Kanye West’s VMA speech referenced Taylor Swift, Steve Jobs, Amber Rose

wenn29447252

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian arrived at the VMAs together, posed together for a bit, then posed solo. They actually have that down to a science at this point, with Kanye mostly standing behind Kim, or off to the side so she can pose solo. Before we get into Kanye’s thing, let’s talk about Kim’s look – a sheer minidress and wet-look hair. I hate the whole look! She’s worked so hard at losing all of the weight and I understand that she wants to show it off. But the minidress looked cheap, and the hair wasn’t great either.

As for Kanye… MTV gave him four minutes. And it wasn’t a full-on Kanye-rant, #NoDisrespectToBenAffleck, but there were some Klassic Kanye moments. It started when Kanye walked on stage to his song “Famous,” and the now-famous line “I made that bitch famous.” Since Kanye is often his own worst enemy, I was sitting there thinking, “Please don’t make the entire speech about Taylor Swift, please please please.” It would have been interesting gossip, of course, but it would have played into the narrative that he is obsessed with Taylor. In the end, Kanye did say something about Taylor, but it was a great/funny point. In the midst of talking about why he did the “Famous” video like he did, he said: “Like people come to me like ‘damn, that’s right, take [it to] Taylor,’ like bro, I love all y’all. That’s why I called her.”

I also enjoyed the “I see you Amber” moment (because Amber was there, and she acknowledged him with a nod and a smile), and “My wife is a G.” And the moment he talked about inspiration:

If you feel like you’re seeing people dying right next to you, you might feel like, what’s the point? Like life might be starting to feel worthless in a way. I know times for me, I sit down and talk to older rich people, you know, aka white. they tell me don’t compare yourself to Steve Jobs, don’t compare yourself to Walt Disney. My friend Zakaya told me, there’s three keys to keeping people impoverished, that’s taking away their esteem, taking away their resources, and taking away their role models. My role models are artists merchants, less than 10 that I can name in history: Truman, Ford, Hughes, Disney, Jobs, West.

Kanye then introduced his new music video for “Fade,” which is a really good song and a really great video. It features Teyana Taylor dancing Flashdance-style and it was sexy and weird and amazing. You can see the NSFW video here.

I love Fade, great he made a video for it!
Teyana Taylor is one stunning lady. Lord.
    You gotta love Kanye!

    • V4Real says:

Teyana’s body is to die for. At first glance she looked like Riri who also has a kick ass body. Teyana is just more defined. Beautiful young woman straight out of Harlem.

Kim face actually looked good in motion last night

      • RedOnTheHead says:

+1000. I admit I’ve never heard of her but damn! That woman’s body is unreal and she is stunningly beautiful. I just want to hold her down and steal her body for myself!

      • Lama Bean says:

You know Cosmo actually posted something “introducing” Teyana? Then they had the nerve to “introduce” her as a dancer. Um, y’all are many many years late on her. Fail.

      • Crumpet says:

If I looked like her I would spend all day looking at myself in the mirror. Damn!

      • yolo112 says:

..her butt.. i wanna smack it. or bite it. goodness.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

I didn’t get what he said to Taylor, could someone explain?

I don’t know, despite all his problems, I think Kanye is a good person deep down. And I can’t help but like him and Kim together.

    • Original T.C. says:

He means that people come up to him applauding him for attacking Taylor but he tells them it wasn’t an attack, that’s why he cleared it with her in the first place. His intention was not to be mean because he likes everyone including Taylor.

I really think Taylor lying about him hurt his feelings. In his sometimes crazy mind he really did believe they are were friends and she got whatever joke he was going for. It could have been a misunderstanding on both their ends but Taylor was wrong for going full victim mode on this.

      • Bonzo says:

Agree with everything you said Original T.C. I thought what he said about Taylor was good PR move. When he said “I love all y’all. That’s why I called her!” my first thought was, “and look at how she treated you in return!”.

He turned the tables on her and reminded everyone that Taylor turned bully and threw him under the bus after consulting her about the song. It was a subtle reminder that this time around, he was the victim, not her. I’m no Kanye fan, but It thought that was just enough to answer her back.

Like Nicole said, no harm, no foul.

