Robert Mueller will wrap up his investigation into obstruction in the coming weeks

It’s Friday the 13th. Prepare yourselves for a massacre, in every sense of the word. I’ve been feeling all week that THIS is the week that Trump tries to fire someone important, whether it be treasonous hobgoblin Jeff Sessions, or Rod Rosenstein, or maybe even Bob Mueller. If my gut is right and past is prologue, that means Trump will fire someone late in the afternoon and then hop on Air Force One and fly down to Mar-a-Lago as Washington descends into chaos. One of the reasons why everything is coming to a head this week? Because the FBI raided Michael Cohen, which led to Trump’s lawyers withdrawing their offer to allow Mueller’s team to interview Trump. Which led to this:

Prior to Monday’s raid, Mueller’s team had been aiming to finalize a report on its findings on whether the president has tried to obstruct justice in the Russia investigation in the coming months, as early as May or as late as July, three sources said. That timeline hinged in part on reaching a decision on a presidential interview, these people said. One person familiar with the investigation described a decision on an interview as one of the last steps Mueller was seeking to take before closing his investigation into obstruction.

Now, according to two sources, Mueller’s team may be able to close the obstruction probe more quickly as they will not need to prepare for the interview or follow up on what the president says.

The raid on Cohen “significantly complicated” any negotiations for the president’s legal team, according to a person familiar with the discussions, who also cautioned that “you never say never” in terms of a possible interview. This person said the president’s legal team is still in frequent contact with Mueller’s team on other issues related to the investigation.

Three sources familiar with the investigation said the findings Mueller has collected on Trump’s attempts to obstruct justice include: His intent to fire former FBI Director James Comey; his role in the crafting of a misleading public statement on the nature of a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son and Russians; Trump’s dangling of pardons before grand jury witnesses who might testify against him; and pressuring Attorney General Jeff Sessions not to recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

Mueller would then likely send a confidential report to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing the Russia investigation. Rosenstein could decide whether to make the report public and send its findings to Congress. From there, Congress would then decide whether to begin impeachment proceedings against the president, said two of the sources.

[From NBC News]

Basically, Mueller is going to be making some huge moves in the next, say, six weeks? And it will be super-depressing if Mueller sends his report to Rosenstein and that’s the end of it. Of course, I doubt that will happen. There are more arrests to come. And I’ve started to convince myself that Rosenstein is the one who will be fired today.

As for the raid on Michael Cohen’s home, office and hotel room? Well, guess who kept incriminating tapes of many of his conversations?

President Trump’s personal attorney Michael D. Cohen sometimes taped conversations with associates, according to three people familiar with his practice, and allies of the president are worried that the recordings were seized by federal investigators in a raid of Cohen’s office and residences this week. Cohen, who served for a decade as a lawyer at the Trump Organization and is a close confidant of Trump, was known to store the conversations using digital files and then replay them for colleagues, according to people who have interacted with him.

“We heard he had some proclivity to make tapes,” said one Trump adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. “Now we are wondering, who did he tape? Did he store those someplace where they were actually seized? . . . Did they find his recordings?”

On Monday, FBI agents seized Cohen’s computers and phones as they executed a search warrant that sought, among other records, all communications between the lawyer and Trump and campaign aides about “potential sources of negative publicity” in the lead-up to the 2016 election, The Washington Post reported. Investigators were also looking for any records related to adult-film star Stormy Daniels and ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal, who both received payments after alleged affairs with Trump.

It is unknown whether Cohen taped conversations between himself and Trump. But two people familiar with Cohen’s practices said he recorded both business and political conversations. One associate said Trump knew of Cohen’s practice because the attorney would often play him recordings Cohen had made of his conversations with other top Trump advisers.

“It was his standard practice to do it,” this person said.

[From Washington Post]

Keep in mind that the Cohen raid was not conducted by Mueller’s team. Mueller’s team made a referral to New York’s federal Southern district, and they’re the ones investigating. Of course, they can and will share information with Mueller. As I said, there’s going to be a lot happening in the coming weeks and months.

I’m hoping for the best. But preparing for the worst.

And besides Trump, there is no one I want to see go down more than Don Jr.

