Mama June Shannon’s makeover took her from a ‘size 18 to size 4’

24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

True story: we haven’t written about Mama June Shannon since 2014. That was the year when TLC’s popular reality show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, imploded with a series of revelations about child abuse and more. Mama June Shannon is the matriarch of a Georgia working-class clan, and Honey Boo Boo is her youngest daughter. For several years, Mama June and Honey Boo Boo enjoyed their reality-show fame, but it all came crashing down when it was revealed that June had an on-again-off-again relationship with a predator who had abused at least one of her older daughters. TLC put the show on hold and advertisers fled the network, which would end up being a precursor for what went down with the Duggars.

Well, Mama June is back and now she’s the star of the reality show. She’s the star of WE’s Mama June: From Not to Hot. It’s a makeover reality show, but it still follows June’s family in general. The idea behind it is that June was very overweight and unhealthy – she had a crappy diet and she always felt like death – and so a team of dieticians, fitness gurus and surgeons were called in to transform June. And they did transform her. A few days ago, the new Mama June was revealed:

According to Mama June, she went from a size 18 to a size 4, which… yeah, maybe in Kardashian/Kirstie Alley Sizing. Don’t get me wrong, I applaud June for making the effort and I hope she’s a lot healthier now. But I do wonder if calling herself a “size 4” now is defeating the purpose of this exercise. Speaking of exercise, how much of this transformation really came from changing her fitness and diet versus liposuction and surgery? I don’t know. According to People Magazine, June went under the knife to “remove skin from her neck, arms, back and stomach. Shannon also underwent breast augmentation surgery and got a new set of veneers.” I mean… okay. I can’t believe they gave her another show, honestly.

if you kick a predator out of your house, i suppose you lose 250 lbs immediately

i dont care what she weights, i would never watch her

    • Dragonlady sakura says:

You’re exactly right she’s a disgusting enabler! The fact that she got back together with her daughters molester is to horrifying for words. I don’t care how much weight you lose, Mama June, you will always be a terrible mother.

    • Lucy2 says:

Agreed, it’s terrible anyone gave her another show.

      • SilverUnicorn says:

Disgusting they gave her another show.

Her weight wasn’t an issue, her behaviour was. She enabled a child molester, for God’s sake. Vile woman regardless of her size and weight.

    • Agree says:

She is disgusting, how could a mother keep a relationship with a kid molester that obtuse do her own daughter?!!
It is a shame that they gave her another show.
I just hope her daughter is ok and away from her and that disfunction enviroment.

    • NotSoSocialButterfy says:

She’s vomitorocious. For her pedophilic paramour to her feeding sh1t to her children ( I saw a clip of her ‘sketti?”- white noodles, margarine and ketchup) and pumping her preschool/elementary age child with “gogo” juice which was something horrible like Mountain Dew and maybe Redbull? IDK. A terrible, terrible mother and human being. Gross. Never watched, never will (had a teen who thought they were amusing- she’s in university and so now am no longer subjected to it in the background).

      • jwoolman says:

The kiddie pageant moms routinely get the kids hopped up on sugar and caffeine to counteract their fatigue and make them sparkly for the judges. It wasn’t just June who did that. And in her culture, kids commonly do drink a lot of soda, including caffeinated. Really does a number on people’s teeth in those regions, her kids are actually in better shape dentally than most. Not uncommon for young adults to be minus most of their teeth.

She does seem to be making an effort now to have the whole family eat healthy. The chief saboteurs are the kid’s dad and his new wife. While June is giving her veggies and fruit, her dad plies her with pastries and candy every chance he gets. And I don’t mean an occasional cookie. He really piles it on in huge quantities. I don’t know if he and his wife are just being vengeful through the kid or if he’s a “feeder” in the bad sense.

  2. Nicole says:

Pretty sure most of that was surgery. And I cannot believe another network gave her a show…oh wait yes I can.

    • Matomeda says:

I’m wondering how healthy her insides really are. I hope very much she changed her diet and exercise but I’m doubtful. And I hope so much they’re helping her kids with nutritionnow, too. And the predator stuff- I will not forget that, so no. And using the revenge body thing as motivation- no. Cheating is almost never about looks.

    • susiecue says:

Yes it was. I don’t believe she was 460 pounds tho. Maybe 350

    • jwoolman says:

She actually lost 100 pounds just during the show because she was so much more active. I think she lost more later before deciding she needed to do the surgery. I think she’s had some health scares, she’s at an age when the extra weight would start being really difficult to manage. She’s probably also worried about relapsing into old habits and thought the surgery would help her keep on track.

