Kylie Jenner criticized for wearing & shilling for those stupid ‘waist trainers’

I remember covering an interview with Jessica Alba many years ago, where she described how she wore a girdle for months after giving birth. This was news to me – I didn’t know that some women could wear a girdle or something less structured following a birth and that it was an actual thing. But it’s a thing. So I wasn’t really surprised when Kylie Jenner posted this photo of herself in a “Waist trainer.” Kylie and all of the Kardashian-Jenner women shill for these dumb waist trainers and it’s just dumb and whatever. Well, Kylie is being criticized only I’m not sure about this Us Weekly article:

Kylie Jenner turned heads earlier this week for posting a photo of herself using a Waist Gang Society waist trainer less than two months after giving birth to daughter Stormi — and some fans weren’t exactly kind about it.

Dr. Cynthia Robbins, a Texas-based OGBYN, spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about 20-year-old Jenner’s bold choice and recommended that the Life of Kylie star avoid wearing the slimming accessory.

“A waist trainer is a very tight garment that can be clinched tighter and tighter to pull in the floating rib and anatomically compress,” she explained to Us. “This is worn higher, does not stabilize the pelvis and I feel puts harmful compression to the abdomen. It has a temporary result that is no different than anything too tight around skin.”

Dr. Robbins suggested that women looking to tone down postpartum opt for a safer alternative such as Belly Bandit wraps. “After the delivery of a baby, the body has had ligaments and cartilage softened by a hormone named Relaxin. This hormone has been produced at the end of pregnancy to allow for structure shifting as the baby moves through the birth canal,” she said. “I advise patients to wear a support wrap or belly wrap postpartum to stabilize the patient’s pelvis so that it is held in place and no longer shifts. This allows for early resumption of exercise and for earlier return to normal function and pre-pregnancy shape. This is a healthy way to quicken recovery.”

[From Us Weekly]

I had to read that a few times to understand what the actual criticism is: this doctor is saying that a “waist trainer” isn’t really doing much good for a postpartum body because it sits too “high.” The doctor is recommending other girdle-like devices which will actually “suck in/compress” her entire midsection and pelvis. Fair enough. But is there any space to have a conversation about not wanting to wear any kind of girdle at all when you’re postpartum?

I found that with everything held in tight afterwards for several hours a day, I felt a lot more stable and comfortable while it was on. It wrapped from ribs to just below my hip bones, and was the same one they give to c section patients. I had separated ab muscles (diastasis recti) and then they were held in, it was LOADS more pleasant to walk around. Only for a few weeks though, then I naturally kind of abandoned it.

    Whatever makes you comfortable.

    • Mel M says:

Yeah I didn’t wear one after my first because she was a natural birth and I had no idea there were such things. After my second who was an emergency c section they gave my that big white griddle/wrap thing and it was a life saver. Holding everything in afterwards makes you feel so much better and not as scared to sneeze or cough. I got another one after my twins c section and bought one that had a snap crotch that I think I wore for like a year afterwards I loved it so much.

    • Bridget says:

But that is hugely different than what Kylie is talking about here. A postpartum support belt is not the same thing as a waist trainer.

      • Jussie says:

My doctor suggested a popular waist trainer because it was about half the price of the one marketed as a medical item that she thought was suited to my needs.

I bought them both. They’re the exact same thing bar the colour choices. Same material, same design etc.

      • Mel M says:

I understand that and I wasn’t saying they are. I was just giving Wiffie my experience with the wrap that they give you after c sections, the same one she wore.

      • Bridget says:

        @Mel: I wasn’t replying to you 🙂

@Jussie that’s interesting, though I will also point out that they are used differently as a waist trainer and I think it’s an important distinction.

      • jwoolman says:

Kylie has so much money but so little solid medical advice. And yes, this is not post-partum support. She’s peddling a higher waist trainer to the young girls who for some god only knows reason admire her.

  2. Anastasia says:

Yeah, I didn’t wear anything around my belly after giving birth (granted, this was in 1994). My doctor told me the uterus will return to its normal size and not to worry about it. And it did.

But of course these are Kardashians we’re talking about.

