Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt on fame: ‘Taylor Swift & Calvin Harris? That was us’

heidispencer2
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were a reality show couple (The Hills) who were everywhere at once and then disappeared, seemingly overnight. They pulled so many stunts to try extend their fifteen minutes that I think even they got sick of their own bullish*t. They also got caught up in the celebrity lifestyle and spent all their money, an estimated $10 million, quite quickly. Heidi has several of those Hermes Birkin purses, they have a huge arsenal of guns, they hired a dedicated security team (to protect them from their meager amount of temporary fans I guess), and they wasted even more money on plastic surgery, “magic” crystals, a failed music career for Heidi and more. They didn’t suffer much. They’re currently living in an amazing beach house in Santa Barbara owned by Spencer’s parents and they’ve had several years to reflect on their time in the spotlight. It doesn’t sound like they’ve learned much, but it’s still fun to check in on them occasionally. The couple gave People Magazine a tour of their home and told them what they’ve been up to recently.

“Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris? That was us,” Spencer tells PEOPLE exclusively. “We were that for a moment, so to feel so different now, it’s like, ‘Wow.'”

We were so famous, and now we’re so not,” says Spencer, 32. “To see both sides of it is really eye-opening.”

Now, “I almost miss the haters,” Spencer admits. “Because if I don’t see them I’m like man, I’m irrelevant for real.”

Still, he says he’s a champion for celebs like the Kardashians. “I love success, especially for reality stars,” says Spencer with a laugh. “So when I see Kim getting millions of dollars, I know it’s just eating haters alive. And I enjoy it!”

“We were keeping up with the Joneses, but we were going against Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes,” Spencer tells PEOPLE exclusively. “We should have stayed in our reality TV lane.”

Sure enough, just as quickly as the money came in, it was being spent.

“I was kind of playing house,” says Heidi, 29, of her splurges. “I felt like I was someone I wasn’t. We had business managers who told us to stop spending but we acted like we knew what we were doing.”

Within a few years, the Pratts, who wed in 2009, had squandered nearly their entire fortune: $1 million on Heidi’s luxury designer wardrobe, a full staff (bodyguards could command up to $15,000 for a night out), pricey dinners with $3,000 bottles of wine and Spencer’s crystal collection on which he estimates he spent up to $1 million.

“I was feeling so alone and defeated,” Heidi admits of the time. “Everyone else on our cast had houses and we had nothing to show for what we’d done. I was like, the haters were right! It was sad.”

“We make most of our income from reality shows,” says Heidi now of appearing on programs like the U.K.’s Celebrity Big Brother and Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars. “We’re doing fine. Each show is like an audition for the next.”

[From two articles on People]

People also has video interviews with these two in which they show off their enormous crystal collection and talk about what they would do differently if they could go back. Heidi says that she would have managed their money better and Spencer says he would have kissed more butt because you have to be a liar to make it in Hollywood. As for Spencer’s claims that they were like Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, it sounds like he’s behind on his gossip and also like he’s vastly overestimating their level of fame. Taylor Swift, for all you can say about her, is one of the bestselling music artists of all time and Calvin Harris is a highly successful music producer and DJ. They have talent and skill beyond getting into high profile feuds with people, which is just about all that Heidi and Spencer were good at. Spencer does know just what to say to get headlines though.

In case you want to see Heidi and Spencer back in the day, MTV classic, a channel full of MTV shows from the 90s – 2000s, will launch on August 1st. It will feature reality shows like The Hills and Laguna Beach along with favorites such as Daria and Beavis and Butthead.

Daria’s coming back to TV? I loved that show!!!

  2. OSTONE says:

I loved Daria too!!! I remember watching the top 20 and top 10 video counts in MTV, and getting excited for TRL. Then they started reality TV and stopped watching. Although I do admit at catching a few of the hills episodes with my high school friends.

  3. Little Darling says:

    Flesh colored beard. Ewwww.

These guys were notorious back in their day, and probably more *infamous* than Tay and Calvin, I think Spencer gets a bit confused about being famous and being a famewhore. However, Spencer runs circles around Calvin for being a complete and utter ahole to females. But I have to admit, these two absolutely paved the way for reality TV show villians.

They remind me of Kanye and Kim – both equally awful but seem to have found their perfect, vapid soul mate for life.

  4. ChellySweets says:

It would have been so nice to read:

“After the partying, fame, & the dumber stages of my life past, i realized how unimportant & fleeting it all was..so I went back to school, got a degree & am doing something with my life that actually means something. I honestly say i am now a giving, productive, contributing member of society & my life has never been more fulfilled or meant so much as it does today”

Instead, i just get empty words, living in a house his parents own, & still jumping on the reality show bandwagon😒

Or I can live off OPM (other people’s money) most specifically my mommy and daddy as I pine for the golden days when I was a world famous pop star.

Bless their little hearts. These two are clearly struggling to exist within reality. Nothing new here.

    • Goldie says:

Spencer actually did go back to school and completed his degree from USC last year. Don’t know if he actually intends on using it, but I give him credit for that.

    • Wren says:

Yes but what exactly would he be doing? College degree doesn’t mean skills. The job market isn’t all that fantastic and pretty much crashed right as they were on their downward spiral. Maybe he tried to get a legit normal job and couldn’t. And then there’s the fact that reality shows are pretty much all they know. People stick to the familiar and what has worked before.

