The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge have welcomed a baby boy this morning

Catherine Duchess of Cambridge visits Pegasus Primary School in Oxford

I know this isn’t the point, but can I just say? My gossip-predicting mojo has been on FIRE this year. I had a wonky mojo predicting year in 2017, but everything is really calibrated in 2018. It suddenly came to me last week: the Duchess of Cambridge was expecting a boy. And look what happened! Kate gave birth to her second son and third child at about 11 am London-time. The baby is healthy and so is Kate. William was there for the birth. Here’s the announcement from Kensington Palace:

My guess is that since things moved so quickly – like they did with Charlotte’s birth – that we will be seeing William, Kate and the baby later today. Kate’s stylist Natasha Archer has already been seen at the hospital, so I’m sure she dropped off Kate’s postpartum-photo look. It’s also my guess that we won’t hear the name until tomorrow or Wednesday. Congrats to Will and Kate!!

  1. Kitty says:

Congrats to her. Hope you recovers well. Also seems like not a big news she gave birth like with the first born.

  2. Nicole says:

So exciting. Princess Charlotte will rule them all.
Glad they had a healthy baby.

    • imqrious2 says:

You KNOW she will 😊. Glad Kate had a seemingly easy birth, and delivered a healthy baby. I called “boy” months ago. (yay me lol). Twitter was showing William leaving to get George and Charlotte.

Sad there won’t be a little Alice Victoria, but I’m hoping for an Arthur Thomas Michael Francis (there are enough grands that have Philip’s name!)

    • whatever says:

I agree Charlotte is going to be the boss! They just showed George and Charlotte arriving at the Lindo Wing on the news and she was MUCH more confident than George.

  3. klutzy_girl says:

I’m a little sad it wasn’t a girl, and thus, we aren’t getting an Alice or Victoria, but please name him Arthur! It’s my favorite choice.

    • tracking says:

      would love this!

    • Goats on the Roof says:

Arthur is at the top of mine and husband’s list, and I would hate to see them choose it for selfish reasons.

    • MrsBump says:

I was hoping for a little princess Alice too! Ahh well..
I feel sorry for little Charlotte for the sort of media scrunity she will grow up under as the King’s only daughter, having a little sister might have helped there.

    • Mumzy says:

But now we can have Wakanda Windsor, King of Keen

    • Morning Coffee says:

I think they may name him Phillip.

    • Snappyfish says:

That’s so funny as I am thinking Arthur Phillip Charles and maybe Michael thrown in for her dad

    • Sequinedheart says:

Me too, that was the first thing I thought. But then I realized, this kid is the next gen harry….! So much more fun.

    • ann says:

But not, perhaps, a particularly auspicious Royal name (I’m thinking of Henry VIII’s brother, the deceased prince of wales). But hey, Harry is getting married on the anniversary of the beheading of Anne Boleyn, so maybe they DGAF. JMO.

  4. Cee says:

For some reason I am delighted that this is perhaps the first time in this family that a blood princess will not be demoted down the line with the birth of a younger brother. Not that it matters so much with a third child, but still!

It’s incredible how fast her last two deliveries have been, she is very lucky.

    Congratulations to the family.

    • Lexter says:

Charlotte has made history so I am delighted!

      • notasugarhere says:

CC didn’t make history. The people who passed the legislation did.

      • Carolind says:

Yes, but Charlotte is the “face” of the history. Congrats to them. Kate seems to do well at giving birth.

      • Lexter says:

She is the first one to actually be affected so of course she made history. Chill.
Also the legislators cant pat themselves on the back that it took them this long to change tue archaic law so poo to you

      • Lana says:

It’s obvious that people here know that, we don’t need you to correct people who were just making a comment. No one said C deserves credit.
No one was being literal. People call people the face of things because they were the first. Their are plenty of people who’ve done nothing but be the first. That’s not discrediting anyone.

      • notasugarhere says:

As she states right there, “Charlotte has made history” so she’s clearly giving a child credit. You are welcome to keep celebrating her for doing nothing but being born, that is the way of royals.

