Did Susan Boyle have two profane outbursts in public?

Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Susan Boyle may be letting a bad temper ruin her chances at superstardom. People are rooting for the 48 year-old Scottish singer to take home the lead prize in the competition show, and Susan seemed poised to do just that despite some talented competition. Now there’s news that Susan may have had two separate public outbursts in which she was witnessed swearing loudly. If the public turns on her now she’s going to have a hard time turning her YouTube fame into something more substantial.

This story originates in the Daily Mail, which delights in smearing celebrities, and Susan’s rep denies that it happened and has a perfectly reasonable explanation for her encounter with police. Every time we’ve seen Susan on camera she seems like a friendly, down-to-earth lady who doesn’t let things get to her. It’s hard to believe this is true, but Susan’s favorite judge, Piers Morgan, confirmed in a recent interview that she’s been having trouble:

According to British reports, police intervened after the Britain’s Got Talent finalist, 48, cussed out two strangers in front of guests in the lobby of the Wembley Plaza Hotel in North London on Wednesday.

Boyle – the Scottish singing sensation who won over millions with a YouTube performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables and advanced to the finals last weekend with her rendition of “Memory” from Cats — was overheard yelling: “How f**king dare you! You can’t f**king talk to me like that.”

Police officers who were stationed at the hotel then approached Boyle and asked if there was a problem. She shouted, “Of course, there’s a f**king problem.”

In tears, Boyle then stormed off, as her family, production staff and police quickly followed. No arrests were made, and Boyle went back to her room after the incident.

A rep for Boyle tells London’s The Times that the incident was caused by a pesky reporter.

“A journalist from a tabloid paper provoked her, the police just happened to be at the hotel and escorted said journalist out after making sure Susan was OK,” the spokesperson told the paper.

It wasn’t Boyle’s only outburst.

According to London’s Daily Mail, the singer lost her cool Tuesday after judge Piers Morgan praised rival singer Shaheen Jafargholi, 12, on Britain’s Got Talent.

After Piers told the boy he was “the best singing performance we’ve seen so far,” Boyle — who was watching the show on the hotel bar’s TV — was overheard yelling “f*** off” before making an obscene gesture at the screen and storming off.

The paper reports that the incident was witnessed by several stunned hotel guests. (Her rep denies the report, insisting that Boyle left the hotel bar before Shaheen was even shown.)

On CBS’ The Early Show Thursday, Britain’s Got Talent’s Morgan said he’s “feeling more supportive” of Boyle “today than I was before, because I feel really sorry for Susan.

“From what I hear,” he told co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez, “she’s been in tears the last two days. She even threatened to leave the show yesterday at one stage, because of the sheer amount of pressure on her.

“And you have to remember with Susan, she’s a 48-year-old lady from a tiny village in Scotland who has never been exposed to anything like this kind of attention. And I think she’s really feeling the heat.

“The hotel she’s in is crawling in tourists, crawling in the media. I think maybe she overreacted. I don’t know what happened. She denies, apparently, some of the things that have been reported.

“But either way, I know she’s feeling a lot of pressure, and I think that most people watching this show and hearing about this will feel natural sympathy toward her. And I just hope it all calms down for the final. Because, on Saturday, she sings for the competition.”

Kaiser and I were talking about this, and she thinks that people might like Boyle more if it turns out that she’s a diva. She also said that “just because someone cusses up a storm, doesn’t mean they’re bad people. It’s not like she called Piers Morgan a motherf’ing c*cksucker. She just dropped a casual f-bomb!” That’s true enough. I really hope that Susan gets her act together though and is able to prepare for Saturday’s performance. She had six weeks to do her follow up show last weekend and she did a decent version of Memory from Cats but she just kind of stood there after a little bit of a shaky start. I want to see this woman wow the crowd in her next performance and show that she really owns that stage. We all get subject to stress and nerves but Susan is about to have her dreams come true. It would be a shame to see all that dashed by a few moments of anger in an otherwise admirable – and atypical – rise to fame.

This would be news if it were 1847.

