Every single year!! Every single year, I forget about the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Palm Springs rolls around right before the Golden Globes, and many, many celebrities make the short trek to Palm Springs for some Oscar campaigning in the warm, arid air every year. The film festival makes the celebrities dress up too: there’s an opening night gala, and red carpet events throughout the festival. Most celebrities are in town for Globes, so every year, the festival is really well attended. Saoirse Ronan is being honored for her (wonderful) work in Lady Bird, and she wore this tragic Gucci gown to the opening night ceremony. I hate this gown with a passion, but I love her. Her hair is interesting these days – with this cut and color, she reminds me of someone. Who? Like… a young Sarah Paulson? Combined with Evan Rachel Wood?
Also in attendance at the opening night of Palm Springs: literally every possible Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee. Best Supporting Actress is LIT this year. Many think that Laurie Metcalf has the best chance as “the mom” in Lady Bird. She was wonderful too. She wore Christian Siriano and she seems to be having a great time.
Allison Janney will be competitive for I, Tonya (she plays Tonya’s mom). She wore Lela Rose.
Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji. Octavia will be competitive for The Shape of Water. I like that Octavia knows her body, and she sticks with Tadashi Shoji for most red carpet looks. She looks great! This is honestly one of my favorite dresses from this event, I would love to own this dress.
Mary J. Blige will be competitive for Mudbound! She wore Elie Saab, which… I’m not crazy about, but it’s fine.
Holly Hunter has an outside chance of getting nominated for The Big Sick, which I loved and I am pretty much a Holly Hunter Superfan, so I want MOAR HOLLY. She happily posed with Kumail Nanjiani.

I’m getting Diane Krueger vibes, but yes, I can see ERW also (it’s the hair I think). She’s a stunning young woman, that’s for sure.
She’s a dead ringer for ERW here. I like the colors but the dress is generally hideous.
My thoughts: Oh, some fledgling designer friend Saoirse wanted to help. A good design in there somewhere, but they aren’t very skilled at sewing yet, and they could obviously only afford cheap satin. Wait, GUCCI?!
1. The art of forehead Botox has yet to be perfected.
2. Saoirse Ronan’s hair is perfection. The poolside old-school Miami grandmother vibe of her outfit is not.
Her hair is nice for once. Usually it looks so flat and fine.
Hate the dress…but I like that she’s taking chances. I’ll always prefer seeing people wearing something ugly than wearing some dull beige or brown number.
The only person in the industry who dislikes Saoirse Ronan is her stylist, apparently.
Um, I actually like Mary J. Bliges’ outfit??? The colour looks great with her hair and it doesn’t look bad on her overall. She could have dialed up her lippy to a pink or bright red, and I am a bit over the see-through dress trend, but I think she looks pretty nice. The design of her gown is dope.
Octavia Spencer looks lovely although she wears too much black, which is hypocritical of me to say, and Laurie Metcalf’s gown has beautiful colours in it although I am not too sure about the hem or the jagged nature if the bottoms of the sleeves.
Some of these women seem to be aging in reverse — Allison and Holly especially. And I see no obvious work. Amazing.
The Bog Sick is next on my list to watch so I’ll reserve my final opinion on Holly until after that. But for now, with Top of the Lake, I’m kinda over her, lol.
I love Kumail Nanjiani, and I think that pic with Holly Hunter is cute. It’s amazing how little she ages.
It looks like green might be a big color this year on the red carpet and I’m SO excited to see what happens.

No guys, I think she’s a dead ringer for a young Sharon Stone. I actually had to do a double take, I thought it was Sharon before I realized it was Saoirse! With the way Sharon’s been drinking baby unicorn blood lately, it could have been! Lol
Allison Janney is a stone FOX! That woman is so beautiful and mesmerizing to look at.
When I saw Saorise my first reaction was “Wow, she looks gorgeous.” I love the color and the design but I think it doesn’t fit properly or she doesn’t have the right undergarments to make it look smooth. The only other dress I like is the one that Allison Janney is wearing. One word–stunning!!

Allison Janney looks like a goddess here! I love her, and pretty much all the actresses in the running for that category, but I’m rooting for Laurie. She’s such a great performer, and I’d love to see her get this sort of recognition.
Saoirse is lovely, but that dress is not.
Saoirse’s dress doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the lack of a proper undergarment. The bustline is gross without a bra.
