Here are some photos from last night’s London premiere/screening/event for Doctor Strange. I’m covering the photos of Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie separately! Mostly because I wanted to give Rachel McAdams her own post. Here’s the thing: I like Rachel and I root for Rachel. I want her to succeed and look fabulous. She even just went through an awards season (for Spotlight) and I really can’t even remember one of her dresses. That’s the problem: I know she cares about fashion, but for the most part, what she wears is so unmemorable. Well, this Elie Saab is memorable… in a bad way. I’m an Elie Saab defender – I think they make pretty, frothy gowns perfect for film festivals and such. They appeal to me because I feel like the label isn’t aiming to be “challenging” or to be “avant-garde.” Avant-garde is overrated. But so is this dress! God, this is so bad. Now I feel sorry for Rachel.
More photos from the premiere… Tilda Swinton is so otherworldly. She’s probably going to look like this for the next forty human years. While I hate that she’s playing The Ancient One in this film, I don’t hate Tilda’s fashion work on the red carpet. She wore Schiaparelli Fall 2016 Couture in navy. She looks badass.
And here’s Mads Mikkelsen, in case you needed a Danish fix. Chiwetel Ejiofor is in the wind as far as film promotion goes – I guess he’s probably working somewhere and he can’t get away. It would have been nice to see him too!

That dress would have been nice without the sleeve and with a lining. Unfortunate birds (are those birds?) on the crotch.

I am so over the see-through dress. It’s not sexy and it distracts from the design. I really want that fad to end.
I think the breast area is particularly unfortunate- kind of a mermaid-ish look with those birds right over her boobs.

Tilda looks awful! That jacket is too big and the shoulder thingies are just wrong. I think Rachel would look good in a paper bag. She’s luscious.
Cate Blanchett would have made the Eli Saab work. There is nothing wrong with the dress per se, it just needs someone with more gravitas.

Tilda Sinton can miss me for now. I am disappointed in her.
I’m pretty disappointed in Tilda as well, but sadly I still love her very much, and that’s a fantastic suit. Rachel does deserve way, way better than that.

Nice dress fits into a otherworldly narrative with the pattern colors,so she might have worn it more for the moment, event, mood of the movie then what looks good or could have looked better. One of the things you have to like with her is she is beautiful but just goes with the flow looks wise. On True Dectective she looked like she barely combed or brushed her hair. Thumbs up.
This would have looked stunning with a lining, or with a light-coloured opaque fabric in place of the black sheer.
The bird design and the fabric are both so beautiful. Would have been an amazing dress if it wasn’t sheer and didn’t have those weird belt bits on it.
I thought the “put a bird on it” look was over 2 years ago. Obviously not.