      • Lana says:

Yeah, I’m sure you know what Op meant by “face”
No one said a toddler did all the work and this and that. Someone gave a opinion on what the face was to her because she was the first.

She’s not to you and that’s fine but obviously no one here is saying Charlotte is taking credit for others peoples work.

And those people “acted” so this could be a first. I’m sure they don’t think someone on the internet saying this opinion is a slap in the face.

      • Goats on the Roof says:

        Nota

I usually love your insights and agree with much of what you say, but I have to agree that you are being overly critical and nitpicky here. Like it or not, Princesa Charlotte is the face of an historic moment, not those who passed the legislation. She will be who people see when they google succession laws.

      • notasugarhere says:

And you’re welcome to think that. I’d rather celebrate the fact that the laws were finally changed, instead of celebrating the person who benefits from the change in the law via accident of birth. Ultimately she will be a footnote in history. Royals exist in their positions merely due to accident of birth so it doesn’t surprise me.

    • Carolind says:

Sour grapes. An awful lot of everyone’s lives are defined by “accident of birth” – colour, race, religion, rich parents et etc etc.

  5. Milla says:

Congrats, wishing little boy love, health and happiness.

  6. happy girl says:

    So happy…

  7. L84Tea says:

Wonderful news for this rainy Monday morning. Congrats to them!

  8. Jess says:

I can’t get over how quickly she gives birth and bounces back, it’s not normal lol. Can’t wait to hear the name, and see how amazing she looks this afternoon!

    • Jag says:

It is totally normal for some women. lol

      Congratulations to them!

      • Jess says:

True, I just wish I was one of them! My sister was up bopping around the room 10 minutes after my nephew was born, she was high on endorphins I think. All I wanted to do was sleep for a day! 😂

    • LAK says:

I wonder if they don’t wait until the very last minute before transferring to the hospital so that it appears she gives birth superfast. Transfer to the hospital would barely cause a ripple in her general discomfort as KP is a skip and a hope away, barely 10mins by car especially when traffic is cleared to let through her motorcade.

      • Goats on the Roof says:

I always assumed she did the bulk of her laboring at home, then transferred to hospital for the actual birth.

      • Shotcaller says:

I don’t think they care about her appearing to deliver quickly. With George there was a leak from a car park attendant that she had arrived at St. Mary’s and that may have been upsetting. My mom, sister and bf all waited until the last possible minute before they headed to the hospital.

      • violet says:

@LAK, I waited till not quite the last minute, but pretty close; until contractions are a certain amount of time apart, they discourage you from going in the moment you feel them coming on unless you have a long way to go. In a place like London, I imagine no one is more than 15 minutes from the local hospital – as you say, it’s the traffic you have to worry about, but I’m sure these two don’t have to worry about that. Home is usually more comfortable. I couldn’t wait to go home the second time, although I was nervous going home the first time.

      • Millenial says:

That was my assumption as well. With my first I did 30 hours at home and 3 hours at the hospital. Wouldn’t change a thing.

      • Mumzy says:

See Seth Meyers and wife about timing the hospital trip!

      • LAK says:

To be clear, i’m not suggesting that they want to pretend or appear that she’s a fast birther.

I am wondering if she seems to be a fast birther to *us* because they wait until the very last minute when most of the initial labour work is done at home before transfer to the hospital such that she’s already at the latter stage and baby comes afew hours after admission.

Violet: Speaking of hospitals, i volunteered to be my Texas based sister’s birth companion and quickly regretted it when she told me her *nearest* hospital was 2hrs away. Lucky for me, she went into labour whilst visiting her doctor whose clinic was at the hospital. 😁😊

      • Citresse says:

LAK yes pretty sure Kate is moved to hospital once she transitions. I wanted to go back home once staff told me it would be a long time but my water had broken and I was running a fever. Same thing happened to Diana birthing William, she was running a fever. Kate has easy deliveries, lucky her. Congrats to the Cambridges!!!

