Sarah Jessica Parker in a rhinestone’d Dolce & Gabbana: awful, cheap or fine?

wenn29631607

I haven’t spent much time discussing Sarah Jessica Parker’s big return to HBO. Probably because I think her new show, Divorce, looks really… privileged? Like, the show is about two rich white people getting a divorce in New York – although they own multiple homes – and all of their friends are white and rich and there are so many emotions! Like, if this was done as a glitzy soap opera, I might understand the vibe. But there’s an earnestness to it, like we’re supposed to really, really care. Here’s the trailer:

Anyway, the premiere was held last night in NYC and Sarah Jessica wore this Dolce & Gabbana dress which is just… bad. Cheap. Awful. Tacky. Ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy SJP’s transition from 30-something fashionista (the Sex & the City days) to a more mature fashion matron at the age of 51. She still has fun with fashion and you can tell that she still loves getting dressed up and all of that. But this looks like a cheap party dress that has cheap rhinestone jewelry glued across the bust. It’s AWFUL!

I’m also including some photos of SJP with her husband, SJP with her SATC buddies Cynthia Nixon and Mario Cantone, SJP’s costar Thomas Haden Church and… Jerry Seinfeld and his wife Jessica. Because I know you guys LOVE Jessica Seinfeld.

  1. Kate says:

SJP’s heavy eye make up is what looks horrible! Her eyes look like two black slits. The dress is so gaudy.

  2. als says:

I feel this is a Cannes or Venice look, it has a decadent, ‘the shinier the better’ kind of feeling which I like.

    • dodgy says:

      Same, same.

I think the dress might have been better at a tea length (mid calf) than the awkward length it’s at now.

  3. Birdix says:

    Cynthia Nixon looks great.

    • Kitten says:

The dress is decent but could be better-fitted around the bust area. But Cynthia has the worst posture..I always noticed it on SATC–the sloped shoulders and hunched back.
She has a beautiful, tall statuesque figure–she should showcase that by holding herself up high. Oh well. Still love her.

SJP’s dress…sigh. It wouldn’t be completely awful if they skipped the rhinestones or maybe did fine beadwork instead of the gaudy bedazzling.

    • HappyMom says:

Better than everyone else for sure.

    • Locke Lamora says:

She does, although she looks better with red hair. Even if she’s a natural blonde.
Miranda was the best character on SATC, wasn’t she? I never understood why no one ever wanted to be her when they picked SATC characters.

      • Bros says:

I always did! she was the smartest one of them. and also cynthia nixon was hands down the best actress of the four.

      • susiecue says:

She was always my fave character by far. I thought she was the best actress also.

      • LoveIsBlynd says:

Yeah but as the cliche went- the “smart one” (Miranda) was the least sexy. The one who spent her mortgage on trendy couture (Kerry) had all the men.

    • Stella says:

She really does. I don’t mind her style… it’s her.

SJP’s dress is a good color on her, but I hate the lace, the jewels and pretty much everything else about it.

Jessica dressed for a supermarket outing.

  4. LinaLamont says:

    SJP dress
    My 5-year-old self says YES!!!
    My grown-up self can’t decide.

She’s one of those people that can pull off a lot of iffy clothes.

    • MissMerry says:

I feel like her past as ‘carrie’ helps her with that.
lots of her outfits are almost ‘forgivable’ because we’re used to seeing her as Carrie in crazy outfits.

I think it’s pretty sweet that she has that freedom in a way…she can take those chances and not totally get dragged through the mud about it because, hey, she played Carrie and maybe that outfit makes sense.

IDK I appreciate that she tries funky things and sometimes gets away with it 🙂

      • Lyka says:

Yeah, I have to agree. I don’t always love her looks, but she definitely dresses with an air of confidence. I think that goes a long way in selling her style.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

I have mixed feelings about it too. I think I would’ve liked it better if SJP didn’t have so many rhinestones on the front and if the skirt had been shorter.

  5. Astrid says:

Yuk. I’ve never understood her style and this is another example. The center hair part, the too heavy eye makeup and awful clothes.

  6. Minxx says:

I wanted to like it, I really did. But you’re right, it’s awful. Tacky and desperate. She wants to remain Carrie but it’s not working for her anymore. She should hire a stylist and reinvent herself, step out of her comfort zone, starting with new eye makeup and hair. Cynthia looks lovely.
Jessica S – thirsty as ever.

  7. Bananas says:

    Silly dress, interesting shoes.

  8. Anniefannie says:

Jessica Seinfeild looks like Tatum O’neil during the SITC days!

  9. minx says:

I like SJP but this dress is cheap looking and overwhelms her small frame.
And I know she has her own look, but the heavy eye makeup and long ombré center-parted hair does not flatter her face. She needs something softer and more–I hate to say it–age appropriate. She’s not Carrie Bradshaw.

  10. Skyblue says:

I like the dress but like Linalamont mentioned maybe that is the five year old in me speaking. However…I love her copper colored shoes! Gorgeous!!!!

  11. SM says:

SJP was on one of the most iconic shows ever with the Sex and the City. But looking at this trailer it seems cheap. I am not sure if it will be worth the time

  12. Belle Epoch says:

Hideous dress. The rhinestones kill it.

Think of all the other things she COULD have worn.