      • marny says:

see, i think him calling her a bitch really hurt her feelings. i think she really thought they were friends and then when he called her a bitch in his song i think she was actually surprised and embarrassed. too bad they couldn’t just work it out privately.

      • Bonzo says:

I don’t buy that excuse since calling a woman b!tch in rap, hip-hop, r&b is commonplace. Women call both themselves and others that and so do the men. Check how many times Beyonce uses it in her Lemonade album.

I don’t listen to that kind of music typically (Americana is my jam) but even I know that terminology is a part of that culture. Taylor has been around long enough to know that too. To me, Taylor came off as overly sensitive, out of touch and a bit racist in her public shaming of Kanye.

      • Birdix says:

That reminds me: Did TS ever respond to her naked image being in his art?
They’re both using each other for the publicity at this point. Kanye’s just doing a better job of it.

      • MI6 says:

Also completely agree, OTC. I’m quite sure Kanye is on the spectrum in some way but the man is a creative genius. He’s real. All he’s doing is his art, and you can see when he mentions the phone call that he is truly hurt and sincere.
If you’ve got the swag to back it up, I say go for it. And he does.
Taylor, on the other hand, has been exposed for who and what she really is. No amount of makeup, fancy gym clothes, boyfriends or fake boobs can ever cover that up.

      • MC2 says:

Birdix- I don’t think she ever commented on her naked image being used because she was on fire for the phone call stuff. Personally, I think the naked figure being used without her consent if by far the worst thing he has done. Parading around a wax figure that is supposed to look like you but naked like that is so wrong…..but Kim put that video on snapchat and I feel like nobody picked that piece up.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Birdix, TS, Rihanna, and Anna Wintour have not responded to the video at all. Amber Rose pointed out that he didn’t bother to ask her permission. George W. Bush announced that it really isn’t him. Trump may have done the same.

  3. paolanqar says:

That’s exactly why MTV invites Kanye: his craziness brings attention and drama to the show and people talk about it for days and days. He is just being used and he doesn’t even realize it.

Whoever thinks that Kim has lost weight through diet and exercise needs a reality check.
That is clearly a surgically altered body. No one diets and exercises losing lots of wight but leaving the ass at the right same size. She looks deformed.
Plus no one writes stuff like ‘ Look at how tiny my waist is LOL’. That is a surprise that comes after surgery.

    • V4Real says:

The ass will stay the same size if it’s a fake ass or a medically enhanced one.

      • ahania says:

Except there are specific booty workouts, which produce pretty solid results, if you do them on a regular basis. I do 3 leg days a week and it really shows. Some of you ladies have no idea how a woman, who works out regularly looks like, or what some hiit can do.

Idk about Kim, but can we stop with this attitude???

      • LA says:

Yes there are but if you look at her butt from the side it looks like a saggy garbage bag. It’s not like she’s doing a million squats to get big glute muscles. Let’s be real.

    • Tate says:

Thank you. I choked on my coffee when I read the bit about how hard Kim worked to lose the weight. The only one that worked hard on Kim’s body is her plastic surgeon.

    • ronaldinhio says:

Kim definitely lost weight via diet. That really is 70+ lbs gone.
What she does once she loses the weight is another story

  4. Donna Martin says:

I love this guy. Specially when he smiles he looks so young. I don’t get what’s going on with the wet look, wasn’t this a thing in the 90s? I vaguely remember

  5. Lora says:

Kim looks good and teyana taylors body, holy moly!!

    • susiecue says:

I actually really like Kim’s whole look here, her body is bangin and I like the wet hair!

  6. Aiobhan says:

Kim looks like crap. News at 11. I never really understood the 2000s wet trend. It only looks sexy when you are coming out of a shower or a pool/ beach setting. If you are nowhere near water it just looks silly and that you could possibly smell like wet dog.

Kanye is like a funny, sexist, broken clock. The last portion of his speech is the only real thing worth talking about because he is one hundred percent right about taking away hope from the disenfranchised. If he had rehearsed his speech and gave it like he really meant it, then it would be so much more impactful and amazing. But, overall, he did a good job.

    • Green_Eyes says:

LOL! Thank you I had such a good laugh from the “wet dog” comment. It was just spot in! 😉

  7. QQ says:

Begrudgingly Kim looked amazing and this is from a Non fan, at All

Kanye I go Back and forth on, I KNOW Why people hate him (his dare to be this self agrandizing and self loving) and THAT makes me want to ride for him, But he is THE WORST at capping for anything not ME FIRST, so why should I care?

