Ellen Pompeo on Grey’s: ‘There is an end and it’s nearing’

We just celebrated Ellen Pompeo’s lucrative deal with Grey’s Anatomy, and now she’s talking about ending the show! Grey’s has been on the air for 14 seasons – what? Not to sound too much like and old fuddy-duddy, but I can still remember watching the very first episode like it was just… okay, yeah, it’s been a while. Nothing has been set – yet. Except if the series titular character says the end is nigh, we should probably prepare ourselves.

An end is near for the employees at Grey-Sloan Memorial. While Shonda Rhimes has stated repeatedly that she’d continue working on Grey’s Anatomy as long as Ellen Pompeo wanted, the lead actress revealed to Us Weekly that she sees that day coming soon.

“We’re getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together,” she told Us exclusively on Tuesday, May 1. “I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship. You gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people’s flaws, and accept your own flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better.”

The mother of three, who is currently partnering with Young Living Essential Oils to launch its new Seedlings line of baby care products, also admitted that “there is an end and it’s nearing” when it comes to the ABC drama, which is currently in its 14th season. “I want to be more involved in my kids’ lives as they get older. And they need me more, and this world is such a crazy place,” Pompeo, 48, told Us. She noted that she also has an idea of how the show will end … but isn’t sharing that just yet!

So, full disclosure, I can’t really remember the last season I watched Grey’s Anatomy, but it’s been years. Is there still a story there? This article makes it sound like the decision to end the show is based on Ellen wanting to focus more on being home and behind the camera work and not that the story has played out.

The interview touches briefly on Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew leaving the show. A few outlets tried to frame it as a scandal but I didn’t see it. However, the way Ellen address it in this interview was… odd?

I think [showrunner] Krista [Vernoff]‘s done an incredible job. The cast changes, I can’t imagine, was an easy decision for her to make. And certainly wasn’t easy for the girls. But, I had to just try to support everybody, be as supportive as I can [be] and think about other people before myself, think about the girls. Listen, everybody we lose on the show, every time we lose someone, it’s devastating.”

We are a family and it’s super awkward. It’s not like films where you work for three months, and you’re not going to see the people, or you’ll see them at the junket and that’s it. You know, we really are together, through births, through deaths. Every day, sickness and health … [It’s] an odd family, that we’re thrown together with. So, when these things happen, there’s a lot of tumult. Inside, there’s chaos and feelings – sadness and anger, and it’s a lot to deal with.”

That sounds like it was a little bit more involved, doesn’t it? Plus, this confirms that the show axed them. Now I’m curious as hell what’s going on.

So how will the show end? Probably the hospital being sucked into a cyclone while Meredith is performing surgery. I wonder how many former cast will come back to say goodbye? This always happens, I lose interest in a show only to become fully invested when they announce their last season.

They were definitely fired. I think Sarah Drew found out through twitter O_o which is super odd knowing how Shonda lets go of people in person.

Just want to say as the second person commenting, I remember watching the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy. It was in summer, 2005, near the Christmas holidays. (I was in graduate school in Australia.) I had no idea what I was watching because I didn’t watch that much telly. Had no idea the series was about to become a cultural phenomenon.

The main issues in regards to Capshaw and Drew were why they were let go and how. ABC basically “hinted” that the reasons they were let go were due to budget issues and that they could no long afford to keep them on. Ellen had just re-upped with a multi million dollar contract with ABC so people connected the dots that essentially ABC fired them to cover the costs of how much they are paying Ellen to stay on the show. Also – both Sarah and Jessica stated that they found out through social media that they were let go before they had been officially fired by ABC. Shady AF. And Ellen’s response on Twitter was shady as well and basically confirmed that the reason they were let go was money. I like Ellen but the way she handled that entire thing was messy and I lost a lot of respect for her. She should have just stayed quiet because her lame response on Twitter only made it worse.

Agreed but I will go a step further. I loved Grey’s Anatomy. Watched it from the beginning up until they killed McDreamy. After that I was done. Ellen showed how she IS motivated by money back then to the detriment of the show. I say that because for years, Ellen and Patrick Dempsey said that if one goes, so does the other to maintain the story of their characters. BUT then Patrick was ready to leave and Ellen wasn’t. She wanted more money and stayed on the show. The result has been years of recycled storylines and a show that has overstayed its welcome. I think it was great that Ellen negotiated a great deal for herself but there’s no way to not see the consequence of that deal being the firing of her two co-workers. She should own up to that.