  13. frosty says:

I can’t with the cheap “satin” shoes.

  14. Almondjoy says:

I’m a sucker for decadence and those who can pull it off. I love this look! I’ve always been a huge fan of her style. It’s different and bold and nothing like the cookie cutter dresses we usually see on the red carpet.

  15. velourazure says:

Why does SJP insist on that eye makeup? It’s beyond hideous. I’m sure she looks much nicer without it.

    • minx says:

I don’t know. Maybe she thinks that’s her signature look but it’s harsh and ages her.
CN is the same age and her eye makeup is much prettier,

  16. VegasSchmagus says:

    was Matthew Broderick there?

  17. Chinoiserie says:

A couple getting divorced for no apparent reason (thay could be interesting) is not enough for a premise of a TV show. If this show does not have anything else going on I do not know why it would be worth watching.

I kind of like the dress even if there are a bit too much rhinestones. And she is so tiny these kind of dresses just swallow her in a way.

  18. MrsBPitt says:

I’ve never been a fan of Thomas Hayden Church….I think I’ll skip this show!

  19. Seraphina says:

I love the color, style and cut. But the rhinstones should have been more delicate. Thumbs down D&C

  20. DesertReal says:

    That show looks bad.
    I’m not sorry, either.
Parker has always been twee & that dress she has on is cray-zee!
My 88 year old shade throwing grandma has one just like it.

  21. Jessie says:

Someone at HBO was drunk when they signed this show, it looks abysmal. Between this piece of crap and Westworld, they’ve been flushing a lot of money lately…

I like SJP as a person (loved her on that ancestry show?) but I usually can’t stand the characters she plays: spoiled, rich, cranky NYC socialites. Speaking of which, Jessica Seinfeld looks like she’s in an 80s cover band…

  22. Zuzus Girl says:

She wears the same silhouette in different colors and fabric, over and over. The style looks good on her but it’s boring. Also she has worn that raccoon eye make-up for too many years and it does not flatter her face at all. She would look much prettier (with more visible eyes) if she lightened up her routine.

  23. spidey says:

Get rid of the stonework, (too much with the lace) add a nice diamond necklace. And get some shoes that go with the outfit.

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Cosign to all of that, @spidey. And I’ll add “lighten up on the eye spackle”.

  24. CityGirl says:

    I like her shoes though

  25. Guesto says:

Sharon Horgan wrote Divorce. She’s a seriously funny, gritty, warts-n-all award-winning writer. She’s had huge success this side of the pond with both ‘Pulling’ and ‘Catastrophe’, the latter of which got an EMMY nominee for Outstanding Comedy Writing – so I’ll be really surprised if Divorce isn’t up to her usual high standards.

  26. Onerous says:

Her dress literally looks like a ballet costume… it looks like she strolled into ABT and raided the costume department and then wore it out. Weird.

    • Beatrice says:

You are so nice to liken it to a ballet costume. The bad me first thought Disney on Ice costume.

  27. TK says:

“Milkmaid night out” on bottom, Vegas showgirl on top. What’s not to love? I am not, however, digging those shoes.

  28. Jess says:

    I love Mario!

  29. mellie says:

Oh no… SJP, I’m so sad for you. Cynthia Nixon looks amazing! No comment on the Seinfelds.

  30. JenniferJustice says:

SJP always wears the most gaudy over-the-top fashion, but I’m used to it…from her. She is too short for that length and crenalin. It looks like her witch character from Hokus Pokus is going to a ball. And yes, to the comments re too much eye make-up – too much make-up period ala pressed cake foundation courtesy of 80s Merle Norman.

    Love Cynthia’s dress.

  31. mazzie says:

I adore the bodice. It makes my inner magpie happy.

  32. sabstar says:

Cool me crazy I like this.

  33. serena says:

It looks like a poshier version of ‘Girlfriend guide to divorce’ (which I absolutely love).

  34. Ladiabla says:

Still love SJP but this is dress is a no (and I like lace dresses). Maybe it’s the rhinestone-y beading, maybe it’s the shoes- they remind me of the shoes you bought at baker’s and then had dyed to match your dress for a quinceañera. I think my dama dress was lace too and it still looked better than this (and that was 25+yrs ago). She can still rock a more decadent look without resorting to this. And has been doing her eye makeup since SATC2? Fire them.

  35. Classy and Sassy says:

    I quite like the dress.

  36. linda says:

Her dress looks like a prom dress and somebody went crazy with a bedazzler… her pointed toe shoes look like she (and that dress) landed on the witch from the Wizard of Oz… just sayin’

  37. Malificent says:

Why is Jessica Seinfeld baring her teeth at another primate?

  38. vava says:

I can’t get over her eye makeup. It really makes her eyes look smaller.

  39. Ange says:

Yay Thomas haden church! Dating myself here but the show he did with Debra Messing (before W&G) was one of the funniest things ever, Ned & Stacey. I’ll always have a soft spot for him because of that show.

SJP needs to look to the makeup she often sported on sex and the city for inspiration. They would sometimes do really cute light eye-liner and it took years off her.

  40. Georgia says:

SJP’s dress is uniquely divine. I love it and her shoes.

  41. NobleRed says:

I like the dress. She looks beautiful. The show looks interesting.
