Miley Cyrus asks Donald Trump to show compassion as president

This tweet is what Miley Cyrus posted Tuesday morning. Miley was quite vocal throughout he election. At first, she gave her full support to Bernie Sanders and when he finally conceded the nomination to Hillary Clinton, Miley threw her support behind Hillary. She even went door-to-door at George Mason University to encourage the students to get out the vote. Like many, Miley was quite vocal about being against Donald Trump as much as she was for Hillary. Obviously, the election did not go the way Miley had hoped it would. Wednesday morning, Miley posted a very emotional video in which she thanked Hillary and President Obama for their dedication and inspiration. In addition, Miley said that even though it hurt, she would accept Trump as POTUS and then appealed to him to show compassion. Here is her video:

I truly appreciate Miley’s video. I am not an emotionally expressive person so I admire when people can show raw emotion like this. But I also appreciate what she said. I agree that Hillary did deserve to be the first female president not only for her qualifications but also how long and hard she worked for it. I also really admire Miley saying she would accept Trump and his presidency because this is what I am trying to do too. I am not asking you to, everyone needs to process this election in his or her own way and time, but this is the choice I have made (my husband has not, btw). I am not prepared to say I will show Trump respect, as he will need to earn that back after losing it from me so spectacularly. But I accept him as president and I do respect the office, if not the man.

Off topic but still election: there is much discussion on how to talk to your kids about the election and Trump. My children are 11 and nine. We’ve discussed the election at length and they know who their parents supported. On Wednesday, I tried to announce the results and what happens next as unbiased as I could. The whole time, my daughter is just kind of smiling, which was surprised me because she was very vocal against Trump. When I stopped speaking, she said, “Yeah, but California voted for Hillary Clinton so she rules us and Trump just rules everyone else.” Ah, if only, baby girl. If only.

Speaking of California, Miley had at least one thing go her way this election with pot being legalized in our state. Maybe that’s how she plans to accept Trump as president. As accepting as she said she will be, I am not sure she is 100% there yet as she also posted this Wednesday:

I watched that video and my heart was completely there with her. I love her for this.

I was so angry when I woke up. So pissed. So afraid and anxious. I had to turn off my phone and go do yoga and meditate for almost two hours. I haven’t been by myself on a yoga mat all week and it’s what I needed.

At this point, I can’t be angry anymore. Now I’m right with Miley. He does need to show compassion and I hope to God he does.
He MUST come out and denounce these people who are committing hate crimes in his name. If we’re going to move forward, he absolutely has to. I pray he finds it in his heart to do so, but I’m sadly not optimistic.

“He MUST come out and denounce these people who are committing hate crimes in his name”

That has to work both ways. A co-worker from one of my other job sites just texted that he just got punched in the face and hit with a bottle because he was told he must be a Trump supporter. He was at a gas station that he always frequent when this Black woman rolled up on him and said that to him. He is White by the way.

He is also A Trump supporter, so she was right but it doesn’t make what she did right. Though I did laugh when he said fuck this shit, I voted for Trump but Hillary should have won. Look at my face.

Resentment, criticism, and disgust for anyone who voted for Trump is called for and justified, but not violence. We don’t ever want to normalize violence against people for who they vote for. Besides, it’ll only strengthen the delusion and persecution complex that the racist/MRA/homophobe/anti-pc crowd already has. People can’t even handle Trump supporters being called stupid and being called out for making a political decision that’s harmful to others without crying “Stop Bullying!” “#NotAllTrumpSupporters!” “That’s not nice!” “We Trumpsters are the real victims!” or “Leave my problematic hubby and friends alone, you mean, mean women, people of color, gay and bisexual people, transgender people, and others who are stuck with this!”

  2. Ana says:

Well said Miley! That was hard to say and I admire you for being that big person.

  3. V4Real says:

She’s asking him to show compassion, I’m asking him to step the f-ck down. I’m still so angry that he won and no, I will never accept him as my President.

Just like The Dixie Chicks said they were embarrassed that Bush was from Texas, I’m embarrassed that Trump is from NY.

    • Alleycat says:

I hope he doesn’t step down. Mike Pence is worse to me than Trump. He’s actually a politician and knows how to get shit done. And he’s crazy.

  4. Itchyandweird says:

Asking Trump to show compassion is like asking Colonel Sanders to show vegetarianism.

    • Rene Besette says:

Thanks for the laugh. I am feeling for my friends in the states. Damn that was harsh, idk I hope they all know what they are doing and what they put in.

I admire her for this, despite not being a fan in general. President Obama made an excellent point when he pointed out that he hopes for Trump’s success because that will be essential to keeping America successful. It takes a bigger person to say, “I find almost everything you say awful, but I must accept you as leader and do what I can to keep this country going.”

I went to my church last night for a service. Now, my congregation is almost fully comprised of anti-Trump people (majority Clinton, with a sizable Johnson contingent). The services normally conclude with prayers for people in need, requests, etc. And the man leading it got up and said (as normal) “Please continue to bless President Obama so he can continue the work he must finish before he leaves” and then says “And please bless President-elect Trump, that his heart will be opened as he has to meet more Americans and listen to them and that he will become a leader for all Americans and lead us into the future.” And that amazed me. Almost none of us voted for him, but we can be big enough to still get that America’s fate is partially now linked to his and still invest some small hope that he can really do better. Time will tell.