That Rant was the most uncomfortable thing ever to sit through, No One Sued or asked you Boo! I Never find this aspect amusing cause i Feel Im looking at someone Not well and Not in control… BUT THAT VIDEO???, Lemme do this again:

*IF I had Teyana’s Body, Ya’ll Would all have to get used to my entire naked form everywhere, Grocery, work, Id be naked everywhere every day

*that was INCREDIBLE, weird and SO BLACK?!?

*Kanye showed us a Black woman that Just had that fresh Chubby baby being sexy/sexual/carefree/With her man looking like GAAAWDDSSS and I for one Lived, Also Fade is a Bop

    • Nev says:

Word. She looked amazing and so fresh. Loved it all. Kanye rules.

That’s why I CALLED her!!!!!! Iconic.

    • Nicole says:

Dang, I got to see this video. Didn’t Teyana give birth a few months ago, too?

      • QQ says:

yup, that was Baby Junie at that last bit looking like her chocolate Goodness parentals

      • Nicole says:

Ah! I can’t wait to get home, migraine and all and check out this video! My fiance and I have been listening to old Kanye music everyday. We miss him!

    • Tiffany :) says:

Sometimes I feel like Kanye can say really profound things in his rants…and other times it is just a mess of words. This time, I feel like it was just a mess of words. I think he is best when he is spontaneous and passionate, and there was really nothing to vent about here.

His video spoke for him better than he did. I LOVED the video. Her body and her movement were so artistic. Strong, graceful, sexy, beautiful, powerful, vulnerable. It was like the most amazing sculpture in motion. And she didn’t just look good, her movement was amazing.

      • QQ says:

YES Tiffany these African Dance Teas?!?!?!?!! *SWOON* she made that Yeezy apocalyptic crap look GORGEOUS against her work of art ass body! whooo!

  8. LadyMTL says:

I really liked the video for Fade, but could someone please explain the sheep? Maybe I’m not “arty” enough for Kanye’s aesthetic, but was he trying to say we’re all sheep? The girl really was a sheep? We all turn into sheep? What’s with the sheep?? LOL.

  9. Birdix says:

Wait–was Harry Truman a secret artist merchant? Truman Capote? The Truman show?

  10. Nicole says:

I liked the video. The speech was a typical rambling Kanye speech but I wasn’t mad at it. He was fine. No harm no foul.

  11. Josefina says:

I still dread him. The fact Swiftt aproved that lyric makes her look awful, but I dont think it makes Kanye look any better. Its still a mysogynistic and horrible line and he deserves all crap in the world for coming up with it. And, lol, its not even his worst line. He has a record with lines like that. Zero sympathy for him.

The vídeo is great tho. One of his best to day even. Kudos.

    • Katren says:

“All the crap in the world” ? Calm down a bit

    • Jwoolman says:

Taylor never approved the lyric. She herself did not deny the conversation, but only that she had actually approved the final lyric. She didn’t lie. The tiny bit of the conversation released proves that. She and Kanye discussed the fact that she has no right to approve or disapprove another writer’s lyric, so he could do what he wanted. She sounded like she wanted to be the cool kid about it but had mixed feelings underneath, which exploded when she heard the final version after her ex acted like he would get cooties from collaborating with her (despite her giving him a hit under a pseudonym). She should have just said she didn’t hear the final lyric and found xxxx obnoxious and left it at that. But Kanye has repeatedly claimed he made her famous, which is a sore point with her for good reason. Might as well say she made him famous, since her fans probably weren’t so aware of him before he got drunk and stormed the stage. They have radically different markets.

Both Kanye and Taylor are immature and operate at young teenager level, so it’s not surprising that a massive misunderstanding would occur like this. If either of them had adult conflict resolution skills, they would have apologized to each other for the misunderstanding and moved on. Neither of them had ill intentions, as far as I can tell.