      • Peeking in says:

LAK- I’ve been meaning to ask you about the line of succession. If something happens to William (please Deity, don’t let it) whilst Charles is still king, who’s next in line? Is it George or Harry? Or if TQ outlives Charles, who’s next? I don’t mean to be morbid, just something I’ve wondered.

      • Cynical Ann says:

That’s really difficult to predict though-even if you’ve given birth before. She appears to have fairly quick births-you don’t want to do much laboring at home before getting to the hospital-just in case. Especially if your water has broken.

      • Ladykeller says:

Usually once you’ve had one or 2 it gets a lot easier and quicker. My second was definitely easier and I was begging to leave the hospital a few hours after he was born.

      • LAK says:

Cynical Ann: Don’t forget the helicopter care she receives as a member of the royal family. Any tiny change is treated as DEFCON1, so even if they were uncertain about timing, they would take the most conservative decision to transfer her.

Peeking in: If Charles outlives William, George will be next. If that happens before he is of age, a Regent will be appointed until he is of age.

If HM outlives Charles, William would be next, followed by George

Right now there are 5 people between Harry and the throne. Their removal, by whatever means not necessarily death, is the only way he gets the throne.

      • Seraphina says:

Agreed. That makes sense because I’ve always wondered about her super fast birthing. That way minimal chaos is expirienced by all. Congrats to the family!

      • aaa says:

My recollection is that Kate’s labor with George was lengthy, there were even memes about it.

Kate’s labor with Charlotte was not lengthy but Charlotte was overdue, or at least was born later than anticipated.

      • Peeking in says:

LAK, thank you. I always thought that with the Heir and a spare, it meant if something happened to the Heir before he ascended, then it’s the spare’s turn.

      • aaa says:

        @Peeking in,
You are correct but the spare is no longer the spare when the heir apparent has a child.

      • Carolind says:

Diana was not in labour when she went into hospital to have William. She went in for a planned induction as she could not stand the pressure of waiting any longer.

    • Merritt says:

My mother was never in labor for more than 4 hours. So it is completely normal.

      • Nic919 says:

Same with my mother. My dad was warned by a nurse that if they had a third one he may have to deliver at home. They stopped at two.

      • Onerous says:

I had the same – My first in 3 hours and my second in 1.5. Our third was adopted – for many reasons, but included was my fear of not getting to the hospital in time.

  9. Lucyhoneychurch says:

Aww congrats on their new son.

Does anyone else think this means they’ll go for #4 in a few years to try for another girl? I get the sense that from things she and other people have said that Kate is trying to recreate her family growing up which had two girls. She seems super close with her own sister…

    • dodgy says:

Lord, I hope not. It’s a disgrace how they can claim benefits for their kids, whereas for us plebs, if we wish to get maintenance for a third kid, it has to be a product of rape. So, nah.

      • Yeahright says:

        Wait what?

      • minx says:

        Huh?

      • Bettyrose says:

Wait, what? Can you translste that for a non Brit? What is maintenance??

      • notasugarhere says:

From The Guardian 7 April 2017

“From Thursday (April 6) child tax credits and universal credit across the UK will be restricted to the first two children in a family. This measure will affect all households with two or more children that have an additional child after this date.

Analysis by consultancy Policy in Practice reveals a low-income family whose third or additional child is born before midnight on Wednesday would qualify for up to £50,000 in tax credit support over 18 years whereas a similar family whose third child is born on Thursday will miss out.

The government says it wants to save money and make the tax credit system fairer. It intends the two-child restriction to influence the behaviour of less well-off families by making them think twice about having a third child. But it also accepts there is no evidence to suggest this will happen. Critics say that at current birth rates, 100,000 third or subsequent children will not qualify for tax credit support over the next 12 months, inflating child poverty figures by 10% by 2020. ”

Royals, who are completely on the dole, keep sucking 600 million out of the taxpayers annually while having however many children they want/can.

