Duchess Kate wears a $2900 zig-zag Missoni coat at WWI memorial

On Thursday evening, Prince Harry, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge arrived at Thiepval memorial to the Missing in France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Somme during World War I. Tributes were also held in London, with the Queen, Prince Philip and David Cameron all attending a service at Westminster Abbey. The younger royals got sent to France though, which is how it should be. I’ve come to expect Harry at these kind of somber military events, but the Cambridges usually don’t pull this kind of duty.

I think Kate looks nice here. She wore this Missoni coat which probably retails for something like $2900, although she’s likely had it significantly altered. But I like that it’s memorial-appropriate but it’s not just solid-black. She managed to stand out but not be disrespectful. And hey, at least she wasn’t wearing hot pink. She gets bonus points from me for wearing her hair back, wearing a fascinator that didn’t look like an undercooked cinnamon bun, and for keeping her accessories very simple. She might not look like Barbie Duchess, but she looked respectful of the event.

What else? Prince William made a speech and as I was skimming the text, I was like “whoa, politics!” Take a gander:

“One hundred years ago tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. the British army attacked German lines across these fields. To the young men eager to fight it was known as the ‘Big Push.’ The joint British and French offensive intended to put unbearable pressure on the German army and hasten an end to the war. Most of those who went over the top that day were wartime volunteers. Some as young as 16. Some had already seen action. For others the Somme was their first experience of battle. By the end of the 1st of July the British Army had sustained almost 60,00 casualties, of whom nearly one third had died. We lost the flower of a generation. And in the years to come it sometimes seemed that with them a sense of vital optimism had disappeared forever from British life. It was, in many ways, the saddest day in the long story of our nation.

“Tonight we think of them as they nerved themselves for what lay ahead. We acknowledge the failures of European governments, including our own, to prevent the catastrophe of World War. We offer our humblest respects to each man who fought in the Battle of the Somme from every corner of the British Isles and from across the Commonwealth. We honor those whose names are recorded on this memorial. More than 72,000 who have no know grave. And to those who lie buried in Commonwealth war cemeteries. And tonight we stand here with a promise to those men. We will remember you. The gift you gave your country is treasured by every one of us this day. The sacrifice you made will never, ever, be forgotten.”

[From People]

“We acknowledge the failures of European governments, including our own, to prevent the catastrophe of World War…” That felt pointed, right? Props to William for acknowledging the lack of leadership that caused so many young men to die in that dreadful battle. And if people want to believe he’s just making a reference to the lack of leadership 100 years ago, so be it. But maybe he’s talking about a lack of leadership today. Bregrexit!

  1. Kay says:

I don’t think it’s the most flattering coat that she owns, and I think the hat ages her a bit, but she looks event appropriate so there’s that.

  2. tracking says:

She also looks like she hasn’t slept in weeks.

    • LadyJane says:

      She looks dead rough

    • seesittellsit says:

      Aging rapidly.

And the Missoni coat is hideous – total upholstery. She looks like a walking sofa. The lace dress for all the flack it came in for was much prettier. Her complexion isn’t lively enough for these beige-y neutrals, she’s kind of sallow. I understand this called for muted dress, but still . . .

  3. fashionista says:

She looks so old! More like the mother of these two than the wife of one of them.

    • altariel says:

Maybe all that dieting has taken a toll on her looks?

    • Zimmerman says:

HUro, bu that picture of her talking to William is hilarious! Bravo, Kaiser!

    • Tiffany :) says:

Comments like that only discourage women from aging naturally. On this site we bash women for over doing the injections and surgery, and at the same time we scold women if they have natural lines and wrinkles on their faces. It’s disappointing.

      • fashionista says:

There’s nothing natural about her aging though. She smokes, tans too much, and diets excessively. Probably over exercises too. She is prematurely aged despite having access to the best of everything and living a life of leisure and I don’t see anything wrong with pointing it out. Especially since she ISN’T OLD!!

      • Sarah says:

Yep it is truly disgusting. People deride men interested in Gomez and Kerr due to their young faces “like dating a baby!!!!”, they accuse women of lying about their age because they “look sooooo mature and my friends look so much younger and she’s lying” aka Robbie, and then the women who make amendments are mocked and told they didn’t even need it….. what is wrong with everyone here?!?!?!?

