Brie Larson on Casey Affleck: ‘Whatever I did onstage kind of spoke for itself’

Many of us pointed out, throughout the awards season, that Brie Larson was totally over Casey Affleck. Brie was the reigning Best Actress winner across the board, at all of the major awards shows, so she was repeatedly tasked with presenting this year’s Best Actor awards. When she presented the SAG Award to Denzel Washington – who won in what was a major upset – she actually giggled to herself, seemingly out of joy that she she didn’t have to pretend to congratulate Casey. This was how Brie acted after she called Casey’s name at the Golden Globes:

And then when Casey won the Oscar, her face seemed to fall as she read his name, then she refused to clap for him:

So, it was a thing and people talked about it. Whether or not Casey Affleck was a serial sexual harasser, it seemed like Brie had absolutely made up her mind about him and she made the choice to do her job – present the awards – and nothing more. No fake-friendliness, no fawning, no clapping. People noticed. And Brie was asked about it by Vanity Fair and she didn’t try to play it off like it was all in our heads.

Brie Larson presented Casey Affleck with the best-actor Oscar at the Academy Awards last week, her muted reaction did not go unnoticed, especially on social media. After handing Affleck the award, Larson stepped back and stood with both her arms at her side while the audience gave the actor a standing ovation. Many viewers speculated that Larson—a vocal advocate for sexual-assault survivors—did not clap given Affleck’s history: he was sued by two women for sexual harassment allegedly committed during the filming of I’m Still Here. (Both suits were settled in 2010.) Larson confirmed to Vanity Fair on Wednesday that her reaction was intentional.

“I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself,” she told us at the Hollywood premiere of her latest movie, Kong: Skull Island, at the Dolby Theatre. “I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I’ll admit that I didn’t totally know what to make of Brie last year, during her Oscar campaign for Room. She struck me as a nice, somewhat boring, milquetoast actress who didn’t have a lot to say beyond “I’m so happy to be here.” But Brie has grown on me SO MUCH. She’s very politically active, she’s funny and interesting on Twitter, she’s sassy and I love that she’s not afraid of alienating Casey Affleck and his dude-bros in Hollywood. Her attitude seems to be “f–k y’all, I’m not clapping and that speaks for itself.”

PS… this is actually my favorite Brie moment and I’m still bummed that I didn’t write about it as it happened. Remember the first days of Trump’s first Muslim Ban? Everything was chaos and people were on social media, trying to stay focused on activism around airports. Well, Rob Lowe made a stupid tweet and Brie delivered the perfect f–king shade.

Yeah she’s got an Oscar and a Marvel movie and few f**ks left to give! We see Brie, we get it, well done. 😏

  2. slowsnow says:

It is really admirable to see someone taking a stand – albeit discreetly – that could, eventually, cost her some work.

    • INeedANap says:

The sad thing is that it could cost her work at all. If Sean Penn can go gallivanting around with despots and murderers and call it political activism, then she should be able to *not clap*. But such is the life of a woman.

QQ I’m dying at this comment.
But yes Brie is woke af. Intersectional feminist. Political. Great actress. Nice person. Just overall someone to root for. I was a fan during her teen queen days and I’m an even bigger fan ever since I saw Room.

      Slay my life Brie

    • elimaeby says:

QQ, I want to be you when I grow up. You crack me up every time you comment and I’m a comic by profession!

  4. OhDear says:

Good for her! I completely get why she’s being discreet about it (also, it shows that what Constance Wu said about it took massive lady balls).

  5. minx says:

    Good for her.
And that red dress is beautiful on her.

    • lizzie says:

Yes – that dress is incredible on her. I wish she had done that for oscar night. But I love what she did instead – which is become reigning queen of shade and amazing genuine model of intersectional feminism. I recommend following her instagram.

  6. Aims says:

I really like Brie. I seriously thought Room was amazing. Her connection with the little boy was so believable . She deserves all the good things coming her way.

  7. Mildred Pierce says:

    Won’t she be blacklisted?

  9. Sam says:

I love her and will watch anything she’s in. Not only is she a great actress but by all accounts she’s actually a good person too. So happy she’s gonna become even bigger once Captain Marvel comes out.

    • Paula says:

I’m kind of over comic book movies, but I’m going to support Captain Marvel just because of her.

  10. SusanneToo says:

I saw this on DM last night and almost all the comments were anti-Brie. It was astonishing, things like, “She must have dementia; Phony;Innocent until proven guilty; Why didn’t she not show up; Bet she can’t remember her lines either.” Who are these people? trump voters, I imagine.

    • Bridget says:

They don’t like anything over there. If you don’t have anything nice to say, go to the Daily Mail and spew your bike there.

  11. MC2 says:

    Love her!

  12. Whyme says:

Claps hands! Anyone else notice when he accepted the oscar from her she said something to him in his ear and he did not look happy? I want to know what she said!!!!

Superficial side note: Since she started doing the red carpets for Kong she has looked amazing! She didn’t look this good during award season last year! Stunning!

  13. my3cents says:

    STANDING CLAPPING!
Takes courage, unfortunately there are so little who put their money where their mouth is, though I don’t judge, it is hard.

  14. Jaded says:

Queen, I loved her in Room and I love her even more now

  15. Saks says:

I hardly knew who she was last year but I became a fan over the awards season and the trump presidency, as Kaiser said, she is funny witty and intelligent. I think I have a girl crush on her now haha.

  16. Ari says:

So glad she said this because there were some folks who thought it was all in some of our heads. I am super stoked for Captain Marvel and I am not sure why people have been sleeping on her ass prior to her winning her oscar she was such a BADASS on united states of tara

  17. Kristen says:

Seriously that RL/Twitter thing is amazing.

  18. Koolkitty says:

All the cookies for Brie. Women are always supposed to appear “likeable”, even when we’re uncomfortable, pissed, afraid for their safety, whatever. I love that she was like nope, eff that, eff being liked. Side note: I’m a daily lurker and rarely comment myself, but I ALWAYS check to see what QQ has to say every day. Thank you QQ!!

  19. ichsi says:

She’s awesome! love love love her! Talented and smart woman.

  20. ValiantlyVarnished says:

Hi all! Been reading (and lurking) in the comments for ages and finally decided to comment after reading QQ’s comment which gavene life. I was always pretty indifferent to Brie and thought that maybe she was in the JLaw category of bland blonde actress. But she has earned my respect acter these last few months. I applaud any woman in Hollywood who has the courage to not care about pissing off the bros.