      • Beluga says:

dodgy is referring to child benefit, which used to paid to all parents for each child. The government recently changed the rules so that it’s paid out for a maximum of 2 children, unless you can prove that the subsequent child was conceived via rape. (Correct me if I’m wrong – I haven’t been following that particular government legislation closely what with all of the other terrible ones going through)

      • ann says:

What the actual fuck. This is pretty outrageous – unless UK benefits are lavish (and I doubt they are), removing them after a government-established maximum number of children is not only morally wrong, it’s stupid. Of course it will lead to a more extreme cycle of poverty (ESPECIALLY child poverty) – how could it not? And that’s ignoring the stinky subtext here: that people are deliberately having more children to get more welfare. I guess the class system really is still alive and well in the UK.

      • ichsi says:

Yep, and here people are celebrating the birth of another VERY expensive mouth the taxpayers have to feed. The hypocrisy is endless.

      • BorderMollie says:

For real? God, May is just awful. Dickens villain level.

      • Spicecake38 says:

Have as many as they wish ,I think she’ll have more, but the hypocrisy of that law is disturbing

    • Zazz says:

I have a great aunt. She desperately wanted to have a daughter and had to wait for the …twelveth child to finally have a daughter after eleven sons.

I don’t envy my aunt nor her daughter with 11 super protective brothers.

      • LAK says:

My childhood BFF was from a similar family. She was the last born of 9 children. Her mother was desperate for a girl and kept having children (boys) until she got her girl (my friend) at which point she had her tubes tied!!!

    • Lela says:

I think they will have a 4th as well!

  10. aerohead21 says:

I have 3 boys and 1 girl so while I initially wanted more girls, I have to say it’s pretty awesome having only 1. She does rule the roost and my boys are rowdy fun. It’ll be good. Congrats!

  11. Becks says:

Congratulations to them! Very exciting (as these things go – in terms of celebrity gossip lol.)

I am jealous of her labors and births. I was in labor for 36 hours with my first and had a C-section at the end of it. I hear about her quick labors and I am jealous! haha

  12. Sayrah says:

Congrats! I was sure it was a girl.

  13. minx says:

    Very sweet news.

  14. Snap Happy says:

This actually made me say, “Aw!” I can’t wait to see him.

Side note – really like the stylist’s outfit.

  15. Maria says:

Very good Kaiser! Your prediction was right on. We’ll find out tomorrow if they name him Thomas.
Congrats to the Cambridges, glad all went well, and I wish them all the joys a new baby will bring. A big baby. 8lbs 7ounces. Bigger than the others I believe.

    • Citresse says:

I was surprised I guessed the weight correctly or at least I’m pretty sure… I’ll have to go back and check but anyway yeah Kate gives birth to big babies it always amazes me because as we all know Kate isn’t a large person she’s very fine in build, small wrists etc…and she gets thin post birth as we’ve seen.

      • LAK says:

Actually, everything you’ve just described about Kate’s pregnancies is a classic marker for a big framed person as opposed to being fine / small boned, small wrists.

People with big frames are able to carry weight and gain a big chunk of weight before it shows visibly. They tend to look really good with the added weight. All things we see with Kate. Visually her wrists are not small. And she never looks comparatively good when she loses the weight. Another marker of big framed people.

      • Spicecake38 says:

Yep LAK I’m slim but larger boned, and weight loss causes me to look gaunt because bones begin to protrude, and weight gain doesn’t show up until I’m about 15-20 pounds over my best weight-weird I know

  16. violet says:

Well, too bad “George” is taken, it being St. George’s Day! Tbh, I was hoping for a girl because of the clothes, but health of mother and baby is of course everything. I think it was good they had a third, so Charlotte’s identity won’t have the shadow of “the spare” hanging over it. Another child will dilute that, I think. Big baby, too!

My guess is on Philip, with the other two grandfather’s names worked in and maybe father’s if they go for the four name that they didn’t with the other two, so everyone gets covered.

  17. JustJen says:

YAY!!!! Today is my daughter’s birthday too. I’m hoping against Arthur just because I loathe the nickname, Art. Blech.