  2. Rosanna says:

The woman is not “difficult”. She’s ***Scottish***. Have you ever had a Scottish friend? They are feisty and they cuss like a sailor. But they are wonderful people. Somehow you Americans tend to think that cussing means a person is bad. I agree that it might mean they are rude but rude and bad are not the same thing.

  3. Lacy says:

Her favorite judge is Piers Morgan… Piers Anthony is an author who is much older.

  4. guest says:

    hilarious.

  5. Celebitchy says:

haha thanks Lacy! I have read some Piers Anthony and this is probably how I got confused.

Well what a surprise. The media backlash has finally arrived. Who could reasonably expect her not to be stressed and a bit fractious at this stage? She was deliberately provoked in a public place in front of other people and she responded, like any normal person, in abnormal circumstances, would do.

Her fate is now the responsibility of every single media outlet out there that decided to buy so willingly into this angel thing when, in reality, she’s never been anything other than a kind, ordinary, down-to-earth woman with a good – not great – voice. She didn’t ask for the hype, she had no control over it and the willingness of the public to now collude in this media backlash is sad and sickening.

Maybe it wasn’t made clear at the time but she has mild learning difficulties, which makes her that bit more vulnerable to pressure than others. All finger wagging should be directed at the media, not Susan Boyle.

  7. Carrie says:

Oh my, she used the “F” word a few times. Who hasn’t used the “F” word?? And who hasn’t cursed someone out??

  8. rbsesq says:

Amen, Rosanna. Although I don’t think it’s limited to the Scots. My grandmother’s best friend was Welsh and that woman could make a sailor blush. When I was a kid, I was shocked by her – this little old lady who said really bad words. When I was older, I thought she was the greatest character EVER!

  9. Tess says:

Absolutely brilliant fashion sense. Susan, all is forgiven, just keep stylin’ for us.

Love the fluffy pink scarf with the faux tortoise shell heels.

I think people need to give her a break. This woman has been built up by the media as the ugly duckling that charmed the world. Then, she was criticized for trying to pretty herself up after all the attention. Wouldn’t you want to? The woman has been on a roller coaster ride for the past month and I imagine is having difficulty with her new found fame. Her nerves are getting to her as seen on her last performance. But who could live up to the kind of expectations that have been placed on her. On top of that, people have to acknowledge too that this is a woman who has been picked on all her life and has a mild intellectual delay (if I’m not mistaken). All of this has to be very anxiety provoking. I, for one, am rooting for her and don’t see the issue with her swearing at a few people who were picking on her.

  11. KateNonymous says:

So what? She’s Scottish. A lot of the UK and Ireland does not treat the “f-bomb” like it’s an f-bomb. For many people it’s like punctuation.

  12. Dani says:

People in Ireland say “feck” “f*ck” and everything in between. It’s just natural. I’m not going to fault the woman for staying true to her culture. She’s not American after all.

  13. Levi says:

My neighbour are Scottish, lovely people, accents so thick I didn’t understand a single word for the first two years. Both have the biggest most generous, kind hearts in the world, funny, darling folks but the salty colourful language that escapes those charming individuals would make an average 18 year-old with an Marilyn Manson tattoo sound like a choirboy. Susan Boyle is a delight, I’d love to buy her a pint.

  14. Joe says:

I actually like the profane side of her and I bet she can knock a couple back with the best of them…but as for her diva behavior…screw this hag.

  15. ash says:

    You F***ing get em Susan!

  16. ash says:

…and I forgive you for the scarf.

  17. ChristinaT says:

damn, i curse all the time… i’m a huge potty mouth… and if someone said something inappropriate to me i’d let them have it too… so basically, who cares :/

  18. Ling says:

    The journalist deserved it.

    Yes, I was there.

    (Not really.)

  19. AC says:

    WTF is she wearing?!?!?!?

  20. Annabelle says:

The media / papz / public pretty much abuses these people, and then slanders them + attempts to ruin them when they react?

  21. skye says:

She was undulating her hefty carcass and making quips to the judges from the very beginning, a vast contrast from the shy, sheltered image the show is trying to cultivate around her. She is most likely a cheeky, arrogant diva, and it is beginning to show. Ugly is as ugly does and her musical gift doesn’t save her from being rude.
