normal clothes from normal stores.

    • HK9 says:

Oh come on-you and I both know that the ‘something nice’ she needs is not and never has been at Sears.

    • lucy2 says:

There are no reviews for the movie yet, who is telling you it stinks?

If your three costars are being approached by designers for all the various premieres, would you really go OK, I’ll go to Sears and pick up a dress? I bet even Hemsworth’s wife has had offers, and she’s not even in the movie.

  38. Liz says:

The truth is that someone like Washington, Alba and Bosworth have bodies make good models. Not all thin women or as some people insultingly call them “hangers” are good models. It depends on body type, proportions and overall attractiveness. I can’t act so I can’t be an actress. Leslie doesn’t look like a model so she will not be the first to receive free clothes.

Also, if you’re around 5’4″ you don’t have to be a zero, but how about aN 8. I hate when people exaggterate.

  39. st says:

I’d love to know who she approached also. I remember listening to a discussion with the fashion bloggers Tom and Lorenzo and they wondered why we always see dresses and gowns by the same designers. There are excellent designers whose names we rarely hear about and whose work we rarely ever see on the red carpet.

  40. HeyThere! says:

Just popped in to say I love her!!!!!

  41. Veronica says:

I doubt sizeism is only at play there, to be honest. She’s also a darker skinned black woman who doesn’t fit into traditional Western beauty ideals, which I would think perhaps influences that even more than her waistline.

This being said…I’m always at odds with the fashion issue because I get that it’s really expensive but still necessary for the event, but at the same time…it is free stuff. I’ll always give Bryce Dallas Howard a high five for basically calling out the industry in the best way – by giving them the middle finger and buying her own dress.