    • notasugarhere says:

Arthur seems very old fashioned even for these two and their cosplay kid outfits. I’d be surprised by Michael, because of Prince Michael and Mike Tindall. Frances/Francis would be a middle name option that brings in Diana and Michael Middleton. Sophie and Edward already have a James. Out on a limb guess would be including Ian.

  18. Veronica T says:

Very happy they had a healthy baby and healthy mom!
Princess Ann is only sister among boys and seems to have flourished! May Charlotte flourish as well!

  19. HeidiM says:

    Arthur Phillip………..this is my guess!

  20. Maya says:

    Gabriel is my guess

  21. Anastasia says:

Whew, that’s a BIG baby for someone so petite. Almost as big as mine!

  22. Tvtg says:

When they have kids I just think about the taxpayers and how unfair that is tonthem

  23. Sherry says:

Aww! Congratulations on a healthy baby boy! I’m also hoping for Arthur! I’m probably in the minority, but I would like to see them have one more, possibly a Princess Alice or Victoria.

  24. HK9 says:

Congrats!! I’m glad mom & baby are doing well.

  25. MellyMel says:

Congrats to them! I was right in thinking they were having a boy. I’m still hoping they go with Arthur or Michael.

  26. whatever says:

I think the names will be Authur Michael Philip or James Philip Michael.

  27. lobbit says:

    Aww, congrats!

  28. Pixie says:

    Name him Walter ! 🙂

  29. Citresse says:

I’m kind of glad it’s a boy….think of the future situation if Kate had another girl….The eldest and male heir to the throne ie-George, may get a real inflated ego as he ages…known as the golden (only) boy in the family, he can do no wrong, his younger sisters can’t stop him from abusing his power as a future Monarch and being an all-round adult (insufferable) brat all his life………yes having another boy balances it nicely… and if Kate has a fourth, another girl would be perfect!!!!!

    • Kitty says:

You really think they would have a fourth?

      • Citresse says:

No, I don’t think W&K will have a fourth but then I thought W&K wouldn’t have a third child after Charlotte turned 2 years old, so who knows?….maybe they will have a fourth?

  30. MousieBrown says:

Diana chose William and Harry’s names because Charles wanted Arthur or Albert and she didn’t like those.

I love Thomas but Camilla has a son Thomas so not sure they’d go there.

    • Violet says:

@MousieBrown – The other reason I’m betting on Philip is because it’s also a nod to Kate’s family: If I’m not mistaken, “Pippa” is a nickname for Phillipa. So if they use Philip they will please the Queen, I think, and also finally work Kate’s family in simultaneously. Especially as, IMHO, at 36, this is probably the last time she wants to go through this.

  31. Case says:

So happy for them. I love this sweet little family. I quite like Arthur or Albert. “Albie” would be a cute nickname.

  32. HeyThere! says:

Congratulations to them! A sweet baby boy! I will hesitate to call her birth ‘easy’ because I’m not there and don’t have the details. In my humble experiences pushing tiny humans from my vag, nothing about it is easy. LOL I will say she seems to feel well after and good for her. I always rip(OUCH-it’s the worst), and I am all stitched up and in boatloads of pain. I have a hard time sitting for a month after child birth. I have a donut I carry everywhere, even in the car, or I can’t sit down. I was sad after I gave birth the first time because I felt like I walked in blind to pp care. I had zero idea how miserable I would be feeling on top not sleeping and caring for my tiny humans. I didn’t realize going to the bathroom for a quick pee would be a 15 minute ordeal. I felt like everyone lied to me, LOL, but I know every one if different and maybe the people I was getting advice from didn’t rip at the last second while birthing? I try to be very ‘real’ when friends ask me my experience.

There is no way I could have walked out of a hospital a few hours later actually looking happy. Ha! Hats off to her for doing it.

I can’t wait to hear what the name is! That’s always my favorite part!

    • Ummm says:

Im with you lol. After my first two just sitting down was a chore. (OMG after the first kid I had a cough…I thought I would die lol.) But after my third I had no stitches and the difference was amazing! At my hospital they’d started trying to stretch instead of cutting…and with it being my third it actually helped (I’m assuming that helped make a difference anyway…) He was actually my biggest and most difficult birth. Kid had his head cocked to the side and it took foooreeever to get him to move and come out already lol.

