Tyra Banks admits nose job: ‘I had bones in my nose that were growing & itching’

NBC's 'America's Got Talent' Season 12 Finale Week
Tyra Banks has a new memoir coming out, it’s co-written with her mother and is called Perfect is Boring: 10 Things My Crazy, Fierce Mama Taught Me About Beauty, Booty, and Being a Boss. To promote it she talked to People Magazine, and her quotes come off as preachy. It’s all about Tyra’s choices and how women are judgmental, but she’s not or something. It sounds rich coming from Tyra, but she’s never been particularly self aware. Here’s some of what she said, which focuses on the work women do to look beautiful.

“Natural beauty is unfair,” Banks —who with her mother has written a new memoir, Perfect Is Boring — tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue, on stands Friday. “I get really uncomfortable when women who are these natural beauties judge anybody who does anything to themselves.”

In her book, Banks reveals that she got a nose job early in her career. “I had bones in my nose that were growing and itching,” says Banks, 44. “I could breathe fine, but I added cosmetic surgery. I admit it! Fake hair, and I did my nose. I feel I have a responsibility to tell the truth.”

And when it comes to praising the “no makeup” look, Banks isn’t necessarily a fan. “We place a lot of emphasis on that,” she says. “As a model, I needed makeup. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It leveled my playing field. Gisele, you don’t need it? I do! And we’re both modeling for Victoria’s Secret.

And when it comes to her message, “If you like your natural self, don’t worry about it,” she says. “But if you feel insecure about something … I have a magic bag of beauty tricks to make you who you want to be. Permanent or temporary, I do not judge that.”

Ultimately, Banks (who says she hasn’t done any “age stuff” yet) says she wants to incite a more honest conversation about looks.

“Fix it or flaunt it — I think women should be able to do both,” she says. “There is a boundary line, either you’re super natural or you live at the plastic surgeon. It’s okay to hop back and forth over that line. You want a hair weave? Fine. You want permanent eyebrows? Fine. We as women need to stop judging.”

[From People]

I agree with her about makeup as I am a makeup person and don’t feel like myself without it. As for noses that can grow and itch, I’ve never heard anything like that so I googled it and all the results were about sinusitis and sinus pressure. That could have been the case with Tyra, but if she fixed her nose for cosmetic purposes why doesn’t she just own up to that? She gave this whole spiel about not judging women’s beauty choices, but then offered a questionable medical reason for her own plastic surgery.

People has another segment of their Tyra interview where she talks about her 30 pound weight loss. It’s typical Tyra in that she says she doesn’t care what people think and that she lost weight for herself. She also said that she pigs out on ice cream when she’s with her mom. I really like that she’s close with her mom. I could relate to that.

If she were really about the truth she would save that BS story about bones in her nose growing and itching and just said she didn’t like her original nose 🤷🏾‍♀️

    • Eliza says:

Its the new deviated septum excuse. Of course people may need surgery for it, but not complete reconstruction.

      • Nancy says:

Lol Eliza, that was my first thought as well. There sure are a lot of deviated septums in Hollywood!

      • FLORC says:

Lol it’s where my thoughts went as well!

I knew a girl that wanted a nose job and went doctor shopping until 1 said she had a deviated septum. Then she explained she had a nose job so she could breathe better.
Its dishonest and I’ll roll my eyes, but their choice.

      • Shannon says:

I have a deviated septum, and it’s pretty miserable tbh. I don’t like the idea of having surgery unless it’s life-saving (I get creeped out), so I’ve never really approached the idea. BUT if I wasn’t as squeamish as I am about surgery, was rich, and I had the money and didn’t like my nose either (a deviated septum can make them look kind of weird – my nose is a little crooked) I could see killing two birds with one stone. Why not? As for a lot of them in Hollywood, I wouldn’t know, but I know there are a ton in my family lol. It’s genetic.

      • Katya says:

To be fair though, she did say she did it for medical reasons primarily but decided to do the cosmetic stuff at the same time. I have a deviated septum and get congested easily, and if I ever got surgery for it, I think I’d be tempted to say “just straighten that thing out while you’re in there.” but it doesn’t bother me enough to just do it on its own.

      • Sojaschnitzel says:

Well I just had my operation for a deviated septum and from the outside, my nose is as crooked and ugly as before. 😀

      • imqrious2 says:

Eh, I had a deviated septum. I wasn’t offered a nose job for it; the dr. just fixed it INSIDE. You get a nose job for that because you WANT one.

