Solange Knowles in Thom Browne at the Met Gala: chic or ski-coat-fug?

Metropolitan Costume Institute Benefit Gala: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

Much like Rihanna, Solange Knowles cares. Solange cares about fashion, she cares about the theme, she cares about the Met Gala. And because Beyonce probably spent the night quietly gestating with the Wonder Twins, Solange was the only Knowles woman at the 2017 Met Gala. She had to represent the whole family. And did she do the Knowles family justice in this Thom Browne… dress? Are we calling this a dress? It’s not a dress. It’s a puffy ski coat. Is this fashion? Is this avant-garde? Or is this just… odd? Like, I’m sure Solange had many reasons why she wore this and why it’s on-theme but mostly I just think… damn, she could have done something really cool with the theme and this is just a wasted opportunity.

Halle Berry wore Versace. At first glance, I thought this was just a standard gown with a crazy train. But no! She’s wearing pants! This Versace is actually a jumpsuit/catsuit… with a crazy train. Halle’s interpretation – or Donatella’s interpretation – of the theme was “pants with a sculptural element.” And I don’t hate it. I kind of wish Halle had done her big hair, like she did at the Oscars.

    • ichsi says:

      SososososososoSO no.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. It’s like a Canadian Winter Gala Dress! I’m having a hot flash just looking at Solange.
Halle looks bad all around. AGAIN something sheer … not good make up.

I expected more from Solange since she seems to wear Comme de Garcons-inspired outfits in almost every photo shoot she does. She could have really gone all out here, conceptually.

  3. Shijel says:

    Wow, love it.

  4. Snazzy says:

Ugh, hate it. Looks warm though

  5. Maria F. says:

it actually feels to subdued for Solange. I agree that she could have come up with something much more structural or dramatic.

This feels like a regular Friday night for her…

    • Megan says:

I was expecting something really fabulous from Solange. She takes amazing fashion risks and this should have been her night. Practical outwear is such a let down, especially in May.

  6. justcrimmles says:

Dare I say Solange’s ensemble was… cute. She went with a theme, and imho, it works for this event. I really like her shoes.

    Halle’s train, I love.

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, I think Solange nailed it as far as the theme goes. Comme des Garçons is not about body-con, beading, sheer or any of that “Kardashian-style” stuff, and Solange got it. I also love those shoes!

      • G says:

Yup, Solange gets it and she got it. Not pretty, not sexy, and not supposed to be. She’s fabulous.

    • Sarah says:

      Solange—-the interesting sister.

And Halle Berry just can NOT look bad. God, she is a marvel of nature!!!

    Ski coat fug

  8. Keri says:

    Fug

  9. detritus says:

    I love Halle’s jumpsuit.
The train is absolutely gorgeous with the gold edged scallops.

Im never a huge fan of sporty chic, so Solanges isn’t doing it for me.

  10. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

I actually love both looks. Solange for being one of the few to actually dress on theme and Halle for…. being Halle. I cannot stand jumpsuits or ruffles but this fits well and I like seeing Halle in it.

I just like seeing Halle and Solange anywhere, period.

  11. V4Real says:

Hall Berry is so freaking gorgeous I can’t stand this 50 year old woman.

  12. Danielle says:

6all I thought of was goops complaining it was hot. Poor Solange might get heat stroke.

  13. Giulia says:

Solange is on point, I like it. Nope to her head styling though.

  14. Lightpurple says:

She brought her sleeping bag too! I actually would like to see what Solange has on under the ski parka. It looks like pants made of the same material? She tried to be on theme, so she gets credit for that but that outfit looks uncomfortably hot for May.

Im 100 here for it, in IG she had so many makeup and hair snippets also she was having her the Best Time, there was intention behind everything, she nixed an abstract lip seems like, the husband also looked super nice, he is very very stylish and youthful for a man in his.. 50? I believe?

  15. Jenns says:

At least it’s interesting. I’ll take Solange over Jessica Chastain any day.

  16. serena says:

    Damn, Halle looks gorgeous!

  17. Ankhel says:

Solange looks like she’s hunting the yeti that ate half of Halle’s bird.

    CRAZY EYES
    BETTAH WATCH OUT

is she pregnant? the pic on IG with the crimson (burgundy? dark wine red?) mini dress…looking bumpy.
i wouldn’t like this on anyone but her. solange can get away with just about anything. sorta the way rihanna can, but then plus a bit. like, they can both do weird and elevate it.
is it because they both walk their own path and have purses chock full ‘o zero fahks to give?
they both intrigue me, fashion wise. like, i find odd fashion to be ugly…unless they wear it…then suddenly fugly becomes fanfuckingtastic.
anyway, those ice skater boot shoes are awesome.
she made puffer jacket chic. HOW DID YOU DO THAT, LADY??? lol.

edit to add: that must be it. they always all ways wear the clothes, never ever ever the other way around. and add hefty doses of “i fit me best”, and you have category busting. so refreshing. le sigh.

As someone else already said–nope and no!