I’m not saying that they’re a good example for others or anyone should aspire to their lives, but they seem to be doing alright for themselves. Considering where they’ve been, they could be so much worse. So what if they’ve been fortunate enough to be able to live in a family member’s house? If you had the kind of wealth that allows you to have spare houses, letting your kid live in one wouldn’t be that big a deal. Maybe they pay all the bills for it, they don’t say. Many people enjoy good fortune who “don’t deserve it”.

  5. OrigialTessa says:

He was being self deprecating. He wasn’t comparing their talent levels, just the buzz they generated as a couple. I’d argue, at their peak, Heidi and Spenser got more tabloid coverage (trash coverage) than Taylor Swift and Calvin. That time of Paris, Lindsey, Britney, Heidi, etc. was kind of the apex of tabloid media, print and online. Now most of it has moved online and celebrities are being much more careful about their image, they’ve gotten boring. I don’t think we’ll ever have another Paris Hilton.

    • Wren says:

Exactly. The breathless coverage of every little petty thing is very similar, and he recognizes that. I think he’s quite right, too. That’s probably what made them think they were far more famous and important than they really were. They were getting tabloid press like real big stars, like people with staying power and tons of money and fame. Except they didn’t have staying power, or the talent that such money and fame is built on, which is what I took the “reality show lane” comment to mean.

  6. Arock says:

Actually worth reading to find out Daria’s coming back. I hope they show the first couple years of the real world the ny-sf years and Remote Control.

  7. Natalie says:

It would be great if they got back the rights to broadcast the first ten seasons of the Real World.

  8. Bettyrose says:

Serious question, will insurance cover the future procedures Heidi will need due to complications from all her cosmetic procedures? My heart already breaks for her and if they don’t have much money …

    • Chetta B. says:

All that surgery did her no favours and now she can’t even smile properly now. She was so naturally pretty before. It just seems to have aged her.

    • BTownGirl says:

In general…nope, people are on their own with purely cosmetic work. She’s had some pretty extensive revision work already and insurance doesn’t pay for any of that. Depending on the plan, some insurers will cover, for example, a severe scar tissue problem with implants, but you void the warranty as a result. I don’t know what the heck happened with her original doctor – this was a very respected surgeon who seemingly lost his mind! Allure Magazine did a really interesting profile on him after he passed away, if anyone’s interested.

  9. pikawho? says:

Does this mean that Taylor Swift will be photographed randomly sitting on a dining room chair on the sidewalk will crying fat Vicks Vaporub tears?

  10. Smokey says:

Truly they are prats in the British slang sense. I suppose stupid and foolish people never understand just how ridiculous they are.

  11. JustJen says:

I think she would be aging better if she hadn’t had all that work done. In the one photo, her face looks very odd. He’s always been severely annoying and awful to look at. It should be illegal for blond men to have facial hair.

  12. Kris says:

I think what’s most surprising about these two is that they are still married.

  13. Dani says:

Spencer has always been an uber douche but watching their people video, they still have the same back and forth as they did back then. Like, they genuinely love each other. Also, their house is gorgeous and I don’t care for crystals but that’s a nice collection.

  14. Bre says:

What do they do all day? Do they work? I just don’t understand rich people (well children of rich people) who don’t do anything! I would be so bored!

  15. thaliasghost says:

Spending up tp $15,000 on a night out….do these people completely disassociate from reality? I just recently read an interview with a minor journalist/tv presenter who once wanted to splurge and buy a big fancy Balenciaga bag…and returned it the next day because it occurred to her that she could put two kids through school for a year in a sponsorship with that very same money…so she did.

There is something seriously wrong with these people and that place.

  16. BTownGirl says:

I still love Laguna Beach and and I’m 34 years old. Well done MTV haha!

  17. benchwarmer says:

There’s something endearing about Heidi Montag. I can’t help but love her and I love them as a couple. I loved her from the first time I saw her on the Hills, she has a real presence on camera, more so than the others in my opinion. I miss them being in the lime light. I even got their book some time back. I loved seeing pics of Heidi and what bag she was carrying. I’ll never forget that blue jean birkin. I hope they make a comeback. I root for them.

    • racer says:

I agree. For some odd reason I really like these two and even better they stayed together when it got tough. Heidi always had amazing hair. Sometimes it was borderline headline stripper-ish, but her color was always on point, no roots and her weaves were blended to perfection.

  18. Talie says:

Jesus…even Audrina, who was a secondary cast member on The Hills, walked away with a nice house and lifestyle. These two really messed up.

  19. Naomipaige says:

They’re getting exactly what they deserve. They are both scum.

  20. Madisyn says:

I’d like to shake the hand of the conman who bilked them out of a MILLION DOLLARS on “healing, magical” crystals. . . .

    • Kitkatk8 says:

Seriously! I thought I’d misread “crystals” and “million” in the same sentence….like, what?!! Is this a thing people do? Or collect? Yikes.

  21. Gorgonia says:

Even if they are not my favourite people in the world, I have to say I have good memories about Laguna Beach and The Hill: my father was still alive, I remember going to have lunch with him and after lunch, watching MTV together. We enjoyed The Hills and we laughed a lot thanks to Spencer’s shenanigans…

  22. thelazylioness says:

I occasionally tweet with Spencer. It started as a joke for me but he’s been a good sport so now I sometimes send him a supportive tweet. He seems harmless to me and humble.