I quit after Patrick Dempsey was killed off- it’s not that I couldn’t handle watching without him,but storylines started running off the rails crazy.Eveybody had slept together by now, fought, become friends, become enemies, switched specialties, and they have given them every catastrophe to deal with-I’m thinking for the show to have a climactic enough ending they’ll have to go with Meredith Grey saving people after a meteorite hits the earth,or maybe alien robots will be involved 🤖☄️🚑

I will always binge-watch this show and am glad it ran this long. It has a special significance for people battling with depression and anxiety. It has helped me through some dark times.
P.S. I really need to look like this when I’m 48!

I’ve been watching this season and the past few years. I think Lisa Drew is excellent but for some reason was a polarizing figure with fans of the show. I could never figure it out. I think she’s an excellent actress and liked her pairing with Jesse Williams, but many simply hated them together. (So now Sondra has paired him with a black actress on the show and all the fans hate that, too. They just are cranky fans, I think.) But I have to say that Sondra has been giving Lisa Drew some incredible material for her swan song. There was a recent show where she had a brilliant scene with a rabbi on his deathbed. I hope they submit that to the Emmy folks. She was wonderful in it. Jessica Capshaw? I don’t know. She always struck me as a very unbelievable character all together.

    • Miss M says:

I really like Lisa Drew in GA too. When her character started her down spiral, I thought it was preparing the audience for her exit. To me, the alcoholic/storyline was really to make the audience dislike her. But she is such a great actress. It made me have more empathy for her charcater and the pain she was going through…

    • Claudia says:

      Who’s Lisa Drew? Sarah Drew!

      • Miss M says:

Thank you for the correction! 😀
I was replying and made the same mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️

    G.A is my guilty pleasure.
I hope Sandrah Oh keeps her word and come back for the last episode.
I am a die hard Christina Yang fan. And Dr. Webber.

  7. Renee says:

    @ Jessica, Wow! What a compassionate person…….

  8. Lindsey says:

Still watch it and still love it. I like how they hit on important topics of the day (shootings of unarmed black children, #metoo, transgender topics) and how they show all kinds of relationships. The story lines are good and less far fetched than they were several years back.

  9. meh says:

I am loling at the fact that she’s “partnering” with a freaking MLM. That’s a good way to lose your fortune.

  10. SM says:

The way she talks about the relationships on set, it kindda fives out a feeling they do not get along. I respect Ellen for staying this long on this path and not jumping off burnning bridges like Katherine Heigl as soon as the show took off. The patience and loyalty did pay off she is a bigger name than any of the rest of the cast who thought that by being on this show they proved to be movie stars. But do these tv show people not realize also that working day after day, year after year along the same people everyday, searching for the ways to make it work together IS how majority of us work. They try to make it sound like it is so out of ordinary, trying to compromise and work as a team when it really is a reality for most of us.

  11. Turtle says:

I stopped watching YEARS ago. I think after TR Knight left and his character was killed off. It bummed me out that a character I’d been watching for years was bumped off like that. But I get it. I stuck with “ER” to the bitter end, and by that point they’d dropped a helicopter on a villain and had a tank (!) shoot up the hospital and characters’ personalities were changing from one week to the next. It ended a long, long time after it should have, despite random lovely moments.

  12. No Doubtful says:

I haven’t watched the past 4 episodes because I hate the direction the show has gone in. Firing two popular actresses, pairing up a couple (Maggie and Jackson) that NOBODY likes, and having a cast full of boring, uninspiring characters. They really need to weed out the useless interns and played out characters (Owen) in order to bring in some fresh faces and storylines. Besides all of that…I will never get over killing off Derek…Meredith and him WERE the heart of the show!! It should have ended then. I have kept watching only because I’ve devoted so much time to it that I have to see it through! Does anyone else do that? LOL

  13. First timer says:

I have read this blog for years but this is my first comment. I have watched Grey’s since the start. If “no one” was watching it, it wouldn’t still be on the air. I think people like to act like they are all over things that might not seem cool anymore. This needs to stop. This is why shows get cancelled so soon. Why are people so afraid of not watching/talking about the latest thing? I watch Grey’s Anatomy and I’m proud!!!

    • Meryl says:

“This is why shows get cancelled too soon” oh hush. Greys is in its 40millionth season. People want to talk about the latest thing because it’s usually fresh and innovative. You can’t tell me that having every disaster imaginable happen time and again on Grey’s makes for compelling arcs that are new or groundbreaking. It’s a show that’s past it’s expiration date.

  14. Marianne Hord says:

I stopped watching years ago too. It just got too soap-y.