  3. littlemissnaughty says:

I’ve seen some youtube moms wear and recommend a Belly Bandit and when you look at the thing and how it’s worn, you can immediately see what this doc is talking about. This is a glorified corset. The other one is, in fact, a support garment. But by all means, moms, have a damn belly if you don’t feel like wearing anything tight. I’m not pregnant or post-anything and sitting at my desk in jeans feels like a challenge today.

Are people now taking actual photographs and selfies with all of those crazy ‘beauty filters’ turned on?

The filters that make your jaw rounder, eyes further apart, lips fuller, nose smaller and skin texture smoother? Those things are so addictive to the narcissistic and/or insecure set I bet. It’s not the app of old that would just disappear a pimple, these are new ones that essentially fix your crooked nose and beady eyes. Lol

Once you do it, I bet you cant ever even go back to your REAL face. Lol

If you’re plain they make you pretty, if you’re already decent looking they make you beautiful, and if you’re beautiful they make you other worldly beautiful…

I’m trying to imagine what somebody like Angelina would like with that thing on…

I found it sad that Kim K already started her infant daughter out on beauty filters. Like the baby wasn’t cute enough or something and so she had to make her eyes bigger and lips bigger and baby skin even more smooth. Wtf?! Kinda sad.

    • psl says:

Every single person in that family is just vile. They are sick in the head. I will never ever ever be able to understand how some people admire/respect them. Not one redeemable quality in ANY of them.

    • nb says:

I’ve noticed a facebook trend of women using those as their profile photos. The stupid ones with the little ears and fake animal noses, or the flower crowns, or the little hearts. These are grown ass women in their 20’s/30’s and even 40’s. Yeah the filter does make you look more attractive but seriously, everyone knows you don’t really look like that! I honestly don’t even know why it irks me so much, but it does.

I don’t selfie too often but when I do I make sure to turn OFF the ‘beauty filter’ option. I hate the look of the overly smooth skin and the unnaturalness of it all. I’m 33. I have some character to my face and I don’t care if people see it.

      • psl says:

Those filters are SO LAME! The animal ones.
And what’s the point of a selfie if it isn’t you?

      • Argonaut says:

it’s not that deep. they’re just having fun online.

      • otaku fairy says:

        @Argonaut: Why aren’t you outraged?!?!?!!!!!!!
Just kidding. I agree with you, and will save the rage for when they do things that actually ‘make the world worse’ (which they sometimes do).

  5. Linda says:

Hope people don’t fall for this waste of money. She is starting to look more plastic and artificial again. Right after birth pictures she was looking a little more natural.

    • psl says:

Go to their IG pages. People believe them. It is so sad to see how many stupid people there are out there.

  6. TyrantDestroyed says:

Meh since November when I gave birth I use two kind of girdles made for post partum recovery. Honestly I felt better support after giving birth so no shade from me.

    • Bridget says:

This isn’t the same thing at all. It’s not a postpartum support belt it’s a corset.

      • Jussie says:

Waist trainers aren’t corsets, not even close. They’re barely even comparable to cheap fashion ‘corsets’. They’re a small step up from wearing a pair of Spanx one size too small.

  7. Carol says:

For petes sake, are we really going back to the corset?? I’m 1000% over this kinda thing – this pressure for women to look perfect 24/7

  8. HK9 says:

Every couple of weeks I get someone on IG wanting to sell these waist trainers and I tell them to get stuffed every time. The girdles that some women use after pregnancy are for gentle/medium support-there’s no “training” involved. They want you to put this waist training shit on while you’re working out, and if you’re working out you don’t need to train your waist you just need to do the workout. It’s a waste of time and money.

  9. Kitten says:

Little Big Ang is back, I see.

  10. Sarah says:

Kris and Bruce Jenner really did a number on their kids. I have no idea how Robert Kardashian was as a father, so I won’t presume…but we know for sure he didn’t live long enough to be a lasting help to his daughters. Very disturbing that this sort of bizarrely egocentric and shallow behavior is getting normalized today.