  33. Lucky Charm says:

Congratulations to them! I certainly called that wrong, I was sure it was a girl. But then I never get these things right, lol.

Speaking of girls, yesterday my son and daughter-in-law had a baby girl, and my daughter told us she’s expecting in the fall.

  34. Franny Days says:

Totally random but as a new mom I find myself wondering if she breastfeeds her babies. It’s so hard and something you can’t get a nanny to do for you so I’m curious.

    • Aang says:

I always feel bad when new moms have a hard time breastfeeding. I found it easier than a bottle just because it made taking the baby out so much easier. No keeping milk cold, or sterilizing bottles. And at night I could just latch the baby on to eat, unlatch when done and go back to sleep. No need to get out of bed. I did sometimes feel like I never had second to myself and it would be nice if someone else could feed the baby. But in all I think it was much more convenient. I was also young and it felt very empowering to me to see my baby grow on my milk. I don’t judge women who choose bottles though, every situation is different. And I wasn’t working outside the house at the time and that made a big difference in my choice.

    • Millenial says:

I speculate that she does not. I’m basing that guess on how her breasts go back to normal size within a month or two after delivery. Who knows though.

Not shaming her. She can do whatever she wants for whatever reason she wants.

      • Franny Days says:

Yea absolutely no shame in whatever she decides. I might be making the switch to formula if I continue being this miserable!

      • Millenial says:

I switched at 5-6 months and it was overall a good decision for us. I didn’t have to pump at work anymore (huzzah!) and baby started sleeping better and BONUS not in our bedroom anymore.

    • imqrious2 says:

I read that she did breastfeed for 3 mos. It was in some article after George was born; I think the one where she said something about William not being around much for the first 6 mos..

  35. Berry says:

It will be interesting to see if William interacts more with Charlotte in public. He has always seemed very attentive to George, but not as much with Charlotte. She needs her father’s time and attention too.

  36. notasugarhere says:

Tatiana Santo Domingo and Andrea Casiraghi also had their third, a son named Max Rainier. Date of birth hasn’t been given but was a couple of days ago.

    • Maria says:

Saw that Nota. I think he was born Saturday, also in London. I’ve always found this couple semi-interesting, not very conventional, anyway. And they seem to lead a more or less private life. So that’s one down for Monaco, Beatrice is expecting her second next month I believe and Charlotte is rumoured to be pregnant also with her fiancé Dmitri. Don’t know if she will get married first, this is Monaco after all.

    • Spicecake38 says:

I’ll be googling this story tonight-Like them, they seem legit and kind of cool. Thanks for the info I’d have never known

  37. homeslice says:

Oh my CNN just showed footage of William walking George and Charlotte into the hospital, and little Charlotte was waving the entire time. She is adorable!

    • whatever says:

      She’s such a cutie-pie.

    • koko says:

Her little peak back before entering, and waving was adorable. I think George was told by dad to wave and he wasn’t having any of that. Both of them are sweet.

  38. AlliK says:

I really hope it’s not Arthur Philip – for selfish reasons. I’m scheduled to deliver twins on Friday and Arthur Philip is the name we picked out for one of them. Arthur is a family name on my husband’s side, plus I think it’s really cute and in the style of old fashioned names trending upward. And Philip is my dad’s name. So fingers crossed they’ll use a different names. After years of infertility, it’s great to sit here while on hospital bedrest and really be able to feel happy and not jealous of fertile myrtle Kate. Good for them.

Ohh! I had Charlotte Elizabeth picked out since 2011 when I was pregnant with my first and then had two boys, by the time we had a girl, I felt I couldn’t use the name so I feel for you.

I wonder why they only list the attending doctors but not the nurses?

    • Ummm says:

The doctors always get the credit. After having three kids I can say the nurse definitely did most of the work lol. The doctor basically catches the baby after the nurse gets it to the end zone 😉
