Susan Sarandon posted a #DeleteFacebook message on Facebook-owned Instagram

'Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story' Screening - Arrivals

I’m not a Millennial, so my approach to social media has been to largely ignore it in my personal life. You don’t need to see me ‘gramming my lunch, nor do you need to hear my Facebook rants on politics. Why would I rant on Facebook when I can get paid to rant about politics here at Celebitchy?! I’m on Twitter – @KaiseratCB – and I love that format, because it’s so conversational, informative, immediate and funny. In the past, I’ve thought about joining Facebook and Instagram, but my IDGAF/introverted nature always stopped me. Now I’m looking like a pioneer though, as #DeleteFacebook takes hold around the world. Facebook doesn’t have MY data, hurray. Anyway, Susan Sarandon is the latest celebrity encouraging people to delete Facebook.

Actress and activist Susan Sarandon has joined the growing list of celebrities and public figures abandoning Facebook in the wake of its privacy scandal. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Congress this week that there has been no “dramatic fall-off” of users after the Cambridge Analytica revelations. But there certainly have been prominent defections, including Cher, Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey and Rosie O’Donnell.

Sarandon tweeted her discontent today, which she attributed to censorship. She also posted to Instagram, a platform that’s owned by Facebook. She’s not alone. In Silicon Valley, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said growing concerns about the lack of privacy and security on Facebook prompted his exit. “Everything we are doing is being watched or monitored, known to other people,” Woz said this week in an interview with USA Today.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk — who deleted the Facebook pages for both companies in March, tweeting that the social network “gives me the willies” — is now calling for regulation.

This is all fine, I guess, although Facebook is still going to have assloads of metadata on every person who has ever had a Facebook account, so the “delete Facebook” campaign is more of a symbolic gesture. Also: Facebook owns Instagram, and the ‘gram is coming for all of your data too. Which makes it especially rich that Susan Sarandon posted her #DeleteFacebook message ON Instagram. Oh, well. I guess we now only have to worry about Twitter. And Google. And the NSA. And CIA. And everything else.

I’m leaving Facebook. #DeleteFacebook

    Pseudo intellectuals love quoting Bukowski.

    • Veronica S. says:

LOL seriously. I actually like some of his work, but if you read enough of his material, you’d know the man is an absolute c*nt.

  2. RBC says:

Don’t forget WhatsApp which is also owned by Facebook
Pretty sure they monitor the chats. I have discussed vacation spots I would like to visit. Then suddenly I see travel posts for those exact places on my Facebook feed
    Creepy

    • Erinn says:

It’s possible. But you’re also more likely to notice those ads even if it’s just a coincidence. If you’ve ever searched travel stuff, specific places, looked at blogs about those places… you’re just more likely to get the ads in general. And if you use chrome and have your account linked to multiple devices it doesn’t matter which one you’re using to search this stuff – still can show up easily.

  3. Cee says:

LOL at everyone coming at Facebook and not Google.

    • monette says:

Yes, I’m wayyy more concerned about google than Fb, because it has all of my God damn searches. It knows EVERYTHING.
If I think I have some disease, problems in my marriage even the kind of porn I like.

  4. Coop says:

Get off Instagram and preach then, Susan. You’re such a millennial.

  5. Elina says:

    #youreoldstoptalking

    • Carol Hill says:

Rudeness is rudeness is rudeness. Ageism is ugly.

      • happygolucky says:

it’s NOT rude! she helped elect trump.

      • minx says:

She helped elect Trump but her age has nothing to do with that.

      • magnoliarose says:

Susan Sarandon did not help elect 45.
I wish everyone would blame the fools who carried their sorry arses to the polls and voted for him. I refuse to look at my side of the street anymore. It isn’t our responsibility to save the country from itself.
Like Malcolm X said the chickens have come home to roost.

      • Jess says:

        Your comment reeks of privilege.
As for Sarandon she voted for stein. She’s not responsible but she’s complicit with her a vote for Hillary is the same as a vote for trump rethoric. In some swing states those independent voters would have made a difference and in others as high as 13% of Bernie supporters voted for trump which needless to say . Celebrities like Sarandon sure didn’t help because they helped create a false notion that trump wasn’t part of the establishment.
And please do not use black revolutionaries like Malcolm in defence of a white champagne socialist like Sarandon. Angela Davis a contemporary of Malcolm and a real revolutionary held her nose and voted for Hillary because she saw the dangers trump represented to POC civil rights. Sarandon is a rich white woman who had no understanding of how this presidency would affect minorities and stubbornly refused to listen to anyone that wasn’t sitting at the feet of Bernie.