    • RBC says:

The quick/fairly quiet divorce between Don Jr and his wife make me think he is the first Trump family member to face charges. Don Jr is getting his house in order for when the crap hits the fan.
Next up would be Jared Kushner. He has been very low key lately. Something is going on there as well

      • Becks says:

I think I want to see Jared go down more than Don Jr. Don Jr is slimy and dirty but at least he’s not at every single White House meeting. I want to see that smug look wiped off Jared’s face.

I have an unreasonable dislike of JK lol. Maybe not unreasonable. But its strong.

      • Still_Sarah says:

I literally wake up every morning now and say “who has Trump fired today?” as I reach for my iPhone to check the CNN website for news.

      • Esmom says:

Becks, Both guys are reprehensible but Don Jr infuriates me more because of his nasty, petty tweeting. Kushner at least hasn’t tried to “own the libz” like Don Jr tries to do. He truly makes my blood boil.

      • HannahF says:

I dislike both of them but I do think that Kushner has resting smug face as he has that (awful) look in every photo I’ve ever seen–old and new. With respect to Junior, his a**holic tweets are horrible but I’m more bothered by his enjoyment in killing defenseless animals

    • Nicole says:

I’m prepared for the worst and not holding my breath for anything else. *sigh*

      • Cynical Ann says:

I’m with you. It will be a pleasant surprise if something with actual consequences happens with Trump (i.e. forced to resign/faces charges) but I am not holding my breath.

    • aang says:

I don’t see this going anywhere. Not the collusion part anyway. The laws seem too vague. But if it were a democrat you know they’d be calling for a firing squad for the traitors. Hopefully some financial thing will at least come out of this and help in November and we can limp through with gridlock until 2020. And they can stop anymore evil, incompetent judges from being seated.

    • Lightpurple says:

While I will enjoy the perp walk of Junior, Jared, Eric and possibly Eric’s wife Lara, I am really looking forward to Princess Nagini’s walk of shame.

      • insertpunhere says:

I don’t think we’re going to see a perp walk with Princess Nagini. I think she’s learned well from her father, and my guess is that if it comes down to it, she will betray anyone and everyone to keep herself out of prison. With the stakes this high, I’m guessing the deal to bring everyone down would be pretty sweet, and I’m also guessing that she has the information to do it. Just a hunch.

      • jetlagged says:

If it is accompanied by cries of “lock her up, lock her up” it will be sublime and the sounds of champagne corks popping will be heard in the jetlagged household.

    • Merritt says:

I want to be optimistic but there have been so many let downs.

    • Millennial says:

Me too. My gut feeling tells me Russia helped get Trump elected, but there’s likely no hard evidence Trump knew about it (even if he did).

I absolutely believe Trump has laundered money for the Russians, and theres likely hard evidence of that, but I’m not sure Mueller was able to put together a quid pro quo money for election/influence scenario.

      A girl can dream though.

    • Veronica T says:

Don Jr., and Sean Hannity topped a list I saw on the “most punchable faces.” I must say, I concur 100%!!!

    • Lilly says:

I really, really dislike #PresidentMiller and he keeps flying under the legal radar and I hope he’ll be wrapped up in this investigation.

  2. grabbyhands says:

I think I’m going to avoid news for a while, as much as I am able. Every time it seems like we’re finally on the verge of him finally having to face consequences, it all falls apart miserably, so I don’t want to get my hopes up for nothing.

    • Maya says:

I am joining you – not going to read the news for a while. Not good for my blood pressure…

    • indefatigable says:

Even if there is something someone will probably pull an Oliver North and take one for the team.

  3. Beluga says:

So is this just for the obstruction of justice? The collusion investigation will presumably continue.

    • Becks says:

Yes, that’s my guess. and obstruction is the easy part, since Trump has admitted as much – via tweet, Lester Hold, etc.

      • Beluga says:

Exactly, it’s relatively easy to prove. The collusion goes far deeper and wider than Watergate and that investigation took years.

      • ORIGINAL T.C. says:

        Thanks @Becks

I was so confused lad night. MSNBC said Muller was done since Trump will not testify. Then CNN reported that Trump and his lawyers are still negotiating with Muller! So I was tying to find out which network got their facts wrong. Two hours later CNN started repeating what MSNBC as saying. I feel like the reporters themselves didn’t understand the distinction to clarify it to the public.

