‘This is Us’ wraps season one showing ‘darker, uglier side’ of Jack & Rebecca

Warning: this post contains spoilers about this week’s episode of This is Us

Where the inaugural season of NBCs drama series This is Us came in with a bang – thanks, in part, to Milo Ventimiglia’s butt (hey, it intrigued me enough to tune in and now I’m hooked) it left with a slight whimper in Tuesday night’s season-ending episode, “Moonshadow.”

Let me clarify, a middling episode of This is Us is still probably better than about 70% of what’s on TV, but the critical consensus indicates that the season one finale was not one of the series’ best. The episode focuses on the relationship of Jack and Rebecca. We learn how they met – in a bar that Jack was trying to rob (!) where Rebecca was singing during open mic night – and in the 90s we see them separate after Rebecca’s tour falls through.

In between, young Jack participates in a high-stakes, back room poker game to raise money for his dream car repair business (and also to get out from under the roof he shares with his alcoholic father), wins a huge hand and immediately cashes out, leading to a beating and robbery by his fellow players. Young Rebecca is told by her (awful) friends that she shouldn’t pin her hopes on her singing career and later gets her demo rejected by a record label. And both are set up on blind dates – Rebecca with a handsome but bland mergers and acquisitions guy and Jack with a mystery woman he stands up in his attempt to get his poker winnings back. But, if their respective dates went off without a hitch, they would have never met. Ah, fate.

Some good news about the episode – as many fans theorized, Jack didn’t die on the way to see Rebecca’s gig. Yes, he drove drunk, but he made it in one piece, and, after drunkenly assaulting Ben, who admitted he tried to steal a kiss from his wife before their gig, was driven home by a very angry Rebecca. (Side note: also in the good news department, we get to see young, clean-shaven Jack in the episode. Way better than the porn ’stache. Just saying.)

Once Jack and Rebecca arrive home, they get into a long overdue fight for the ages – one that we all knew was brewing. Rebecca accused Jack of conveniently hitting the bottle again just in time to squash her lifelong dream and Jack volleyed by criticizing Rebecca for giving up her family for what he feels is a hobby, not a career. Rebecca asked Jack what he loved about her and he couldn’t respond, she dealt this blow, telling her husband, “The next time you tell me that you love me, make sure you’re not just doing it out of habit.” Ouch. The next morning, Jack packs his things and heads over to Miguel’s so that the couple can have a little “time-out.” Before he leaves, Jack says the things he should have said the previous night, telling Rebecca, “You weren’t just my great love story, you were my big break.” Despite those words, he still leaves – and leaves us uncertain as to what happens next, well, before Jack inevitably dies, of course.

Mandy Moore, who plays Rebecca, talked to Entertainment Weekly about the finale, admitting, “I love these sort of darker tones that are coming in for [Jack], and for all of these characters.” Of the relationship between Rebecca and Jack, Mandy opined:

Things are pretty precarious. I really think this is a turning point in the story of this family, and this is a fundamental rift in the foundation of their relationship, and it really shows that darker, uglier side. I don’t know where it goes from here. I have an idea — I don’t know if things have changed — but I think it’s going to take a lot of work on both of their parts to figure out what the next steps are.

Milo Ventimiglia (whose last name most of his co-stars can’t spell) agreed, telling EW,

I feel that this last episode has showed a different side of the show, but it was a side that was necessary to show. With the light, you got to have the dark. With the good, you got to have the bad. With the happiness of Jack and Rebecca, you’re absolutely going to see the breakdown — the complete and total breakdown — of the relationship.

Mandy also took to social media on Wednesday to send a message to fans who may have been disappointed about the way the season ended. She tweeted, “Sometimes we don’t get all the answers we want. Patience. That’s the kind of show we’re making and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Hey, the show has at least two more seasons on the air – and there’s still lots of stories to be told. The finale spent its last few minutes on the “Big Three” – Kate wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and sing, Kevin auditions for Ron Howard (and it seems things with Sophie are at a “cautiously optimistic” level) and Randall wants to adopt a baby. And yes, we still need to discover how Jack meets his maker. It’s been a roller coaster ride this season, but I, for one, am getting in line for season two. As the This is Us Twitter account put it, “Thanks for an amazing first season!”