But the real devil in the story is Kim Kardashian West. She blocked adult reconciliation and instead publicly offered her own twisted interpretation in several venues, just to boost ratings for her stupid tv show. Her intentions definitely were evil. If she really cared about her husband, she would have moved for reconciliation immediately months before. Ironic that Kim the Pathological Liar has promoted the story as Taylor the Liar. Sad that people dislike Taylor enough that they have praised Kim for her atrocious and unprofessional behavior, instead of properly denouncing such guano stirring. Kim’s mother was uncharacteristically right- all this should have been handled privately. And we still have not heard the entire conversation, but only a few edited ten second bits out of a full hour. So we are supposed to believe the objective and truthful editing skills of a pathological liar with a history of creatively editing her own tv show to smear other people?!?

Honestly, it’s no wonder Donald Trump has such a following. Mean is definitely fashionable and logic is not.

  12. Katie says:

He really should address his obsession with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

    • lilacflowers says:

As long as he is with that wife of his, he won’t. She encourages it. She realizes it gets them attention and that is what she is all about, attention. She sat there cackling last night when he was going on about them.

      • Kate says:

I would be so uncomfortable with it but then I also would never do a sex tape, take nude selfies or allow my butt to inspected on live television. You’re probably right about Kim. She knows it gets them attention. Still, it’s creepy.

      • lilacflowers says:

It is creepy and scary and if I were any of those women, I would be looking into a restraining order. Maybe that is what it will take to get some kind of intervention. But his wife won’t help. She is thriving off this and pushing it. Her visit to the art gallery this weekend to show off his wax figures was truly disturbing.

    • ronaldinhio says:

      I don’t see that myself

    • Veronica says:

At this point, Taylor is just as responsible for that feud as he is, so I’m not blaming him for that. As for Beyoncé…she’s the wife of his mentor and somebody he clearly admires deeply as a person and artist. A lot of Kanye’s work is about what it means to be black and therefore underappreciated in American culture. I don’t find his “obsession” with his too far off from his message. His concern is about his desire to see her recognized.

      • bonzo says:

Taylor is responsible for publicly shaming Kanye at the Grammys, so as far as this “feud” is concerned, she started it.

She had no problem with the tongue-in-cheek misogynistic lyrics of the song, but she has a problem with “bitch”, a common term used in that musical culture? Please. If she was truly upset about that, she should have addressed it with him privately. Instead, she aired her dirty laundry for the world to see and naturally, he felt the need to defend himself.

Taylor just assumed that everyone would take her side over Kanye — which they did — until Kim brought the receipts and exposed her hypocrisy. Tay has no one to blame but herself for the PR fallout from this summer. Both fights — with Kanye & with Calvin — were instigated by Taylor but in a surprising twist, she got clapped back by both.

I’m no fan of Kimye or Calvin, but I hate duplicity so I’m glad they exposed Taylor and her skulduggery.

  13. Louise says:

I am not a “fan” as such but I like Kanye. People are too scared to say anything these days and people do want to hear what he has to say.

The song is great and so is the video…as I sit here eating candy and hate myself for it.

Kanye can cash the checks with his a*rse that his mouth writes or whatever that saying is! you know what I mean! Its not like he puts out drivel. You watch that video over and over. Just HOWWWWWW did she get that body. Great haircut, too!

  14. swak says:

Over all the see through dresses. Also, why mention Taylor at all. Just another way to keep this thing that should be over, relevant. Hoping Swift’s team doesn’t answer it.

    • lilacflowers says:

      PDiddy’s face said it all.

      • Capella says:

Doubly agreed. I agree with an above poster who mentioned the best part of the speech was about disenfranchisement. I appreciated that part of his 4 minutes (wow). He could have created a potent message but instead, most of it was unprepared fluff and bother about crap he assumes is important to the world as if everyone is orbiting around his planet.

    • Kitten says:

      Agreed.

  15. Betti says:

Kim look good last night – she’s been looking good for the past few months. Congrats to her surgeon. Plus you can see that they do love each other – the way he looks at her in particular is genuine.

The song and vid are sick. Kayne is many things (and sometimes I think he plays the crazy card) but is he a very talented man.

    • Jwoolman says:

It seems that he does have a special talent for production. He should stick to that rather than wasting money on things like ugly fashion (although I hear good things about his shoe designs).

But did he really include himself in his list of role models?!? Or is there some other West he was referencing?

  16. Almondjoy says:

CAN WE TALK SOLELY ABOUT TEYANA TAYLOR’S BODY?!

