Rooney Mara in Louis Vuitton at TIFF ‘Una’ premiere: lovely or miserable?

For some reason, I enjoy Rooney Mara’s misery. It makes me happy. It is, perhaps, my constant. Rooney has been in Toronto promoting several projects at TIFF. Over the weekend, it was Lion, a film where she has a supporting role and she looked absolutely PAINED on the red carpet. These photos are from last night’s premiere of Una, a film in which she has a lead role. And she perked up for a little bit, perhaps because the film is being sold on her name. Perhaps she perked up a bit because the film actually does need to be sold – it still doesn’t have American distribution, despite the fact that many critics are calling it one of Rooney’s best performances. More on that in a moment!

First, let’s talk about her dress. It’s Louis Vuitton and it looks like they tailored it specifically for Rooney’s very small proportions. The leather “vest” part looks like it fits like a glove. I actually love this on Rooney and it suits her really well. It might even be one of the best LV dresses I’ve seen in a while. How is it that LV got it right for Rooney but they’re constantly giving Alicia Vikander all of the milkmaid costumes?

As for the movie Una… Rooney plays a woman who was abused at the age of 13, and she creates a plan to confront the man who abused her as a child. The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn (as the abuser) and Riz Ahmed (as Una’s new friend). It looks interesting, but… I also sort of get why the film is still looking for distribution.

the bustier part is fantastic but the bottom looks like leftovers of fabrics sown in the basement at the last second from 2 different people.

I hate the dress and I usually like her style. Alicia’s kilkmaid monstrosity looked better rhan thism

    Remember her in Social Network?
Her character was so lively, gorgeous, expressive.

Pics of her on the red carpet and virtually everywhere else are devoid of any life.
    It’s strange.

She’s a great talent, though…gotta give her that.

And knowing her mom from college days, perhaps she’s just as shy and that’s what’s revealed on the carpet.

I agree, her role as Erica Albright has been my favorite from The Social Network.

Thanks for correcting the name of the movie for me!

Yes, she played a great role and her beauty was obvious in that movie.
I’d like to see her more carefree on the carpet, no?

    LOLOL Rooney Mara=Sad Mime

  7. lilacflowers says:

She ALMOST smiled in that top picture!

  8. boredblond says:

Pained? This is the closest to a ‘smile’ I can recall..she always has that newly-electric shock therapy-blank look

  9. eggy weggs says:

A young Eggy Weggs (and young extends to about age 36) never smiled for photos, even though she has lovely teefus for which her parents laid out a righteous amount of $$$ (before the America middle class disappeared). Indeed, a young me thought a smile looked goofy and projected a lack of gravitas…and that didn’t fit in with my overall image. Now, I like smiling, life is short, and our lower primate brains seem to respond well to smiles, both from ourselves and others.

I might be wrong, but I think Rooney pulls this face/never smiles is because she thinks it makes her look emotionally substantial. Deep.

She could truly rule Hollywood if she would jazz up her look and be more personable. I guess misery is just her “thing.”

  11. Dolkite says:

30 years from now, she’s going to be playing the Wicked Stepmother in Cinderella.

  12. Chaine says:

I dislike this dress, something about the way it is proportioned makes it look like her bust hangs almost down on her stomach.

  13. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Miserable :/ I wonder if she is in actual pain. I have major spinal problems, constant pain & hold myself stiffly. Or maybe she’s anxious.

  14. Margo S. says:

She just stuck with the girl with dragon tattoo look didn’t she. I guess the angsty “I hate my parents” look works. But she could switch it up a bit!