As far as getting back with the pedophile ex is concerned — like many women in that situation, I think she just didn’t believe the child. Happens a lot, unfortunately. They really needed some intensive family counseling and she herself needed to learn more about how molestation really works. June was extremely young when she had her oldest (I think she was only 15 when she gave birth, so some older guy was using her before that) and her mom was really the one raising that child, who would just visit June. So June was still young and emotionally inexperienced when it happened and also had some deep self-esteem issues, making it easier to believe the guy. The girl moved in with June later only for the show.

  3. lizzie says:

she’s still a pig who shouldn’t have access to her kids. I hate any glorification of this woman or any child molesting white trash loser from a TLC show. TLC is a channel dedicated to giving a platform to people who make bad decisions for themselves and their families and it disgusts me. Now WE-tv is a new channel off my watch list.

  4. juice says:

maybe they can make her prettier on the outside, but she was willing to date a predator, so she’s still ugly as hell on the inside.

    • Insomniac says:

Agreed. No diet or surgery in the world is going to fix that kind of ugly.

    • pinetree13 says:

That’s exactly what I was going to say! Outside looks better, inside just as rotten. She should be apologizing and begging her daughter for forgiveness but she doesn’t. I can’t even imagine the pain of having your mother chose the man who sexually abused you as a child, over you. Awful. Awful. Not too mention her steal from her kids trust funds. She’s a horrible human being.

  5. RussianBlueCat says:

She now looks like Kate Gosselin. Both not nice people inside or out

  6. Mrs. Welin-Melon says:

    Size 24 to size 12.

Let’s hope she gained some smarts when it comes to her man.

    • Millenial says:

I agree. And no way she was a size 18 before. I’d believe a size 28. And I’d guess her current size in the 12-14 range. She still looks great, but she’s not a size 4.

What is don’t get is what’s the point of reducing these numbers? I’d be just as impressed if they gave her honest before and after numbers.

      • Lex says:

The body in that red dress aint a US 12, no way. 8-10 more like!

      • Chinoiserie says:

Lex, I agree that in now way she is 12. I think people are too use to size 0 sized celebrities that they can’t judge what sizing really is. I think her waist could be a vanity size 4 from some brand so that would make her claim technically tight even if not actually correct. Size 8 sounds pretty right.

      • Christin says:

There are recent pap pics of her in workout wear on other sites, and she’s got a fuller face and chunkier legs than the dress photos.

I guess the Dugger family’s next move will be to gain 100 pounds each, to ensure a new show and keep that money rolling in.

      • puravidacostarica says:

Ditto. No way she started this at a size 18. Minimum size 28, with a finished size of 16.

    • marie says:

I even wonder at 24 if she was 460 lbs. Most people I know who are 20-24 are anywhere from 175-300 lbs, wiggle room depending on body type, so 460 at size 24? uhhhhhhh

      • Jag says:

No way was she a size 24. I’m 245 pounds and probably a size 30 now, and she was bigger than I am.

        And she’s absolutely not a size 4 now. I’d say a 12-14.

    • Pandy says:

Maybe she goes to the Kirstie Alley dress shop? All small sizes! You won’t believe your eyes (and nobody else will either).

Seriously though, at my heaviest, I was 163 lobs on 5’4″ and I was a US 14 … size 18 in her dreams.

      • justalark says:

Just to give her new size some perspective, I am 5’7″ and I weigh 130 pounds. I have a small frame, slender arms and legs, and I have been a US size 4 pretty consistently since my early twenties. Mama June has obviously lost a lot of body mass, but there is no way she is a size 4. When celebrities use “alternative facts” they just destroy their own credibility. The public is not stupid.

      • Lex says:

        Hmmm…

I am 5’8 and about 180 right now (am losing weight) – I could fit a US 10-12 on the bottom half – many fit/flare dresses or even tight fitting dresses/skirts I’d be a US 10…
So people’s body shapes really differ and play a part in this too!

It’s like the Amy Schumer stuff… Yeah, she isn’t a 2 or whatever but she also isn’t a 12. I’ve got a size 12 arse, hers is nowhere near it.

  7. nemera34 says:

It looks like 90% of her transformation came from surgeries and such. My concern is for her youngest daughter. June’s relationship with food and such has been passed to her daughter. And her daughter is suffering from it. She is overweight. I don’t watch the show nor plan on it. But if June was actually concerned she would have tried to do something that would also benefit her daughter. She used her daughter for stardom. Now what.

And no she is not a 4. And I don’t think she was an 18 to begin with. And to your point why the lie. Just say you are smaller.

