Reese Witherspoon in Thierry Mugler at the Met Gala: pretty or plain?

When Reese Witherspoon showed up at the Met Gala last night the E! panel crowed over the fact that she wasn’t wearing yet another mermaid gown. I guess Reese is as bad as Sophia Vergara when it comes to sticking to that one style, but she mixed it up somewhat in a one shoulder black and navy Thierry Mugler gown. That said, this is a rather boring look for the Met Gala. It’s got that one puffy sleeve and I like the bold cobalt ribbed fabric for the bodice. It isn’t a completely safe choice (see: Gwyneth Paltrow) and it’s very 80s Dynasty. Her makeup is 80s too so she’s consistent.

Here’s Doutzen Kroes in deep red Brock Collection. I love how the folded sleeves are only slightly different. You can see the attention to detail with the ribbing on the bodice. This is a fantastic gown that’s so subtly done and it does fit with the theme. Plus she just looks ethereal with that beachy hair and light makeup.

Miranda Kerr was really feeling herself in a silver Oscar de la Renta gown with a poppy print. like the other women who wore de la Renta last night she was not on theme on all. She looked like a cookie cutter princess though and she was obviously happy about that.

Lily Collins was a happy goth clown in black and pink Giambattista Valli. Her styling is just awful. That wig! Also, this started off as pants with a bustier and then they threw that pink tulle skirt on top. You know who might work this? Rooney Mara.

Janelle Monae is very much a black and white theme dresser. Just look at any of her events over the past year. She does black and white statement gowns and she goes bold and the Met Gala was the place for it. This is Ralph and Russo and it’s a giant gown with a bunch of different elements in keeping with the theme. Check out the high feathered collar and I especially like the messy layering of the skirt.

  2. QQ says:

Janelle looks like an actual goddess emerging from the foam of the sea, dont @ me about this

Reese is Reeseing , is not bad, is just staid… why go and do boring? I mean is a networking occasion but I wonder, if you’re paying and going through the trouble of attending etc

    • Sunglasses Aready says:

Reese, Honey, this an old lady’s dress. Even worse this is a House Wives dress.

    • minx says:

Yeah, exactly. Don’t go unless you’re going to commit to taking a chance. This isn’t some ordinary red carpet event.

    • Neverwintersand says:

Janelle is killing it! How can such a tiny lady not be drowned in this statement dress? It takes some serious skills!

  3. Lucy2 says:

I like Reese’s, even if it is a little boring for this event.
Don’t care for the droopy shoulders look of the red gown.
Janelle’s face is perfection and I love her bold style.
I actually love Miranda’s dress, but it’s not right for this event and I wish it were on someone else, as I find her very annoying.
    Lily…no.

  4. Jenns says:

I like Reese’s dress, but the hair and makeup is bad.

  5. Pumpkin Pie says:

    Pretty!

  6. Carol says:

I think Reese has got to be the most boring dresser. I hate her look. JAnelle reminds of the Bridesmaids scene where MAYa Rudolf took a dump on street while wearing a wedding dress

    • GingerCrunch says:

Carol!!!! Recalling my fav movie! 😃 Reese looks matronly these days.

  7. Lizzie says:

Reese looks beautiful but boring. She tried though as this is outside her comfort zone. she has a great figure and can wear any silhouette and can look both sweet or icy. She should try edgier looks more often bc I think she could pull it off.

Where is Nicole Kidman?! The rest of the BLL crew was there! She would have slayed the theme.

  8. Sage says:

I love Reese’s dress. It’s the hair and makeup that ruined the look.

  9. KBeth says:

I typically like Reese’s look but this dress/hair/makeup is a huge miss..
I don’t know the woman in the red dress but that color is fabulous.

  10. Henry Barnill says:

Let’s hope she didn’t get drunk again. She’s really become an alcoholic throughout the years.

  11. chaine says:

    Reese, way to matronly. Boring.

Janelle–the collar of this dress makes her look like she has a big ol’ scraggly beard, so I have to say this is the worst look of the night.

  12. Chaucer says:

I thought Lily looked great. Wtf had Miranda done to her face though?!

    • Otaku fairy says:

I especially liked her first look.

    • emilybyrd says:

Chaucer, I think it might be that she had too much sodium the previous day or one too many drinks–those can make people with slightly fuller faces look puffier the next day (take it from me, somebody with chubby cheeks!). Things that’ll cause an average person’s body to bloat will cause bloat directly in the face for people with chubbier cheeks.

  13. lily says:

I love Janelle Monae, she is a beautiful woman and she always looks great, so stylish. I would love to see her in a fashion campaign.

  14. Pandy says:

Doutzen looks great and really comfortable. I’m jealous. I think Janelle should have changed her theme dressing to a different color just for this one night. I’m bored with her look. Reese looks like mother of the bride and the makeup is horrible. Miranda looks silly.

  15. enora says:

nope Janelle looks like Conchita Wurst….

  16. bella says:

I like them all, especially Reese’s’. I jus don’t like Lily’s wig. I know that they were going for a goth look, but it is too severe.