      • MC2 says:

I agree & think these comments are harsh.
But…..this is a post about the Duchess and (I have learned) people tend to be over the top with her & it’s not a good representation of the comments here on this site in general. People love to tear her apart for some reason so the comments are skewed.
I think she looks great & I love, love, love that coat. I came to see the comments because I thought “let’s see what they string her up for now”. I’ve been tired too before (kids….) and am so glad there wasn’t a pap & a group behind me to tell me how wretched I looked.

      • Wren33 says:

I am only a few years older and I look about the same. Some women just don’t have great skin.

      • seesittellsit says:

        Not scolding, just observing.

      • Vava says:

She uses way too much makeup and that is part of the problem. There are other issues too, but if she’d scale back on the makeup that would help. Her newly dyed hair doesn’t look so good, either, the color is all wrong.

      • Deens says:

I have two kids the exact same ages as the royals and man if I don’t look like complete sh#t lately. In three years I’ve aged about 10 years and no amount of sleep (what’s that?) or magic serums seems to make any difference. Small children suck the life force out of you, especially if you start having them in your 30s. I give her a pass then.

      • Vava says:

Deens………I’m sure you look better than you think. Plus, you don’t have a nanny, housekeeper, gardener, or other staff to take care of you.

There is no reason why Kate should look the way she does. She lives a VERY PAMPERED life.

      • Poor Wasty Snowflake says:

She has earned her wrinkles from bad choices and bad living

  4. Tash says:

I can’t get over how she looks so much older than she actually is. That eyeliner is not helping matters. Anyway, to say something nice, she is dressed appropriately.

  5. I'm With The Band says:

She looks good, but Holy Max Factor Batman, that eyeliner ages her. Easy does it, Duchess. Easy does it.

    • orangecrush says:

I could not agree more. She needs to put down the eyeliner and step away slowly.

    • Poor Wasty Snowflake says:

She has never looked good – caked makeup on lousy skin. Ugh.

  6. Eleonor says:

She has been wearing her hair up…probably someone heard our screams at KP.
    She looks appropriate.

    • michelleb says:

I’ve really enjoyed all the up-does from her lately.

    • Tourmaline says:

“Appropriate” agreed… It’s a style befitting a senior royal woman at such a somber event. The outfit, hair, hat, jewelry. A few years ago at another war memorial event in Belgium, she wore some kind of girlish peach ensemble with a Peter pan color, flippy skirt, and hair down. This is an improvement, I’d rather her err on the side of looking matronly at these kinds of events than trying to work her mid 30s ingenue look.

  7. Lainey says:

God she’s looking tired. They really didn’t photoshop any of the pics did they?
And William’s speech was written for him or at least parts of it were by Sebastian Faulks.

    • LAK says:

In the events programme, it says speech was written by Sebastian Faulks. It reminds me of his novel ‘birdsong’, a book about a man’s WW1 experiences.

You can tell William didn’t write any of it because the language is ideas and the language therein are beyond his grasp. He doesn’t talk or write like this.

      • Lainey says:

Yeah I read the line “We lost the flower of a generation.” on twitter and knew straight away there was no chance William wrote it, it’s completely different from the way he speaks.

      • notasugarhere says:

Both W&H read pieces written by other people.

  8. MinnFinn says:

The coat has silver metallic threads woven into it. I wonder how much shimmer it has when viewed in person.

  9. Elizabeth says:

Meanwhile, that speech made me cry.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too. I thought it was very moving. I’ve always had such respect and felt such heartache for those men, some of them still practically children, who had to run into that kind of gunfire knowing they would most likely die. And all because of some squabble over what? It’s heartbreaking.

    • Amelia says:

It’s an extract from Birdsong by Sebastian Faulk (hence the politics – there’s no way Will-not would’ve come up with something like that on his own).
Highly recommended book, the same goes for the BBC adaptation with Eddie Redmayne, also.
      (Have tissues ready.)

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Ah. Thank you.

      • teacakes says:

Birdsong was GORGEOUS as a miniseries, I needed some ridiculous number of tissues

(Also Eddie and Clémence Poesy had amazing chemistry, it tickles me a little that they’re both part of the Harry Potter movieverse now)

    • MorningCoffee says:

Yes. It was very well done.