    • Erinn says:

There’s no way in hell she was an 18 to begin with.

And you’re absolutely right – that little girl was eating absolute garbage, and was not healthy at all. If they worked with dietitians, I hope to god they showed that little girl something positive about food.

      • Tamara says:

If she was a size 18 and lost 100lbs she would not have needed weight loss surgery.

    • doofus says:

my comment was going to be “and now they need to help Honey Boo Boo”. I saw a clip on some gossip site of the new show, and it was sad to see that that cute (but overweight) little girl has become an (yeah, I’ll say it) obese pre-teen. I really hope that part of the mom-makeover was to give some help to her daughter diet/exercise-wise.

    • pinetree13 says:

Agreed, and she’s not over-weight, she’s obese (obesity looks different on children than adults so a lot of adults don’t realize their children are obese.)

  8. Nancy says:

I don’t understand why any station would promote a woman with so much baggage. Can’t imagine who the audience would be. I do think she is probably a lot healthier now, and maybe with this huge weight loss, she feels better about herself and will try to change on the inside where it matters most.

    • Esmom says:

Maybe she’ll try to change but I agree she doesn’t need the platform of a TV show to do it. When I think about all the amazing ordinary people doing amazing things, like a boy we know who is 18 and has had four occurrences of leukemia in his short life, that could be featured, it kills me.

Either most people are too smart to go on TV or TV execs are too dumb to find stories that can make a real difference.

      • Lil says:

People likes to see trivia stuff. They don’t want to see real life, everyday problem. Tv. Try to cover up reality. They want look, easy, beautiful, not real!

  9. Shijel says:

I’d rather someone help her daughters with their issues, diets, habits instilled in them by their trash, predator-dating mother.

  10. lolo86lf says:

I read somewhere that her motivation for losing weight and looking better was the fact that her ex husband got married again and she wanted him to see her looking great at his wedding. The motivation for improving one’s looks should be the desire to look better for ourselves not to for someone else or to please someone else. So mama June did all these surgeries and dieting and make over to spite her ex husband, this sounds so typical.

    • Annetommy says:

Yes, I hate that “revenge body” nonsense. Very psychologically unhealthy. And like others, I don’t care about her weight, allowing a known abuser near her daughter was appalling. While I don’t advocate vigilantism, the only reason I would let that man anywhere near me or my daughter would be to do him some serious damage.

    • Sigh... says:

And her ex’s fiancée is just as big, if not bigger than Mama June was, so her supposed main motivation is even more misplaced (more than likely the producers came to her first and she jumped on the extended attention/exposure, free surgery, and money).

    • HadleyB says:

Many women do that though after a break up — I did as well. Though I called mine the heartbreak diet — I couldn’t eat. And my self esteem was VERY low.

I thought he dumped me because of my age, my butt, my wrinkles, that I wasn’t fit.

I did do a makeover and got fit but for the wrong reasons. If I had had unlimited funds I shudder to think how I would look as I got Botox and some fillers but wanted the whole works for my face and I look back at pictures and think, why did I think that? I was fine.

  11. Moonstone says:

Can they make a show to change people’s ugliness on the inside? I’m pretty sure they can use a bunch of Hollywood people and that I’ll watch!!

  12. SusanneToo says:

And if you can believe it, years ago some dimbulb legislator justified defunding PBS because “TV has commercial educational channels like TLC and A&E.” Yeah, hah!

    • Tamara says:

Do those channels even educate anymore? It has been awhile since I have seen a decent documentary.

  13. littlemissnaughty says:

I read somewhere that this is her “revenge body”. Whatever. Size 4 my a**. Still a terrible mother, no nipping and tucking changes that. I cannot believe people like her get all this sh*t for free AND a TV show.

  14. Char says:

I am pretty sure I read that she had gastric bypass, so this was all surgery. & she is definitely not a size 4!

  15. Adrien says:

I don’t want to wish her congrats. It is her inside that needed a makeover. Don’t worry, June, it will all come back. Sorry, if I am cruel.

  16. L84Tea says:

She’s disgusting and a horrible mother. No weight loss will change that.

  17. Shambles says:

She’s still a POS. The concept of the show is disgusting (because all that matters is being hot, f*ck the kids or health or inner happiness), and she’s disgusting. I’m sorry, but she’s one of those people who’s obesity was a direct result of her life choices, and now she’s gotten a new body handed to her. She ate like trash, and she fed her children like trash, and so of course she was overweight. And now they’ve given her a magic eraser and thrown more money at her. Lovely. Her daughter is an unhealthy brat, and she’s an enabler of child abusers. F*ck em.