Sickest ever. Her body was always perfection but the fact she looks this way with a baby who isn’t even one yet is just WOW. Was thinking of renewing my gym membership but I still won’t have the dedication she does 🤔 Also I’m amused as all the “Who Is Teyana Taylor?” And “Get To Know Teyana Taylor” articles being written this morning. Tey is NOT a new artist but I guess it’s pretty cool that Kanye is instroducing her to people who haven’t been paying attention or don’t listen to her genre of music.

    • Original T.C. says:

I don’t know her but you can bet I’m going to get my gym membership restarted today and put a picture of her up for inspiration! Holy cow 10/10 body. Damn

    • Emily says:

SHE HAS A BABY UNDER ONE? If you need me I’ll be at the gym forever…

    • popup says:

Thing is, I am so sad that no matter how many hours I log at the gym, no matter how many squats I do, my body will never look like hers. How does she have the sleek shoulders and arms of a prima ballerina, the ripped abs of a world-class gymnast and the booty and boobs of the ripest, juiciest plums, all at the same time? And then the way she moves these parts is mesmerizing. She is sex. I’ll be playing Fade on repeat today.

    • QQ says:

      YESSS almondjoy LEEEETTTTSSS DO IT!!!

She Looks INCREDIBLE, i follow her on IG purely for her pics, Love how her and Iman are always drooling about their baby and Each other

  17. ds says:

Fade song is a total rip off. It’s so shamefull and disrespectful. I hope he got all the rights from Fingers and Hardrive because this aint sampling.

    • lilacflowers says:

Destroyed a perfectly good Temptations song.

      • ds says:

That too. This makes me so angry. I can’t help it. I hope he doesn’t think he’s making these artists famous now, because they’ve got so much more talent in each of their fingernails than him. I used to find Kanye funny, but when someone messes with my electronic music and legacy these people made like this I can’t tolarate it. Teyana Taylor is amazing tho. Amazing

      • lilacflowers says:

The Temptations, in some variation, are still touring. We saw them this weekend and they were fantastic, and no, they don’t need the likes of a spoiled head case like Kanye West to make them famous.

It is bothering me that people are giving Kanye credit for Teyana.

      • Pegl says:

        Also, Barbara Tucker?

    • ds says:

They still perform? Wow, that must have been amazing! I wish I had a chance to see Darondo perform. He seemed like such a character

    • Dee says:

      Y’all are so dramatic.

He obviously got their clearance. Instead of reducing his talent, understand a big part of hip hop comes from sampling other works. Are these too good now to be sampled for another song?

Why would he think he’s making them famous? Like whys that even a thought?

Also what was Teyanna doing prior to this?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Quite an accomplishment to get clearance from a songwriter and some performers who are dead. Yes, I’m sure he obtained legal clearance from whatever the current channels to obtain rights to use are but that doesn’t mean the artists would have approved or that he did anything decent with their original.

He obscures any talent he may have (I see none) with his antics and misogyny.

You like him. I do not. Never have.

      • QQ says:

Teyana has BEEN doing Music and Choreographing for Beyonce besides being filthy rich before LOL

  18. Barrett says:

i need a translator. I try and interpret what he says and I must comprehend it wrong. He would be powerful if he practiced it or maybe got mtv to do subtitles for those who don’t speak Kanye.

    What the what…….??????

    • FingerBinger says:

Kanye West fans are the only ones that understood it. The rest of us heard incoherent rambling.

      • Bonzo says:

Not necessarily. I’m not a fan, but despite his lack of using an outline with seamless transitions between subject matter, I was able to follow his thought processes.

  19. felixswan2 says:

The video is pretty incredible. Loved the dancing, and Teyana Taylor’s body is strong! Regretting eating that whole baguette last night! 🙂

  20. jlee says:

Kims’ dress is trashy but I’m sure it cost thousands. What I love about her look is the jewelry! 24k gold is my favorite & the pieces are just stunning.

  21. Michelina says:

I flip-flop on Kanye so often, but he’s not even wrong when he compares himself to the greats anymore. There is no denying that anything he touches turns to gold. He singlehandedly revived Adidas. People of all ages, from all walks of life wear Yeezy’s simply because it’s his shoe. He really is that influential, whether people including myself like him or not. I LOVED the video for “Fade.”