    • bluhare says:

When you think about that awful day and the entire battle, it’s horrific. The battle itself was 5 months long and there were 1 million casualties on both sides. From just one battle. Losing the flower of a generation is no exaggeration.

My grandfather fought in WWI. I never knew him; he and my grandmother were older when they had my dad and he died relatively young anyway. My grandfather survived it but three of his brothers did not. I have their memorial ribbons.

      • MC2 says:

3 out of 4 boys……wow. Their poor parents….. Thanks for sharing. I have goosebumps.

    • Blue says:

It made me tear up too although it is Memorial Day here in Newfoundland and I’ve been tearing up at everything.

I’m very glad that Princess Anne was sent here for the 100th anniversary over those two, she has shown such great knowledge and genuine interest in the people and the community.

Plus, somewhat it is windy (hurricane season) and there isn’t a hair out of place and her skirt isn’t fluttering!

      • k says:

Right?! I’m glad its Anne too, because with these two, the news would not be about the Newfoundlanders’ sacrifices and that horrible first day of the Battle of the Somme, but about what Kate’s wearing. According to the CBC, Anne was also interviewed a few months back for a documentary that’s airing today.

I know he’s probably there as vice-chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but I like to think that Sir Tim Laurence is at this memorial in case they really screw things up.

I happen to be reading Faulk’s “A Broken World” and constantly getting teary.

      • Eden75 says:

There is a very moving piece at the Canadian War Museum for Somme. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it. The entire museum is amazing, though I highly recommend tissues. It will make you cry.

      • k says:

@Eden75 Do you know if its a permanent exhibit (which would mean I just have a horrible memory) or if its a part of “Traces of the First World War – Newfoundland and Labrador” ? I was in Ottawa last year and got to see the “Fighting in Flanders” exhibit, which was quite good. Speaking of crying, there was a box of tissues at the end of the exhibit at The Rooms when they filmed Anne’s tour of it. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for other highly emotional exhibits to have a box ready.

  10. Sally says:

I have a question. Do royals have to wear coats everywhere ? Isn’t it summer there ? Is she never hot ? Why can’t she just wear a simple black dress and leave it at that. I just don’t understand the coat thing.

    • dodgy says:

Summer can be a bit chilly here. I’m going to assume that they are on the flat and near the sea on an early morning, so it would be brisk.

Augh, Brexit… man. don’t even. Boris Johnson pretty much deserted from his part in it, and Gove and May (who are vile, just vile) are lining themselves up for leadership while the Labour party goes down in flames because Corbyn refuses to go. All this for a vote that was predicated on LIES and the brexiters not knowing where they’re going towards, because if they think the EU is going to move on immigration, they have another think coming .

      • Amelia says:

Holy backstabber, Batman, Gove’s body blow to BoJo was BRUTAL.
I don’t ever recall seeing such a blatantly obvious power-grab in my lifetime.

It really comes to something when you find yourself asking how Theresa May is somehow the least awful option of the lot.

      • LAK says:

Amelia, this takes me back to Thatcher era conservative party infighting, backstabbing politicians grabbing for power.

At least this time it’s only one person doing the backstabbing, back then it was everyone.

        Politics provided all the drama.

    • MinnFinn says:

It was last night. In the top photo, the plebs way in the background are also wearing coats so I assume it was chilly.

    • Misti says:

Summer has abandoned us. It’s pouring with rain here in Brook Street as I type!

    • Lucy says:

It’s been a cold and wet summer in London, and would be colder there.

      • Annetommy says:

In the centre of Edinburgh, every second person is wearing a puffa jacket/ parka/ raincoat etc. Summer can be a theoretical concept. RIP all who died or subsequently suffered as a result of this awful carnage.

  11. littlemissnaughty says:

The way it’s worded I definitely think it’s a not-so-subtle nod to what is happening at the moment. And I really appreciate it even though nobody will care what he thinks I guess.

The coat is good but from the neck up … yikes. Hair + earrings + hat + eyeliner age her SO much. She looks like she’s 50 years old in 1964.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think the coat is appropriate because it’s sad and ugly.