      • Leen says:

Ehhh I don’t shade her for that. She did say she added the cosmetic part because she wanted it to. And plus a lot of doctors just ask if you want your nose cosmetically straightened too when you have surgery for DNS. I had the surgery for my DNS (awful I also had inflamed sinuses – my nose was a mess), the doctor asked if I wanted to also straighten my nose cosmetically and I said no, cause I actually like my nose! But a friend of mine had the same problem as me and she got a nose job along with it (apparently it’s super easy to combine both surgeries). I knew she was incredibly insecure about her nose (my friend). Didn’t care, just like I don’t shade Tyra for it.

    • Shotcaller says:

I’m having septoplastyin the fall and I begged my surgeon not to change my nose. Like, with tears in my eyes. He assured me that rhinoplasty is a completely different, intentional procedure. Tyra, please stop.

      • Pandora says:

My brother had septoplasty after which the tip of his nose collapsed. He used to have a very cute nose and now it looks deflated. He hasn’t had reconstructive surgery afterward because he can’t afford it and is very self conscious about it. I hope your Doc will do a great job, though nose shape can obviously change after septoplasty.

      • Shotcaller says:

        Oh. My. God.

    • Heather says:

Oh my god, she must be the only woman in history who can feel her bones growing. Celebrities, they are not like us, lol!

      • FLORC says:

No it is real. And can be extremely painful. Think growth spurts plus sinus pressure.
Sinus pressure can be an annoyance to unbearable. And bone growth can be an annoyance to extremely painful. I remember during my growth spurt my shins and thighs would hurt and itch, but there’s no way to alleviate the pain so I’d lose sleep.

What Tyra did was probably gone to a doctor that wrote a plausible condition down for insurance and document reasons. The practice is common.

      • Leen says:

@FLORC – probably that’s exactly what happened. When I went to do my DNS surgery, doctor asked if I wanted my nose cosmetically done too since it would cost me literally 10 dollars with insurance, but if I did it later in life it would cost way more than this.

    • Lama Bean says:

Tyra, girl bye. This is nothing new. The substantial difference between your old nose and your new nose is wayyyyy beyond “some bones itching.” It was 20-30 years ago. Just own it. Awfully disingenuous considering you had a whole ass show judging people and their appearance.

    • Tonya says:

      thank you

    • kimbers says:

it wasn’t a secret if you saw her pics of before she modeled.

      • psl says:

Right? I don’t know why anyone bothers denying they had work done….like we can’t see in older pics? My favorite though is when a fan says it is due to “aging”. Please, my face looks the same as it did 20 years ago – a little older, but the same. So just STOP LYING *cough* FergieAllTheKardashian/Jenners/OliviaMunnKateWinslset*cough*

    • reverie says:

Did no one read the part where she said that she added the cosmetic aspect to her nose surgery?

      • Milo says:

No cause then there wouldn’t be anything to bitch about. I guess selective hearing now applies to reading as well.

      • Ms says:

Seriously, reading these comments I was like…. What did I misread? Nope, it wasn’t me. She clearly stated she added cosmetic surgery, in so many words.

    • Anastasia says:

Uh, yeah, my husband had a deviated septum (bad–90% blocked on one side). The surgical repair for that didn’t change anything about the external look of his nose. Total BS with her.

  2. Hazel says:

You’re still growing & adding bone up to your early 20s, but not in the nose. Your nose is done by then.

    • Veronica says:

Cartilage will continue to grow slightly longer than bone, but from what I understand, the “enlargement” of ears and noses has to do with the sagging of the cartilage due to aging and, well, decades of gravity. I mean, I think she’s full of shit, don’t get me wrong, but I always thought that was a pretty interesting fact about our anatomy. (Just say you wanted a nose job! Nobody cares!)

    • Girl_ninja says:

Our noses and ears don’t stop growing. I’m not sure about feeling bones growing, but our nose never stop growing.

  3. Lala says:

If she had bones growing and itching in her nose…then she’s a mutant…since it’s obvious that she’s not…I’m ashamed for her that she used that reason to state the obvious…

  4. Erinn says:

“I could breathe fine, but I added cosmetic surgery.”

I mean – she is technically admitting to it. She had no real immediate medical need to get it done – her breathing was fine. It’s possible that she was still uncomfortable with sinus pressure. But she IS saying that she definitely went for a ‘better’ looking nose and didn’t really need the surgery.

