Lil’ Wayne on Black Lives Matter: ‘It ain’t got nothin’ to do with me’

wenn20780936

I hesitate to call Lil’ Wayne stupid. I don’t think he’s stupid. I just think he’s got an absurd case of tunnel vision when it comes to social issues, and he possibly has one of the worst cases of celebrity-privilege I’ve ever seen. So, not stupid, just very, very insular. Previously, Lil’ Wayne has talked about how he doesn’t believe racism exists… because a white cop saved his life once when he was shot. Instead of understanding that is an anecdotal story about how racism isn’t prevalent across the board with police officers, Lil’ Wayne believes that the world only exists no further than his own experiences. Lil’ Wayne sat down with Nightline (WHY, Nightline??) this week to talk about his thoughts on Black Lives Matter (he doesn’t know her) and American racism (he’s a success, so what does he care?). Some assorted quotes:

On Black Lives Matter: “What is it? What — what do you mean?” he questioned ABC News’ Lindsey Davis. After Davis offered clarification, the hip-hop star explained why he isn’t personally invested in the push behind Black Lives Matter. “That just sounds weird, I don’t know that you put a name on — it’s not a name; it’s not ‘whatever, whatever.’ It’s somebody got shot by a policeman for a f–ked up reason.”

He believes his own story proves America is cool with black men: “I am a young, black, rich motherf—ker. If that don’t let you know that America understand black motherf–king lives matter these days, I don’t know what it is.” He then pointed to an offscreen camera man and continued to state his case. “That man white. He filmin’ me. I’m a n—ger. I don’t know what you mean. Don’t come at me with that dumb s–t, ma’am… My life matter — especially to my bitches.”

Whether he feels connected to BLM: “I don’t feel connected to a damn thing that ain’t got nothin’ to do with me. If you do, you crazy as s–t. You,” he said, pointing at Davis. “Not the camera, you. Feeling connected to something that ain’t got nothin’ to do with you? If it ain’t got nothin’ to do with me, I ain’t connected to it.”

[From Us Weekly]

I just… I mean… what is there to say? Of course if he doesn’t want to associate himself with BLM, that’s his right. But it’s not just that – he’s negating the data, he’s negating the lived experiences of millions of people of color just because he can’t see past his own nose. He’s saying that their experiences with racism don’t exist because he’s a success, because he hasn’t had to deal with it personally.

That just made me cringe, while he obviously took some sort of drug before the interview I think he believes what he’s saying.
Ugh. No wonder he doesn’t give many interviews.

  2. Lala says:

    Very elaborate!

  3. Nev says:

When I as a black man have been reduced to tears watching these horrific stories in the news…to have him say this is sad. And regarding him I think I’ve heard and seen enough.

    Sad.

    • DeniseMich says:

He will care if black people stop buying and promoting his music.

This morning 105.1 gave him donkey of the day. But they should stop mentioning him for about 1 year. He will care about blm and a whole bunch of other things then.

  4. Darkladi says:

So 😩. Somebody please stop putting a mic in front of this clown’s face hole

  5. HH says:

I hate when something is so dumb that I can’t even respond intelligently. This is moronic. “It’s not my life, so what does it matter.” That’s right, Wayne. Just be a minstrel. Entertain the masses and assume that means they truly care about you.

    • Melly says:

I hope his fans take note of this. I feel connected to BLM and i’m a white woman, but I guess according to Lil Wayne I’m dumb. The idea that if it doesn’t effect you then it’s not your problem has led to some TERRIBLE stuff in the world. But I guess Wayne doesn’t care about that.

  6. QQ says:

Whosoever was looking at this guy as a beacon of anything other than lean seizures, poor profilactic usage and God’s sense of humor when building people was a lost sheep already.. I mean Really

    • Kitten says:

I just guffawed at lean seizures LOLOL
You are the best, always QQ.

      • QQ says:

me and my gfs were discussing this morning : How do women MULTIPLE women at that have let him hit it raw.. I mean Father. God!

    • LiterallyaShambles says:

      😂

    • Nev says:

I busted out loud laughing on the bus at your lean seizures comment. WORD.

    • Lorelai says:

      “God’s sense of humor”
      😂

    • Yup, Me says:

LMFAO, QQ. Thank you for that. My friends and I were discussing this foolishness and while none of us look to Lil Wayne for anything, it’s still annoying that he’s talking in the media on something he clearly knows nothing about.

Really- if racism doesn’t exist or impact him, I wonder if he sees any deeper layers to his self harm history and issues with his label because PTSD from the Black lived experience and fallout from racism both seem to have fingers all in there, from the outside looking in.

  7. Babs says:

    He stupid.

  8. Sixer says:

Not the sharpest tool in the box, is he?

  9. trollontheloose says:

anyone watched Ava DuVernay 13th on Netflix. If you haven’t, please do. And this fried grilled sizzurped mushed brain ought to.

    • Melly says:

The 13th was really good. Incredibly eye opening. I can’t say enough good things about it.

    • Swak says:

Haven’t gotten through it all. Need to start over when I can concentrate on watching it so that I don’t miss anythong.

  10. Radley says:

I take it that’s the sizzurp talking. This is his “I wanna see the receipts” moment. Drug addled incoherent foolery that gives everyone in listening distance a near fatal case of secondhand embarrassment.

Your black life matters, Lil Wayne. So get thee to a rehab.

    • Jayna says:

This. His brain is fried from all the sizzurp and drugs he does all the time. Anything he says is while incredibly high, I imagine.

  11. Radley says:

Also he’s been in showbiz since he was a kid. No wonder his head is up his own ass. And woe to any woman that lays with him after being referred to as “my bitches”. What a douchebag.