    • Rachel in August says:

Do you see any life or personality behind those eyes? Any intelligence? Nah … I don’t either. The lips are starting to look like over-cooked hot dog wieners, lol. Just a comedy show now.

  11. Bridget says:

It’s stuff like this that makes me think that Kylie’s not the lip kit empress they’re trying to sell her as. A sponsored post for a waist trainer is SO TACKY. It’s the kind of thing you do when you really need cash.

    • Noely says:

That’s a good point. She’s supposedly making millions from her cosmetics. Yet she’s shilling tacky stuff like that. Is her beauty line really SUCH a huge deal like the media is trying to make people believe?

    • nb says:

I honestly think she’ll just sign up for anything that brings in money. The Kardashians/Jenners don’t care how they make the money or what they’re shilling, they just want the payout and they always want more. Hair vitamins, Fit Tea, waist trainers, cosmetics, clothing, apps, emojis….whatever they can get paid for they’ll shill. Even if she’s making millions a year just think about how much money she spends on her lifestyle. Mansions, renovations, cars, vacations, travel, private jets, jewelry, clothes, shoes, purses…. she’s expected to maintain a certain lifestyle/brand at this point and that stuff ain’t cheap.

  12. Riotgrrr1 says:

I wore a post pregnancy wrap but it went from hips to rib cage and it did make me feel better and more supported. It also wasn’t super tight like a waiste trainer.

  13. JA says:

It’s actually helpful for new mothers to wear these. The stomach muscles are basically non existent after birth so it’s helpful for the core as you slowly heal. Now it won’t give you six pack abs but it will assist in building your core strength back when you’re able to exercise. Your uterus will go back to its original size on it’s own but your abs won’t

    • Bridget says:

A support girdle doesn’t assist you in gaining core strength (and can in fact do the opposite). You’re using something external to provide support for your body, and it can actually contribute to greater weakening of core strength because your core is intended to be used.

      • Yathink says:

I can’t understand how anyone thinks it will assist in strengthening anything. It very specifically means you don’t use your muscles as much as you would without one. Yes post partum bands can be helpful for comfort but no Dr or maternal nurse suggests that they’ll strengthen anything.

  14. Lindy says:

I’m about three weeks away from delivering my second and as an older mom I’ve struggled more this pregnancy with hip and lower back pain, despite working to keep my core strong. My obgyn recommended two types of postpartum wraps and said they can help with pain and soreness after birth, but to be sure not to wear them 100% of the time so that you can force the core muscles to do some work on their own as they recover. The things she suggested look nothing like this waist trainer, though.

  15. Michelle says:

Is there anything this family won’t try to make money from? No matter if it influences the nxt Generation of dumbasses following them on Instagram. The amount of girls who look up to them is heartbreaking.

  16. Jag says:

Wearing something stable can help the woman recover faster from pregnancy, especially with helping the uterus shrink. It’s done in Europe on the regular; just the U.S. is very behind in such things. (Like also behind in not using midwives regularly and circumcising when it’s not necessary, too.) There’s a specific type of massage to do that can also help with recovery.

The waist trainer does sit too high, and I agree with the doctor. I thought that the opposite would be said, so it’s good to see a U.S. doctor actually up on the information. (You wouldn’t believe how many bad doctors I’ve seen here in the last 30 years.)

  17. LittlefishMom says:

I don’t see the problem? If you want to wear one, wear it. If not, don’t. How is she to blame?

  18. momoffour says:

I had four kids and never wore anything li like that. If it’s for comfort or health reasons, great. If it’s because you don’t want to look bigger, I just don’t get it. When I had a baby, I knew I’d just had a baby. It will all go back but why feel like it has to immediately? That’s a horrible pressure to put on a woman in a time of great emotional vulnerability.

  19. mela says:

her lips are drooping so MUCH. she’s got that 2008 restalyne trout pout

  20. Raina says:

I used a Belly Bandit after my c-section, and it helped SO much with the discomfort and muscle weakness as I recovered. I would take it off to shower and there was a noticeable difference in back pain and core strength. I’d recommend an abdominal wrap to anyone recovering from a c-section. A girdle, however, is a different story.