  5. Renee2 says:

Her broad, wide, “Jackson 5” nose would have hampered her modelling ambitions.

She looks ROUGH in the first two pictures. She’s an attractive woman but that hair color does not look awesome on her.

  6. aenflex says:

The only bomes in the nose are up high, between the eyes, nowhere near the bottom where she had her cosmetic surgery.

  7. Chaine says:

Honestly did she have more work done on it recently? It looks smaller and more pinched, more obvious to me that it’s cosmetically altered. Or does aging change now a nose job looks?

  8. HK9 says:

She should have googled anatomy of the face before she came up with that lame ass excuse. Nothing in your face is growing & itching at that age. Just say I got a nose job to make my face more commercial (ahem-white) for my career. There-I fixed it for her.

  9. Heather says:

I really hate the small nose phase of history. Tyra is a successful model because of her figure and her smize.

I look forward to the next generation of models showing off their flat, wide noses or their long narrow noses with bumps and hooks and all the rest. Real noses look better in every single case unless you’ve crashed your moped into a brick wall and actually need a reconstruction.

    • reverie says:

I totally agree! All these little teeny tiny noses just look… off.

    • Anastasia says:

YES! And let’s let flat narrow asses come back, too! (Like mine, LOL!)

      • Pandy says:

Amen to the flat ass comeback lolllllll. Wonder if she had a coke problem and then a nose collapse?

    • Tata Mata says:

We need more diversity in the looks department in media. Noses, lips, chins, tits, asses, botox and fillers … nowadays they all look the same and have no mime.

  10. psl says:

Oh, shut UP. She has had at least TWO nose jobs, and not for that lame ass excuse.

    Please.

  11. hey-ya says:

…I follow Tyra on ig….but LoOk at her…to ask her to justify a nose job is beyond ludicrous…btw hasnt antm made her into a billionaire yet?….

  12. Tessa says:

There are no bones in noses.

    • NeoCleo says:

Yes, there are. There is a crest of bone that forms the bridge of your nose and along the sides. The rest is cartilage and it is all covered with skin. Plastic surgeons open the nose, file down the bone and cut back the cartilage to reshape the nose. I had my own done 20 years ago because it listed decidedly to the left. I’ve never regretted doing it.

  13. NeoCleo says:

FAKE HAIR, don’t care!! Honestly, a person has the right to do whatever they want to their own body. I don’t always understand it, i.e., tattoos, body piercing or especially those weird implants you sometimes see, but it’s ultimately none of my business.

  14. Peter says:

Tyra has always been a first rate narcissist and bullshitter.
Remember her ‘degree’ from Harvard Business School.

    • Tata Mata says:

There are several celebrities and actors / actresses who have a “degree” from Harvard. But if you name them and mock them for being so hungry for a academic title of questionable academic value then you will be …

  15. Tata Mata says:

    Dear Ms Banks

if you want to have a nose job – just have it. You don’t have to excuse for that nor do you have to explain it to anybody. It is your nose and your body and it is a free country (still).
    You look fine.

    Best wishes

  16. perplexed says:

I thought she admitted she got the nose job for cosmetic reasons. She said she could breathe just fine, and said she got the nose job for cosmetic purposes.

  17. Tyra, get over it, stop bullshitting.

  18. KLO says:

I thought everyone knew more than 20 years ago. I read about it in the 90s in an article about celebrity nose jobs.

  19. Bridget says:

Does anyone NOT get a nose job if they want to model or act?

  20. coffeeisgood says:

Most models do get nose jobs (Gisele, Bella Hadid..) just own up to it. I would respect celebrities who get plastic surgery so much more if they would just be honest about it.

    • LK says:

But GB didn’t get a nose job. You think celebs should ‘own up to it’ just because you read an article about celeb nose jobs? (Like that reader who said she thought everyone knew about Tyra’s nose job because she read an article about it, but this is the first time that Tyra talks about it.)
      Bella? Yes. I agree.

  21. K says:

With the big hair and the stiff arms she looks like a Barbie doll.

  22. KH says:

This is HYSTERICAL!!!!! Tyra was #1 to call people out on being fake and talked mad sh*t on her top model show to girls who did and didn’t want to change their face… like the girl with the gap in her front teeth!! she insisted on her getting that fixed!!!! what a joker!! sit down tyra, you’re a liar