  13. Nic919 says:

She is wearing a lot of heavy makeup for a daytime event which is a memorial. Someone needs to show her how to have a daytime makeup style. As others have said, it also ages her and it is actually shocking how much older she looks than her 34 years.

Also some of the faces seem really inappropriate considering the Battle of the Somme was one of the worst battles in history. How can someone be joking at a place where hundreds of thousands died to help her have her luxurious lifestyle? It is a memorial where anyone I know who has visited has felt the impact of the sacrifice and trying to not be crying the whole time is an effort.

    • Guesto says:

Some of the faces? Which ones? Pic.4 is her plainly responding to something Will’s said and is a split second moment and one that represents nothing more than her expression at that split second moment.

Which ‘other faces’ show her ‘inappropriate’ joking?

      • Nic919 says:

Daily mail has more of them. And some at today’s event too. And compare her to Harry in the last few days who is photographed just as must as her and you don’t see him making weird grimaces.

      • Guesto says:

But the DM is the home of creating a negative narrative out of split-second moments!

I’m no Kate fan, and there are numerous, valid reasons to criticise her work ethic, but offering up random split-second pics as ‘evidence’ of what you seem to want to believe as her inate disrespectful and uncaring nature just makes you reek of the stench of Eau de Nasty DM.

      • S says:

Seriously. Once again, it astounds me that people wonder why she is reluctant to do many public appearances after she gets skewered for a momentary facial expression as disrespectful because she is not perfectly composed in grief. Because she has some wrinkles. Because she wears a coat you don’t like. Because she chooses heavier eyeliner than you would wear. She gets lambasted for being bland, but then lambasted anytime she shows something other than blandness. Mean girls, j’accuse.

      • Nic919 says:

If this was the only time she had ever done this then we can blame the camera. But it is not and she always seems to be the one making odd faces. The others around her look solemn, why can’t she manage it?
I didn’t criticize her wrinkles or things she can’t really change, but her grimaces are a sign of the lack of empathy she has at any event that doesn’t involve meeting some kind of celebrity. It happens over and over again and you cannot refute consistent behaviour by simply saying someone is nasty.

Please keep making excuses for someone that is supported by taxpayers living a life of luxury and contributing nothing of value, without even the dignity to appreciate the privilege she has been provided. I may be critical, but you are naive.

      • hmmm says:

        Fabulous rebuttal, @Nic919. Well said!

      • Guesto says:

@Nic919 – I don’t disagree with you in general about her all-round ineptness but I’m really not seeing anything to criticise here. She showed up, she dressed appropriately, she did what was required of her. I save my criticism for when she shows her total lack of engagement and commitment – eg. the Irish Guards fail, the 30min trips to support the causes she claims to be so passionate about, the limp blandness of her speeches, the fact that she still comes across as if she’s only been in the job for about 5 minutes etc etc.

FWIW, I see the grimaces and inappropriate faces as nerves and lack of confidence, rather than rudeness. She just seems so hopelessly unsuited to this life.

  14. Joni says:

She looks old af and her make-up is tragic as usual.

  15. zappy says:

maybe just my eyes, but kate looks older than willy (on header pic)
anyway, nice coat and wonderfull speech

    • MrsBPitt says:

William is looking more and more like his father….poor guy!

      • notasugarhere says:

I think he looks more and more like his Uncle Edward. Side-by-side they look like brothers who are close in age.

  16. Kate says:

Given the current political climate, that speech did, indeed, seem pointed and specific. There really is no point in otherwise talking about the “failures of the European government”.

Kate looks lovely in these pictures. I have no shade for her.

  17. goofpuff says:

work shy will and his wife came because they are worried they might be next on the referendum chopping block as they are a useless waste of taxpayer money by refusing to work hard for their keep.

    • Nic919 says:

If the premise of the Brexit was that they didn’t want to have to pay for bureaucrats in Brussels to do nothing for them, then yes the BRF should get pretty damn worried because they are even more useless than the bureaucrats. They get millions and for what ? It is only logical for them to be kicked off the government teat. The stock market won’t crash either if the U.K. decides to remove ceremonial symbols from public funding… They are not relevant to trade deals or immigration or anything really.
I am actually surprised they haven’t been in the line of fire more because if the Brexit voters didn’t want to send off money to Brussels, then why would they be ok with giving millions to one family in particular?