    • TQB says:

I wish they’d found some other family with bad habits who wanted to change and spent the money and the resources on helping them live better. So many people struggle because bad food is cheap and easy and getting started with exercise is hard. What a waste this is!

      • Tamara says:

That is the big problem. Healthy food is expensive. Poor people cannot afford to eat fresh fruits and veggies. Instead of helping people who need it we glorify terrible people like this. They seem to think oh if she is pretty that makes everything else ok. Such bad examples we are showing our kids. Maybe they should do a show about getting her and her kids into therapy.

  18. Syko says:

I saw some video of her somewhere, in passing, and she still sounds like the same old trash, and makes all those stupid faces. And if she was an 18 before her diet, then I’m a 6 right now. There is no way. She was at least a 24 or 26, and she might be a 14 now. It’s a helluva transformation, I’m not putting that down, and no doubt it’s healthier, but people like her and Kirstie Alley make me tired. June will blow right back up, because she didn’t learn healthy eating habits, and then she’s going to have to grow new skin to contain it all, since she had hers cut off.

  19. bacondonut says:

you can put lipstick on a pig but that pig is still gonna oink

  20. Patricia says:

I also read that this is her “revenge body”, then I saw a picture of Sugar Bear’s fiancé and she’s a woman who is more obese than June ever was. So … Sugar Bear has a type and he probably won’t even care that June lost this weight.

I can’t believe I even know about this trash woman and her life. But I do read when I see articles because I found Alana to be a sweet little girl with a fun sense of humor. I don’t know why people call her a brat, she always showed gratitude for what she was given and lots of love to her family.
It absolutely breaks my heart to see the current state of Alana’s health. She is just a child and she’s carrying so much extra weight, she must be medically obese by now. I was a little bit overweight at her age, and still at 33 I struggle with my weight. I can’t IMAGINE the struggle she is in for with her weight, her health, her self image. June felt like crap all the time? Well guess what June, so does your sweet innocent child who you have raised on cheese puffs and sketti. I’m so infuriated that June was given all this help while innocent Alana suffers.

    • TQB says:

And didn’t the child who was the abuse victim publicly call June out on her relationship? Those poor kids.

      • Namm says:

That abused child/victim is her own daughter who was 8 at the time and is now in her early 20s. The daughter was later brought up by grandmother (Junes own mother).

Her daughter was devastated and hurt and Junes mother was angry when they heard that June had reunited with the daughters abuser…

  21. Kelly says:

I wonder what the daughter who was molested and had her childhood ruined thinks about this. But hey, good for you, anything for more of that TV money, right? Maybe she can buy her kids some therapy to repair the damage from her crappy mothering.

  22. TQB says:

Didn’t miss the coverage. Let’s make this the last post for another 3 years, K?

  23. KBeth says:

Don’t care what size she is, a pig is still a pig.
    Who watches this crap???

  24. Moon says:

I’m a size 6 and I’m a tiny Asian girl with a butt and hips. No way I am bigger than honey boo boo’s mum.

  25. Desi says:

No way in hell is she a size 4. But it’s pretty obvious from the picture that she wasn’t a size 18 to begin with.

  26. Casi says:

There’s no way she was an 18 before. No. Way.

  27. Megan2 says:

So, I know this is a gossip site and she is technically a “celebrity”… but seriously, she is borderline abusive to her children at best, and enabling a child predator to abuse her children at worst. She is a garbage person who does horrible things. I would personally prefer if we could not write about her, because I think it’s abhorrent that someone like her be given a platform.

And yes; I realize I clicked on the article and commented. I only did so to make what is probably a super entitled and unwelcome request that we not promote child abusers by giving them the attention and celebrity they deserve. I won’t be reading or commenting on further articles about her, but I just think it’s important that people not forget what a horrible person this is.

    • sauvage says:

I second that notion. If the internet ignores her, maybe she’ll go away, eventually.

  28. RuddyZooKeeper says:

I recently measured middle school girls for school play costuming. Nearly all sized 0 to 4. Up close and in person, size 4 is teeny tiny. There’s just no way.

  29. Lisa says:

I’m sure she’s in there, under all that airbrushing…

    • Christin says:

Oh, pap photos look quite different. It’s her, minus the photoshop of the dress photos.

  30. Shark Bait says:

I am way more concerned with poor Alana. I hope someone is there to teach her healthy habits and protect her from any creeps Mama June brings around.