    • Lightpurple says:

Can we stop using the words Republicans want us to use? Nobody will ever be charged with “collusion;” it isn’t a crime. They are being investigated for election tampering, fraud, money-laundering, espionage, conspiracy to commit crimes against the US.

  4. lightpurple says:

Lordy, I hope there are tapes!

    • Christin says:

      This is Watergate on steroids.

    • Swack says:

If there are tapes and he is playing them for others is he not breaking a client/lawyer priviledge?

      • AMA1977 says:

It’s only a privileged conversation if it takes place privately between an attorney and their client so a conversation with an attorney, the client, and any other person is not privileged, and a conversation with an attorney and someone who they are not representing is not privileged. Also, any conversation between an attorney and their client where the attorney participates in the commission of a crime is not privileged.

I would imagine that the bulk of Cohen’s recorded conversations are not privileged, as he was using them for leverage/intimidation. An attorney can be disbarred for releasing privileged information, so he wouldn’t have been able to share privileged conversation with any other party without being penalized. Sleazy, scummy, mob tactics.

    • isabelle says:

There are tapes, FBI seized voice “tapes” from Cohens computer when they sieged evidence. Apparently he tapes conversations.

  5. Becks says:

I wonder if this is why Paul Ryan announced his resignation this week. He doesn’t want anything to do with whatever is about to come down, and even if he is still Speaker, he will spin it as “we will leave it for the voters and November” (unless of course the Dems retake the House, then they’ll move very quickly in November and December.)

    • HelloSunshine says:

This was what I was thinking as well. I think Ryan knows somethings about to go down and he doesn’t want to be associated with it.

      • Lorelei says:

Ha, too bad for Ryan if he thinks he can walk off unscathed. He is inextricably linked to Trump and he will be remembered only for all of his spineless behavior over the past year and a half+.
His legacy is not going to be a good one no matter where he is when all of this finally reaches its breaking point.

      • Christin says:

Why Ryan chose to announce retirement right now only makes sense if he believes something big is days or weeks away. Supposedly he’s the party’s cash cow (apologies to cows).

I hope the report is both made public and sent to Congress. If only the latter happens, the do-nothings in “leadership” right now could just shelve it until after the mid-terms. The people have a right to know.

      • magnoliarose says:

He knows Nunes is going to flame out and so are others in the House so he is in self-preservation mode and will bail. He doesn’t want any part of what is going to take place, and he has sidestepped his responsibilities to distance himself. I think he made no decisions so that they aren’t on the record and attached to his name.

      • Lightpurple says:

I actually suspect Ryan’s timing is tied more to filing deadlines for a campaign. Anyone running for his seat in WI will have to announce soon and have registration paperwork ready. That takes time to prepare. My rep here in MA has had people out collecting registration signatures for months because it takes time to get the necessary amount to be on the ballot

      • holly hobby says:

He could do us all a favor and remove that treason weasel, Devine (on purpose) Numbnuts from the Intelligence Committee on his way out.

  6. SM says:

    Isn’t it impeachment time already?! I can’t wait….

  7. magnoliarose says:

I am not convinced that a significant firing is going to happen today. Not that it couldn’t, but this news that the case is going to wrap up soon might have stopped his lunacy for now. He also wants the public to pay attention to the fleet sailing for Syria, so I don’t know.
It would be unfortunate optics on his part, but he isn’t concerned about that much anyway, so it is impossible to predict.

    • isabelle says:

Yeah MSNBC is saying the same thing but Cheeto head talks sh** all the time, who the heck knows at this point? Trump doesn’t even know what he is going to do from day to day, he isn’t smart enough to think longterm, he does things in the moment. Pea brain would be stupid enough to do it the day before it closes.

  9. isadora says:

It’s unreasonable to think that everyone will be incriminated by the findings of Mueller but i want the entire GOP gone but also that president Baboonhead, the rest of his family of miserables and snake administration gone in shame and buried in a pit where no sun doesn’t shine.

I’m not an American but i feel the same outrage as the people who have to live each and every day with these idiots in charge. My heart is with you all.