      • kaiko says:

hmm, yes, hmm…so very interesting (stroking my imagined Freudian beard)…how DID the Royal Family manage to stay put in all the sacrifice that is Brexit? and isn’t the queen getting a pay raise next year too?

  18. mm says:

Guess her hot pink coat was at the cleaners.

  19. Citresse says:

Someone has definitely had a chat with the Duchess re- her style on duty.
I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more floaty skirts at memorials but then I thought the Duchess would increase her workload significantly compared to last year.

    • LAK says:

      Wait for today’s outfit.

Everyone else is in dark somber colours and cour dear duchess is in an attention grabbing light colour.

The only thing that redeems it is that it’s a pencil style, no flashing.

      • MinnFinn says:

Thanks for letting us know about today. It’s beige lace! The only good thing about it is at least it’s not another D&G lace cocktail dress. In the photos of her standing on the pebble lanscaping she blends in like she’s wearing camouflage. What a glaring oversight for whomever helps her carefully plan her outfits to complement her surroundings.

      • Vava says:

        Ewwww….that is one ugly dress.

    • MinnFinn says:

I hope your right about the flashing. But given that she flashed everyone not that long ago at the memorial in India, I’m not holding my breath.

  20. Emily says:

Will’s speech is good and Kate’s fashion is on point. I have no problem with this (except for the fact that it should be happening way more often… 😛 )

    • kaiko says:

or perhaps never again? wouldn’t it be great if they faded away and all those hundreds of royal allocated millions were then redistributed? sorry, i’m feeling far too level headed and revolutionary this morning. That 2nd cup of coffee gets me every time.

  21. MinnFinn says:

I wonder of Willy knows anything about how his ancestors (Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhem II) were part of the leadership clusterf*ck leading to WWI.

  22. TeamAwesome says:

I think this is Cath M. channeling Jackie O, especially with the shape profile of the hat. I love Missoni, and think she looks appropriate for the occasion.
Perhaps she’s looking so tired in hopes that someone will say poor lamb, go take a vacation. Stress, lack of calories, and ciggies are a hell of a combo, though.

Harry! So somber! So yummy! In some of those pictures it looks more pissed off and makes me wonder what he IS like when angry. That’s a pretty laser focused stare.

    • Tina says:

That expression is so Prince Philip. Harry’s probably better at hiding it, but I bet he doesn’t suffer fools gladly either.

      • michelleb says:

I hadn’t noticed that before, but now that I look again – that is Prince Philip all over. He really does look more and more like his grandfather all the time.

    • MinnFinn says:

I think this is what she really looks like. In other words unlike many other photos of her, these ones have not been heavily photoshopped.

  23. JustVisiting says:

    Question.
Why does she always leave her coat on and buttoned to the collar? Is it freezing inside? Is it always cold in the UK? Is the dress underneath inappropriate somehow? Does she have to wear the coat? But, if so why keep it buttoned to the collar? Like she’s ready to jump up and leave.

    This always puzzled me.

  24. Deedee says:

Wearing a pillbox hat does not make one Jackie O. Not even close. Jackie would’ve had that coat tailored well to fit her. Today’s dress looks very matronly and costumey. Someone’s been sewing dresses out of Grandma’s tablecloth and patterns.

    • Vava says:

That’s for sure. Mostly though, Kate lacks the poise and intelligence that Jackie had. I wonder if Kate even knows the history of this battlefield.

I really can barely stand to look at her at this event. Everything about her appearance is just off – the hair has been dyed too dark, the makeup is hideous, and her wardrobe is a joke. That Missoni coat – the pattern at some of the seams doesn’t even match up so that tells me she had an inexperienced tailor mess with it. Her lace tablecloth dress is one of the ugliest yet – peter pan collar (hello, are you 10 years old?), puffy sleeve caps!, the peplum, and her accessories……….geez ICK. At the evening event I was getting a Joan Collins vibe (watch out for wire hangers in the closet!) and today I have Wallis Simpson #2 to look at. There has to be something going on with Kate these days because she is looking awful.

