I was hoping this story would turn out to be false or exaggerated, but now that People Magazine is running it there seems to be a sad element of truth to it. Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who took second place in the “Britain’s Got Talent finals” on Saturday night, is said to have been taken to a clinic after an emotional breakdown following the show.

Susan shot to fame seven weeks ago with her haunting and powerful rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” on the “Britains Got Talent” auditions, which quickly became the most viewed video clip on the Internet of all time. She’s a down-to-earth 48 year-old unemployed woman from a small town in Scotland. Up until recently it seemed like she was dealing with everything well, and she did several gracious interviews on big shows like Oprah and Larry King Live. We heard last week that Susan was having trouble with the pressure and constant attention, though. She got upset and was overheard swearing loudly in two separate incidents ahead of the show’s final. She ultimately took second place in the competition, behind the dance troupe Diversity. That seemed fair considering that the only other song we heard from her, “Memory” from Cats, was a little shaky.

Susan was calm and kind on stage when she lost, but you could understandably see some strain on her face. She is said to have had problems handling it all after the show, and an ambulance had to be called to her hotel. She is now resting in a private clinic.

Following a crushing defeat on Britain’s Got Talent, Susan Boyle was admitted to a private clinic in London Sunday for treatment of exhaustion, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

Police were summoned to Boyle’s hotel in the British capital, where the Scottish singing sensation exhibited symptoms of “emotional breakdown” following the show’s Saturday finale, the paper reports.

“We were called about 6 p.m. on Sunday to a central London hotel to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act,” a police spokesperson tells the paper.

“Police attended at the request of ambulance personnel and the woman was taken voluntarily to a clinic. No one was arrested and there were no allegations of crime.”

A spokeswoman at London’s Priory Clinic – where Boyle was reportedly rushed – would not confirm or deny whether the star had been admitted, the paper reports.

Britain’s Got Talent producers released the following statement: “Following Saturday night’s show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained. She has been seen by her private GP who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery … We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery.”

Susan seems to have a bright future ahead of her. She’s beloved around the world and can easily have a long and profitable career – if that’s what she wants. Maybe she hasn’t had enough time to process everything and think about whether this is the route she wants to take with her life. It’s got to be hard to come to terms with the quick way her world was turned around, and all of that has got to take a toll on a person. She went from living a quiet existence in the same small town she grew up in to becoming famous and having paparazzi outside her door. Hopefully Susan will get the rest and help she needs to decide what she wants to do next.

Judge Piers Morgan has confirmed that Susan is taking some time off, saying “I spoke to her yesterday for about half an hour and she’s fine. She’s gone in for some rest. She needs to get away from everyone – get away from the show, from the media, the public, and just have a bit of down time to herself.” We’re all rooting for you Susan, take care of yourself.

Susan was born with minor brain damage and has learning difficulties, so she probably isn’t equipped to deal with the issues that she’s facing. This has all the earmarks of a potential tragedy – I hope the producers of Britain’s Got Talent do something to help her – now.

^^^I hope this isn’t true, and that it’s just internet garbage from someone who can’t stand the fact that an ordinary woman stole the spotlight from Brangelina and their ilk.

  3. gg says:

oh, poor lady! I feel so bad for her. Take care of yourself Susan, the public still adores you and will wait eagerly for your album. You’re already a huge success!

In all honesty I don’t think I could deal with all that pressure.

dirtyoldman, if you’re referring to my post, Susan Boyle’s brain damage is pretty much common knowledge, not internet garbage.
See this link, for one, for information:

And stop trolling, while you’re at it.

and D.O.M. — it’s all well documented, she has learning “difficulties” and has trouble coping with this craziness.

I must be THE only bitch who has yet to hear this one sing. I only know of her via the dailymail.

If you watched the moments before they announced the winner, you could see that she was on the actual verge of a breakdown.
She looked so intense and miserable and like she wanted to kill somebody (think Kathy Bates in “Misery”) I felt really bad for her.
She’s been hounded like an animal and treated like a freak show frankly, how would you like every interviewer to basically say to your face over and over again, all over the world “well geeze, you really look like shit and are to me super pathetic cause you are an old maid cat lady but you sing real nice” -well aint that comforting!
No one could take that kind of crap, and even less if you are fragile to start off with.

Thanks for posting that link, nanster. It was really informative. Having been a teacher, I know just how terrible kids can be when they think another child is “slow”. I just feel terrible for Susan and hope she’s back on her feet soon.

I don’t get all this celebs can handle this media pressure. I’m glad to be a nobody I think I will go crazy if I was famous. Though I wouldn’t mind being rich.

  12. Julia says:

I’ll take the money – you can keep the fame…

  13. ChristinaT says:

awww poor woman… she reminds me of my mommy… her face and hairstyle… except my mommy is much older… so i always hope for the best for her because of that loose connection…

  14. Aspen says:

That poor woman! She wanted to sing for a contest and wound up with overnight celebrity invasion. Frankly, I know I wouldn’t escape that kind of abrupt interruption and intrusion without cursing out a few people.

I absolutely adore her personality, and I hope she gets to make her record and then goes back to being Susan Boyle in her home in Scotland so that she can be happy and left alone by the press.

  15. j. ferber says:

I agree, Aspen. I hope she can quietly make music cd’s and avoid all the media frenzy surrounding her now. Maybe she can also change her management so that her “people” are all on the same page, consulting both with Susan and her family, to do what is best for Susan. She’s a gifted woman and deserves to have success on her own terms.

  16. fran says:

This poor woman. What an awful story.

The night the medics came for her, she called for her CAT & an aide put the animal on the phone…

How ***ALONE*** she must be feeling.

It’s nothing short of criminal the way the TV show exploited her. Horrible.

  17. Shelby says:

I saw something in the press the other day about Simon Cowell wanting to drag her all over North America to perform. I hope she tells him to go to hell.

Susan, you’re perfectly wonderful just the way you are. Whatever you decide to do, we’ll always feel privileged to have enjoyed your performances!