I thought the finale was great. Was it the best episode of the season? No, but it was still a strong one and still left us in a good place with major shifts to explore in the coming seasons. I’m glad Jack’s death wasn’t revealed, that would have been too expected. I think (I hope) it will happen when we least expect it. I keep going back to not only Kate telling Toby it was her fault (I’m sure it actually wasn’t, she just feels responsible for some reason), but Kevin saying he was angry with his father for “letting himself die.” It’s a mystery, and I’m glad it’s going to stay that way a little longer. Anyway, great episode, great show, and I can’t wait for season 2!

I have been completely hooked on this show since day 1. Some episodes (ex: Memphis road trip) have left me crying. However, I felt letdown at the finale. Yes, the fight at the end was raw and feeling “real”, but….I don’t know….it just fell kind of flat for me. That said, the cast is superb, and I cannot wait for next season.

Mandy dress is bad for the finale party! Ouch!

    • margie says:

      +1

    • AreYouForReal? says:

      Yes, quite unfortunate, that dress.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

Yes, it is bad, but I give her lots of slack. She is unusually tall for a woman in Hollywood and not a sample size. (5’10” and a size 8 I believe–she also wear a size 10 shoe), so her options are probably quite limited. The black and red dress screams to me, “This dress was made for a shorter woman so let’s quickly add something to the top so your boobs are covered.” She has always seemed like such a wonderfully kind and genuine girl so I just adore her.

      • Gailly says:

i actually saw her this weekend at a concert. she walked by in close range twice and I couldn’t believe how thin she was! definitely tall, but much smaller than I thought.

It was very clever the way they set up the “blind date” that never happened between Jack and Rebecca. I could watch Milo V. all day….he’s a great actor. Mandy Moore, though….she’s beautiful and a good onscreen match with Milo but I’m always aware that she’s trying to emote.

    • Lily says:

It’s clever, but the whole bait and switch thing is getting kind of old. We get it, they want to keep us in suspense. But you can’t do it so often, or it becomes predictable.

I knew we wouldn’t see Jack die in a car crash because of the blatant, lingering shots of the beer on the passenger seat, and I knew the dates weren’t with each other because they made it so obvious that they were going for that.

I’m actually done with the show, as it’s kind of exhausting and nothing really seems to be happening.

  5. Jess says:

I was thinking we would see how Jack dies and I was ready to break down in tears at any moment just waiting for it, but thankfully it didn’t happen, so sure I was a tad disappointed for a minute, but I prefer the mystery of not knowing and trying to figure it out. I love this show so much and can’t wait for next season.

  6. Lucky says:

I was disappointed in the finale, although the acting of Milo & Mandy was great, especially the brutal fight. And clean shaven Jack is everything!

  7. Dunne says:

I have to say- I actually rolled my eyes when Kate said she wanted to be a singer. I’m finding that her character is quickly becoming the least compelling and most predictable- which is unfortunate. I liked her at first…

    • GingerCrunch says:

Same! I absolutely LOVE when every other cast member is on screen, except her!

      • Dunne says:

Right!? At first I thought Kevin might be the least interesting but his character is getting fleshed out so well and Justin Hartley is giving him great depth. And my god, I love Sterling K Brown. Chrissy Metz is really one note…

      • GingerCrunch says:

I also enjoy the show much more when everyone’s on an episode. Felt that way at first with the Memphis episode, but quickly got on board and wept at the ending! 🙄

    • Amanda D says:

Totally agree, I actually don’t care for her much. She’s dull and whines and marries his best friend!!! 😡

  8. Louise177 says:

It wasn’t a bad episode but it was a letdown. It was hyped so much. The cast and showrunners were saying how emotional it was going to be and it wasn’t. If it was an episode during the season it would be considered great but people expect something more from a finale.

  9. Amanda D says:

I think the 2nd to last episode should have been the finale with Randell being trumphiant at the end. The only interesting part of the real finale was their fight. Everything else was so cliche. Like an ex from when she was 19 hitting on her? Please.