      • Deedee says:

My first thought, after retching a little, was costumey. You know she loves to theme dress. I guess she thought she would try to wear something that looks historical, but she missed the mark and hit hysterical instead.

    • notasugarhere says:

Jackie also rarely wore patterns, so this coat wouldn’t have made the cut. She understood the power of a simple silhouette in one color.

  25. Pansy says:

The coat’s gorgeous, but it’s JULY and I’m over here in the southern US melting while drinking a sweaty ice tea and running my AC constantly. She makes me sweat even more in that thing! It it were chilly enough for what looks like a full on winter jacket, she should go with less texture in a lighter color right?
I’ll go back to fanning myself now.

    • Sisi says:

I’m in the Netherlands – so cannot speak directly about their location – but I was still wearing my winter coat till 2-3 weeks ago.

  26. Jessica says:

Props to Kate for not wearing hot pink. However, I don’t particularly love this outfit. The hat doesn’t really suit the outfit. The earrings are too big. The coat is OK, but not great. She’s going for a Jackie O look, but it falls flat.

    • LAK says:

I thought the hat and earrings were not right for this coat. Hat too small or too far back on her head or hair is still too big. Earrings definitely too big. Very 80s first lady. Aimed for Jackie O, landed on Nancy Reagan.

  27. Rachel says:

Could the extremely aging photos be a hint that she’s off the Botox and they’re trying for Baby #3?

  28. Amanda G says:

She looks like she’s in her 40’s. I had to google her real age. Is she a smoker or something?

  29. Size Does Matter says:

Can someone explain why Harry has more medals than William? I’m not complaining – I’d give Harry ALL the medals – just curious.

    • LAK says:

They are both wearing silver and gold Jubillee medals.

Harry’s extra medals are for military service in Afghanistan.

    • JustVisiting says:

I’ll hazard a guess it has something to do with earned vs. Entitled by position.
Or its a matter of what medals are worn to what events. You don’t just tac on all your medals to every event.

    • Annetommy says:

Princess Anne frequently has a chestful of medals, as do other royals who have never been near military service. They are colonel in chief or some such of various regiments. It’s a royal thing because they are royal royalty and we are their humble subjects.

  30. The Original Mia says:

Nope! That chevron pattern is dizzying. Why in the world would she buy another black/grey coat when she has a similar one in her massive clothes closet? Kudos on the hair. The pillbox is okay. Very Jackie Kennedy but without the gravitas and It factor of that lady.

    • Vava says:

She could have worn a solid color navy or black coat, but no – she picked this one because she wanted to draw attention to herself when the focus should be on the memorial, not HER.

  31. Lucy says:

Is the eyeliner tattooed on? Starting to look a bit Liz Jones.

  32. Shopgirl says:

Face-wise she looks terrible, which I find a little bit odd since she is a Capricorn and they usually age well (Laugh all you want, I’ll still believe in astrology :-D) She actually looks likes she needs a vacation..

My theory is that she is flat out unhappy, and perhaps is suffering from some sort of depression, and that is what is showing on her face. Either that or she sold her soul to the devil (metaphorically speaking, of course) to marry William, and now it’s some sort of payback time. Her face reminds me of the saying: If you marry for money, you’ll earn every penny.

  33. Mamunia says:

I never liked Missoni, not even when Charlie Brown wore it. At least it’s appropriate ugly.

What is with the age shaming? She looks as she is. Maybe her life choices affect how she looks, maybe not. I’m disappointed to see the concept of looking old, or old before your time, being bandied about as an insult on Celebitchy.

    • Elizabeth says:

Agree with you, Katy, and glad you called it. It’s possible her lifestyle is aging her a bit prematurely, but it could be heredity, too, or even just the way her face is structured. Who knows? Some people do everything right and still end up with eye bags and forehead lines at 30. It’s life. If posters here want to bash her style choices, okay. I get that. But the comments about her aging face are just plain cruel. Give this woman a break.

    • Sarah says:

I comment on her appearance because she is wasting away, and even though I don’t like or admire her, the woman needs someone to step in and get her help. Maybe she’s getting help already, though- but she is almost disappearing from some angles in pictures, and it is alarming.