With that being said, he still gives me vibes like he’s a completely different person off the stage, and I think his only child complex/syndrome takes over when he’s given a microphone. He loves attention and it’s obvious. He still brings up Taylor and Amber because he enjoys the attention doing that brings. He refers to Kim as a “G” for “letting him” shout out Amber, but come on, does anyone think she really has any control? Maybe off the stage, but when he’s up there I think he’s just on autopilot, which would explain why he rambles and becomes so incoherent.

I thought Kim looked gorgeous, and I’m the farthest thing from a fan of hers. I actually liked her hair because personally I think when Kim doesn’t look like she’s trying hard, she’s an absolute knockout. I loved her with the short hair because for once, she didn’t look like she spent 13 hours a day getting ready (I’m sure she still did). On this particular red carpet, I loved her hair because it looked “undone” and I think that’s such a good look for her.

  22. YupYepYam says:

What is wrong with her left eye? This is the second times I saw her eye wonky like that.

  23. sherry says:

I love Kanye! And I love Kanye and Kim together! I hope they last forever. My daughter’s response to Kim’s hair was, “She looks like she just got out of the shower.” I kind of liked the look.

  24. me says:

His rant wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. But he needs to stop talking about Taylor now…it’s getting stupid. His new video was interesting…the song is good though. I just think this years VMA’s were one long boner fest for guys (and some ladies). I mean all I saw was booty and underboob the whole night while the men wore layers of clothing.

  25. Lexie says:

All I know is that if MTV gave me four minutes to say anything I wanted, I’d maybe write something out, practice a bit, and try to make those minutes count. Kanye made certain seconds count, with rambling in between. But that’s why Ye is Ye…

  26. Jade says:

I was actually excited for a second when Kanye mentioned the violence in Chicago but then he went on to talk about taylor and kim, lame. Teyanna looked amazing but I’m so sick of music videos featuring nearly naked women, there has got to be more creative ideas out there

    • Tiffany :) says:

“I was actually excited for a second when Kanye mentioned the violence in Chicago but then he went on to talk about taylor and kim, lame”

EXACTLY! He started to talk about something that truly mattered…and then he dropped it so he could go back to the stupid tabloid stuff that has no meaning. I just keep wondering why he hasn’t been like Beyoncé, and really dived into the big issues of our day. There is just so much fertile ground for artistic statement!

      • jeanpierre says:

I’ve been a long time fan of Beyoncé and Kanye. I’d never thought Beyoncé would one day become a far more consistent conscient artist than Kanye. And yet, here we are.
If only we could have new Bey and old Ye right now.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I agree, jeanpierre, I never would have predicted this!

  27. Erica_V says:

Sometimes I’m interested in what Kanye has to say – and then I remember how he sexually exploited women by using their naked likeness without consent for his amusement and NOPE.

Y’all can keep him and his “genius”.

  28. Veronica says:

I agree that the dress isn’t very luxe, but it actually FITS, so she actually looks pretty good to me.

Kanye grew on me a little here. I think he needs to work on a few (a lot of?) things and really needs to get his shit together financially, but he’s got the talent and the social consciousness to do great things with his music if he wants to. I just hope he gets back there.

  29. Amanda G says:

I liked his shout out to Amber. Boy is obsessed with her.

  30. Camille says:

Terrible song, hated it. Video wasn’t as great as I thought it would be due to all the praise here.

And what the hell is up with Kims face, she has major wonk eye happening, wtf.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that MTV used Kanye, that they were hoping he will shoot himself in the foot with his rambling? I really dislike him, but I think he’s not malevolent in any way and shouldn’t be taken advantage of like that, especially because I don’t believe he was in on the joke?

I’m bothered by it. MTV deliberately courts controversy and they were hoping for some by slotting him like that. I am also bothered by the fact that his wife clearly encouraged him to do it.

Well, Kim is Kim. I think she does love him. But I also think she’s using his PR-shortcomings for her own benefit, and I wonder will she stop if there’s ever an actual possible disaster at hand. She lives for any sort of attention. Unlike Kanye, who can say awkward things but is in essence harmless, I find her quite vile.

Hate this wet look that seems to be popular now. I’m glad Kanye kept it classy, it was a really good speech 🙂
