Lady Gaga in Armani at the Grammys: Mother of Dragons or mother monster?

60th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Arrivals

I don’t begrudge Lady Gaga her career reboot, I really don’t. I just don’t get why we have to fall all over ourselves to take this reboot seriously. It’s clear – to me – that if she was still able to get attention by wearing meat dresses and singing dance-hall music, she would be doing that. But she shed that skin when it stopped being profitable, and now she’s this half-country “dive bar” singer with… feminism. Or something. And it’s fine – but why is this version given so much legitimacy? Deep thoughts, I know.

Anyway, Lady Gaga arrived on the Grammy Awards red carpet pretty early, because she was one of the first performers on. She wore this conservative Armani gown and, like, Mother of Dragons hair. The wig was not good and the “string theory” hairstyle was questionable. I also think Gaga needs to stop with high-necked looks, because she really doesn’t have the body/face for it – the higher the neck, the shorter she looks. But it’s fine, whatever.

My biggest problem was how Gaga was scheduled – the Grammys opened with Kendrick Lamar, as they should, and he brought the house down. Then Gaga went second with this pitchy ballad. And it was just kind of weird, tonally.

At the end of her performance, she said “Time’s Up.” And then she lost Best Pop Vocal Performance to Ed Sheeran. That category was four women and Sheeran, and they gave the Grammy to a dude… who wasn’t even there. Ugh.

Totally agree on the high neck, it doesn’t suit Gaga. And the dress looked cheap overall, as the wig.

On another point: I just don’t get the Ed Sheeran appeal.

  2. DesertReal says:

Her look was less Mother of Dragons and more Lady Olenna the Queen of Thorns.

  3. Eiré says:

Oh, you mean he won for his cover of ‘No Scrubs’? The one that he didn’t credit Kandi Burerus and Tameka Harris, for?

  4. fran says:

She looked amazing! I don’t get Ed Sheeran either, but – gender aside – when it comes to sales, radio spinning and all that, the competition was not that good in this category…at least for the EU – i rarely hear many singles from the other artists on loop as much as Sheeran. Not sure in the US.

  5. Laur says:

I’m not a Sheeran fan myself but can see why he won given the amount of publicity he gets in general along with the radio play, he was probably a safe choice… But then I don’t know who the others in the category were either.

ETA just Googled the other nominees and really not surprised he won, that category was weak as.

  6. Millennial says:

I like Ed Sheeran, but then I like pop that is really just Adult Contemporary. And he sells really well so I can see why he won.

Pink, Lady Gaga, etc…. their stuff wasn’t great this year. Kesha really should have won for Praying though.

The wings imagery evoking a giant dead white bird on the piano – i think it’s supposed to be angelic? But it’s a gruesome symbol.

  8. Ozogirl says:

That is some bad makeup. Her performance was okay, but it’s time to move on from Million Reasons.

  9. Tiffany says:

If you had not informed me the was Gaga, I would not have believed you. My goodness, stop it with messing with your face Gaga.

    • Mata says:

I was just thinking that when I saw the picture. She’s had so much work done, I don’t recognize her at all, anymore.

  10. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Lady Gaga doesn’t look like Lady Gaga.

  11. Aerohead21 says:

For her, I though she looked good. I don’t like the skirt over the bodysuit. I think if the skirt were tailored more for her body it would have looked better. Also, the hair minus the corset ties in the back would have been stunning but the corset ties make it look costumey. Also, they didn’t weave the lower part of the braid well because pieces are flipping out all over and it doesn’t look purposeful.

  12. mela says:

    TROUT POUT

her face looks like jessica simpson circa 2009

    • AnneC says:

Also there is a photo of Melania right below her on the home page and they look alike. All this plastic surgery and fillers gives women a certain sameness and plastic uniformity. Not good.

  13. Joannie says:

Her performance was incredible and she looked fantastic. Too bad she didn’t win. IMO she should have.

  14. serena says:

Honestly, she looked fine. High neck and all, her face seems a little botoxed though.

As for the Ed Sheeran win.. of course he did *sigh*

  15. blonde555 says:

Looks like Kim K… meaning they both look like bad barbie plastic.

  16. Tessy says:

Gaga is one who I can never recognize. Her face changes every time I see a picture of her. Nicole Kidman has screwed with her face so much that she’s become unrecognizable too.