  6. Marty says:

This is rich coming from her.

And no, I will never accept Trump as my president. Not now, not ever. I don’t have the luxury of hoping that man suddenly grows a conscience one day.

  7. Miss M says:

Well said, Miley! My heart aches for all of you, Americans.

Having faith in Trump unifying the country is playing right into his hands. He wants nothing more than to bamboozle us, leaving us vulnerable, only to leave our mouths gaping in shock when he suddenly does something so decimating and we say “we never saw that coming.” Remain skeptical, question his every move, be prepared to react on a dime.

I haven’t commented since Tuesday morning but I’ve been coming here for comfort and it has been a huge help.

I know I posted previously about how I am the only one in my family who didn’t vote for Trump. My sister and I (she’s 25 and voted for him, YIKES) had an argument before the election and we haven’t really talked since. She was unbelievably cruel to me, yet I just got a text from her asking if we could “talk it out.” I’ve been seeing a lot of people who were borderline rabid leading up to Tuesday, who have seemingly done a full switch to kumbaya, let’s all be friends, don’t be so sad, etc. now that he won. I’m not having it.

I have to admit, I am dreading Thanksgiving. I don’t know how to act toward these people that I love in light of this… I don’t feel like we are living on the same planet. My cousin posted on Wednesday that she’s “excited to finally get to live The American Dream.” I just… don’t know what to do with that.

    • virginfangirl says:

I feel so bad for you. At least I have my parents, co-workers, husband, daughter, many in laws who voted Hillary. I hope your family can all agree to simply NOT discuss politics around you. That’s going to be my suggestion when I’m around Trump supporters. If not, I think I’ll have to leave, it’s just too painful.

Ive been donating money to the aclu in my racist asshole relatives names for xmas. I work as a floral designer and had to do a funeral today for a young hispanic man who commited suicide because he thought he was going to be deported. Illegal or not, that person life matters. Trump has blood on his hands as far as Im concerned. He will never be my president. Go see Shaun Kings fb-hes been documenting all the hate crimes that have been committed since tues night. Last i checked a 10 year old girl got grabbed by her privates by a fellow classmate. The kid said, Well Trump did it.

  10. India Andrews says:

I wish Miley would leave the USA like she promised.

    • Alleycat says:

Why? What has she done? She’s extremely charitable. Yes, she can be annoying but so can 90% of celebrities.

    • Ana says:

      @India
Why would she leave? She has as much right as everyone here to stay. This is her country and she fought for what she believe is her right. She had those convictions and was not afraid to be vocal about them. Just because she behaves a certain way that is not acceptable to us that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a big heart and compassion. At the end, in all this, she is a bigger person than you are!

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Because Trump supporters can’t take criticism.

      • bravocueen says:

No,it’s not because Trump supporters can’t take criticism. It’s because in 2008 and 2012 conservatives were very upset about the direction their country was about to take. Some moaned and groaned, but nobody burned shit down and nobody punched people in the face or physically attacked people. There are millions of Trump supporters LIKE ME who are in the military, have spouses in the military, and my son is a police officer and I am DISGUSTED at the way we, as a whole, have been treated. If someone called Obama and all black people “thugs” based on the black crime in Chicago we would have riots. Conservatives have WON. Suck it up buttercup. In 4 years, we’ll see if it’s a better place. If it’s not, I’m happy to vote for someone I think will do better. This backlash, protesting, name calling, violence and ‘NOT MY PRESIDENT” is laughable and ridiculous!!! P.S. I’m super glad I stayed far away from these comments during the election. I sadly, thought it was safe to come back to the site again.

Some really valuable points on why we can’t normalize this autocrat’s rise to power. He deserves to be taken at his word. http://www.nybooks.com/daily/2016/11/10/trump-election-autocracy-rules-for-survival/

    • Erica_V says:

Thank you for this. I have been told numerous times I am “overreacting” when voicing fears of this being the start of a downward spiral our country may never recover from.

      • Petrichor says:

I am Canadian, but I agree the US’s days of being a superpower are numbered. And the fear of your Western allies is–who will fill the vacuum that you leave?

  12. ggggggg says:

No. I like Miley (when she isn’t coming for black women). I love her open heart, and most of this video is totally on point and moving … it’s refreshing to hear a young voice recognize the heartbreak associated with the whole trajectory of Hillary’s career. However, though this kind of forgiveness is good for one’s personal health, it is terrible for the health of this nation. Mrs. Clinton and President Obama are duty-bound to smooth the waters; they honor us with their grace in these difficult days. But it is on us to shout out loud: TRUMP IS NOT MY PRESIDENT … and (probable secret KKK Grand Wizard) PENCE IS NOT MY VICE PRESIDENT … and bless her heart, but MELANIA IS NOT MY FIRST LADY. Donald’s first taste of media notoriety came in the form of a Housing Discrimination suit. This man has shown us who the fuxk he is ! Over and over and over again !
I’ve been thinking today about him saying he would date Ivanka if she wasn’t his daughter … it may be the most stunning proof we have, that in his eyes, the greatest honor that can be bestowed upon any woman, his own prodigal child included, is that he might want to put his d*** inside her. DON’T GET IT TWISTED YALL—-we will be laying down in the streets to protect our bodies.

This coming from the same person who openly mocked rape victims? hypocrite, she should take her own advice.