  35. cerys says:

I don’t really like the outfit but at least it is appropriate for the occasion. She managed to conduct herself in a suitable manner too. However, she has gotten so old looking. Years of dieting, over-exercising and smoking have really taken their toll.

  36. A Fan says:

    It’s very nice.

[*But she’s looking rough these days.*]

  37. notasugarhere says:

New $2900 Italian coat for a British royal to wear in France. How is this promoting British fashion?

  38. sequinedheart says:

I like the outfit however the earrings age her significantly. Classic diamond studs would have kept this minimal & respectful but more modern.
Getting older & looking so isn’t a bad thing, it’s a luxury denied to many however, it saddens me to see someone who is young & beautiful looking so haggard because of poor health choices. Eat some dang calories and put the malboros down Katie..

  39. Joanie says:

    Appropriate and classy.

  40. Penelope says:

Her makeup is so poorly done. Why won’t this woman get a clue? She’s so pretty but man, that eyeliner ages her terribly.

  41. Guesto says:

I think she looks fine, and wholly appropriate for the event.

No fan of Kate but some of the comments on here are making me feel a little sympathy for her.

    • saltandpepper says:

I feel a lot of sympathy for her, but because she and William look like strangers. It’s Diana and Charles all over again. Very sad. Less Diana of course, less Charles, yet still history repeating itself.

  42. Starlight says:

Appropriate outfit inappropriate silly smurk at Wills – this is supposed to be an extremely solemn commemoration where she should show some dignity. I don’t know why she can’t sit still and not keep drawing attention to herself it is not the time and the place for attractng attention to something else or herself.

    • Nic919 says:

But if we point out the weird faces then we are mean and nasty. This 34 year old has access to so much and could do actual good in the world but chooses not to, but God forbid we comment on the consistent photos that show how she doesn’t act appropriately at solemn events because the critical internet comments might hurt her feelings, even though there is no evidence she reads them, nor has she even bothered to alter her behaviour in any way to address the criticisms.

If I had relatives who died during the Battle of the Somme, I would be pretty pissed that this nitwit was smiling at this event. Any normal person who has ever visited a resting place for soldiers cannot help but feel the emotional impact of all the young men who died in battle. Especially at the Somme memorial where the number of grave sites are enormous, along with the large number of soldiers who were deemed unknown and never identified for their families. This was a massive tragedy, so no, making weird faces is not appropriate for an adult, especially not one who is supposedly representing a country and knows that the press will be focusing on them.

  43. Dean says:

I bet you’re head wouldn’t be so far up her backside if you had to pay for that coat with your taxes like I do.

  44. Kate Bush says:

I think we have become immune to celebrities use of Botox, peels, fillers, airbrushing etc so when we see a woman’s face with wrinkles, lines and droops It appears unnatural. I do think she is too skinny and this is ageing her though which is a shame, I’d like to see her gain more weight but then she’d be shamed for being fat so she she’s in s bit of a no win situation

    • Feeshalori says:

Not disputing your entire statement but when Kate had her pregnancy weight, l don’t think I read any criticism that she needed to lose weight afterwards because she looked too heavy. She was at her perfect healthy weight during her college years when she had at least an extra 10 pounds on a very athletic frame. She looked so fit back then.

  45. carolind says:

My grandfather was injured at the Somme and I have no issue with what Kate is wearing or her behaviour.
A brother of George V1 was killed in World War 2 and I think brothers of the old Queen Mother killed in WW1 so they do have a personal interest and I think all the countries were to blame.

Don’t get the hangup about colours on here . What is important is if you care and are respectful. All the rest is just show.

  46. Katwink says:

So I had a polyester stretch shirt that was baby blue and browns that I wore with baby blue flared cords in high school in the 90s in Houston. Same print as that coat. It was the height of grunge cool and 70s vintage then. I was so in style and I got so many compliments on that outfit. All I see is that outfit and question what I was thinking and how on earth that came back in style again. I assume this never came in style in Kate’s circles as we are around the same age, so she didn’t have these flashbacks.

  47. ###stainless says:

why i s the d of c laughing at an event as sombre as this? she looks like a dog…lol…i love wills and his brother’s identical tie…so cute. Kate should seriously learn some fashion tips or maybe sis pippa should include it in her defunct book. meanwhile where’s she