    • joanne says:

do you understand that you are aging with every breath you take? there is no alternative that includes living. why should an old person stop talking?

    • Carrie1 says:

I have so much to say but it seems pointless. I’m over 50 tho so it’s probably just as well.

    • Natalia says:

      @Alina:
Shut up little girl. I’d rather be old than a smug little know-it-all who lacks maturity and insight into the real probelem. (See Jess’s comment.)
      @Jess:
      Preach!

  6. Jussie says:

That’s the line almost everyone is taking, it’s not just Sarandon being dumb or hypocritical.

At the moment Instagram (and WhatsApp) are viewed as ok by most people. Facebook’s influence so far has been reasonably minimal. That will definitely change soon (though not as soon as it would have without this controversy), but for now most #DeleteFacebooker’s are taking a wait and see approach to Facebook’s various acquisitions.

  7. Lorelei says:

She is such a moron. I have not been able to stand the sight of her since all of her Bernie BS and I wish she’d just go away already.

  8. Rapunzel says:

Go vote for Jill Stein, b-tch.

  9. minx says:

    Go away.

  10. BitingPanda says:

    #DeleteSusanSarandon

    Still cancelled.

  11. ValiantlyVarnished says:

It’s so weird to look back to when I was a teen studying acting. I was a HUGE Susan Sarandon fan. One thing both politics and social media has done is reveal the hypocritical *ssholes for who they are. And she falls directly under that category. I have come to truly detest and loathe this woman.

  12. Littlestar says:

I started using Instagram in 2013, before Facebook bought it; it has been my favorite app. But Facebook has been ruining it; they changed the chronological order, put in the adds in your feed, ads in the story, suggested people in your feed, basically link it to your FB without your consent. Ruined 🙁

    • Nancy says:

I wasn’t going to comment, but she is right. Facebook has become big brother. People may laugh and say those condemning it are crazy, but wait and see. The phrase Big Brother is watching is no longer a futuristic situation. Listening, as well.

  13. Ann says:

I’m not deleting Facebook. I got it so my husband could watch what his grandchildren are up to. I rarely post. I share sometimes about only one issue. I’ve checked who is following me and blocked them all. I’ve never understood the need to put oneself out there on Facebook, Instagram whatever.
I’m surprised people are surprised it has come to this.

  14. caitlin says:

Thanks for including your thoughts and opinion on Facebook, Kaiser! As someone who has never used Facebook and has had no inclination to do so – what a waste of time “liking” and opining on people’s posts, not to mention the privacy issues – it’s validating to see someone else who hasn’t bought into the social media “herd” mentality. One caveat tho, I do agree with your remarks on Twitter – although I don’t have an account, or “tweet” , I do check out certain accounts periodically and find it useful and sometimes entertaining.

  15. Girl_ninja says:

Delete Susan Sarandon. She’s such a phony.

  16. Electric Tuba says:

    Hahaha she’s so stupid sometimes.
I’d laugh if Instagram deletes her account for her lol. Anyway I’ve been purposely googling strange things for years to disrupt system algorithms and to test what channels have been monitored. For example, any chat lines, messenger apps, and discussions in emails to see what kind of ads and spam are consequently displayed after a search. The results were as you’d expect. Frightening
Also if you used FB to advertise your company/product the extremely detailed choices they give to to narrow down your target audience would have been a tip off of the type of monitoring/gathering they did.

  17. M.A.F. says:

Eh. I don’t see Facebook going anywhere. This isn’t the great die off like MySpace (RIP). Not everyone wants to be on Twitter (nope), SnapChat (nope), etc. They’ll do a better job but I’m pretty sure just about every social media platform collects data, each to a certain degree.

  18. phatypopo says:

She’s a f****** idiot. Am I allowed to say that here?

  19. Lucy2 says:

Ugh Susan. No one wants to hear from her right now. Not when she’s been busy playing the privileged jerk about the election for the last year or so.
I use Facebook. I’m very careful about my privacy settings and what I put on there, but there’s always a risk.

  20. Lana 234 says:

What facebook did was wrong but deleting it is not going to do anything. The damage is done. Susan Sarandon needs to stop talking and quoting intellectuals to appear to be cultured.

  21. Raina says:

I’m not deleting fb, I’m loud and proud and I really dgaf what people know about me anymore. Not even a little. Have at it.