    • Snowflake says:

I hope so too. She needs to learn healthy eating, so she won’t be struggling with her weight

  31. Meggin says:

Don’t get me wrong, she looks a lot better but in no way is she a “Size 4” in the after picture. Speaking as someone who is naturally small and is a size 6. Maybe a size 10 or 12? lol

  32. Linda says:

You would have to be 8 feet tall to be 199 pounds and a size 4. Lol

  33. Kate says:

    Still ugly inside.

  34. adastraperaspera says:

The network should have to donate the proceeds from this show to survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I find it appalling that in this day and age, when so much education is out there about the damaging effects of child abuse, shows keep popping up as a backlash–portraying women and girls as nothing but a blob of a body that needs to be sculpted to appeal to men. And this time the woman is a child abuser herself. It’s sick. I hope they get zero audience.

  35. jenn12 says:

Guess what, ‘Merica? She fed her kids crap, used one to support the family, exposed them to predators, made excuses for the predator who raped her kid and then started seeing him again, but all is well, because she! lost! WEIGHT! She is more visually palatable now, and, really, in the scheme of things, what else matters? Forget all the horrible things she’s done: weight loss, ladies!

    • geekychick says:

this!!!! i just can’t believe how low some people will go.

    • Madailein says:

Exactly. There is a mentality in Hollywood like this, a kind of unwritten mantra: in entertainment, it doesn’t matter who you are, or what you do, or how you feel; all that matters is how you look—and how much money we can get from you as a result. That obsession w physical “standards has spread throughout much of the country, and weight loss seems to be our holy grail. (I’ve lived in L.A. a long time now and though there are lots of non-superficial people here, as well, that image conscious shallowness does prevail absurdly in parts of Southern California.) And it’s SO ugly: an absolutely grotesquely cruel, greedy, selfish opportunist of a woman like Mama June getting a new show b/c of her enormous makeover/ weight loss. Weight loss!?!? How about, she does something good and human and inspiring to deserve public attention, like feeds needful families, or even just learns how to feed her own children healthy foods, or comes to believe her older daughter’s claims of sexual abuse, and feels–at last–remorse and shame that she continued to date her child’s molester. If only a good human being could be gleaned from her—but there is none to salvage in her. So show business conspires to make her a lot thinner (which has begun to seem like the American Dream, from how some people talk of weight loss) and she’s a star, again—more glittery and shiny than ever. This is what Hollywood and the fashion world has converted many women to believe—that they cannot fully love themselves or be loved unless they are slender. Hopefully, most people will manage to see how indelibly ugly June remains, no matter what her next disguise, and the show will quickly burn out on the horizon.

  36. Skins says:

This is a new low, even for tv

  37. Chelly says:

Honestly she lost the weight via surgery concerning health reasons, etc. But what about “Honey Boo Boo”? She’s too young for this type of elective surgery, is her mother even working w her & exercising, eating healthier & including her in this “transformation”? Or are they opting to wait until she IS of age to have gastro-surgery? Idk, this reeks of momentum, not a lifestyle change

  38. Deana says:

I just bought this same exact dress for my daughter in a size 4. There’s no way in hell Mama June is wearing that same size.

  39. jana says:

They say she weighed over 400lbs, which is no way in hell a size 18, and now claim at 162 lbs she is a size 4…in what world are those sizes accurate? She would have to be 7 feet tall to make those numbers work.

  40. Scout says:

    Size 18? Sure, Jan.

  41. raincoaster says:

    And by “a size 18 to a size 4” she meant “from a size 4x to a size 10.”

  42. JustJen says:

I had gastric bypass surgery last year, and I’m disgusted beyond belief that I had to jump through hoops to get insurance to cover it: at least 6 appts with a dietician, clearance by specialists- cardiologist and pulmonologist plus a special trip to the gastroenterologist (that was an adventure…) A mandatory exercise class, a class to learn to eat for after the surgery and so much more, just so that insurance would pay and I would be mentally and physically able to get as much as possible out of the surgery. Now, 9 months out I’m down 90 lbs and I’ve dropped from a size 18-20 to a 8-10 (depending on how it runs). This dolt just had to act like a dumba## and a network covers the cost and then some?? Hades will literally freeze over before I watch ANYTHING on TLC again.

**I had the surgery for health reasons. I have sarcoidosis and years of prednisone have taken their toll. I do feel much better and I breathe soooo much better.

    • Madailein says:

JustJen: Congratulations on your weight loss, that’s awesome! It sounds like it was a hard, taxing, and painful process in many ways; it’s wonderful you have the strength and discipline to do it!