The only reason he’s free to be a public mess and make money doing it is because people fought for his right to live the American dream of being a total trainwreck, but rich as f*ck in spite of it. He has a lot in common with Trump, actually.

  12. Kitten says:

As a white chick, I don’t really feel that it’s my place to lecture him on his feelings regarding BLM.
He just strikes me as incredibly selfish.

    • detritus says:

Can we side eye the shit out of him from the corner though?
I think he deserves at least that.

  13. AVO says:

lil Wayne is a whole idiot and truly is an ignorant concerning Black Lives Matter however i can’t help feel sorry for him with the abuse he suffered at birdman hands. This clip gives a glimpse of what was going down

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JQpltb4W8sE

    • DahliaDee says:

AVO, I don’t mean to be a stuck-up white woman, but I can’t understand a word he’s saying. Scratch that, I understand the words individually, but they add up to something incoherent to me. Much like the overuse of “like”, context gets lost somewhere amongst all those “you know what I’m saying” ‘s.

  14. Greenieweenie says:

Ppl want to write him off and fine. But I think there’s social commentary to be had: he’s the classic example of someone co-opted by the system because it permitted him some success. I got the same vibe from Pharrell before. A lot of black celebrities actually–they succeed, so they see new value in the system. I even got the vibe from Obama with his comments on Kaepernick. “We aren’t as divided as we seem.” Maybe not, but I KNOW that message is being reinforced when you’re surrounded by people whose job it is to affirm you and whatever you’re doing. These people at the top lose touch with how the system oppresses at the bottom even when they know the reality of it (Obama knows. Lil Wayne obviously can’t see past the tip of his own nose).

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

That, and these people know on which side their bread is buttered and they don’t want to anger the person signing their cheques. The RZA also wanders lost, so many do.

    • Elise says:

Seeing a couple of bubbles in the water doesn’t mean the pot’s boiling. We’ve come a long way. We have a longer way to go yet.

  15. lucy2 says:

That is not a well man.

  16. PaulY says:

Wow…I don’t even know what to say other than I hope this calloused tool’s album sales plummet as a result of his lack of sensitivity, basic humanity, and obvious misogyny. Sad. 🙁

  17. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

This is what happens when you let corporations raise your children, I feel like Al Roker Lochte-stirring something.

  18. Bubbles says:

I understand what he’s saying about how a white cop saved him so he personally has not experienced racial issues with authority. However, all of his comments sound so incoherent. He can’t form a single, complete thought. I think it’s b/c his brain is absolutely fried from drug use. If he would sober up enough to make a full, intelligent statement his opinions would be much more credible even if they weren’t popular opinion. He seems completely numb and dumb from being in a constant state of extreme intoxication.

    • Elise says:

I wonder what would happen if he tried driving alone around some large cities. Particularly if he’s as fried as he appears in this video.

  19. serena says:

No wait, I think he IS stupid.

  20. MellyMel says:

Moral of the story: Don’t do drugs kids!

  21. jferber says:

I can’t hate on Lil’ Wayne since he’s my hip-hop crush forever. I absolutely don’t think he’s stupid. Unlike the orange sludge in our political system, Wayne IS capable of becoming informed on issues. In fact, I’d definitely prefer Wayne to the orange sludge ANY DAY. Wayne is promiscuous, I grant you, but he has NEVER and will never be a sexual predator, like Trump. Case closed. (Sorry, I just have Trump on the brain. Will this ever be over?!?!)

  22. jerkface says:

Come on, he’s been sippin’ on the syzurp for YEARS. He has issues and Im not going to judge him because brain damage via drug abuse is a real beyatch. I’ll give him compassion and a hope that his frontal lobe “comes online” eventually. BLM has everything to do with every human. Have mercy on his soul (his brain)

  23. jerkface says:

And also yeah buddy, white cops who know you are famous and know that they may get in trouble tend to behave a little better towards your famous azz than they would a regular dude on the street who looked an talked like you do WAYNE. White cops in my area haven’t really been known to be that kinds to poor white people either. Or poor brown people. Or poor yellow people. or poor dead people. Or poor smurfs….. I don’t live in a great area I guess.

  24. Julie says:

Ugh what a piece of shit.

  25. Bxhal says:

Lol Remember when OJ pulled such a stupid move of distancing himself from the civil rights cause back in the day, even as Muhammad Ali and other great athletes gave up a lot for it? Look at that view from back then. OJ was on top of the world. Ali and crew were mocked. Now look at it from today’s lens. OJ hated and in jail and seen as a traitor whilst Ali glorified, as it should be. Time will more often than not reveal these assholes for what they are and serve them what they deserve so when it comes to Wayne, im not even worried. He will get his comeuppance soon enough. I especially can never forgive him for the Emmet Till lyrics. He really is a lowlife and I cant believe i was once a fan. I thank God for time and for the gift of mental growth and for the precious gift of distance that kept me away from bad company that was corrupting my good morals by making me a Wayne fan.

  26. Hikari says:

What can we expect from someone that does not have any education or moral compass?? I look at this guy and only see an uneducated-untalented and ignorant lad.
I have never listened to any of his songs but I can imagine is all about women, drugs and money.

  27. Mike D says:

I never understood Lil Wayne, I never saw the attraction. Long before he appeared for the interview; I never understood a thing he said. He should really thank the “Third Ward” and New Orleans for the support they gave him. He’s the poster boy for when “drugs went bad.” How can BLM not be relevant to him when the very people that support and buy his music are directly affected by the events of BLM. I guess the real question is how can those people that are directly affected with BLM support Lil Wayne; he does not care about them!
