John Mayer started the #KyloRenchallenge, what is it?

I finally made my way to the theater to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi over the holiday. There were some very cool scenes and a couple of ideas I appreciated but I definitively sit in the ‘underwhelmed’ camp for the movie as a whole. I won’t go into to detail because I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade who loved it and, honestly, I don’t want to get into spoilers that some may still not want to read.

However, one *SPOILER* that is necessary for this post is that there is a scene in which Kylo Ren is shirtless. He is wearing black pants that either have a high waist or blend into a black bandage that swaddles his midsection. I won’t tell you why he appears like this because honestly, I haven’t a clue outside of opportunity. According to (the article has spoilers) co-sound supervisors Matthew Wood and Ren Klyce it was designed to explain a story telling device. It didn’t further the story for me but then, I didn’t need that device explained either. However, we all got to ogle Adam Driver with his shirt off so it wasn’t all a waste (I know, “all a waist” would have been much punnier). So, we were given a glorious few moments of Kylo sans chemise and what happens? John Mayer has to go and ruin it. Kind of.

John decided to mimic Kylo’s look and post it to Instagram with the #KlyloRenChallenge:

John is not in bad shape. Neither is former Marine Adam Driver. So, I think it is safe to say that this is simply not a good look. That, however, has not stopped men accepting the #KlyloRenChallenge and posting their own spin on the look in various poses. And I have to say, I am kind of loving it. Especially the more creative ‘challengers’:

I may not have loved his movie, but I do think director Rian Johnson has been a real sport about it, including his response to the #KlyloRenChallenge (I’m sure having his movie gross over $1 billion dollars worldwide isn’t hurting):

Some of the ones on Twitter especially on dudes that don’t have Driver’s body are super funny.

The shirtless thing was weird and I thought it was to add sexual tension between Rey and Kylo Ren. But I thought both actors did a really good job in those scenes.

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Yeah i thought it was weird and that it was used to setup some sort of hot/sexy romance between the two of them – although I still think she’ll end up hooking up with him over Finn.

      • Ankhel says:

Nah, Kylo’s going to go out just like his grandpa – redemption followed by death. He’s got a bit of light left in him, but he’s been too much of an evil fuck to let him ride into the sunset on an at-at walker with Rey. Plus, Disney do love copying the old Star Wars movies.

NO ONE is going to beat Adam Driver at this!

I saw The Last Jedi and I loved it… and I am not a fan of those movies and I always go to cinema because my husband and sister and her boyfriend are big fans, so we usually have a fun night out.. but this time I loved the movie it was really different from your tipical star wars movie. I think Adam Driver is amazing actor and Kylo Ren is the one that makes this movie, at least for me. And he looks good. It was sad to see Carrie Fisher. I am looking forward to episode 9. Sorry for my english, not my first language

hate john mayer but this made me laugh. all i could think about in that scene was ‘why are his pants so high?”

when i was younger, i had an ex-kickboxer instructor who wore his kickboxing/boxing shorts that way. everyone in class could see that he was doing it to hide his protruding gut.

People really thirst over Adam Driver???? He’s so bland and basic? God I guess any white men with dark hair can pass as attractive these days.
I hated the shirtless scene, there was no reason for it and Rian Johnson admitted he only added it to make Rey uncomfortable. The female gaze is one thing, but this clearly wasn’t the female gaze, it was just about making a female character in an uncomfortable situation with a man who tortured her two days previous.

Co-signed…. what i don’t understand is why I don’t find Adam Drive attractive at all but Keanu Reeves melts my panties????

      • SJhere says:

Well, let me help you here honey…it’s because Keanu Reeves is HOT and has been for almost 30 years straight! Adam Driver is tall with good hair but he is NO Keanu.

        Keanu forever! 🙂

I don’t get it either because he is so unfortunate looking. A great actor-Star Wars movies aside. He was wonderful in Silence. But that’s a solid no for me. I don’t really get it and can’t even justify it through his personality because he seems like a giant hipster douche.

      • DiligentDiva says:

IDK what his personality is like, he hardly seems to show one to be honest. I’ve heard he’s super awkward and shy, and he was also a marine so maybe he was never fully de-programed. Of all the cast John, Daisy, and Oscar is where it’s at in terms of personality. They all seem to be such a laugh.
IDK why Driver is getting this amount of attention from women though, he’s just not that appealing. If anything I thought Oscar would be getting this. He’s the most attractive out of all of them.

      • ichsi says:

I didn’t get it after TFA, but then I saw him in a few other films – including Inside Llewyn Davis where he’s just hilariously funny – and I fell for the talent. He has unfortunate ears and not a classic heroic leading man chin, but boy has a very expressive face and uses his large body like I haven’t seen many other actors use them before. He can convince me of pretty much everything he does and I find that very attractive in an actor crush.

        Also I looooooved TLJ :DD

    • GreenTurtle says:

Yeah, he’s not what I’d call handsome. I think it’s more that he’s a good actor and has real stage/screen presence.

John Mayer is thirsty as f*ck, KyloRen challenge is stupid and this a worse nothingburger story than Rachel Weisz+Daniel Craig’s airport arrival post😒

  7. Ebbing says:

The director also said Adam ended up looking so good from his mandated physical training they decided to put it in. I thought his toplessness was relevant to his thingy with the other character but I was wondering why his pants were so high. Makes it more otherwordly I guess. Adam reminds me of Keanu Reeves. John Mayer will try for attention in any way.

I actually enjoyed The Last Jedi, there were some moments I could take or leave but the good way outweighs the bad. It works for me as a development and emotionally, and the actors are terrific – especially Ridley, Driver (they do have chemistry) and most of all, the magnificent Mark Hamill.