  10. Bliss 51 says:

Someone help me understand, so the investigation on obstruction will wrap soon but does that mean Mueller is not through with his investigation on other matters involving He Who Was Elected Through Ten Years of Gerrymandering by GOP?

    • isabelle says:

He has turned over a lot of stuff over to NY officials because of Cohen. So even after Muller ends his investigation, NY will still be carrying one over.

  11. Nina says:

The problem is that even if something comes of this (and that is a BIG if), despite how satisfying it would be to see Trump go down, the administration is packed with loathsome people and we’d be stuck with Pence — someone I think Republicans and right leaning independents have a much easier time getting behind. With him sliding into the Presidency if Trump somehow gets booted, I think we are looking at 8 more years of this administration.

    • holly hobby says:

I read on Twitter that Pence may have been implicated on something. He was chair of the transition team. Don’t tell me he is innocent.

As for the non interview issue. A few former USA’s provide free legal analysis on Twitter which I found very insightful. They all said you don’t need a suspect’s cooperation for an interview in order to move a case. You can go ahead and charge him without that interview. Anyway a few think that Mueller laid a trap on that Orange clown. His refusal to sit down for an interview is a sign that he is guilty. I can’t really explain it but if you are on Twitter follow Jill Wine-Banks (she was on the Watergate investigative team) and Renato Mariotti. They do these long tweets and it’s broken down in layman’s terms.

  12. holly hobby says:

That jackass has been reassuring those GOP bums in Congress that he will not fire Mueller so that means he’s going to go for his boss (Rosenstein). Like my mom used to say, I know what you’re up to if you lift your tail. Orangino’s motives are so transparent. Congress what are you going to do about this?

I want Mueller to play beat the clock. I hope he levels those charges.

  13. isabelle says:

Actually think there will be nothing against Trump except maybe obstruction of Justice. His big mouth is probably why he is in trouble if in trouble at all. Even if he is found guilty of something, Republicans won’t do one single thing. Instead of waiting patiently for Donald to not probably be charged, volunteer to get out these Republicans in November. Boot them out because they are the ones giving Trump his power. They are the stink in this pile of poo.

  14. why? says:

Mueller needs to stop coddling the Dotard and charge him, his son and daughter, and Jared. The Dotard and his family are so confident that they won’t ever be held accountable for their actions that brag about their crimes

What does Mueller plan on doing about Nunes? I don’t understand why he hasn’t charged Nunes or brought him in for questioning when Nunes was in those same meetings with Flynn and is constantly doing things to obstruct the investigation. Get ready for Nunes newest attack. He made Wray and Rosenstein show him a copy of the paperwork that started the Russian investigation and unclassify names and information in that document. Why do Wray and Rosenstein keep giving into to Nunes, especially when Nunes keeps ignoring their request for documents? Does he have something on them?

  15. why? says:

I wish the press would start calling out Gowdy for being two-faced. He tells the Dotard not to fire Mueller and then he goes on the attack against Rosenstein for hiring Mueller within that same week. The press falls for it all the time. Why? Gowdy is just as corrupt as the Dotard. Mueller needs to stop playing around and start charging republicans like Nunes, Gowdy, Graham, Grassley, Jim Jordan, and Matt G.

It is also being reported that that the puppet Micheal H, who recommended firing McCabe, is also about to come out. Mueller’s case is falling apart because he is coddling the Dotard and has allowed the Dotard and WH to bully McCabe, Comey, Rosenstein, and anyone who Comey told about his conversations with the Dotard into to silence.

  16. LizLem says:

You were right, Kaiser, almost down to the hour. The Justice Department just announced Cohen is under criminal investigation.

  17. why? says:

No wonder the WH, Dotard, and republicans have been in a state of panic and attacking Comey and Rosenstein and trying to distract by pardoning Scooter L and releasing the IG’s biased recommendation on why McCabe was fired. McCabe should be an example for everyone to start speaking out. The press is also failing, they keep saying that the IG is bipartisan, but after that report that Sessions hired him to investigate Hillary, it should be obvious to them all that the IG is one of the Dotard’s puppets. His report on why McCabe was fired should not be trusted, just like Rosenstein wrote that bogus report on why Comey was fired.
